Crime doesn't always wear a mask — sometimes it hides behind policy, politics, and good intentions. In this episode of Lurking in the Fog, we step into the gray zone of bail reform with Ken W. Good, appellate attorney and leading voice in U.S. bail policy. What begins as a legal debate quickly turns into a brutal reality: repeat offenders released without accountability, victims left unprotected, and a system that quietly manufactures chaos. From federal courtrooms to domestic violence cases that end in murder, this conversation exposes how “simple release” policies erode deterrence, inflate failure-to-appear rates, and transform reform into de facto decriminalization. We dissect the data, the politics, the money, and the narratives — and ask the question few are willing to confront: What happens when accountability disappears? This is not theory. This is not ideology. This is the fog — where crime thrives, consequences vanish, and silence becomes deadly.

In A Dirty History of Photography: Chemistry, Fog, and Empire (U Chicago Press, 2026), Professor Michelle Henning presents an environmental history of chemical photography through the lens of its deep connections to empire and industry. Dependent on the extractive practices of fossil-fueled industrial capitalism, chemical photography's emulsions and films were highly sensitive to polluted atmospheres, and photographic companies had to work hard to control this sensitivity. Drawing on histories of empire, coal, and chemistry and from the archives of British photographic manufacturer Ilford Limited, Professor Henning exposes the ways photography shaped how we see and understand the atmosphere while leaving its toxic residues in the air, soil, and water. Structured as thirty-six short chapters and with over seventy illustrations, this innovative book begins in interwar London, follows the supply of Ilford products to photographers on the West African coast, and considers photography as a military technology linked to the development of chemical warfare. Combining close readings of photographs with discussions of low-light, tropical, and aerial photography, Professor Henning examines the extraction and development of photographic materials, their role in the current environmental crisis, and how they have shaped experiences of time and the environment. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Can you "turn off" a narcissist with one calm sentence? Tony unpacks the viral "narcissistic off switch" concept and discovers why tactics alone won't save you—but they might be exactly where real transformation begins. After stumbling upon behavioral expert Chase Hughes' framework for disarming manipulation using FOG (Fear, Obligation, Guilt), Tony initially resisted the idea. It felt too simple. But when he traced the concept back to its source, something shifted. The off switch isn't about changing them—it's about stopping the erosion of you. Through raw client stories and David Schnarch's differentiation work, Tony reveals why awareness doesn't land as insight to the emotionally immature—it lands as exposure. And exposure is a threat. What you'll learn: Recognize when FOG and CAVA (Control, Approval, Validation, Attention) are being used against you Understand why naming manipulation often backfires in deeply bonded relationships Apply Schnarch's four points of balance to stay grounded during accusations Stop defending a "reflected sense of self" and start building one that's truly yours Embrace outcome independence—saying your truth without needing their agreement Drawing from 20+ years as a marriage and family therapist specializing in emotionally immature dynamics, Tony bridges tactical awareness with the deeper work of differentiation. 00:00 Introduction and Social Media Plugs 01:11 The Lost Episode: Narcissistic Off Switch 05:27 Chase Hughes and the Concept of Prediction 16:11 Understanding Manipulation: FOG and KAVA 18:33 Real-Life Examples: Navigating Emotional Manipulation 28:46 Understanding Unhealthy Responses 29:24 The Power of Differentiated Response 30:18 Challenges in Relationships 30:42 Contrasting Views on Manipulation 32:09 Real-Life Examples of Manipulation 37:22 The Concept of Differentiation 43:35 Projection and Emotional Immaturity 46:50 The Four Points of Balance 50:53 Gridlock and Constructing Your Crucible 54:22 Final Thoughts on Emotional Autonomy Contact Tony at contact@tonyoverbay.com to learn more about his Emotional Architects men's group. The occupied islands of Okinawa, formerly the Ryukyu Kingdom, have been heavily militarized since the end of World War II. 70% of the US military bases in Japan are in Okinawa, which represents less that 1% of Japan's landmass. In preparation for a hot war on China, the US and it's client state, Japan, are building more bases, particularly on islands close to Taiwan. Clearing the FOG speaks with Japanese-American activist Rachel Clark about her recent tour of Okinawa where she visited the islands. Clark speaks about the history of the militarization of Japan, including forced changes to its pacifist Constitution, and the similarities between media propaganda in Japan and the US. First show of the second year on VBR. Thanks to everyone that has tuned in or downloaded over the last 12 months. Weekly shows are intense and come round so quickly. This week's show is a new music show for January. It's a real mixed bag, I'd only bought 16 new tracks and half of those were real chunky house tracks. You need about 25 for a two hour show so I needed to pad the first hour out but had no idea what to go with. The