28:18 Minutes00:00 to 1:47        IntroComing to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk. You'll recognize yourself in these true-life stories of adversity, challenge, fear, discovery, adventure, expression, and more from women who are walking their lives while their lives walk them and the lasting difference their journeys have made. I'm your host, Diane Wyzga.  Welcome back to Part 2 of the podcast interview with my guest, Catherine Johns, professional speaker, communication coach, and author of Show Up and Shine. I asked Catherine what will be the same and different about business following COVID as we continue to meet up virtually and again in-person. Let's hear what Catherine has to say about what will be key as we navigate next as well as simple steps to boost your confidence and charisma when you communicate in business.1:47 to 7:00        Pivot and What Will Remain in Business Post-COVIDQuestion: When you made a change from radio to professional speaker and coach you were on a trajectory that would eventually intersect with COVID. We've all been experiencing virtual training, virtual workshops, and more. What will remain the same as we go forward in business with a new hybrid of some online/virtual & some in-person?Many people have discovered a preference for virtual workMeetings work reasonably well over virtual platformsMay organizations and such had better attendance onlineLots of gains in terms of efficiency to be onlineCost: the energy we feel from a person may not come across on a virtual platformVoice becomes even more important onlineCatherine realizes she was doing virtual work before we had a name for itIf anybody can talk into the ether, it's Catherine!Catherine did not hide from virtual work but embraced itSpent much of last half 2020 coaching and supporting othersConsiders herself lucky to contract with corporate client for a national virtual conferenceFinancially 2020 was best year for her business!Others experience this too: the pivot turned out to be profitableQuestion: What would you like to do more of and finding out what worked well?More speakingCatherine loves speaking in groupsProfessional calendar is fillingVirtual work will continue but did have an in-person engagementCatherine - like the rest of us - already venturing into in-person speaking and it's welcomed!7:00 to 12:15       The Book: Show Up and ShineQuestion: There's a place where Catherine has compiled so many of her tips and experiences, in her book “Show Up and Shine: Simple Steps to Boost Your Confidence and Charisma.”  Not only was her gift of a copy a generous gesture from a generous woman but now with my own copy in hand I could underline and write marginal notes to my heart's content. You wrote this book for and about how professional women communicate in business: how they speak, how they present themselves. Would you tell us what drew you to write this book; what was the need  that you saw?Catherine has a message she hopes will be supportive: write a book!Almost everybody has a book in them and many won't release itThe idea of writing a book felt daunting; but she understood that she needed a book to demonstrate her expertiseCatherine went home and wrote the book in a few weeks and self-published itTaking your own book directly to market is a giftWhat people say about Catherine's book, “I could hear you  talking to me.”Catherine's book is short, sweet, less than 100 pages, full of stories, practical action steps, and the benefits you'll receiveWrite a book people will read; people pick up books in airports because they read on the flight100 pages is golden12:15 to 17:15       Overlooked and Under-Heard No MoreQuestion: Professional woman often feel “overlooked & under-heard;” would you tell us what you mean about that and how to turn it around.Women complain that they don't get credit for their ideas, no one listens to them, they are not acknowledgedThis is a common experience in corporate and organizational lifeSome people still accord more power to men than womenIt's also our fault if we slouch, perch in a chair, twirl our hair, talk in a tiny voice, looking at the table, hesitating, smiling a lot, perching in a chair, and so onWhen a woman shows up looking like she belongs in 7th grade she won't get respectPractical Tip: Show up, claim your space, speak from your core as if you have something valuable to say - which you do.Body positions count: sit up straight, plant feet on floor, eye contact, bring hands apart and so on lend themselves to you being heard with confidenceThe listener hears confidence as well as sees itYou can learn thisThe premise of Catherine's book and why she felt so drawn to write it was to show professional woman how to become more magnetic, charismatic by our physical presence and the sound of our voiceWhat we say and the way we say it is keyLearn when to stop - that gives the impact!17:15 to 22:54       Command a RoomQuestion: I've heard you say that