Clearing the FOG with co-hosts Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese
The situation with respect to the climate crisis is developing rapidly. Each new study seems to bring worse news. In addition, the media is rife with climate denial and misinformation. To help us understand what is happening on this planet, Clearing the FOG speaks with environmental journalist Robert Hunziker. Hunziker follows climate studies published in scientific journals and translates them into a language the average person can understand. He reports that top scientists are saying there has been a fundamental shift in the climate. Rainforests and tundras are now spewing carbon instead of sequestering it, and the oceans have reached their capacity for storing the planet's heat. Cascading weather events are making areas of the world uninhabitable. For More information, visit PopularResistance.org.

Cooper and Nolan are heading back out to sea for another season when they cover the winner of this year's audience poll - John Carpenter's THE FOG! This cult classic was criminally underrated at the time of its release despite featuring a who's who cast of horror veterans, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Adrienne Barbeau, and Tom Atkins (but somehow NOT his trademark moustache). Could a slow build, various plot holes, and lack of backstory for the main characters explain why critics were turned off by this one? The guys make arguments for all three while also debating ghost motivation, whether or not the townsfolk deserved their fate, and - once again - if there's such a thing as an 80s perv.Ā You might not be able to see it, but there's plenty more out there to discover; this SEASON PREMIERE episode (featuring a beer from the Bickford Brewing Co.) is one fog you won't mind wading through!

Charles shares his early experiences making mokuhanga, his teaching methods, and how his understanding of the medium developed through a Western American perspective. More info can be found, here.Ā Mokuhanga (ęØēē») - is a Japanese word meaning "wood" and "print." Traditionally, it refers to a relief printing method using woodblocks, water, natural handmade papers, and water-based pigments. With the rise of theĀ sÅsaku hanga (creative print) movement in the early to mid 20th century, mokuhanga expanded to include works made with Western oil pigments as well. Today, mokuhanga can be difficult to define, as many artists experiment with new approaches while others remain dedicated to traditional water-based methods. This balance between innovation and tradition shows that mokuhanga is limitless, continually evolving while still grounded in its past. sÅsaku-hangaĀ - or creative prints, is a style of printmaking which is predominantly, although not exclusively, prints made by one person. It started in the early twentieth century in Japan, in the same period as the shin-hanga movement. The artist designs, carves, and prints their own works. The designs, especially in the early days, may seem rudimentary but the creation of self-made prints was a breakthrough for printmakers moving away from where only a select group of carvers, printers and publishers created woodblock prints.Ā Stephen HazelĀ (1934-20120 - was a painter and printmaker based in the Pacific Northwest. Ā floating kentÅĀ - is like the traditional kentÅ registration technique but is carved on an "L" shaped piece of wood, and not onto the wood block.Ā monotype print - is a unique print created from an image painted or drawn on a smooth surface, such as glass or metal, and then transferred to paper. Unlike most printmaking methods, where multiple copies of the same image can be produced, a monotype typically has a single, one-of-a-kind image. It's called a "mono" type because it is not part of an edition like traditional prints (e.g., lithographs, etchings), where you can make multiple copies.Ā Mike LyonĀ - Ā is an American artist. On August 17, in the Bolivian presidential elections, the leftwing candidates lost for the first time in twenty years. Some are calling this a continuation of the US-backed coup there. Just days before the election, the Trump administration announced that it was sending naval destroyers and 4,000 troops to Latin America that could be used in 'targeted strikes' against Venezuela. Clearing the FOG speaks with William Camacaro, a senior analyst for the Council on Hemospheric Affairs and a co-founder of the Venezuela Solidarity Network, about divisions within the left in Bolivia that led to their current demise and how Venezuela is mobilizing millions of civilians to defend their sovereignty against US aggression. This past week marked the 80th anniversary of the US bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Clearing the FOG speaks with Gerry Condon, a past president of Veterans for Peace and a lifelong GI resister, about the myths of the US atomic bombing of Japan and the costs of nuclear weapons, including the environmental contamination from the nuclear chain and testing. Condon warns that the risk of nuclear war is higher than ever. He also speaks about resistance to nuclear weapons and his current work on the anti-nuclear boat, The Golden Rule. In this episode, host Dr. Michele Matarazzo interviews Dr. Nicolaas Bohnen about his team's recent study using FEOBV PET to investigate cholinergic deficits in Parkinson's disease patients with dopa-unresponsive freezing of gait (FOG). The results reveal a distinct pattern of cortical cholinergic denervation that may underlie this challenging and poorly treatable symptom. Dr. Bohnen discusses the implications for subtyping FOG, the role of cholinergic systems in higher-order motor control, and the potential for cholinergic-targeted therapies. Read the article.

