The host, who knows both men and calls them smart and well-intentioned, explicitly urges viewers not to pick a side and dismiss the other as stupid, but to find the one factual disagreement worth reasoning from. His own position leans hard toward innovation: drawing on Matt Ridley's The Rational Optimist, he argues that 80,000 years of human progress make "it all ends now" an irrational bet, that we've innovated our way out of every prior crisis, and that de-growth—especially any talk of reducing world population—would trigger economic collapse that causes far more suffering than the problem it aims to solve. He respects Steve Keen's economic mind but argues Keen has essentially "given up," wishing we'd listened to engineers 50 years ago rather than charting a path forward now. He reframes the climate fight around tradeoffs the doom narrative ignores: citing Bjørn Lomborg's "it's real but overstated, and the solutions can be worse than the disease" framing, the roughly 140,000-plus annual heat deaths that air conditioning could prevent, and Jordan Peterson's warning about sacrificing today's actual poor for tomorrow's hypothetical poor. The conversation ranges across the East-vs-West Germany innovation contrast, a Peter Diamandis-style geoengineering thought experiment, why "politics is downstream of culture," and the host's more contested claim that climate panic often masks a desire for control and resentment—before ending on a speculative, openly-unsupported musing about the psychology behind who pushes it. A wide-ranging argument for optimism, first-principles thinking, and refusing to let "we're doomed" become the whole story. The team breaks down Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's latest move to tame rising long-term bond rates—and why the bond market is likely to keep testing him. After Bessent doubled buybacks from $2B to $4B per round (which briefly knocked yields down before they rebounded past where they started), two off-the-record Treasury officials leaked to CNBC that the Treasury General Account—the government's roughly $1-trillion checking account at the Fed—could be tapped to buy bonds en masse. The host walks through why that's a bigger deal than expected: using cash to retire long-duration bonds without issuing new supply makes the debt "evaporate," and the market has, at least for now, believed the rumor enough to push the 30-year and 10-year yields down. But he's clear about the catch: the TGA isn't a magic war chest—every dollar in it was borrowed via prior auctions, so spending it down just defers the problem and eventually requires selling more debt, pressuring the curve again. He frames the backdrop honestly: $40 trillion in debt, ~123% debt-to-GDP, climbing interest costs, Japan (the largest buyer of US debt) in trouble, China dumping Treasuries while hoarding gold, and gold overtaking the dollar as the top central-bank reserve asset. His throughline is that there's no silver bullet, only tradeoffs, and the only real fix is growing the real economy—rising middle-class wages adjusted for inflation, GDP moving from ~1.2% toward 3–4%—rather than financial engineering. Absent that, he lays out the grim menu every over-indebted empire faces: austerity, default, or inflating the currency to shrink the debt (which quietly impoverishes everyone paid or saving in dollars), and warns that another Covid-scale inflation spike without real growth is how you get to "pitchforks." The conversation closes on a lengthy, contested tangent about immigration incentive structures, the Nordic model, and social trust—with the host explicitly noting the Nordic countries themselves say they aren't socialist. A dense, sobering economics breakdown. The team breaks down the escalating US-Canada trade war after Canada walked away from a deal that would have sharply lowered tariffs on several key Canadian industries. The host argues Canada is making a serious economic miscalculation—laying out the dependency math: roughly 78% of Canadian exports rely on US consumer markets, and exports make up about 33% of Canada's GDP, versus Canada representing only around 13% of US imports and a small slice of US GDP. In his read, that asymmetry means Canada has far more to lose, and pivoting toward China—geographically distant and, as he notes, a non-market economy—is a poor substitute. He digs into what actually broke the deal per PM Mark Carney: autos, French-language and cultural protections, and, most importantly, a US demand to restrict Canada's ability to sign independent trade deals with other countries (read: China), pointing to Canada's stated goal of a 50% export increase to China by 2030, Carney's January Beijing visit, and a flurry of mutual tariff cuts (including slashing Canada's 100% EV tariff to ~6%) as evidence of a rapidly warming relationship. But the host is pointedly two-sided: he says the US had understandable strategic reasons to push for guarantees, while blasting Trump's "51st state" rhetoric and bullying public posture as counterproductive—using it as a lesson he teaches entrepreneurs about always showing the other side how a deal is a win for them, and the human psychology of how people resist being forced into even things that serve their interests. He walks through the granular US demands (auto assembly, procurement, energy allocation, language laws) and their second-order effects, and closes on a contested hypothesis that Canada may be more ideologically aligned with China than the US. A dense, numbers-driven, deliberately even-handed breakdown of leverage, strategy, and a deal gone sideways.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Zum 15-jährigen Jubiläum von Stay Forever haben sich Gunnar und Chris ein besonderes Spiel ausgesucht. Also: jeder eines.