the listeners, the audience want you and this connects with your earlier statement about connection and relationship. At the same time there is the notion that by being confident we can command a room or attention. What would you say to women to be more willing to connect and command the space they stand in?If you want to have an impact on people you have to show upIf you do care and have an interest in how something goes you have to be willing to show up: being willing to be seenIn the context of virtual meetings turn on your cameraYou have to show up to have an impactIn real life settings be willing to be seenCatherine's advantage gained in the ensemble radio morning shows: bring your whole self into the studioBe willing to tell a story about yourself that is relatable for the audience and connectsStory: Catherine Johns bought her house as a single women which was unusual then. On her mortgage it said: Catherine Johns - SpinsterSpin-offs were created from that single storyCatherine developed a willingness to be embarrassed if the audience will benefitIf I am going to be seen fully I have to be willing to make a mistake, to be seen as not brilliant, or to be perceived as someone who a lot to learn. The more willing we are the more free we become22:54 to 28:18       LegacyQuestion: As we sit here today what else would you like to see happen in the world as a result of both your book and your professional speaking/coaching work? Catherine is happy when people tell her there is something they learned and importantly done something to better their lives as a result of what she said or wroteThis happens oftenCatherine's weekly newsletter since September 2014 - no stops - very proud of this recordSomething about the responses Catherine gets: "I did what you said and this happened!"Catherine loves that experienceHost observes how gratifying to be about our purpose and making an impact, doing some good, lifting up a person we may never meet or see or encounter.Catherine replies: It's the best!  Before I say thank you to Catherine Johns I want to mention that all social media links and connections to Catherine, her professional speaking and coaching work, her blog, her newsletter, book and even other podcast guest episodes will be posted in the Episode Notes. Inviting all listeners to make sure you drop by her website, sign up for everything you can, and do consider consulting with Catherine.  Thank you very much, Catherine, for a most delightful morning, walking along and sharing your story about being heard, making the most of communicating what we mean and say to connect and make the most of our personal and business relationships.Catherine: Thank you for the invite, Diane. It's been delightfulHere we are, at the end of the road but not the journey. How can you command a room and connect with the people listening, whether you're on a stage or at your computer? How do you have real influence on your audience? All those years on the radio … Catherine was doing virtual presentations before we had a name for them. She established relationships with people she would never even meet in person. So much so, that many still feel a bond with her today. Now we're all working on Zoom or Teams or Webex. Catherine shows executives and entrepreneurs … speakers and leaders … how to have make a genuine impact with your virtual presentations.Catherine has a special interest in women who've been overlooked and underheard in their professional lives. Mike Watson has been one of the more consistent tournament performers over his 15-year poker career, having racked up more than $12.5 million on the circuit. The St. Johns, Newfoundland native broke out in 2008, winning the WPT Bellagio Cup main event for nearly $1.7 million. In addition to numerous final tables on the high roller circuit, he also took down the 2016 EPT PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, giving him two parts of poker's elusive Triple Crown.  Watson does have two wins at the World Series of Poker. The first came in a 2011 WSOP Europe side event, and the second was a year later at the WSOP Europe when he banked $1.3 million in the high roller event. Unfortunately, neither of those WSOP events awarded bracelets. In the last couple of years, 'SirWatts' has rededicated himself to online poker, bringing his career totals to $10 million. As a result, he is now Canada's top-ranked online player according to PocketFives, and reached a peak of no. 3 in the world earlier this year.  Highlights from this interview include when wedding season collides with poker season, having professors for parents, being a 'math nerd,' the Waterloo-poker connection, life-changing money at Bellagio, re-evaluating his game, winning two WSOP events and getting no bracelets, a big score in the Bahamas, a high-stakes online run, six-figure cash game pots, winning with Sam Greenwood, working as an umpire, fooling Dan Heimiller as Martin Jacobson, and enjoying sushi pizza for breakfast.

