Five words. Lifted from a letter. Turned into a wall between your faith and your vote. Most Christians can repeat the phrase “separation of church and state.” How many know where it came from? It isn’t in the Declaration of Independence. It isn’t in the Constitution. It isn’t in the Bill of Rights. It comes from an 1802 letter Thomas Jefferson wrote to the Danbury Baptists, assuring them the government would stay out of their faith. For almost 150 years, courts quoted his full paragraph. Then in 1947, in Everson v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court pulled five words out of that letter and built a new idea on them with no legal precedent behind it. By 1962, prayer was out of public schools. By 1963, the Bible followed. So, who convinced you that your faith and biblical values belong at church but not at the ballot box? “Lift your chin” is a phrase we throw around here at Genesis, and one we hope sticks here. We live busy lives in a fairly self- absorbed world, but the Gospel reveals a Messiah who lifted His chin to see and rescue us. Christ changes our lives, places us in a community, and then He shapes the way we see the world around us. As a church, it is our desire to be a community on mission, a family of people who lift our chins to see Jesus, our brothers and sisters, our neighbors, and the nations. As we begin our new school-year rhythms, our Fall vision series will invite us to be a people who lift our chins to see Jesus and then lift our chins to see the world through His eyes. John 4 reveals that Jesus lived his life with a lifted chin, seeking hurting people who needed a Savior. The Samaritan woman was an outsider on every level, including ethnically and morally. Yet Jesus sought her out, and made her feel safe as He gave her the opportunity to see who He really is. As a result, her life was changed and she lifted her chin to see her community to share Jesus with them. Our dream for Genesis is to be a community who sees our neighbors and nations through Jesus’ eyes, and that Genesis would be a place that is safe for anyone no matter their background, religious heritage, struggle, or culture as he or she explores Jesus. And when people find Jesus they would begin to lift their chin and join the mission. This is what it means to be a place for new beginnings.