mix starts with three new tracks on the soulful deep vibe. I then cracked the vinyl out and played two of my favourite Soulfuric tunes. We stayed old skool and vinyl for the next four tracks before coming back up to date with Jay Vegas remake of another old classic from the mid 90's. One of my favourite tunes from back then. Remakes are the order of the day and we pick another with a beefed up version of The Fog's "Been A Long Time".Once we get past Yolanda Be Cool it's all new, up to the last track. We first pay a visit to Old London town and those lumpy bumpy UKG beats. The rest of the mix is the new house sound I'm hearing in the underground clubs. My fav is the Haritas track, absolute mayhem, love it.We finish off with another classic from the 00's - Shakedown - At Night.Unfortunately my computer crashed just as the last track was mixing in. It meant my show ended abruptly five minutes early and the recording stopped. I had to stitch it back together again.Next boat party for those of you in Sydney is March 6th, a Friday night cruise from 8pm to Midnight on the harbour. It is an experience being out on the water surrounded by the bright city lights. On January 3, the Trump administration authorized a large-scale military invasion in Venezuela that killed one hundred people. The US bombed infrastructure in and around Caracas, and in other states, and kidnapped President Nicolas Maduro and First Combatant (aka First Lady) Cilia Flores. Outright lies are being reported in the corporate media on a massive scale to justify crimes committed by the US military and to mislead the public. Clearing the FOG speaks with activist and policy analyst Leonardo Flores. Flores addresses many of the common myths and provides the facts you need to understand that President Maduro is still the President of Venezuela, that the US-backed far-right opposition led by Maria Corinna Machado has little power within Venezuela, that the Venezuelan government and the Bolivarian Revolution remain strong and united and that gains claimed by the Trump administration are exaggerated. He also discusses what people in the US are doing to mobilize in support of President Maduro and First Lady Flores. For more information, visit PopularResistance.org

Military Historian, Author, and Battlefield Guide Paul Reed join Sean to discuss a BBC documentary that he took part in, Meet The Ancestors Series 5, Episode 3: The Forgotten Battlefield. The documentary details a group of amateur archaeologists called The Diggers, who discovered a complex trench system over 200 fallen soldiers, in the Ieper (Ypres) and Boesinghe (now Boezinge). In an act of what Paul describes as "rescue archaeology" the diggers and historians-including Paul himself, race against time to uncover as much as they can before the area is completely covered by the building of an industrial estate. Paul also talks about what happened after the cameras stopped rolling. From the educational remit of British television in the early 2000's, to the emergence of amateur archaeology, and World War One remembrance and myths, this episode has it all.Raised Questions:-Did you know the BBC made a rival programme to Channel Four's Time Team?-Why weren't professional archaeologists interested in World War One battlefields back in the early 2000's?-Why wouldn't The Diggers be allowed to do their work today?-Why does wood survive in Flanders Field?-Why is it important to show the reality of war in documentaries?Chapters:0:06 Welcome to Review It Yourself1:14 Revisiting The Forgotten Battlefield2:55 The Evolution of BBC Documentaries7:31 The Role of 'The Diggers'9:19 Post-War Reconstruction Challenges10:48 Discoveries Beneath the Surface13:53 Amateurs vs. Professionals in Archaeology15:28 The Significance of Archaeological Finds21:02 Understanding the Reality of War23:28 The Human Cost of Conflict30:15 The Reality of Identification34:59 Forgotten Events of the Past38:54 The Fog of War40:47 Officer Casualties and Leadership45:44 Findings from the Battlefield Trench47:45 Unearthing History56:34 The Weight of Remembrance1:01:20 Reflections on Loss1:06:21 The Reality of War1:08:09 Commemoration vs. Reality1:16:56 Modern Discoveries1:23:05 The Role of DNA1:28:58 The Future of Historical Narratives1:33:57 Sharing Knowledge and PassionThe Programme on BBC iPlayer (UK Only): https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0074n0m/meet-the-ancestors-series-5-3-the-forgotten-battlefieldPaul's Podcast: Further Information can be found in Paul's podcast: The Old Front Line:-Battlefield Archaeology & Essex Farm Episode (3rd April 2020).-Forgotten Battlefield: The Reunion Episode (1st April 2023).The Old Front Line Website: https://oldfrontline.co.uk/Thanks for Listening!Find us here: X: @YourselfReviewInstagram: reviewityourselfpodcast2021 Hosted on Acast. The new book, "Killing Democracy: Western Imperialism's Legacy of Regime Change and Media Manipulation," is a timely account of the West's efforts to control countries around the world through soft power and, when necessary, military power, and the critical role the media plays in forming popular opinion to support these efforts and view them as legitimate. Clearing the FOG speaks with two of the five co-authors, Finian Cunningham and K J Noh. They discuss the West's efforts not only to overthrow governments but also to go after and, in some cases, annihilate the Left. They also speak about current efforts, including the very recent kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in a night raid. For more information, visit PopularResistance.org.