My guest today is John Crain. John is a co-founder and CEO of SuperRare Labs which is the entity that created SuperRare - One of the top NFT art platforms in the world. John has an amazing background - he is a self taught coder, dove deep into bitcoin, discovered ethereum, found out about NFTs, had a passion for art and joined ALL of that together, to launch SuperRare in early 2018. We go all throughout the history of SuperRare, the trials and tribulations of being a founder in an emergent industry and the almost absurd conviction it takes to build. It is really inspiring to hear Johns story and it makes you understand the amount of conviction and grit that is needed to create something as successful as SuperRare We also discuss the team's pathway to decentralize the platform from SuperRare to the SuperRare DAO. I dont want to give too much away but hearing the vision where anyone can have input into the evolution of the platform is remarkable. Minutes 36:2600 to 2:00       IntroComing to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk. You'll recognize yourself in these true-life stories from women who are walking their lives while their lives walk them and the lasting difference these journeys have made. I'm your host, Diane Wyzga.Do you ever wonder if people listen to what you said?Have you ever wanted to know what to say to get the professional connections you seek?Does the idea of showing up and speaking give you Stagefright Willies? If you answered ‘yes' to any of these questions, then this podcast episode is for you.Today my guest is Catherine Johns, a professional speaker and expert in communication who's joining us from the Windy City of Chicago, Illinois. Today Catherine brings her powerful experiences as a broadcaster in large radio markets to coaching executives and entrepreneurs who want to make meaningful connections at every turn, real or virtual.  Catherine also turned her professional speaking skills to a book: Show Up and Shine to help women who've been overlooked and unheard in their professional lives.I invited Catherine to talk with us about her expertise as a professional speaker, what is personal presence and charisma, how to become more confident being heard and listened to in the business arena, and more. Welcome to the podcast, Catherine!2:00 to 6:00       Start From Where You AreI read recently that you and your husband took a stroll around your neighborhood meeting up with folks along the way. If I met up with you as you were taking a turn about the block, what's the first thing I'd notice about you?  Energy! That's the first thing we notice about most people. We all carry a certain energy; it's palpable, visible and tactileWe all have energy;  we can shape it and use it, tooSo, having some time to walk along together what else might I get to know about you?Catherine's first priority is getting to know the host by asking questions and listening closely to the  answersMost people feel under-heard most of the timeA tip to being more charismatic is not what we put “out there” but what we take inWe want to be seen and heard with a willing partnerQuick story: Catherine was talk show host. A favorite regular feature was Bug House Square based on the “loonies” who stood on a soapbox in Washington Square Park to be heard. Catherine opened the radio lines to take calls asking people questions from many many people who just wanted to talk about themselves. These folks waited a long time on the phone - sometimes an hour or more - just for the chance to be heard. The lesson for Catherine: how to approach people and what we need from each otherToday we still need to be seen and heard6:20 to 17:25       A Bit of Back Story: Radio Broadcasting CareerI'm a child of radio. I remember my mother listening to a morning broadcast out of New York City called Rambling With Gambling. In my law school years I drove home from class listening to the old Lux Radio Hour episodes like The Green Hornet and Yukon King; the sorts of programs what my dad listened to. Q: So, before we get to your professional speaking and coaching practice and your book, Show Up & Shine, I'd like to know a bit about what brought you to radio in the first place. Question: Would you tell us what was the draw about radio for you?His name was Byron. When Catherine was a freshman at Valparaiso University majoring in nursing a fellow in her dorm suggested Catherine go on campus radio because she had the voice for itThis idea was opposite of how Catherine saw herselfCatherine went to the audition because she had a crush on Byron and ended up getting the gig and he didn'tCatherine stumbled into radio on the campus station: The Station on the Tracks - next to the freight train tracksCatherine was shown what to do and told, “Now just be sexy.”Over time Catherine has built 3 different careers on her voiceLesson: we often don't know our gift until someone holds a mirror upQuestion: What came naturally