Welcome to episode #1047 of Thinking With Mitch Joel (formerly Six Pixels of Separation). Simon Rogers has spent his career turning data into stories that help us better understand the world... and ourselves. A former news editor at The Guardian, where he founded and edited its influential Datablog, Simon is now the Data Editor at Google, working with Google Trends, one of the largest publicly accessible datasets of human curiosity and behaviour ever created. He is also the co-host of The Data Journalism Podcast and a longtime advocate for open data, visualization and making complex information meaningful. His new book, What We Ask Google - A Surprisingly Hopeful History Of Humankind, explores what billions of searches reveal about our private fears, shared vulnerabilities, cultural obsessions and desire to help one another. In this episode, Simon discusses why search offers a uniquely intimate portrait of humanity... not the carefully curated version we present on social media, but the questions we ask when we genuinely need answers. He explains how searches surrounding grief, friendship, parenting, health and crisis reveal that people are often far less alone than they feel, and perhaps more compassionate than our public discourse suggests. We also explore Google Trends as a cultural and predictive signal, the communities formed through shared curiosity, and why being surrounded by data does not necessarily make us more insightful. Simon reflects on how AI is changing the language and complexity of our searches without fundamentally changing what humans want to know. What emerges is a fascinating portrait of search as a collective stream of consciousness... chaotic, vulnerable, curious and surprisingly hopeful. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 53:45. Ready for every boardroom.Mamdani sat down with Jon Stewart and made democratic socialism sound like libraries and fire departments. We break down why that framing collapses the second you look at what DSA policy actually says versus how it gets marketed. We get into the rent freeze experiment that already ran in New York, the difference between a social safety net and seizing the means of production, the perverse incentive problem, and why the people this movement celebrates should set off alarm bells. Plus the aggressive-agreement trap: where the left is right about helping workers, and where the branding hides something very different.Tom reacts to a viral Fox News interview with a national co-chair of the DSA—a clip so extreme he initially assumed it had to be a setup. Joining Tom is Drew as the two go point by point through the DSA platform laid out on air: abolishing the Senate, replacing the presidency and Supreme Court, abolishing ICE, opening borders with amnesty, defunding the Pentagon, abolishing prisons, and bringing most large corporations under government ownership. Tom argues this is communism unmasked, and explains why America's founders deliberately built a republic with checks and balances to protect citizens—even from a president they hate—drawing a stark contrast with what happens under unchecked power in places like China and Iran. The conversation then digs into the deeper engine Tom sees behind radical leftism: an ideology rooted in resentment and an "overproduction of elites"—young people loaded with debt and taught that virtue means finding how you're oppressed. Drew pushes the economic angle hard, arguing that a generation locked out of the capitalism ladder, priced out of housing, and drowning in household debt has little reason to defend a system that isn't working for them. Together they wrestle with inflation, minimum wage, NIMBYism, and whether you can defuse the ideological bomb without first fixing the economy. A candid, combative breakdown of one of the most consequential political fault lines in America. Tom takes on Mayor Mamdani's plan to launch five city-owned grocery stores in New York—a $70 million, taxpayer-funded endeavor promising a core basket of goods at 30% below retail. Joining Tom is Drew, who pushes back and presses on the specifics as the two work through why running a grocery store is one of the hardest businesses on earth, operating on razor-thin 1 to 3% margins. Tom walks through the economics step by step: even zeroing out rent, taxes, and profit, a 30% discount on core goods leaves an unavoidable gap—one the taxpayer has to close. He explains how artificially low prices distort the market, put upward pressure on surrounding stores, and threaten to drive local bodegas out of business (who are already suing). Drawing on his own experience selling into Walmart with Quest, Tom lays out the "kingmaker" dynamic and the Vlasic Pickle cautionary tale to show how a state-backed buyer would inevitably bully distributors and suppliers down the chain until someone—often the lowest-paid worker or farmer—absorbs the loss. He points to real-world failures in Baldwin, Florida; Erie, Kansas; and a questionable case in Atlanta, and connects it all to the DSA's July program calling for food, energy, medicine, and transportation to be run "not for profit." The core question Tom leaves you with: what are the odds a government bureaucrat runs a grocery store better than Walmart? His answer is blunt—zero.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Joel Salatin: The Real Impact of Fertilizer Shortages on Farmers | The Next Farm Crisis Starts Now

