Tulsa is a thriving city with a diverse cultural and arts scene, but it wasn't always that way. The city suffered through the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. The area was settled by the Creek Nation after they were removed from their ancestral homes in Alabama and Georgia and Tulsa eventually became an oil boomtown. The history here has led to hauntings in many locations and we are joined by Teri French of Tulsa Spirit Tours to explore the history and hauntings of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Grandmother Called in a BigfootMany moons ago, on the Glover River in McCurtain County, Oklahoma, my grandparents were at a fishing spot they called the Big Hole. They were busy catfishing when they heard a yell from up the river. For the fun of it, my grandma decided to mimic the sound and yelled right back. Not long after, they heard a huge splashing from up the river coming toward them, as if a large animal was quickly approaching. As the splashing sound got closer, they started feeling uneasy and decided to pack up and leave. My grandma went ahead to the truck to start it up so they could get out faster, and heard some leaves rustling in the woods next to her. She rejoined my grandpa to help with the packing, and once they got everything loaded up, they saw a huge shadow in the trees. They didn't wait around to find out what it was and got out of dodge. She's told me this story many times throughout my life, and I've always figured it was Bigfoot. But I never paid any mind to what the yell could have been until this weekend, when I visited them, and played the Ohio howl recording. I had gotten her attention, and she called my grandpa over so he could hear it, too. My grandparents both said it was just like the sound they heard that day they were fishing at the Big Hole. Little did they know at the time, they had a near encounter with Bigfoot.Join my Supporters Club for $4.99 per month for exclusive stories:https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/what-if-it-s-true-podcast--5445587/support

Riding Shotgun With Charlie #233 Phil Journey NRA BOD Member I had a chance to catch up with Phil Journey at the NRA Annual Meetings back in April. He's quite an interesting man with some long roots in the Second Amendment and with the NRA. He was on the list of four reform candidates last year in 2024. This year, of course, there were 28 reformers that people were supporting, many who did get onto the Board of Directors of the NRA. He spends times telling us about his collection of firearms, how he got into politics and ran for office, and some of the inside dirt on what was going on with NRA leadership. Phil is from Kansas and grew up with a couple of uncles, one was a gunsmith and the other was an inventor. His father used to hunt and got him into shooting. In law school, he got into competitive shooting and made it to second place in IPSC in Oklahoma. At one point, he spent more time making sure everyone else had the rights to keep shooting and owning firearms. While in law school he had three semesters on Constitutional law, one semester was only on the First Amendment, but nothing on the Second Amendment. Working on his dissertation, he pointed out that at that time, much of the thought was that it was a collectivist theory right and the courts reflected that. But he realized it was an individual right. That's when he decided this was going to be his cross to bear. Getting out of law school, he started working on some campaigns for the US Senate. He learned a lot in those days, thinking candidates would read some of the pro-gun literature he would give candidates. Back then he started his ties with the NRA as an election volunteer coordinator, He got 5,000 people to come to a city council meeting. This was how he got involved in political action committees. Phil's career was as a practicing attorney. He was appointed to the Kansas Senate in 2003. After a handful of years in the state Senate, he was elected to the Judicial District Court. Having these positions did interfere with his business. He also got into other businesses like storage rentals. At one point, he sold several firearms to fund one of his campaigns so he didn't have to ask for money. Phil is also into collecting cars as well as guns. We learn about the extensive collection, how he acquired some of the guns and cars. Back in 1995, Neal Knox helped get him elected to the NRA Board of Directors. Even back then there were issues with Wayne LaPierre. One is that if there was a contract that was more than $100,000, it had to be in writing and passed by two of the three executive officers. LaPierre would make them oral contracts and not run them by the executives. Journey and Knox did get pushed off the board, but only Phil was able to get back on it. During the years when he wasn't on the board, he still kept an eye on the goings on, including what