to you to be able to sit in a studio to learn about and then become a radio broadcaster?Catherine is curious about a lot of things and about peopleAsking questions and listening to what people sayCatherine always loved wordsConfused parents when she decided to go into nursingAnd then things changed: make yourself available for another opportunityHost: This is how the road goes: we walk until we can't. Fortunately, someone pointed out a never considered  opportunityWhen Catherine decided to change majors and schools to get her degree in broadcasting the head of the department told her “no place for gals in broadcasting.”At that moment Catherine said, “Watch me!”And, what happened next?Catherine dug in, studied and worked her way in only 4 years' time from graduation to WLS Radio Chicago, a major market radio station!A gal wound up on a major broadcasting station! It was Catherine. So there!Catherine eventually got her own showQuestion: If a listener is thinking about making a leap into radio or some such place where “gals might not make it” what are highlights that made it all worthwhile, for youCatherine loves conversationRadio is all about conversationCatherine got lucky at WLS Chicago with the advent of ensemble morning show radio conceptInstead of being the News Gal Catherine had an opportunity to develop conversation on the airCatherine earned Side Chick exposure because Larry Lujack (the host) created space for herLarry Lujack, also called Superjock, Lawrence of Chicago, Uncle Lar, and King of the Corn Belt, was a Top 40 music radio disc jockey who was well known for his world-weary sarcastic styleIf a story was interesting, funny, or entertaining Catherine was in the spotlight where she learned to the craft of telling the story, bringing in the listeners and knowing when to stop Practical Tip: Knowing when to stop: most people “get high” on energy, excitement, and take it too farCatherine learned the brilliant Power of the PauseCatherine's mantra: “Say it once, say it well and zip it!”One of the ways people over-talk is by repeating themselvesMake your point well and leave space for the other person to say something, too17:25 to 34:23       Changing the Narrative: Reinventing Yourself -> Speakers Programs The broadcasting world came to an end as so many things do, but like so many successful professional women you chose this opportunity to Begin Anew - you reinvented yourself. You took all that wonderful knowledge, experience, ah ha's and so on and reinvented yourself as professional speaker and coach. Question: Would you let us know how that came about and the experience of moving into the next roll.Catherine got fired, as so many transitions beginRadio had been her life for 25 yearsCatherine wondered if she was able to anything else; but there were no options to quitCatherine herself: what did I really love about radio?Chunking up and chunking downChunking up: looking from the mega perspective at what she did: she is a performerJohn Landecker was another model on WLS ChicagoJohn Records Landecker is an American Top40/oldies disc jockey best known for his trademark saying "Records truly is my middle name" and creating Boogie Check, Americana Panorama, and satirical songs and bits based on current events such as "Make a Date with the Watergate", and "Press My Conference".Chunking down (granular activities): what are the skills, talents, abilities that go into being a Morning Show Side Chick: is curious, asks questions, gathers information, synthesize it, shares what she learns, balanced competing interests, team player, plays well with othersCatherine asked: where to take this tool box outside of a studio, where else to applyCatherine decided she wanted to speak but didn't like professional speakers - too much egoA conversation with a NSA conference attendee revealed her next role: be a trainerCatherine's 2 Practical Tips: Get membership in a professional society to learn and be exposed to people who do what you want to do + realize transitions can be time-consuming and depressing and hard; so stick with it through the rough patchesThis led to Catherine to a presentation skills position and eventually to professional speaker and communication expertHost notes themes of luck and resilience + diligence + mind-set to Begin Anew as well as Catherine's faith that this is the right path as more and more people and venues and opportunities show up. Willingness is hallmark of Catherine's story. Question: I'm curious: which audiences were you drawn to and how come?Professional women who were not yet senior executivesCatherine got her training gig because she was open to peopleWhen we are open to people and recognize that there is the chance for “luck”Story: A friend of a friend of a friend she met in a manicure salon led to an audition in New York; but the feedback was, “Catherine needs work on presentation skills - no eye contact.”Her experience was in radio for 25 years; there is no eye