Stijn Schmitz welcomes Joel Salatin to the show. Joel Salatin is a self described Christian Libertarian Environmentalist Capitalist Lunatic Farmer. Salatin describes a deeply distorted US agricultural landscape, where massive oversupply of corn and soybeans coexists with a historic cattle shortage. Half of domestic corn goes to ethanol, not food, and China's pursuit of self-sufficiency is eroding soybean exports, yet government bailouts keep older, risk-averse farmers locked into unprofitable cropping cycles. This parasitic dependence on subsidies props up unneeded production while stifling the market signals that would otherwise push farmers toward cattle, a switch he demonstrated could be highly profitable and capital-efficient. The fertilizer and energy shocks from Middle East conflicts further expose the fragility of input-dependent farming. Salatin noted that rising fuel costs drive farm bankruptcies and accelerate land consolidation into the hands of patient capital, including family offices and billionaires. He emphasized that genuine food security is not threatened by lack of production but by water scarcity and desertification driven by vegetative loss from overgrazing and continuous cropping. Instead, he champions a biological paradigm of farming that builds soil through cover crops, intensive rotational grazing, and on-farm composting to eliminate synthetic inputs. His own Polyface Farms exemplifies this model, integrating livestock, forest, and direct marketing to create a resilient, local carbon economy. Salatin contends that the path forward lies not in propping up the failing industrial system but in entrepreneurial adoption of regenerative practices that mimic nature's nutrient cycles and restore hydrological balance. Admirers hail him as the world’s most famous farmer, the high priest of the pasture, and Virginia’s most eclectic thinker since Thomas Jefferson. Detractors label him a bio-terrorist, Typhoid Mary, charlatan, and starvation advocate. Armed with high school and college debate trophies, 16 published books, and a thriving multi-generational family farm, Salatin draws on decades of food, farming, and fantasy to captivate global audiences. Equally at home herding cows or keynoting for Wall Street CEOs, he covers profitable regenerative farming techniques alongside cultural debates like orthodoxy versus heresy. A staple on radio and podcasts for preppers, homesteaders, ecological farmers, and foodies, Salatin blends practical, can-do entrepreneurial solutions with passionate sustainability advocacy.

How did life get started? We all know that the Bible tells us that life got started when God created it. But we have also learned, perhaps in school, or reading the news, that evolutionists believe that life could have started in the distant past all by itself if the conditions were right. Perhaps you have read that scientists can form amino acids in the laboratory.Besides the fact that amino acids are a long way from life, the amino acids made in the laboratory are the wrong kind for life. The idea that life can form spontaneously under the right conditions places modern evolutionary scientists in a very precarious position. One assumption of evolutionary scientists is that the early earth had no oxygen. Oxygen destroys amino acids. Yet geologists tell us that oxidation even in the oldest rocks proves that the earth has always had an oxygen atmosphere. Besides, if the earth didn't have an oxygen atmosphere when the first amino acids formed, that means there was no ozone, a form of oxygen, to protect those amino acids. Amino acids are quickly destroyed by ultraviolet light from the sun. So, you see, with or without oxygen, amino acids can't begin to form. The truth is that the Bible offers the only sensible explanation for the origin of life. As the great scientist Louis Pasteur said, "Life can only come from life." And the Bible tells us that eternal life can only come from the eternal life-giver, Jesus Christ.Psalm 14:1"The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.”Prayer: Father, in Your wisdom, You have put to shame those who would deny You. Thank You for salvation in Jesus. In