“What do you do when you stop winning?”In this episode, Sean and Matt drop the highlight reel and talk candidly about what it actually feels like when a once high-flying brand stalls, hits flat revenue, or even starts shrinking. They unpack why every business has a “natural size,” why top-line obsession is the laziest definition of winning, and how to think more clearly about margin compression, momentum, and your own financial security as a founder. From redefining success beyond horsepower-style revenue numbers, to product, channel, and positioning pivots, to doing the brutal “Fog of War” cuts instead of slow bleeding out, this is a tactical, psychologically honest roadmap for operators trying to diagnose stalled growth and decide whether to push for the next level or intentionally right-size the business and finally take money off the table.Chapters00:00 – Cold open: what it feels like when winning stops02:20 – Why this episode matters: growth stalls, failure, and the messy middle04:06 – Defining “winning”: growth vs profit, lifestyle, and the natural size of a business07:18 – Survival first: financial security, changing goals, and evolving definitions of success12:51 – Diagnosing stalled growth: macro forces, misalignment, and internal blind spots17:42 – Tactical vs strategic stalls: product, category limits, and being in the wrong vehicle23:48 – Playing by the rules of the game: CAC, channels, and market realities33:13 – Diversification as defense: why building on rented land is dangerous39:00 – When winning tactics stop working: SEO hits, waves crashing, and preparing for stall-outs44:00 – Operating paranoid: assuming stalls, diversifying early, and the tradeoff of leaving money on the table50:00 – Changing the business: adding new product lines, multiple business units, and hedging inside your own brand56:00 – Rented land warning: Facebook media, platform dependency, and why omnichannel is non-negotiablePowered ByFulfil.iohttps://bit.ly/3pAp2vuThe Only Cloud ERP Designed to Efficiently Scale 8 and 9-Figure Brands.Northbeamhttps://www.northbeam.io/Richpanelhttps://www.richpanel.com/?utm_source=9O&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=ytdescSarashttps://bit.ly/9OP-YtdescRivohttps://www.rivo.io/operatorsSubscribeSubscribe to The Marketing Operators Podcast:https://www.youtube.com/@MarketingOperatorsSubscribe to The Finance Operators:https://www.youtube.com/@FinanceOperatorsFOPS — Sign up to the 9 Operators newsletter:https://9operators.com/

The Enigmatic Fog: A Tale of Mystery and SuspenseIn the heart of a fog-laden island, a chilling tale unfolds. As the mist rolls in from the sea, obscuring the lights of the mainland, a sense of foreboding grips the inhabitants. This is not just any fog; it's a harbinger of secrets long buried and fears that refuse to die.The Fog's Arrival: The story begins with the fog enveloping the island, creating an eerie atmosphere. Our protagonist, Arthur, is consumed by a sense of dread, convinced that death is imminent. His fears are not unfounded, as the fog seems to bring with it the ghost of his past—his wife Valerie, who drowned under mysterious circumstances.A Web of Intrigue: As the night progresses, Arthur's paranoia intensifies. He confides in his closest friend, Vincent, about his belief that Valerie has returned from the dead. The island becomes a stage for a psychological drama, where trust is a rare commodity, and every shadow hides a potential threat. The Unraveling: The tension reaches its peak when Arthur's suspicions about Vincent's loyalty come to light. Accusations fly, and the line between reality and imagination blurs. The fog, a constant presence, seems to mock their attempts to uncover the truth. In this tale of suspense, the fog is more than just a weather phenomenon; it's a metaphor for the uncertainty and fear that cloud our judgment. As the story concludes, the fog lifts, but the mysteries it brought remain unsolved, leaving readers to ponder the true nature of the events on the island.Subscribe Now: Stay tuned for more thrilling tales and unravel the mysteries that lie beneath the surface. Subscribe now to never miss an episode.Atmospheric Setting: The fog serves as a central element, creating an eerie and suspenseful atmosphere that sets the tone for the unfolding mystery.Psychological Tension: The story explores themes of paranoia and fear, as Arthur grapples with the belief that his deceased wife has returned to haunt him.Trust and Betrayal: The narrative delves into the complexities of trust, with Arthur questioning the loyalty of his closest friend, Vincent.Unresolved Mysteries: The fog symbolizes the uncertainty and unresolved questions that linger throughout the story, leaving readers in suspense.Character Dynamics: The interactions between Arthur, Vincent, and other characters reveal underlying tensions and hidden motives.Symbolism of the Fog: Beyond its physical presence, the fog represents the characters' internal struggles and the blurred line between reality and imagination.Emotional Depth: The story captures the emotional turmoil of the characters, particularly Arthur's fear and desperation.Narrative Structure: The plot unfolds in a way that keeps readers engaged, with twists and turns that heighten the suspense.Themes of Isolation: The island setting emphasizes the characters' isolation, both physically and emotionally, as they confront their fears.Impactful Dialogue: The dialogue between characters is rich with subtext, revealing their true feelings and intentions.