Leticia James was up to in New York. With some help, he was able to get back onto the board in 2020. He noticed that the board meetings were much shorter than they used to be and he realized that wasn't quite right. There was a lot of ‘go along to get along' happening with the BOD. Reading the petition from James, he saw that the things that were wrong in the 1990's were four times worse. Phil gets into several things that were going on with the NRA and how it needed to be changed. In 2024, he got together with Rocky Marshall, Dennis Fusaro, and Jeff Knox and started a small reform team. They all got elected onto the board to start making changes. This year, there were many more reformers on the ballot, and many were elected. However, he does get into how it was a mess and how much of a mess it was. Personally, I did vote for the 28 reformers. I have had the new EVP, Doug Hamlin, on the show (episode 213). I do believe we need to keep the NRA and make the changes necessary to maintain our Second Amendment rights. The NRA has been around for over 150 years and want to see it for another 150 years. WIth Phil and the new reformers, I think we're in good hands and onto a better and stronger NRA. Favorite quotes: “What have they not taught me about? And it was the Second Amendment.” “The whole legislative process is to keep things from becoming law.” “It's easier to kill legislation than it is to get it passed.” “It was a cultural problem inside the organization.” National Rifle Association https://home.nra.org/ NRA ILA https://www.nraila.org/ YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/NRAVideos X https://x.com/NRA Instagram https://www.instagram.com/NRA/ NRA Publications YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@NRApubs Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. On this week’s Granger Smith Podcast, Granger sits down with Christian hip-hop artist, spoken word poet, and all-around encourager, Dillon Chase—and the conversation is as real as it gets. From the Texas panhandle to the heart of Oklahoma, Dillon shares his powerful testimony of growing up surrounded by addiction and pain, and how those hard roads ultimately led him straight to Jesus. Dillon gets honest about what it means to suffer as a Christian—walking through special needs parenting, prodigal children, and the reality that following Christ doesn’t mean life gets easier. In fact, sometimes the suffering goes even deeper, but God’s goodness is always greater. The guys talk about the transformation that happens when you move from “knowing about God” to really knowing Him, how true discipleship changes everything, and why the local church—and having real spiritual mentors—matters so much. Dillon opens up about his journey from secular rap to using his music and spoken word as a platform for the gospel, with encouragement from Christian hip-hop legend Lecrae and a passion to see lives changed, not just entertained. They dive into the messy beauty of church history, denominations, expository preaching, and how reading the Bible for more than just “comfort” can actually confront, challenge, and reshape our lives. Plus, Dillon performs a moving spoken word piece live on the show. If you’ve ever wrestled with suffering, struggled with church hurt, or wondered how to hold onto hope when life gets hard, this episode will encourage and equip you. Listen in for: ➡️ A raw, unfiltered testimony about faith in the fire ➡️ Why “suffering is temporary, but God’s goodness is forever” (2 Corinthians 4) ➡️ Behind-the-scenes stories from the Christian music world ➡️ The life-changing impact of discipleship and community ➡️ How God can redeem even the darkest parts of our story Check out Dillon’s music on all platforms and stay tuned for his upcoming album, “Not Destroyed.” Subscribe, rate, and share this episode if it resonates—because someone you know probably needs this hope, too. ********************************************** CONNECT WITH MY PODCAST: Instagram► https://instagram.com/GrangerSmithPod YouTube► https://www.YouTube.com/@UCD1JSCn257RlatavklMALyg My NEW BOOK HERE▶ www.grangersmith.com APPAREL™️ GEAR ▶ https://YeeYeeApparel.com SUBSCRIBE HERE ▶ http://smarturl.it/gschannelsubscribe Subscribe to my family channel here ▶ http://youtube.com/TheSmithsTV TALK TO ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Instagram► https://instagram.com/GrangerSmith Facebook► https://facebook.com/GrangerSmith Twitter► https://twitter.com/GrangerSmith Website► https://GrangerSmith.com See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of Gangland Wire, retired Tulsa homicide detective Mike Huff joins host Gary Jenkins to break down one of the most shocking mob hits in U.S. history. Det. Huff tells about the 1981 murder of businessman Roger Wheeler at Southern Hills Country Club and the investigation that ended in the arrest of Boston F.B.I. agent Paul Rico. You can learn more