Clare Balding visits the ancient and mysterious labyrinth on top of St. Catherine's Hill in Winchester. Leading the walk is Brian Draper, who runs soulful retreats in nature. Throughout this series of Ramblings Clare is exploring how walking affects our inner life. She is hiking with people of differing beliefs and none to discover how the simple act of being in the natural world can change how we feel. Today, she joins a retreat run by Brian Draper - you may recognise his voice from Thought For The Day on Radio 4 - who encourages the group to slow down and be a part of nature, and discusses the benefits this can have. Together they climb St. Catherine’s Hill to discover the meaning and purpose of labyrinths, a kind of spiritual maze-like path used for walking meditation. Katy and Morgan are travelling so we’re reposting a wonderful episode from November about a legend in Maine, where Katy went! So tune in for this hilarious and spooky time. It’s time Morgan and Katy addressed a truly fascinating and long dismissed element of paranormal activity: the weather. Namely, fog. Lifted from an episode of American Supernatural featured on the Weather Channel, Katy takes us through the legend of Catherine’s Hill, the story of a forlorn and possibly nefarious lady who haunts a coastal Maine road. And as a special treat, she reads a truly terrifying listener story. Not terrifying because of the spirit itself, but because of what might have happened if the spirit hadn’t intervened. So buckle yourself in for a ride through Black Woods road where you might encounter Catherine, or worse–FOG!

Most people assume the lore of vampires that originated in Europe, stayed in that area, but there was a time when America was embroiled in the middle of a vampire craze in New England. It was the 1800s and the dreaded consumption was wreaking havoc. Many families lost several of their members. One of those families was the Brown family. It was the death of one of their daughters that started the Legend of Mercy Brown. Were there really vampires in America and was Mercy one of them? Join us as we investigate the history of this craze and a young woman named Mercy Brown. The Moment in Oddity features the Legend of Catherine's Hill and This Day in History features the Charge of the Light Brigade.
