Is it true he was really the meanest of the Cochise County Cowboys? Join me today as we trace Old Man Clanton from Tennessee to Arizona. We'll discuss his association with other bandits like Curly Bill Brocius and John Kinney, his alleged atrocities on the Mexican border, and finally, his untimely demise in Skull Canyon. "Here's the story of a lovely couple Who are in a cool band they call doubleVee Allan & Barb Vest went on a podcast To discuss bands that are family. Here's the story of a groovy podcast, Hosted by two guys named Uncle Gregg and Brett They were diving deep through all the records Mostly classic alternative Til the one day when the Lads met the Vests And they knew it was much more than a fad That this group must somehow form a top five list That's the way we do it on Only Three Lads Only Three Lads Only Three Lads That's the way we do it on Only Three Lads!" That's right - the focus of this week's episode is on bands containing siblings, married couples, cousins, etc. Coincidentally - actually, it's totally NOT a coincidence - our Third Lads today are the Oklahoma-based married couple, Allan & Barb Vest, who make up the band doubleVee. Allan was previously primary songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist for one of the best left-of-center indie pop bands of the early 2000s, Starlight Mints, who released four albums during the first decade of the new millennium. Barb's history notably includes writing, hosting and producing the nationally syndicated film soundtrack radio programFilmscapes, as well as editing a music webzine and performing with various bands. Together as doubleVee, Allan & Barb have crafted some astounding and wildly inventive music - the highly recommended debut concept album The Moonlit Fables of Jack the Rider in 2017, the 2019 EP, the 2022 record Treat Her Strangely (containing "Your Love Is It Real?" as heard on the hit Netflix series Wednesday), and now the newly released EP Periscope At Midnight. The music of doubleVee is a wonderful and beguiling thing - comfortingly poppy but with plenty of strange twists, turns and detours along the way. Cinematic music with a keen and often whimsical eye for storytelling, doubleVee's songs are beautiful and orchestral, but leaves you with the unsettling feeling that something grotesque may be bubbling underneath the surface. The College Football Playoff is here. In this episode, we pop the hood on the four first round matchups and break down our biggest questions. Is Oklahoma more lucky than good? Can Alabama's offense get out of its rut? How will Miami's offensive line hold up against Texas A&M's front four and a loud Kyle Field? Are the Aggies trustworthy? To what degree will Ole Miss feel the absence of Lane Kiffin? Can Oregon run against James Madison? And do both Tulane and JMU belong in the College Football Playoff? Plus, breaking news with both DJ Lagway and Dylan Raiola reportedly jumping in the transfer portal, the latest names in the Michigan coaching search, and Fernando Mendoza's Heisman victory. Long before Dickens penned A Christmas Carol, our ancestors gathered around midwinter fires to tell tales of spirits and monsters lurking in the darkness. Tonight, we explore why Christmas and ghost stories have been intertwined for thousands of years — then share true accounts that prove the tradition is very much alive. #HolidayHorrorsIN THIS EPISODE: Earlier this month I shared some true reports of people seeing Kris Kringle – or what appeared to be Kris Kringle – in real life. But there are many more of those strange sightings to share! (More Real Santa Sightings) *** Christmas has been celebrated for centuries, and gift-giving has been around in America since well before the Civil War. But how we celebrate and what we give changes depending on the time. We'll take a look at what Christmas was like for American pioneers in the 1800s. (Christmas in The Old West) *** At a Christmas party the revelers heard a horrifying scream from outside. They rushed out to hear the screams were coming from the sky, at