this episode, we revisit the Rose Petal Murder case with Troy Styles of Blunt Force Media to discuss significant new developments that could reshape the case. In February 2025, after brief deliberations, a Greenville County jury convicted Zachary Hughes of the October 2021 murder of Christina Parcell. Hughes was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case has now been remanded to the circuit court, where a judge will determine whether newly discovered evidence, following the victim's fiancé's recent guilty plea, warrants a new trial. Hughes' direct appeal has been placed on hold pending that decision. One of the issues raised on appeal is Hughes' claim that he was not permitted to present a complete defense at trial. Hughes has maintained that he killed Parcell to protect her minor daughter from what he believed was ongoing sexual abuse.  Seton Tucker and Matt Harris began the Impact of Influence podcast shortly after the murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh. Despite what the headlines suggest, most professionals aren't as far behind on AI as they think they are. In this episode, I'm joined by Raman Rai, an award-winning AI product and deployment leader, to explore what it really takes to thrive as AI transforms the workplace.  Raman has helped organizations move AI from strategy into real-world adoption, working with Fortune 100 companies, early-stage founders, and leadership teams. Formerly at PwC and Google, she also helped scale one of the UK's largest enterprise GenAI programs, reaching more than 200,000 people globally in partnership with OpenAI, Microsoft, and Harvey. Her work focuses on the human side of AI adoption, helping organizations build trust, embrace meaningful change, and ensure AI creates greater access and opportunity for more people. In our conversation, we discuss why so many professionals feel overwhelmed by AI and why those feelings are both understandable and more common than you may think. Raman explains why no one has all the answers yet, why learning AI on your own terms matters more than trying to keep up with every new development, and how leaders can introduce AI in ways that help people adapt with confidence. We also explore what it really means to become AI-literate and why understanding your own workflow is the key to finding meaningful opportunities to use AI. Finally, we examine how bias emerges in AI systems and why representative data and diverse perspectives are essential to building better technology. Raman also shares the biggest mistakes leaders make when introducing AI, why investing in people is just as critical as investing in technology, and how organizations can adopt AI with purpose. Join us for this timely conversation and discover how to stay brave, valuable, and visible in the age of AI. Key Points From This Episode: Introducing Raman Rai and today's conversation about thriving in the age of AI. [01:00] Why most professionals are not as behind on AI as they think. [04:24] Understanding AI adoption rates and what global AI usage really looks like. [06:29] Practical ways organizations can successfully introduce AI in the workplace. [08:50] Identifying high-value AI use cases that improve everyday workflows. [13:04] Why we're still in the early stages of AI adoption and what that means for the future. [16:14] Practical ways to reduce AI anxiety and learn at your own pace. [22:06] Why AI should support your thinking, not replace it. [25:55] Understanding AI bias and how representative data and diverse teams can help address it. [32:15] The biggest mistakes leaders make when implementing AI and how to avoid them. Nick Goad, BCG's global co-leader for retail merchandising, argues that retail's biggest problem isn't a lack of data, it's the gap between data and real customer understanding. He explains how AI and large language models are finally bridging that divide, making it possible to localize assortment, sharpen pricing, and accelerate product innovation at scale. For leaders wondering where to start, he makes the case for codifying the knowledge already in merchants' heads. What You'll Learn:Retailers have more data than ever, but AI finally gives them the tools to turn it into action merchants can actually trust. The biggest near-term opportunities are in assortment localization, smarter pricing, and AI-accelerated product innovation. The new data advantage for retailers isn't raw data — it's codifying the knowledge already in their merchants' heads.Learn More:BCG's Latest Thinking on the Retail Industry: https://on.bcg.com/4bYoe8xMerch AI by BCGX: https://on.bcg.com/3RxTfJFChapters(0:00) Has Retail Lost Its Personal Touch?(1:13) Serving Customers Before the Digital Age(2:33) The Internet's Impact on Retail(3:11) Does More Data Mean Better Customer Understanding?