contact in radio; BUT! It was a key skill Catherine could master and meanwhile was hired for her energy to command a roomWhat the employer was looking for was a certain kind of energy and Catherine had itQuestion: Did you know you had this Super Power of commanding a room, an inherent energy? The CEO pointed it out to Catherine that she had the certain kind of energyWhen Catherine began to think about herself as a person who has influence or sway over a group so much made sense, so much fell into placeHost observes the themes of Catherine's follow-up, risk taking, persistence until something tangible rewards that. To be successful with the intimacy of radio one would have to have some form of inherent energy and draw in their voice to keep the listener engaged. Question: What is the difference between energy, vibe, charisma, and presence or are they different ways of saying the same thing and, if so, what is that thing? These words are difficult to defineCatherine thinks of charisma as the energy that happens in interactionWe are charismatic in connection with anotherThe exchange of energy is a charismaMany different ways to have charismaThere is that something you want more ofHost: Maybe it's an energy vibration exchanged between human beings.  We as human beings are exchanging energy and looking for those who are receptive to our energy. Question: Along those lines of connection, you were on a trajectory that would eventually intersect with COVID. As we transition from Zoom to a hybrid way of some online/virtual and some in-person,  What's changed in business, what's the same, what will still be important?34:23 to 36:26       ConclusionHere we are, at the end of the road but not the journey. IT WAS A little after 10 p.m. on a Friday evening in the summer of 1921. In their little house on Druid Street in the St. Johns neighborhood of Portland, Robert Green and his family were getting ready for bed when they heard the screams. Rushing to the front porch, they found their neighbor, Ann Louise Agee, in her nightclothes, wild-eyed and disheveled. “Help! Come quick! They're killing Harry!” she screamed. Green looked across at the Agee home. From where he stood, by the light of streetlamps and the few lights inside the house, he could dimly see the front porch. The door was opening and a figure was staggering out of the front door, clutching at its throat. Then it collapsed on the porch. Green sprinted across and leaped onto the porch. There he found his neighbor, carpenter Harry Agee, in a pool of blood, dying. Looking up at him, Harry opened his mouth and tried to speak. Only a ghastly gurgling resulted from the effort. Harry's throat had been slashed open. Whoever had done it had missed the jugular vein, but had cut through his windpipe. Harry's lips were moving as if he were speaking, but no words were coming out. It was as if he were trying to tell Green who had attacked him, but could not. And before he could figure out a way, he lapsed into unconsciousness from the blood loss. He died a few minutes later, on the way to the hospital. This was the opening act in a murder drama that would hold Portland spellbound throughout the summer of 1921 — and one that would convince thousands of Portlanders to lock their doors at night. This week Tim flies solo. May is gone so Tim has lost his wingman or wing woman (for political correctness).  Tim interviews Dr Paul Alexander, former member of the US Covid Task Force and advisor to the WHO, among many other roles. He has a PhD in evidenced based medicine and quotes studies faster than most of us can breathe. Paul makes a very compelling evidence  based argument that children should be treated as “already being vaccinated”. We dive deep into the data on children and covid, vaccine efficacy and what the vaccine has accomplished to this point.  It was an honor to interview Dr Alexander again and dig into the data. You can taste his passion for protecting children and getting life back to normal. We even get a hint of what it was like to work as an insider in DC at the beginning of the pandemic.  Sponsor: Our sponsor this week is Weatherby!  Perfect timing to head to  www.financialresidency.com/weatherby for a streamlined locum tenens experience. He received his bachelor's degree in epidemiology from Toronto, Ontario, a master's degree from Oxford University, and a PhD from McMaster University's Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact. He has also studied at Johns' Hopkins University. He has studied bioterrorism, advised the Canadian Government and also worked with WHO in 2008 until recently.  From 2017 until December 2019, Alexander was employed by the Washington, D.C.-based Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), where he specialized in systematic reviews. At IDSA, Alexander worked on several clinical practice guidelines. He served  in an advisory role  with Health and Human Services (HHS) under President Trump in 2020.