least above the rooftops. But how could that be? It was then that they learned Oliver Lerch had disappeared – never to be seen again. (The Christmas Disappearance of Oliver Lerch) *** Nothing says Christmas like a poisonous weed! Well… you explain mistletoe! We'll look at why we're supposed to kiss under this deadly plant during the holidays. (A Kiss Under the Mistletoe) *** A horrible fire breaks out at an Oklahoma school during the holidays of 1924 – and the ghosts of the children still linger at the site. (Ghosts of the Babbs Switch School Christmas Fire) *** You might be celebrating Christmas like a viking and not even realize it. From the holiday ham to the evergreen in your living room, we'll look at how the pagan celebration of Yule influenced modern Christmas traditions. (How To Celebrate Christmas Like a Viking) *** Kids in America anxiously await the arrival of Santa Claus bounding down the chimney with gifts and candy for the good little boys and girls. But that's America. What comes down the chimney of Irish and Scottish kids may not be so jolly, plump, and loving. Some Gaelic children have to watch out for the Bodach. (Beware the Bodach at Christmas) *** It's something we're trying to revive here on Weird Darkness… the lost tradition of telling ghost stories at Christmas. In this eye-opening episode of Rising Anxieties, Mariann Sullivan dissects the agricultural industry’s transparent anxiety about the growing popularity of plant-based diets. From Farm Babe’s desperate defense of animal agriculture’s “sustainability” to Oklahoma’s hypocritical farmland ownership laws that conveniently exempt Chinese-owned Smithfield Foods, we witness an industry scrambling to maintain relevance as consumers increasingly recognize the environmental and ethical problems with…
Hosts Brad Fowler and Alex Higdon break down all the biggest storylines from around the NFL and College Football — from massive playoff implications to a shifting Super Bowl picture and a loaded CFP first round slate. We cover — the Broncos making a statement win over the Packers and why Denver suddenly looks like a legitimate Super Bowl favorite in the AFC. Bo Nix delivers his best performance of the season, the offense finds balance, and the defense remains elite as questions about Denver’s ceiling are officially answered. On the other side, the Packers’ season takes a dramatic turn as injuries pile up, including Micah Parsons, leaving Green Bay limping toward the playoffs and no longer looking like a true contender. Plus — the Chiefs dynasty over? Kansas City falls again as the offense continues to look broken, and we dive into what the future holds for Patrick Mahomes, potential roster turnover, and why this feels like a rebuild rather than a reboot. Meanwhile, Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers keep finding ways to win despite major offensive line issues, showing just how much coaching still matters in the NFL. We also break down Josh Allen once again putting the cape on as the Bills storm back from down 21–0 against the Patriots. While Allen has carried Buffalo over the past month, major concerns remain about the Bills’ defense and their ability to survive in the playoffs. On the New England side, we discuss how quickly the Patriots have closed the gap under Vrabel and McDaniels, Drake Maye’s growth, and why this team feels ahead of schedule. In other NFL action, the Rams continue to look like a Super Bowl-caliber team as Matthew Stafford plays at an MVP level and the run game surges late in the season. We ask whether the Lions have ruined their playoff hopes, why Detroit’s defense remains a glaring issue, and how dangerous Los Angeles could be down the stretch. In College Football, we make our picks for the CFP first round — breaking down Alabama vs Oklahoma, Texas A&M vs Miami, Ole Miss vs Tulane, and James Madison at Oregon. We dive into key matchups in the trenches, quarterback play, roster mismatches, and why some of these games may not be as close as they look on paper. Plus — NFL Game Balls, and more.