(4:12) Why Are Retailers Drowning in Complexity?(5:32) What Can AI Do to Help Retailers?(7:02) Will AI Create a New Data Overload?(7:54) What Are Retail Leaders Hopes and Fears for AI?(9:02) Will AI Get Products to the Shelf Faster?(9:57) Will AI Influence Product Design?(10:37) Can AI Create More Personalized Loyalty Programs?(11:34) How Will AI Shape the Shopping Experience?(12:02) Is Physical Retail Here to Stay?(13:36) Will AI Make All Our Shopping Decisions for Us?(14:23) Where Can Retailers Make the Biggest Changes?(15:00) Where Should Retailers Apply AI First?(15:48) What New Data Advantage Can AI Create?Meet the Expert:Nick Goad, BCG Managing Director & Senior Partner: https://on.bcg.com/4wuIlU0Listen to Other Episodes of The So What from BCG podcastPunch Cards, Frequent Flyers, and the Future of Loyalty: https://lnk.to/so-what-BCG-Crouch-Loyalty09YouTube | https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMJgyXjV5gMI9JV-GcF_D1Y6zyf1Eab_0&si=plXqe7-YNzbG56U8Apple | https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-so-what-from-bcg/id1591194141Spotify | https://open.spotify.com/show/2NSVR7qrAyZ4CaGsnknbBk?si=1d846c2af8784923Other platforms | https://lnk.to/so-what-general-show12Follow BCGhttps://www.bcg.com/LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/company/boston-consulting-groupThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podtrac - https://analytics.podtrac.com/privacy-policy-gdrp

Episode IntroductionThe conversation focused on the dramatic changes unfolding in the world economy and their far-reaching effects on personal wealth and global markets. One concept discussed was the historical Hamiltonian economic model, emphasizing the cycle of protecting domestic industries, building manufacturing strength, and eventually succumbing to the temptations of financialization. A key theme that emerged was the current strategic maneuvering of global superpowers—most notably China—moving away from US debt and aggressively acquiring physical gold, signaling a shift in trust and reserve currency status. The discussion explored how America's shift away from its manufacturing roots, driven by decades of financialization and globalization, has created vulnerabilities now being exploited on the world stage. Several points were raised, including the “impossible triangle” faced by policymakers, the deliberate weakening of the US dollar, and the implications of central banks' gold buying for individual investors. Ultimately, the episode challenges listeners to rethink conventional wisdom about currency, assets, and the evolving balance of global power.Sign up for my AI Masterclass: https://tombilyeu.com/ai-masterclass?utm_campaign=TBS-Livestream&utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=social Check us out wherever you get your podcasts:Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/1nARKz2vTIOb7gC9dusE4b?si=a8daffd2bf1f48fdApple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/tom-bilyeus-impact-theory/id1191775648Do you need my help STARTING a business? I am cheap so probably only 2 models I am seeing so comes down to do I need or want the enclosed one. Question from Alex W. from Florida Dear WLS: Hey y'all. If all of our hopes and dreams were to come true and we could get mail order machine guns to our doors, what (other than boatloads of fun) do you think the most valid use for civilian full auto is? I was thinking maybe a select fire/burst fire subgun for home defense? Belt feds on pigs? Alex W. If you were only able to own 2 Glocks, what would your suggestions be for gen and model? Also, what make and model of 2 Glock style pistols. Thanks guys. #stuckbehindenemylines WINNER Question from Travis from ILLINOIS Dear WLS this is Travis from not the people's republic of Illinois. Love the show you and all the content. Shawn over the past few shows you have mentioned your Kelby rifle. What do you like and not like. Would you do anything different. I personally don't know anyone who owns one and looking to purchase one for potential PRS matches. Thanks Travis Question from Anonymous Coward from Florida Dear WLS: Hey y'all. I was thinking, with the growing apparent popularity of “pdw” setups for pistols, I was wondering why no manufacturer seems to produce a factory firearm that fits that sort of form factor (other than sig selling factory 320's already in a raider chassis). The closest things I can think of currently would be the B&T TP9 or their USW. But I'm wondering why no one else is tapping into the whole oversized 9mm pistol with a brace/stock market trend. In this episode, today's conversation focuses on the deepening collision between Western values and radical ideologies, examining recent headline-grabbing events—such as a violent attack at a Berlin pride parade—and