Protest is the ultimate in equal-opportunity political action. As Annie Leonard, former executive director of Greenpeace USA says, “Making change is like laying a stone path across the garden. Peaceful protest may be every 4th or 8th or 200th stone; it helps us get where we want to go but also we need a lot of other stones too.” Leonard explores the history of protests in her book “Protest: Respect It. Defend It. Use It.”  And while protest is the loudest and most visible tool, it's only one of many ways to take action. Through community building, civic engagement, elected office, corporate boardrooms, churches and nonprofit agencies, there are countless paths to exercising power and promoting positive change. In this episode we hear from three leaders working in three different arenas, all toward the same goal. First is Josh Robinson, a transformational executive with more than 20 years of experience leading finance, technology, and business strategy across organizations ranging from $50 million to $7 billion in revenue. Josh is known for building high-performing teams, creating cultures that attract top talent, and helping companies think big, start small, and scale fast. Joining him is Mike Nathan, a Navy veteran, entrepreneur, investor, and startup builder who's helped launch, advise, and invest in more than a dozen companies across industries. From Search & Rescue Swimmer to founder, board member, and operator, Mike believes that business is one of the most powerful vehicles for creating meaningful impact for people and communities. Together, Josh and Mike bring an incredible combination of operational excellence, entrepreneurial grit, and people-first leadership. I'm excited to dive into their journeys, what they've learned building companies and cultures, and where they see the future of work and leadership heading next. Key Takeaways: Not every high performer should become a manager. Companies need meaningful advancement paths for strong individual contributors instead of forcing them into leadership roles they may not want or be equipped for. Leadership is less about having every answer and more about building the right team. Great leaders trust subject-matter experts, ask better questions, and create the conditions for others to execute. Authenticity builds more trust than pretending to know everything. Employees respond better to leaders who admit what they do not know and work alongside the team to find the answer. Conviction can matter as much as competency. Skills may get someone through the interview process, but genuine belief in the company's mission determines whether they will remain committed when things get difficult. A founder's ability to delegate is a critical indicator of scalability. Founders who constantly say “I,” control every decision, and cannot step away will eventually become the bottleneck in their own business. Raising capital should serve a specific goal, not someone's ego. Companies should pursue funding when it accelerates product development, sales, expansion, or a planned exit, not because announcing a major round has become a status symbol. AI is creating the rise of the “Army of One.” Individuals and small teams can now use AI, outsourcing, and personal branding to produce the output and profitability once associated with much larger organizations. Take the “Army of One” seriously, but not literally. AI can dramatically increase individual productivity, but growing companies will still need talented people when complexity, scale, and human connection demand them. Replacing employees with AI is often the wrong strategy. The greater opportunity is to give employees AI tools, remove repetitive work, and redeploy people into more valuable roles that improve service and generate revenue. The professionals who thrive will combine expertise with AI fluency. Human judgment, technical knowledge, and relationship skills will remain valuable, but people who fail to learn how to apply AI within their field risk being left behind.     Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Leadership and Impact 01:43 Personal Leadership Journeys 05:19 The Role of Individual Contributors vs. Leaders 08:12 Evolving Beliefs About Leadership 09:48 Hiring Talent vs. Building Executable Teams 12:44 Evaluating Founders and Their Potential 14:43 Post-Mortem Analysis of Failed Startups 15:52 The Right Time to Raise Capital 17:52 The Army of One Myth and AI's Role 26:51 AI's Impact on Jobs and Company Culture 32:28 The Importance of Human Expertise in a Tech-Driven World 33:16 Hiring for Heart: The Key to Successful Interviews 35:21 Assessing Compatibility: The Role of Personality in Hiring 37:49 Radical Transparency in Leadership and Its Challenges 41:33 Risky Decisions: Career Moments That Changed Everything 45:06 Debunking Business Clichés: What Needs to Die 47:40 AI: Signal or Hype? This special breaking-news is an excerpt from an upcoming Catching Up to FI episode, recorded on 8/26/26. Barry reacts to Vanguard's newly announced agreement to acquire Altruist, the fast-growing technology and custody