about this story by reading Mike's book, Killing My Father: The Inside Story of the Biggest FBI Corruption Scandal in History. What started as a local homicide case quickly unraveled into a national organized crime conspiracy involving Florida Jai Alai gambling, the Winter Hill Gang, and notorious Boston mob boss Whitey Bulger. Huff shares how he uncovered links to FBI corruption, the Dixie Mafia, and hitman John Martorano, who eventually confessed to the killing. Huff also opens up about working with Roger Wheeler's son, David, the emotional toll of the investigation, and how their joint efforts finally exposed the truth. Transcript [0:00] Well, hey, all you wiretappers, good to be back here in the studio of Gangland Wire. I have another former cop, a retired copper from not too far away from Tulsa, Oklahoma, and he has a heck of a story. He's written a book about it, but it's a heck of a story. Down in Tulsa, Oklahoma, they've got a mob murderer. Well, now, mob murders don't just go down every day in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and it's a really interesting story that ties clear back to to the highlight business down in florida to the winter hill gang in uh boston massachusetts uh to whitey bulger really and and a hit man named john moderano and to a one of the infamous corrupt fbi agents out of boston you know they seem to have had a problem in the boston fbi for a period of years there and a couple three of their guys end up going to jail uh over probably being a little bit overly uh that they forgot where the line was it looks to me like but anyhow it was uh it's a retired detective mike huff welcome mike, Well, hey, welcome to U2. Thank you for doing this. All right, Mike. Now, tell us a little bit about your career. You know, how did you come up through the ranks in Tulsa PD? Well, I started in January of 1975. [1:20] I got promoted to a detective in 1980. I didn't much like it. It wasn't enough action. I had a good career on the street. But I like my supervisor a lot. So I stuck with this being a detective. [1:39] In May of 81, May 27th, you know, I just got to work. I was checking on a guy that I had shot three weeks earlier who was in intensive care. We're just sitting there and we're talking about we're going to eat supper. And I was on the phone with the hospital. Checking on this guy's condition, and police radio came on and said, we need all the homicide detectives to head out to Southern Hills Country Club on a shooting. I guess 5-0s that night, you know, we hit it out there, and, you know, Southern Hills, even at that time, before a lot of all the major golf tournaments they've since had, was a very, well, it was the kind of place that I wasn't familiar with. [2:34] Everybody with money was part of that country club, and I wasn't one of that crowd. There's a middle-aged man swamped over in a seated car. He'd been shot between the eyes. It was a little bit foreign to me. You know, I'd been a homicide detective for a year and had been to a good bunch of homicid...
In this gripping episode of The Guilty Files: Uncovered, Brian unpacks the chilling story of Jeremy Bryan Jones—a charismatic drifter who used charm, stolen identities, and the cracks in the system to hide in plain sight across the American South. For over a decade, Jones drifted from state to state under the name John Paul Chapman, manipulating those around him, passing background checks, and leaving behind a trail of violence that went undetected for far too long. But in September 2004, a natural disaster set in motion a series of events that would finally expose the predator beneath the persona. As Hurricane Ivan barreled into Alabama, Jeremy Jones found shelter with the Bentley family—strangers who offered him a place to stay during the storm. Just days later, in the quiet rural community of Turnerville, 45-year-old Lisa Marie Nichols was dead. A beloved mother and community member, Lisa had no idea the man knocking on her door that day was a killer. What followed was a tragic encounter that shocked the community and led to Jones's arrest—but that was just the beginning. The story takes a bizarre turn when Jones, just days after the murder, called police himself. Casually chatting about the weather, he confessed to killing a woman, leading investigators to keep him on the line long enough to locate and arrest him at a Mobile bus station. Once in custody, Jones began confessing to a staggering number of crimes—twenty-one murders across five states, including the infamous Freeman family killings in Oklahoma and the murder of Tina Mayberry in Georgia. But the shocking wave of admissions soon gave way to confusion and frustration, as Jones began recanting his claims one by one.He would later admit to fabricating many of the stories to earn better food and phone privileges in jail, leaving behind a tangled mess for investigators and desperate families trying to