Payne County District Attorney Laura Austin Thomas has finally spoken publicly about the Jesse Butler case — the Stillwater, Oklahoma teenager who pleaded no contest to 11 felony charges including attempted rape, strangulation, and domestic assault against two teenage girls. Butler faced up to 78 years in prison but walked away with youthful offender status, community service, counseling, and no sex offender registration. His record will be expunged when he turns 19. In her statement, the DA defends the plea deal by claiming the victims' families were consulted, that trials for sexual assault are traumatic, and that Oklahoma law favors rehabilitation for minors. But the families tell a different story. According to victims' attorney Rachel Bussett, the plea deal was struck without the victims' approval, and both families were "vehemently opposed" to youthful offender status from the start. A motion has been filed alleging violations of Marsy's Law, Oklahoma's constitutional victims' rights amendment. Court documents reveal one victim was strangled so severely a doctor said she was 30 seconds from death. Police found video on Butler's phone showing him strangling another victim until she lost consciousness. These weren't ambiguous encounters — they were documented, repeated, violent attacks. Yet the DA's statement frames the case as "conduct by a 16-year-old male directed at similarly aged young women" in "ongoing, consensual dating relationships." In this video, we break down the DA's full statement line by line, examine what she claims versus what the court records show, and ask the question no one in Payne County seems willing to answer: When evidence is this overwhelming and violence this severe, how does community service become justice? Give to help Chris continue to make Truce William R. “Bill” Bright was born in 1921 in Coweta, Oklahoma. Though raised in a religious environment, he initially pursued business success and personal ambition. While attending the University of Southern California, Bright experienced a dramatic spiritual transformation through the influence of Christian leaders like Henrietta Mears. This encounter led him to surrender his life to Jesus Christ and ultimately shaped his calling toward full-time evangelism. In 1951, Bill and his wife, Vonette, founded Campus Crusade for Christ at UCLA with a vision to reach college students with the Gospel. He later developed The Four Spiritual Laws, a simple evangelistic tract that became one of the most widely distributed Christian tools in history. Under his leadership, Campus Crusade grew into a global movement with ministries focused on students, athletes, families, the military, and professionals. Bright also launched the Jesus Film Project in 1979, which became one of the most-translated and widely viewed films in the world. What's missing from most short bios of Bright is the depth of his involvement in the Religious Right. He organized or was present at some of their key gatherings, founded a publishing house to print their words, and raised funds among them. Bill Bright remained dedicated to fulfilling the Great Commission, often engaging in long periods of fasting and prayer for spiritual guidance. He received the prestigious Templeton Prize in 1996 for his contributions to religion and reinvested the award into Christian ministry. When he died in 2003, Campus Crusade for Christ had expanded into nearly every nation, with thousands of staff and volunteers sharing the Gospel worldwide. Bright's life stands as a testament to the global impact one person can have through faith, vision, and relentless obedience to God's call. My guest for this episode is historian John G. Make America healthy again: is that helping the food-as-medicine movement or hurting it? And why is it so important to focus on quality food as medicine- which means nutrient density and real quality- rather than settling for simply “more fruit and vegetables”? Why would you, if you can, deny people with severe diabetes and lower incomes the best-quality food possible, especially when it has the biggest ripple effect?Today, a check-in conversation with Erin Martin, one of the leaders advancing the food as medicine movement in the US. It has been an exciting, interesting, and challenging few years — from speaking on the Hill in Washington, to passing a food as medicine act in her home state of Oklahoma (which has some of the worst health crises in the country), to scaling their program of prescribing produce to reverse type 2 diabetes to over 500 patients. But also: politics, making America and children healthy again, a global and local health crisis spiralling out of control, GLP-1 drugs breaking through, and somehow food and regenerative agriculture becoming polarising, a political minefield. So much to talk about: the first social impact bond, which isn't a bond but an outcome-based payment scheme, is coming in early 2026 in Oklahoma. And super important: real data is showing massive savings when it comes to prescribing healthy vegetables, fruit, and cooking classes.More about this episode.