Clearing the FOG with co-hosts Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a country in central Africa the size of Western Europe and rich in arable land and minerals, including those critical to the military industrial complex, such as cobalt and coltan. Since the CIA-backed assassination of Patrice Lumumba in 1961, the DRC has been ruled by puppets who answer to the United States and its allies. 2025 has been a devastating year for the DRC. Clearing the FOG speaks with Maurice Carney, the executive director of Friends of the Congo, about the occupation by Rwandan forces, mass displacement of millions of people, and the recent 'peace agreements' that rob the DRC of its riches and sovereignty. He discusses this in the context of Kwame Nkrumah's work, "Neo-colonialism: The last stage of imperialism." For more information, visit PopularResistance.org.
In this episode, Adam and Tom dive deep into the fogginess that entrepreneurs experience when they lose clarity in their businesses. They explore how to clear that fog not with Benadryl, but with truth, intention, and aligned action. The conversation is a powerful reflection on the importance of letting go of excuses, embracing reality, and fully stepping into who you are right now, rather than waiting for the “perfect moment.”

Today's conversation is about second acts that arrive not quietly—but boldly. Kim Gottlieb-Walker published her debut novel at age 78 after a 50-year career as a photographer. She also leads the Vintage Writers, a lively weekly Zoom group of women authors over 70. Joining her is Roselyn Teukolsky, a former math and computer science educator who retired and now writes fiction. This conversation explores creative courage, identity shifts, the power of starting something new – and the value of community. Kim Gottlieb-Walker and Roselyn Teukolsky join us from California. _________________________ Planning for retirement? Check out our recommended Best Books for Retirement _________________________ Bios Kim Gottlieb-Walker's career as a photographer covered a wide range of subjects, from classic rock and roll, reggae, and politics in the ‘60s and ‘70s to major motion pictures and television shows. Now in her late 70s, she has reinvented herself as a novelist. While still at UCLA (where she received a BA in Motion Picture production) and shortly thereafter, she shot for underground LA newspapers and magazines including Crawdaddy, the Staff, and Music World. She also shot the stills for John Carpenter's Halloween, The Fog, Christine and Escape from New York and worked at Paramount Pictures for nine years as the production photographer for Cheers, and five years for Family Ties. For three decades she was an elected representative for still photographers on the National Executive Board of IATSE Local 600, the International Cinematographers Guild. Her coffee-table photo books Bob Marley and the Golden Age of Reggae and On Set with John Carpenter were published by Titan Press (UK) distributed by Random House (USA) and both are now in multiple printing. They have editions in Japanese, Russian and French. She's had gallery shows in London, Los Angeles and New York. Her novels are Lenswoman in Love – a novel of the 1960s & ‘70s (her debut) and the not-yet published historical novel Caterina by Moonlight, about a girl growing up in renaissance Florence in the late 15th century. Her short story “Summer of Love – 1967” appears in the multi-award-winning anthology Feisty Deeds. Former math and computer science teacher, Roselyn Teukolsky, is the author of A Reluctant Spy, an unconventional spy thriller, and The Fourth Woman, a cautionary tale about online dating. Teukolsky has long been intrigued by the dilemmas faced by smart women in male-dominated settings. Working as a computer science teacher has given her the familiarity to create an authentic female protagonist, a brilliant computer scientist, who, in the latest novel, must ward off a ransomware attack and an online-dating predator. Teukolsky has a B.Sc. in Math and Chemistry from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, and an M.S. in Math Education from Cornell. She is the author of the Barron's review book for AP Computer Science, which is currently in its 12th edition. Roselyn's favorite pastime is tournament bridge. She wrote How to Play Bridge with Your Spouse … and Survive (Master Point Press) in 2002. She lives in Pasadena, CA, with her husband, Saul Teukolsky. ________________________ Have a Question You’d Like Answered on the Podcast? And it keeps your brain alive. There’s so much you have to learn with the learning curve of writing a book that it keeps your brain cells going. It stimulates them. I think there are many people out there who, after having had very active careers that are now retired and are feeling at lost ends. Every person has met interesting people during their lives, has had things happen to them, have had tragedies, have