find the truth. The case revealed just how vulnerable systems were at the time. Jones had managed to use a stolen identity for years, slipping through the cracks of disconnected databases and outdated protocols. A fingerprint on a beer can at the crime scene, DNA evidence linking him to Lisa's murder, and bloodstains on his clothing painted a clear picture. But the ease with which he moved through communities—passing background checks and gaining people's trust—was a wake-up call for law enforcement nationwide. The courtroom saw swift justice. In October 2005, Jones was tried and found guilty on all counts, including capital murder, rape, burglary, sexual abuse, and kidnapping. The jury voted 10-2 in favor of the death penalty, and he was sentenced to die by lethal injection. His appeals have been denied, and he remains on death row at Holman Correctional Facility in Alabama. For Lisa's family, the trial brought some measure of closure, but for the loved ones of other victims Jones claimed responsibility for, the aftermath was far murkier. Many were left in limbo, unsure if their grief had been exploited by a man who treated life and death like a game. The Bentley family, who had welcomed Jones into their home during the hurricane, struggled with the deep betrayal of having unknowingly harbored a killer. And the small town of Turnerville would never be the same again. This case isn't just about one murder—it's about the broader dangers posed by predators who exploit trust, the phenomenon of false confessions in serial crime cases, and how the systems we rely on can fail in devastating ways. It also highlights how moments of chaos, like natural disasters, can create openings for the most dangerous individuals to do the most harm.In this episode, Brian unravels the layers of deception, examines the legal and investigative missteps, and reflects on the long shadow Jones cast over the victims, their families, and the communities left reeling in his wake. Listener discretion is advised, as the episode includes explicit details of sexual violence, homicide, and disturbing crime scenes. This is a story that forces us to look closely at the dark corners of human behavior—and the systems we trust to keep us safe.Tune in to The Guilty Files: Uncovered for the full story.

SummaryIn this engaging episode of Startup Junkies, hosts Daniel Koonce and Caleb Talley welcomed back Leo Orpin, co-founder of Black Apple, as the cidery approaches its tenth anniversary. Leo shared the remarkable journey of building Arkansas's first (and still only) cidery, revealing how the brand's steady, strategic growth and willingness to “fail fast” have fueled its success. From humble beginnings as a homebrewing hobby between friends, Black Apple's story is one of grit, creativity, and timing. Leo reflects on early years marked by rapid scaling, boundless optimism, and a bit of ignorance that, in hindsight, helped fuel their boldness. Yet, the biggest challenges were yet to come, including the impact of COVID-19, which hit just as Black Apple was preparing for explosive growth and even debuting at a major cider expo in France.Furthermore, Leo describes their post-pandemic evolution: adapting to changing supply chains, embracing market feedback, and expanding both their downtown Springdale taproom—now a full bar and local hotspot—and their reach into Oklahoma and Kansas.Transparency, quality, and creativity set Black Apple apart. Their team experiments relentlessly with flavors—sometimes producing wild successes like strawberry dill pickle cider! And Leo's advice to his younger self? “Slow down,” invest in data, and be patient with risks. For entrepreneurs and cider lovers alike, this episode is a testament to resilience, community-building, and the sweet rewards of authentic innovation. I finished Freshman year of HS! It wasn't exactly what I had expected but to be honest, But I am not exactly sure what I expected. Here's my main tips: Be open – to people, to try new things, to new experiencesBe open to new friends and friendshipsBe involved with school activities – sports, clubs etc. – which helps you meet different people.I really enjoyed homecoming because it created so many classic high school memories. Another highlight was my AP Human Geography class. Though the class was stressful, I loved the teacher and met a lot of good friends! Now that it's summer, I am picking up a couple of hobbies!! I love crocheting – and I have made baby blankets, plushies etc.I am also now learning to sew and to make a quiltI started because I saw a documentary on Netflix called “Quilters” which is about a group of men in prison who are making quilts, and it looked so cool! Also I am also co-hosting a local radio show. Can you believe it? In this captivating episode of On the Brink with Andi Simon, I welcomes an unstoppable force in the world of finance, Victoria Woods—entrepreneur, wealth