==========================In Investing in Regenerative Agriculture and Food podcast show we talk to the pioneers in the regenerative food and agriculture space to learn more on how to put our money to work to regenerate soil, people, local communities and ecosystems while making an appropriate and fair return. #WDRadio WEEK OF DEC 14, 2025 | From an ancient Greek cave where Hercules supposedly descended into the underworld, to a 13th-century castle built to seal a bottomless pit full of demons, these locations around the world are believed by many to be actual gateways to Hell.HOUR ONE: Of course a lot of people likely don't believe in heaven or hell and many will dismiss such things as mythical tales or folklore. However there are places on Earth that could be considered hell – no not Detroit or Wichita. We're talking about actual places that look like the entrances to purgatory. And perhaps they really are. (Secret Doors to the Underworld) *** A king, a gossoon and a bear walked into a bar. No, this is not the first line of a joke, but a common occurrence in Potrero Hill in San Francisco, California, during the 1880s. The king was Frank McManus, the gossoon was Frank's baseball-playing brother, Cornelius, and the bear was a large inebriated ursine. (King of the Irish Hill) *** Why are some people suddenly vigorous, alert, and feeling much better shortly before they pass away? It is something that has happened since time began, but medical experts are still baffled by it. (Terminal Lucidity Phenomenon) *** While many say the most haunted hotel is the one in Colorado that was used in the film “The Shining” - there is evidence that one in Eureka Springs, Arkansas deals with even more paranormal activity. (The Crescent Hotel)==========HOUR TWO: Many tales describe encounters with the devil himself. Yet not all are the same. Sometimes Satan approaches his prey… other times, the lost soul goes seeking Lucifer to make a deal. Either way, the results are never favorable. (Diabolical Dealings With The Devil) *** It wasn't until recently that I'd even heard of the cryptid, Ahool. In case it's new to you as well, it's a winged cryptid that some portray as a giant bat, others claim it's a flying primate. Personally, I think it looks like a werewolf with bat wings. Whatever it is, we'll learn a bit more about the Ahool. (The Cry Of The Ahool)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: Two men were found dead in the bushes, beheaded… and emasculated. But that was just the beginning of the Mad Butcher's killing spree. (The Cleveland Torso Murders) *** Seeing reptiles in Oklahoma isn't all that uncommon – even dinosaur fossils are found in the state. But there have also been reports of something much stranger – a snake/human hybrid creature more terrifying than it sounds. Fox Sports' Joel Klatt joins The Next Round for a deep dive into the biggest storylines surrounding the College Football Playoff and the state of the sport. We preview the massive CFP matchup between Alabama and Oklahoma — the Sooners won the regular-season meeting, but can Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide get revenge when it matters most? Joel breaks down the matchup, including how critical special teams and officiating could be when Alabama and Oklahoma collide again. We also look ahead to Miami vs. Texas A&M in College Station in the first round of the playoff and debate who has the edge in one of the most intriguing opening-round games. Plus, Joel shares his thoughts on the future of Group of 5 teams in the College Football Playoff, why it matters for Tulane and James Madison to be competitive on the national stage, and whether any team playing in Round 1 can realistically win the national championship. Finally, we address the messy situation at Michigan following the firing and arrest of Sherrone Moore and what it means for the Wolverines moving forward. If you're locked into the College Football Playoff, this is a must-watch conversation with one of the most respected voices in college football.

What Happened Starts at :51 Sometimes in December we don't have enough content for a podcast... this week there is enough for a podcast. Michigan football has been thrown into chaos following the Sherrone Moore firing. This is the third out of five Warde Manuel hires in the three most important sports to have left in disgrace (also Jim Harbaugh depending on who you ask). There have been too many red flags on too many hires. There is no oversight within the athletic department and then you have to do an investigation instead of preventing one. The only reason the WiFi is better at Michigan Stadium is because of the Zach Bryan concert, not because they cared about the fan experience. Fans are just a piggy bank. Michigan is way too much in the news right now. If "a lot of people knew about this" then why didn't someone say something sooner? Warde lost credibility after his handling of Mel Pearson and he doesn't get credit for Brandon Naurato. Grandmas in Peoria know too much about the Michigan athletic department. 