had happiness. Everybody has experiences in them that they might want to communicate. And writing, even though it seems like a very solitary occupation, it gives you a chance to put all of your life experience out into the world and to then connect with other people, other writers, to get the support that you need and to learn all of the different aspects of it. So it’s a very satisfying way to spend your retirement. Oh, well, it’s an amazing group of women. They’re all over 70. They’ve all reinvented themselves as writers. Some were writers beforehand, but most have reinvented themselves. And they cover all different kinds of writing of every genre. There’s self-help, there’s romance, there’s mystery, there’s historical fiction, and they’re all very talented, alert, wonderful women. And we meet every Tuesday on Zoom and commiserate and celebrate and give advice. And it has been the most wonderful support group. So we’re not isolated in retirement. We have interactions with people who have similar goals and similar challenges. It’s a tremendous support group.” – Kim Gottlieb-Walker On Age as an Asset ” It is never too late to reinvent yourself. It’s totally within your reach. You don’t have to depend on anyone else. All you have to do is sit down and let your ideas flow. And I wouldn’t worry about ageism because now that we’re in an age where you can self-publish, it doesn’t matter how old you are. And the fact that we have had such rich lives and so many experiences informs the writing and gives the writing depth and gives it reality because it’s based on our real experiences. No matter what you’re writing, you’re bringing your life experiences into it, which is incredibly valuable. So don’t worry about ageism. Don’t worry about the publisher. Just get it out on paper. Do it yourself.” – Kim Gottlieb-Walker On Starting to Write “A lot of my friends have said to me, Oh, they would love to write a book. They would love to write a book. They’re going to write a book. But the point is, if you don’t sit down every day at the same time, backside in the desk, it doesn’t happen. It just doesn’t. Even if you sit and do nothing. I would ask, what are you going to do in the next 10 years? And I say, I don’t know what I’m going to do. And I say, Well, why not write in the next 10 years?” – Roselyn Teukolsky
It's back! The mysterious fog is back for the second time in 2025. What would otherwise be natural atmospheric conditions of temperatures and moisture in the winter, like the natural Tule fog of California, has been transformed into a sinister conspiracy to do what nobody is quite sure exactly. Sure, there were military experiments using aerosols in California going back decades. But that's a lot different than fog with a strange smell. Perhaps it could be the fact that Los Angeles is the smoggiest and most polluted city in the United States consistently. In fact, it's actually one of the most polluted in the world. Several California cities from San Diego to Sacramento are actually on the list of most polluted in the United States. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. What starts as a perfectly normal call to a company president about a “huge client meeting” quickly takes a bizarre turn. A nervous employee claims he’s been tasked with explaining the company’s “performance”… but his definition is very different than the CEO’s. Fog machines, singing, and an unexpected request push this conversation from professional to painfully awkward in seconds.

As usual in the final episode of the year, we hand out three awards for what we think are some of the finest pieces of information systems scholarship produced this year. Except that this time, we are live at the International Conference on Information Systems in Nashville, Tennessee, in a room packed with our listeners. While this means the quality of the audio of our recording is not so great, the quality of the papers we honor this year is. And with a room full of laughter celebrating great information systems scholarship, we end the year on a high note. Congratulations to Stefan, Christoph, and Jan for winning the Trailblazing Research Award, John and Prasanna for winning the Elegant Scholarship Award, and Yanzhen, Huaxia and Andrew for winning the Innovative Method Award 2025. On November 30, six million Hondurans voted in their presidential election. One week later, the outcome of the election has not yet been announced due to credible allegations of fraud and illegal interference by the Trump administration, which includes threats of ending remittances from the United States that account for 25% of Hondura's GDP. Clearing the FOG speaks with Camila Escalante of Press TV and a founder of Kawsachun News who has covered Latin America for nearly ten years. Escalante provides background to the current political crisis and explains what is known so far about the election. She describes similarities to the 2019 coup in Bolivia.