This week's guest is Andres Mendoza Pena, Partner at Kearney.Ā Andres is here to discuss Kearney and CSCMP's annual State of Logistics report, aptly titled "Navigating Through the Fog." This title reflects the high uncertainty in the macro context impacting supply chain executives, like driving through dense fog.Ā In our conversation, we discuss the "fragile optimism" in the economy and the "certainty of uncertainty" that supply chain executives need to embrace.Ā Andres also talks about the shifting dynamics in different transportation markets to include the reduction in size of the FTL market, the expansion of dedicated/private, and the LTL segment's strong pricing discipline and high barriers to entry, leading to stable rates.Ā Finally, we talk about the future growth and adoption of autonomous trucking in the middle mile.Ā

The Lancet, a renowned medical journal, recently published a groundbreaking report on the number of people who die each year as a result of economic sanctions primarily imposed by the United States. US economic wars have killed more than 560,000 people each year for the past ten years, over half of those killed are children five years of age and younger. This number is higher than the number of people who die in military conflicts. Clearing the FOG speaks with Sara Flounders, a co-founder of the Sanctions Kill campaign, about what sanctions are, how they kill, and why the United States wages economic warfare. In this episode, Dan Czech, Vice President of Insights at KLAS, and my colleague Mark Ewrich, Chief Strategy Officer at Health Launchpad, and I discuss a Ā āMust-Readā study, āNavigating the Uncertainty of Federal Policy 2025.āDan and his team at KLAS surveyed almost 170 healthcare organizations to understand how they're responding to recent federal policy changes and budget uncertainties. In this week's episode, you will learn how healthcare organizations are navigating through shifting federal policies without clear direction. The study reveals that 90% of organizations feel they lack the clarity needed to act decisively, and 85% have developed multiple contingency plans to respond to policy changes.Dan, Mark, I talked through the five key themes from this study. They have significant implications for healthcare technology vendors. Most surprisingly, despite all the uncertainty, IT budgets aren't being frozen - they're being redirected toward specific priorities like AI, automation, and cybersecurity. Organizations are looking for solutions that can help them reduce workforce costs while maintaining the quality of care.Mark provides insightful commentary throughout our discussion on how healthcare technology companies should position themselves in this environment - focusing on de-risking solutions, demonstrating clear ROI, and aligning with the specific areas where organizations are still willing to invest. This study is essential reading for anyone selling into healthcare right now, as it provides a roadmap for understanding where opportunities still exist despite the challenging environment.Key Topics Covered:(00:00:00) IntroductionĀ (00:02:00) Contingency Planning(00:05:00) Theme 1: Planning Through the Fog(00:07:00) Theme 2: Policy Shifts Drive Hard Choices(00:11:00) Theme 3: IT Budgets Redirected, Not Frozen(00:15:00) Theme 4: AI as the Bright Spot(00:19:00) Theme 5: Value-Based Care Momentum(00:24:00) Theme 6: Small Organizations at Greater Risk(00:26:00) Closing Thoughts and TakeawaysKLAS Report: Government and Regulatory Impact on Healthcare Delivery Organizations 2025Want to learn more about planning for changing regulations? Why We Forget Things...AKA Brain FogMedicationsĀ - Drugs known to impact memory include (anxiety meds like Xanax and Valium, statins (used to control cholesterol), anti-seizure meds, beta blockers, antidepressants, opioids and a certain class of sleeping pills.Depression or anxietyĀ - When you're depressed, your brain is not working at 100%. It's not paying attention to things as well as it usually does, and the memory areas are not doing what they usually do.DietĀ -Ā ResearchĀ links ultraprocessed foods with cognitive decline and an increased risk of dementia.SleepĀ - Not getting enough sleep can make it harder to concentrate, learn new things and create new memories, according to theĀ National Institutes of Health.Trouble hearingĀ - NewĀ researchĀ suggests a connection between hearing loss and brain health, but hearing aids can help. The study links hearing aids with a 19% lower risk of long-term cognitive decline.MultitaskingĀ - Being distracted affects your ability to focus and remember things, and oneĀ studyĀ finds that multitaskers often have trouble recalling information. And they were young people.Restuarant Red FlagsIt's dirtyThe place is emptyĀ - If it's a Monday night, this isn't concerning, but if the dining room is empty during peak hours on a weekend...There's no management presenceĀ - Managers are visible in the dining room, greeting customers, talking to tables and helping servers when needed, but if you can't tell who's in charge, it might be because no one is.It's overloaded with social media influencersĀ - Sure, they can help get people in the door, but they might be getting special treatment and freebies to promote a restaurant.