Text and Be HeardWhat if quitting your first addiction doesn't free you—but quitting your last escape does? We sit down with Al, a dual-addict in long-term recovery  to trace the surprising path from drugs to gambling to genuine peace. His story reveals a pattern many of us know too well: remove one behavior and the restlessness finds a new outlet. The fog finally lifts when you stop negotiating with the next rush and start building a life you don't want to lose.We dig into the practical tools that make that shift real. Al shares why Step Three became his pivot from control to trust, and how “living the steps” beats treating them like a checklist. We talk anger as a message rather than a flaw, how emotional literacy outperforms willpower, and why you can't outthink pain but you can outgrow it. For those navigating dual recovery, Al explains the power of multiple fellowships—how GA and NA each deliver language and community that the other can't. The result is a broader toolkit, clearer mirrors, and more honest accountability. This conversation also celebrates the rewards that keep recovery sticky. Al swapped betting slips for scuba in the Galapagos, night dives that feel like meditation, and the quiet thrill of antiquing and launching an auction company. We explore natural dopamine through purpose, connection, and adventure, alongside the simple math that keeps him steady: consequences outweigh any fleeting high. If you're seeking a path from white-knuckling to a life that feels wide open, this story offers both hope and a roadmap. If this resonated, follow the show, share it with someone who needs a lift, and leave a review with your biggest takeaway—we read every one.Support the showRecovery is Beautiful. Another rough passage of scripture that describes God's wrath as he judges His people for their actions. Chad digs into this and the similarities to the language from Exodus. Chad encourages to meditate on verse 2: "in wrath, remember mercy". And God has remembered, sending His beloved Son to earth to live and die in our place, rise again and break the cold chains of bondage that bind us all. Rebekah Caggegi sings "Maranatha!" and we look forward to the great day of the Lord when He, the great Judge makes everything forever right.  Show Notes: Support 1517 Podcast Network 1517 Podcasts 1517 on Youtube 1517 Podcast Network on Apple Podcasts 1517 Events Schedule 1517 Academy - Free Theological Education What's New from 1517: Coming Home for Christmas: 1517 Advent Devotional Face to Face: A Novel of the Reformation by Amy Mantravadi Untamed Prayers: 365 Daily Devotions on Christ in the Book of Psalms by Chad Bird Remembering Your Baptism: A 40-Day Devotional by Kathryn Morales Sinner Saint by Luke Kjolhaug More from the hosts: Chad Bird Lyrics for Maranatha! Even in the midst of hatred, violence and negativity, we can focus our attention on what lifts us up and how we might lift up others. I reference Hafiz' poem about Joy, particularly the line that says “we were created to smile, to love, to be lifted up and lift others up”. May we honor what we were created for - let yourself be lifted up and enjoy lifting up those around you. Let the kindness, thoughtfulness, and gratitude naturally flow with ease. We're not not going to let Wayne talk about his alma mater because, well, it IS the biggest upset of the college football season. Cookie had a front-row seat on the sidelines of the Rose Bowl this past Saturday when UCLA did the thing, so Hartzell wanted to ask about how it all went down. How did Nico turn from the pumpkin into the prince? And how did Jerry Neuheisel draw all that wizardry up with just four days prep before Penn State came to town? Wayne has all the answers. You know who else has answers is our man Phil Steele who drop by for a solid 30+ minutes of week 7 game discussion. So many good ones on the card this week, you already know the guys are asking Phil about every game in the top-25. And finally, has Wayne hit send on the golf balls he owes Hartzell? You don't want the juice running on a dozen golf balls, best get that shipped out with the quickness.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The people's eyes are opening, the fog has lifted, and the gaze is on the guilty. Jimmy's singing like a bird in a trap. Look at the patterns that line up perfectly with electoral cycles. The truth is never flattering. Moves are made in the Mangione case. Just another chance to jab at the Trump admin. They coordinated a media blitz against DJT. The big DA loves to Bragg. Why is his office allowed to spin? The Grand Jury has expired. They say it's not a big surprise. There were lots of promises to sue Trump that were made from mostly women. Hochul, Harris, Clinton, James, Reed, and others seem to have it in for the Donald. Political motivation wins over justified legal grounds. Details on the Letitia Act. No lying on mortgages. Calling out the lefties. Shifty is involved in the fraud too. Public service should include public trust. Did you intend to sign that document? Our country is approaching a very difficult stretch. Who was it that said, nothing worth doing is ever easy? Why Chuck Schumer is nervous. Don't kill the VAXXX messenger. Dominion software was trained in Venezuela. Let's look carefully at the Kirk assassination. The truth doesn't have to make sense, fiction does. Let us all be kinder to each other and those around us. And don't try to make sense of what happens in October.

The Cross: God's Love Lifted High The Homily reflects on the central place of the cross in Christian life, . . . . . . often present yet overlooked or misunderstood. From the liturgy to the crucifixes in our homes, the cross continually marks our faith. On the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, we are reminded not only of its burden but of its glory and victory. Drawing from Scripture, the Homily recalls Moses lifting the bronze serpent to bring healing and connects this to Christ lifted on the cross . . . not to erase suffering but to transform it. Greatest Sign of God's Love Through the cross, Jesus takes upon himself our pain, weakness, and failure, making them the very means of salvation. The cross thus becomes not only a symbol of suffering but the greatest sign of God's love, drawing our hearts, guiding our path, and opening the gates of heaven. The Church calls us not just to carry the cross as a weight, but to lift it high in faith, joy, and triumph, for by it we are redeemed. Listen to the Meditation Media.