platform built for independent financial advisors. Barry also gives an important disclosure: he's an Altruist investor, so yes, he has a dog in this fight. From there, he explains why combining Vanguard's enormous scale with Altruist's technology could quickly reshape the custody business, put fresh pressure on Fidelity and Schwab, and potentially extend the famous "Vanguard Effect" into another corner of financial services. Bill calls it "disruptor squared." Barry sees an industry that never stands still. And if competition drives prices lower again, investors may ultimately be the ones cashing the biggest check. Bryan Murphy, CEO of Smartling, confronts a $40 billion industry stuck in the slow lane—the world of translation. Most companies still handle translations like it's 1999: manual, expensive, and painfully slow. Bryan saw AI as the game changer that could rewrite the rules, but integrating it wasn't a walk in the park. He shares how Smartling harnessed AI to not just cut costs and speed up translation but to finally boost quality close to human-level precision without losing control over brand voice or nuance. Yet, making this leap meant upheaval: reorganizing teams, hiring AI experts, and establishing ruthless R&D discipline to separate winning ideas from distractions. Bryan also shares: - Why a $40 billion translation industry was ripe for disruption - How AI helped Smartling move from faster and cheaper to dramatically better - What it took to bring AI into a traditional business without sacrificing quality or brand voice - Why hiring the right AI talent was critical to making the shift - How ruthless R&D discipline helps separate breakthrough ideas from distractions - Why every AI initiative needs a clear connection to customer outcomes Chapters 00:00 - Introduction to Bryan Murphy and Defining the Translation Challenge 02:30 - The Hidden $40B Translation Market and Its Untapped Potential 06:00 - Early AI in Translation: Faster and Cheaper, But Not Yet Better 09:20 - Human-in-the-Loop AI: Boosting Translator Productivity Tenfold 13:00 - Unlocking Market Expansion Through Improved SEO and Digital Footprint 15:00 - The Moment of Truth: Recognizing GPT's Impact and Rolling Out Rapid Innovation 18:00 - Overcoming Organizational Challenges: From Excitement to Structured Execution 22:00 - The Discipline of "Customer-First" in AI Development and Roadmapping 24:00 - Leadership Lessons: Listening Without Losing Vision Amidst Painful Change 26:00 - Winning Customer Trust: Betting On Proofs of Concept Against Skeptics 28:00 - Personal Insights: Favorite Leadership Books and the Role of Intellectual Curiosity 33:00 - Wrap-up and Invitation to Follow Smartling's AI-Empowered Evolution Try Smartling: smartling.com

But some meteorologists work in places most of us rarely consider—guiding ships across vast oceans, helping industries make critical weather decisions, and even reconstructing past weather events to answer important questions long after the skies have cleared. Today on Weather Geeks, we're joined by maritime meteorologist Craig Setzer. Throughout his career, Craig has helped bridge the worlds of weather, ocean navigation, and risk management, providing forecasts and expertise for operations that depend on understanding conditions far from land. We'll explore the unique challenges of forecasting weather at sea, how the cruise industry uses meteorological information to keep passengers and crews safe, and the fascinating field of forensic meteorology—where weather data, observations, and science are used to piece together what happened during past events.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Maritime Meteorology05:31 Differences Between Maritime and TV Forecasting08:32 Cruise Industry and Weather Disruptions10:27 Operational Decisions During Hurricanes12:38 Pressure and Responsibilities of a Maritime Meteorologist15:16 Legal Considerations in Maritime Operations16:42 Other Weather Hazards in Maritime Forecasting18:55 The Impact of Meteorology on Cruise Experiences20:51 The Value of Weather in Maritime Safety21:16 Break 121:17 Introduction to Forensic Meteorology22:05 Craig Setzer's Background and Expertise23:36 Understanding Forensic Meteorology25:09 The Role of Captains and Meteorologists26:40 Clients and Cases in Forensic Meteorology28:22 Challenges in Weather Data Analysis30:28 The Importance of Buoy Data32:12 Historical Data from Ships33:38 Break 233:38 Hurricane Forecasting and the Cone39:01 Communication in Meteorology40:21 Advice for Future Meteorologists ResourcesRoyal Caribbean Group - https://www.royalcaribbean.com/NOAA Buoy Data Center - https://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/Metropolitan State University of Denver - https://www.msudenver.edu/University of Oklahoma - https://www.ou.edu/ Guest linksLinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/craig-setzer-ccm-03095422aTwitter - https://twitter.com/craigsetzerSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In coffee we can often question the impact of our efforts. Over time though, small consistent steps in the right direction can not only carry you over many miles, it can transform you and those for whom you are working. What may seem like plodding work now, is the foundation for what will be built in the future.  