2. Coaching Search Bits Starts at 27:41 Michigan needs a new head football coach. How good do we feel going into it? Probably about a B-. There's not an obvious slam dunk candidate. The three big names are Kalen DeBoer, Kenny Dillingham, and Jedd Fisch. If Alabama wins their first playoff game then DeBoer is almost entirely off the table, if they lose to Oklahoma then there's enough smoke to believe he might think about it. Would DeBoer really leave Alabama though? It's not a place that coaches leave and he's a long shot even if they lose to Oklahoma. Kenny Dillingham played for Arizona State and has a lot of family and connections in Phoenix, he might just be a long shot to convince to move from home. Kenny Dillingham is young, he watches Stranger Things and doesn't understand all the references. What about Jeff Brohm? Jedd Fisch is good at roster construction and handling QBs, something that would be nice for Michigan right now. Jake Butt had a strong endorsement for Jedd. Some coaches wouldn't have former players stomping for them. Jason Eck is a fun name but he's never proven himself at a major program. Based on everything so far, it feels like it's probably Jedd Fisch (PENDING A BACKGROUND CHECK). Which assistant coaches/coordinators would you keep? 3. Hot Takes, Men's Basketball vs Maryland Starts at 54:31 Takes hotter than... actually we need takes about half of where they could go. We need to dial it back this week. Thankfully we can now turn our attention to basketball! Michigan 101, Maryland 83, a strange game. David Coit was hitting threes from every heavenly covered shot. When Michigan was down by 9 Kenpom still had them 76% to win. Maryland went 14-27 from three and Michigan still covered the Kenpom spread. This game was the script for Michigan to lose a game and won by 18. Brian reads Yaxel's boxscore poetically because it deserves it. Solomon Washington got ejected for two technicals. Michigan navigated foul trouble and you probably didn't even notice. Michigan is actually top 50 in three point shooting. 4. Men's Basketball vs Villanova Starts at 1:38:12 They went up by 30 at halftime and only won by 30?? What are we even doing here. You look at some of these top 50, top 25 teams on the schedule, could they beat Michigan in Ann Arbor? No way. Being #1 in two point defense with this schedule is insane. Michigan is identifying their weaknesses and working on them, that's terrifying for opposing teams. What is this team's weakness now? Hey, shout out to undefeated Nebrasketball! This full-length interview with retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke brings together two deeply disturbing stories — the Jesse Butler case in Oklahoma and the tragic death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner aboard a cruise ship. Both cases expose something bigger than individual acts of violence. They reveal systems, institutions, and family dynamics that shape who gets protected — and who gets overlooked. Part One: The Predator's Playbook We examine how Jesse Butler allegedly built trust, manipulated perception, and inflicted escalating violence behind a mask of charm. Love-bombing, grooming, strangulation, digital trophies, calibrated threats — this is the behavioral blueprint of a predator operating in plain sight. Part Two: The System That Failed Despite overwhelming evidence and two victims ready to testify, Butler walked away with community service, counseling, and the promise of a clean record. We dig into the deal-making, the optics, the backlash, and the profound message this outcome sends to victims everywhere. Part Three: The Death of Anna Kepner Conflicting family stories, minimized aggression, outside witnesses telling a different truth, and behavioral indicators investigators look for when tragedy fractures the narrative. Robin explains how trained professionals cut through damage control to find reality. This episode isn't just about two cases — it's about the patterns, systems, and human behaviors that allow violence to go unchecked until it explodes into public view. #JesseButler #AnnaKepner #TrueCrimePodcast #HiddenKillers #TonyBrueski #RobinDreeke #VictimAdvocacy #BehavioralAnalysis #JusticeMatters #CrimeAndAccountability Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Two teenage boys in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Both charged with first-degree rape. Both charged with strangulation. Both were 17 at the time of the alleged crimes. Both attacked teenage girls they were dating. One of them walked out of court with community service. The other is sitting in jail on $30,000 bond, facing five years to life. What's the difference? Jesse Mack Butler was convicted on ten rape-related charges in 2025. One of his victims nearly died—her doctor testified she was thirty seconds from death during a strangulation attack. Police found videos on his phone of the assaults. He faced 78 years in prison. He got 150 hours of community service. Butler's father is the former Director of Operations for Oklahoma State football. The judge who granted him youthful offender status holds two degrees from OSU. A state lawmaker has called for a grand jury investigation, saying the deal "smacks of political favor." Now there's a second case. Canyn Rion Porter was charged in December 2025 with first-degree rape and strangulation. The allegations are strikingly similar. But Porter doesn't have family connections to OSU. He doesn't have a private attorney. He applied for a public defender. So what happens now? Does Porter get the same deal Butler got? Or does he go to prison while Butler stays home under a curfew? Either answer raises serious questions about how justice works in Payne County—and who it works for. In this video, I break down both cases, the controversial youthful offender statute, the family connections that have people asking questions, and what these cases tell us about accountability in America. The question isn't just what happens to Jesse Butler or Canyn Porter. It's what happens to the next girl. #JesseButler #CanynPorter #Stillwater #StillwaterOklahoma #OklahomaState #OSU #PayneCounty #YouthfulOffender #JusticeSystem #TrueCrime #TrueCrimeNews #CriminalJustice #JJHumphrey #CommunityService #TwoTierJustice Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
