Over a Quarter (28.2%) of UK small businesses reveal it will be make or break for their business over the next 6 months 1 in 5 SME’s say that government support has not been/will not be helpful at all 1 in 4 of the UK’s small businesses will have no choice but to change their current business model in response to COVID-19 At the start of this year 2020 looked promising for UK small-business owners. Britain had a majority UK Government; Brexit outcomes were becoming a lot clearer and business confidence was starting to flourish. However, following the global Covid-19 crisis, markets are falling, supply-chains have slowed right down and sales for businesses with a high street presence have seen a huge drop in revenue with many outlets having to stop trading altogether. All in all, the current outlook for small businesses does not look promising. This is also backed up by recent research carried out amongst small businesses in the UK by research and insight agency, 3Gem. As lockdown measures start to ease, for a lot of small businesses it will never be ‘business as normal’ again. Over a quarter (25.2%) will unfortunately need to completely change and adapt how they currently run their business in response to COVID-19. Also 28.2% revealed that the next six months will be make or break for their business. Top 5 changes small businesses are currently planning /planned in response to COVID-19: No longer interacting with customers as much (40.9%) Generally cutting back (31.8%) More company investment in protective clothing (30.1%) Adapting office to allow more personal space for staff (24.1%) Charging more for our services/products (20.7%) In addition, 19% of small businesses will have no choice but to reduce current head count by making redundancies and 16.8% cutting staff wages in response to COVID-19. When asked if government support has been well received by small businesses, 24% said it had helped a lot. 37.8% said a little. However, one in five small businesses (20.6%) revealed that current government support on offer has not helped their business at all.