advisor, speaker, author, and the renowned Financial Diva. What makes Victoria's story so compelling isn't just her success in managing money for millionaires and billionaires—it's how she got there, and what she's teaching women everywhere about stepping into financial power. Victoria's journey began in humble, even challenging circumstances. Growing up poor, abandoned by her father at 11, she learned early how to hustle, survive, and eventually thrive. From organizing games for neighborhood kids to modeling for Montgomery Ward in exchange for school clothes, she was a born entrepreneur. But it was her uncanny ability to see opportunity where others saw limits that ultimately launched her into success. Women, It is Time To Master Your Money Her first “real” pivot came while working in retail. Rather than taking a promotion, she pitched a new concierge buying service to her boss—a bold move that soon had executives handing her their credit cards and letting her shop for their wardrobes. That fearless innovation caught the attention of a financial executive who saw something unique in Victoria: resilience, determination, and an uncanny knack for follow-through. He recruited her into the world of financial advising. Seven months later, Victoria took the leap—and never looked back. Now the founder and CEO of ChappelWood Financial Services in Edmond, Oklahoma, Victoria advises high-net-worth individuals, particularly women who are often underserved or underrepresented in wealth management. But her mission is broader: to educate and empower women about their finances, especially business owners who need to understand, not fear, their numbers. Watch our podcast video on YouTube here: Key Lessons from Victoria Woods on Women, Money and Mastering Your Future 1. Your Gut Is Your Superpower—But So Are Your Numbers. Victoria reminds listeners that while your instincts matter, success demands fluency in your financials. “If you're not comfortable with the numbers, you've got to get comfortable,” she says. “You should be able to read your profit and loss statements, understand your balance sheet, and question your accountant.” Her practical advice: take an accounting class—even if you're already running a company. Know your numbers or risk being run by them. 2. Don't Outsource What You Don't Understand. Too many women assume someone else—often a spouse—will handle their finances. Victoria pushes back. “90% of women will manage their own money at some point in their life,” she says. “You must know what you own, owe, spend, and invest.” Whether you're growing a business, selling one, or inheriting one, financial literacy is not optional. 3. Exit on Your Own Terms. One of Victoria's most powerful messages is about preparing for what's next. Succession planning, business exits, and legacy planning all require strategic thought before there's a crisis. “Don't plan in the middle of a tornado,” she says. “Start when the sun is shining.” She shares how she's guided women through inheriting family businesses, navigating complex buyouts, and staying strong in boardrooms full of skeptics. 4. Build Your Team with Intention. When hiring financial advisors, accountants, or legal professionals, Victoria encourages women to trust both their head and their heart. “Would you want to have dinner with this person every month?” she asks. Chemistry and clarity matter. Her book, It's All About the Money, Honey!, includes practical questions women should ask potential advisors—plus the answers they should expect to hear. 5. Serve First, Sell Second. At the heart of her success is a simple philosophy: be the easy button. Whether solving a client's complex tax issue or finding an international attorney for a property dispute, her focus is always service. That's how she built a practice with 100% retention and a global clientele. “Clients don't want more work,” she says. “They want someone who makes their lives easier.” You can read more in her book, "It's All About the Money, Honey," on Amazon. Why This Conversation about Money and Women Matters Now Women control more wealth today than at any time in history, and the number of women-owned businesses is soaring. Yet many still feel unprepared to manage that wealth with confidence. This episode is a powerful reminder that financial empowerment is about knowledge, confidence, and the courage to ask questions. As Victoria says, “Don't take advice from broke people—physically, financially, or spiritually.” Whether you're launching a startup, scaling a company, or planning a graceful exit, take time to get financially fluent. The future is female—and she should be well-funded. Learn More To learn more about Victoria Woods, visit ChappelWood.com or search for The Financial Diva online. You can also find her book It's All About the Money on Amazon and listen to selected chapters she's recorded to hear her passion and humor come alive. Ready to get off the brink?