Ā The staff argues with youĀ - Mistakes will be made, but staff members should own it and try to make it up to you when that happens. It doesn't matter how good the food is, if the staff argues with you, it ruins the experience.Servers don't know the menuĀ - It shows poor training and āa lack of pride in the product.āYou're being upsold aggressivelyĀ - When it feels like a script or they're harassing you, it's a sign the restaurant is struggling and doesn't care about hospitality as much as sales.New Cheating EmojisAccording to private investigatorĀ Paul JonesĀ from ARF Private Investigators, there are some random, innocent-looking emojis that aren't really so innocent. Jones says that if you find your partner texting the croissant or padlock emojis, they're probably cheating on you. āOn the surface, it might look innocent, but there's usually a deeper meaning,ā Jones explained. āWe've had people using a croissant emoji as a way of saying āmeet me for breakfast,' or the letter emoji as a subtle ātext me when you're free.'āSecond Date UpdateDean and ArielĀ met on Hinge, and after a fun back-and-forth over messaging, they decided to meet in person. Julian Assange, a founder of Wikileaks, endured nearly 15 years of persecution for daring to provide an information platform that opened access to leaked documents exposing the rich and powerful. One year after Assange's release from Belmarsh Prison, his brother, Gabriel Shipton, launched The Information Rights Project to share the lessons he and his family learned as they mounted a global movement in defense of Assange. Clearing the FOG speaks with Shipton about what Assange endured, why information access is a critical right, and what people around the world can do to protect this right as attacks on those who speak out and report the truth grow. The Celebration Celebration: A Tour Through the Tours of Madonna!
Grab your popcorn (young Madonna's favorite food) because this week we're talking about Madonna's blink-and-you'll-miss-it film appearances. From a bar crooner in Vision Quest to a fencing instructor with attitude in Die Another Day, we're breaking down six roles where the Queen of Pop pops in, makes an impression, and vanishes just as quickly. We'll talk her tightrope walker in Shadows and Fog, the telegram-singing in Blue in the Face, camp witchery in Four Rooms, and sex-positivity in Girl 6.Are these forgettable cameos, or tiny gems that show off Madge's knack for stealing a scene? Either way, we're watching them all so you don't have to (but maybe you should).Plus: which cameo deserves a full spin-off? Which one made us cringe? And what does it say about Madonna's relationship to Hollywood that so many of her roles are... cameos? Here are links to those performances in case you want to follow along!Vision Quest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akUVYzA8G20Shadows and Foghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjXyTPyy60IBlue in the Face https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJ99leUQjgA&list=RDvJ99leUQjgA&start_radio=1Four Rooms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYXZay3hQhMGirl 6https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmYQimfiCpkDie Another Day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjJE9f3fadwEmail us: TheCelebrationCelebration@gmail.comFollow us on Instagram: @TheCelebrationCelebrationPick up a copy of Eric's book: The Dancerhttps://a.co/d/0gAi3bePick up a copy of John's book: Baked! On July 17, as The Hague Group, a coalition of nations committed to diplomatic and legal actions to end the genocide in Palestine, held an emergency summit in Bogota, Colombia, civil society groups also met to launch the Friends of The Hague Group (FoTHG). The FoTHG was convened by Palestinian organizations and joined by major international movements to support and expand The Hague Group, but also to challenge it to place Palestinian demands at the forefront and to take strong actions. Clearing the FOG speaks with Jacqueline Luqman of the Black Alliance for Peace, a member of the FoTHG, about the launch, what US activists can learn from collaborating with other social movements, and why it is a critical time to organize new multilateral anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist structures. The United States is a failing country. Political leaders at all levels have failed to effectively solve the many crises we face such as the climate crisis, economic insecurity and growing inequality, and the need for affordable housing, education, and health care, and more. Action at the local level, where people have the most control, offers a pathway forward.