Today we are talking with someone whose work has taken several turns over the years. All of which were in the direction of uplifting farmers with whatever means were at hand. Today the massive impact of those consistent actions has led to impact beyond measure.  We are talking with Ben Carlson of Long Miles Coffee. Ben Carlson is a coffee industry leader and social entrepreneur with 23 years of global experience, including 16 years on the ground in East Africa. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, Ben serves as the CEO, Chief Culture Creator, and Sales Director of Long Miles Coffee—an impact-driven organization dedicated to producing world-class specialty coffee while uplifting smallholder farming communities out of generational poverty. Ben's journey in East Africa began in 2010 following a quality survey of Burundi's coffee sector. Driven by a vision to challenge exploitative supply chains, he transitioned from coffee trading to hands-on production, founding Long Miles Coffee in 2013 alongside his wife, Kristy. What started with a single washing station serving 180 families in Bukeye, Burundi, has scaled into a multi-country operation employing over 130 team members and supporting more than 9,500 farming families across Burundi and Uganda. Under Ben's leadership, Long Miles has consistently set benchmarks for quality and sustainability, earning numerous Cup of Excellence awards and achieving Burundi's highest coffee sales per pound. His current work focuses on pioneering climate-resilient agriculture, including building Africa's first carbon-neutral, minimal-water coffee processing facility and developing a regenerative model farm on Mount Elgon in Western Kenya. Recognized as Imbibe Magazine's "Coffee Person of the Year," Ben is a frequent international speaker, event host, and competition judge on impact-driven business models and sustainable agriculture. He also serves as the regional distributor for Ecotact protective packaging in Uganda and Kenya. Ben lives in Kenya with his family, continuing his mission to reshape the future of African specialty coffee. Nick and Tyler sit down with Architect David Hornstein to talk about what has been lost as residential construction has become more specialized, more layered, and more expensive. Drawing from decades as a carpenter, builder, architect, and product designer, David makes the case that highly custom work can still be efficient if the people doing it understand the entire process. They get into the master builder mindset, the value of having experienced people on site, why communication gets diluted through layers of management, and how relentless attention to small efficiencies can dramatically change the cost of custom construction. David also shares how that same mindset eventually led him to create Dura Gutter. David Hornstein https://www.light-house-design.com/ https://www.duragutter.com/ Join the Modern Craftsman Community

AI can be an incredible tool for organizing your thoughts—but can it replace an experienced real estate attorney? Richard Crouch, a commercial real estate attorney with more than two decades of experience, explains why experience still matters when navigating complex real estate transactions. AI can help review information and suggest language, but it doesn't have the real-world experience of seeing deals go wrong, understanding the practical consequences of contract language, or recognizing the nuances that can create problems later. In commercial real estate, a provision that looks perfectly clear on paper can have very different consequences in practice. That's why having an experienced attorney who understands the business—not just the legal language—can make a major difference. For real estate investors and sponsors, the goal isn't to avoid technology. It's to know where technology can help—and where experience, judgment, and expertise are still essential. Want to learn how to leave a leadership role without burning bridges? I've learned the hard way that transitioning in ministry isn't just about the "next thing"- it's about how we honor the "now thing." In this episode, Amy and I sit down to get real about the messy, beautiful journey of mentorship and leadership development. We're sharing our own stories of growth, grief, and the lessons we've picked up along the way. If you're searching for a mentor or trying to figure out how to pour into the leaders rising up around you, we made this for you. We're walking through the practical, heart-level steps to honoring your past while stepping boldly into your future. I often think about how every community has its own unique sound. Learning to lead isn't about changing that sound to match yours; it's about learning to honor the harmony that was there before you arrived. I want to help you process the mixed emotions of transition so you can lead with a clear heart.