exploring their broader societal implications. A key theme that emerged was the tension arising from clashing value systems, particularly as mass migration and ideological divides challenge the fabric of Western nations. The discussion explored not just the menace of extremism, but also the influence of far-left political movements, examining policy proposals from groups like the DSA and their potential effects on democracy, culture, and the economy. Several points were raised, including the risks of narrative capture in an age of rapid information, the recurring patterns of history when values collide, the limitations of current U.S. military and economic strategies, and the urgent need for honest debate about immigration, national identity, and the West's future. This episode dives into controversial topics with unflinching honesty, aiming to spark critical thought about the challenges and responsibilities facing societies today.Sponsors:Quince: Free shipping and 365-day returns at https://quince.com/impactpodWhatnot: Download the Whatnot app today and get free shipping on your first order.ATT Business: Switch to AT&T Business at business.att.comEthos: Get a free quote at https://ethos.com/impactSurfshark: Go to https://surfshark.com/CODE or use code CODE at checkout to get 4 extra months of Surfshark! What do you do when someone you thought you could trust does something so out of character that you're caught completely off guard? At first you don't think too much of it, but then you start to notice there's actually a pattern – of control, manipulation, and coldness. It's those little manipulations where they deny something happened or downplay it that really start to chip away at your sense of reality, your confidence, and your sense of self – and before you know it, you don't even recognize yourself anymore. The sad truth is, manipulators are masters at making you doubt your own reality, and by the time you realize what's happening, you're already trapped in their web. And that's why on today's episode of Women of Impact, we are diving deep into how these dangerous people – like psychopaths and predators you expect would be SO obvious to spot – are actually the ones hiding in plain sight and waiting for their opportunity. Here to pull back the curtain on exactly how dangerous people operate right under our noses is cold case investigator Paul Holes. This guy spent years hunting down some of the most elusive predators out there, including the infamous Golden State Killer. And what he's sharing today is going to make you rethink everything you thought you knew about spotting danger. We go deep into: Signs to look for when dating or meeting someone new that could be giveaways that something is actually “off” about themWhy some of the most dangerous people are often the ones who seem the most “normal”How people like the Golden State Killer can hide in plain sight for DECADES, all while committing horrific crimesAnd how YOU can spot those subtle signs of manipulation and control that most people don't see until it's unfortunately too frikin' lateThe reality is guys, that psychopaths are often hiding behind the “normal” people you see every day – the barista making your coffee, your co-worker that everyone loves, or even your boyfriend that you've been with for MONTHS. But by the end of this episode, you'll know the giveaway signs that a predator is trying to trick you and blend into everyday life, and how YOU can protect yourself and the people you love from these predators, abusers, manipulators who just want to get power and control over you. In this powerful episode of “Relatable,” Allie Beth Stuckey sits down with father-son evangelists Cliffe and Stuart Knechtle for a raw conversation on bold gospel proclamation in a hostile culture. Cliffe shares his remarkable journey from preaching in rough Boston bars to facilitating decades of open-air dialogues on university campuses, while Stuart recounts growing up in the midst of it and leveraging social media to reach millions with pre-evangelism and gospel conversations. Together they address the dramatic cultural shifts they've witnessed — from increased emotional fragility and moral relativism to the devaluing of human life and growing hostility toward Christian truth. The discussion dives deep into handling doubt, the importance of intellectual honesty in faith, why politics must never overshadow Christ, and practical ways to engage skeptics with grace and truth. Cliffe and Stuart also explore why many Gen Zers are walking away from church and how believers can demolish doubt with evidence and compassion. A must-watch for anyone passionate about evangelism, apologetics, and raising the next generation with unshakable faith. Share the Arrows 2026 is on October 10 in Dallas, Texas!
