On this week's episode, I'm rejoined by the one and only Chris McKenna who, alongside writing partner Erik Sommers, cowrote the highest-grossing film of all time, domestically: Spider-Man: Brand New Day. He broke down the thought process that went into getting Peter Parker back together with his friends, the tricky negotiations between Marvel and Sony over who could use which characters and when, and posited some alternate futures about what the story could have looked like. Stopping Lyme at the Source: The Science Transforming Tick-Borne Disease Prevention link for CME credit coming soon! For nearly 30 years, Dr. Janakiram Seshu has pursued a bold vision: instead of relying solely on people to avoid infected ticks, could scientists interrupt Lyme disease in nature—before the bacteria ever have the chance to reach us? Now, that vision is showing extremely promising results. In this episode of Pediatrics Now, host and executive producer Holly Wayment, MSJ, talks with Dr. Seshu, a UT San Antonio researcher whose team has developed an oral vaccination strategy designed to target Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease, in the wildlife that serves as its natural reservoir. Using specially designed bait pellets, the approach aims to prevent ticks from acquiring the Lyme disease bacterium when they feed on wildlife—breaking the chain of transmission before those ticks can pass the infection to people or pets. Dr. Seshu shares the science behind the breakthrough, the results his team is seeing, and how a vision decades in the making could ultimately reshape the prevention of Lyme disease. He says they're already working on the potential beyond Lyme, offering a new way to target other tick-borne pathogens. On Monday, the Supreme Court denieda request from the Trump administration to allow the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to carry out parts of President Donald Trump's executive order placing new regulations on mail-in voting. Paranormal Conversations are random, off-the-cuff discussions on all things paranormal. On this 28th Paranormal Conversation, we are joined by entrepreneur, founder and CEO of Ghost City Tours and the host of the Ghost City Podcast, Tim Nealon. Tim has a passion and respect for history and a fascination with the paranormal and he has used this to realize his vision of a tour company with integrity and authenticity that hosts hundreds of thousands of guests every year in multiple cities across America. We discussed a variety of things including: Tim's haunted house where he has experienced frequent EVPs, disembodied voices, old-fashioned piano music, recurring shadow figures and a physical encounter with a candle. His property was part of a former plantation and lies along a route associated with Andrew Jackson's movement during the War of 1812 and he has found historical artifacts. We talk about ghost tourism and his company Ghost City Tours and the importance of historical research, accurate storytelling, and respect for the people and communities represented on its tours. It was important for us to differentiate his national company from another national company that seems to be ruining the industry and has been facing litigation.  Discussing what a ghost is takes a down a fascinating road with Tim's speculative theory that consciousness is a universal field received by the brain and that consciousness persists after death, possibly leading to some paranormal encounters. We discuss Jungian synchronicity, simulation theories, and the possibility that investigators' attention or intent contributes to hauntings.  For several years, Tim managed Old South Pittsburg Hospital and he shares some of the experiences people have had with EVPs, disembodied voices, and shadow figures. He also identified one area as having a more negative atmosphere, without labeling it demonic. Tim also shares his most intense experience, which happened at the hospital as well. It's pretty crazy! Kelly had a similar experience at the Exchange Hotel in Virginia with gunpowder smells, a copper taste, and severe tinnitus and Tim proposed that the brain may interpret unusual signals as specific sensory experiences, while acknowledging that the underlying process is not understood. You probably know Ke Huy Quan as the Academy Award-winning actor who played Waymond Wang in the 2022 film Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom when he was just 12 years old. But for a long stretch of his career, Ke wasn't acting at all. A lot of people talk about “finding purpose” after the military. Dana Corriveau (https://www.mantlechallenge.org/events) actually had to fight for it. Dana served eight years in the United States Air Force in Security Forces, deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, and came home with the kind of accelerated maturity that doesn't always fit neatly back into small-town life. Later, he builds a new career as a firefighter in Connecticut, but the deeper battle hits off the job: a divorce, a season of spiritual darkness, and the uncomfortable work of owning his choices instead of blaming everyone else. We talk through what veteran transition really feels like when the tribe is gone and your identity is in flux. The Thurber House in Columbus, Ohio is a charming home that is now a museum and meeting place for those with literary interests. There is a tragic and haunted history to the abode. The house sits on the outer border of the former Central Ohio Lunatic Asylum, which burned down in 1868, killing seven women in the fire. Jeweler Thomas Tracy Tress accidentally shot and killed himself in the house when he lived here. Writer, humorist and cartoonist James Thurber lived in the house for a time and he had a ghostly experience that he wrote about. Spirits do seem to knock about the place. It's been nearly 25 years since the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Virtually all of the leadership of al-Qaeda that planned and orchestrated the attacks have now been killed, but the group remains intact today. But if you talk to national security and terrorism experts, they'll offer wildly different assessments of how strong — and how much of a threat — it still poses. Graeme Wood is a journalist and staff writer at The Atlantic who covers the Middle East, terrorism, and political Islam. On Monday, August 31, The Wall Street Journal reported that Army Secretary Dan Driscoll had resigned amid protracted disagreements with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth; Driscoll's last workday was September 2. Several other military leaders have been fired or resigned under Hegseth, who has sought to reduce the size of military leadership.
