Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Kendra Winchester discuss Rebecca Lowman's evocative performance of this atmospheric novel—with a large dash of fabulism—set in the Alaskan wilderness. Birdie is a single mom who is waitressing at a lodge when a man walks in and changes her life. Arthur is an outdoorsman, a man of few words, but it's love at first sight. Birdie and her daughter, Emaleen, go to live with Arthur in his remote cabin, spending the summer days basking in the beautiful Alaskan mountains. It's all idyllic—until a dark element enters the story.  Read our review of the audiobook at our website: https://www.audiofilemagazine.com/reviews/read/266403/ Published by Random House Audio Discover thousands of audiobook reviews and more at AudioFile's website https://www.audiofilemagazine.com/    Learn more about your ad choices. Pulitzer Prize finalist Éowyn Ivey is the author of "The Snow Child." The book captivated readers with its blend of folklore and the Alaska wilderness. Raised in Alaska, Éowyn's connection to the land is woven into her storytelling, creating atmospheric and emotionally resonant narratives. Before becoming a novelist, though, she worked as a journalist and then as a bookseller. Both shaped her approach to research and storytelling. As a journalist, she says she often felt constrained by the need to report just the facts, realizing that the full story often involved emotions, complexities and more nuanced truths that couldn't always be captured in a news story. This naturally led her to fiction, where she could immerse readers in themes like isolation, survival and the mystical interplay between humans and nature. Her latest novel, "Black Woods, Blue Sky," continues her exploration of myth, survival and the untamed beauty of Alaska. She says that there's a power in fiction, an empathy that forms between the book, the reader and the author. As a storyteller, she strives to create feelings and experiences that resonate — moments where a reader might think, “That's exactly what I felt, but I've never been able to put it into words,” or, “I've never felt so seen.” This is true for situations she's personally experienced and ones she hasn't — that's where her research comes into play. For Éowyn, writing is about more than just crafting a narrative, it's about discovering the metaphors and the poetry within the concepts she explores. When she set out to be a novelist, she never imagined it would go beyond the Pacific Northwest. But it has. Her writing is known by people all over the world. But at heart, she still writes for her fellow Alaskans.

Hearts & Daggers

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2025 39:41

Summary: We'll make it quick this week, folks! Or not, since Holly and Devin can't resist waxing poetic about how awesome novellas are. Shorter than a novel, longer than a short story, these ~160 page books really pack a punch. Growing in popularity in Holly's wheelhouse lately but still more rare in Devin's, this corner of published works is sometimes overlooked but always worth digging into more deeply, especially if you enjoy watching authors use economy of words to create a world you're sucked into.  Topics Discussed: The Dagger (5:15): Holly discussed We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, a gothic horror novella following Merricat Blackwood, an 18 year old girl who lives on her family's estate with her older sister Constance and their ailing uncle Julian. The Blackwood family used to be larger but was decimated by arsenic poisoning at a family dinner six years before the novel begins, for which Constance was accused and acquitted. Their days pass in happy isolation until cousin Charles appears, seeking to claim the Blackwood fortune. His presence threatens their secluded way of life, and Merricat feels she must act swiftly to keep them all safe from his designs. Holly's key takeaways were: The novel explores themes of societal cruelty, mob mentality, and the persecution of those who are different. Through Merricat and Constance, the reader explores human nature and society's treatment of outsiders. The story can be read as a subversive take on women's roles, with Constance as the domestic caretaker and Merricat as a defiant, untamed force. Jackson creates a chilling atmosphere of dread and paranoia, influencing modern gothic fiction and psychological thrillers we see today. She explores the lines between social ostracization and self-imposed exile, how the Blackwoods' past defines their present and how Constance and Merricat cope differently with their trauma.  As a novella, Holly was impacted the most by Jackson's effective writing in so few pages. She felt joy at every single sentence, every weird quirk of the characters, the tone that was partly childlike and partly old fashioned, every detail about their house and their shopping and the claustrophobia of it all. The Heart (16:56): Devin discussed Loathe to Love You by Ali Hazelwood, a collection of three novellas that can stand alone but also work in harmony as a collection. Mara, Sadie, and Hannah are three engineers with different specialities, living in different places, united by friendship and their hatred for men thrust into their lives. Whether you're following Mara as she fights for space living with Liam, Sadie as she grapples with rejection while trapped in an elevator with Erik, or Hannah as she struggles for survival (and control of herself) with Ian in the arctic, these novellas are delightfully feminist and steamy. Devin's key takeaways were: As with many of Hazelwood's works, these novellas are grounded first and foremost in feminism and women in STEM; the three protagonists are very different but united in their work in the sciences and the challenges they face as women in a male-dominated field. As a novella, these stories stay tight and build romantic tension by putting the protagonists in closed environments; roommates, trapped in an elevator, in a tiny research facility in frigid conditions. By limiting the scope of locations and characters, Hazelwood could more efficiently create the perfect cocktail of emotion, tension, and chemistry that makes for great Enemies to Lovers reading. A standout component of the novella collection was the men; each in their own way was misunderstood by the female protagonists and for good reason. The flip of the switch from skepticism and assumption that they're just one of those sexist, ladder-climbing men to understanding and attraction was a blast to read.  Hot On the Shelf (29:51): Devin: Likeable Badass by Alison Fragle, PhD Holly: Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson What's Making Our Hearts Race (34:52): Devin: Sex Lives of College Girls Season 3 on Max Holly: Say Nothing on Hulu   Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

My guest today is the German filmmaker Uwe Boll. Born in Wermelskirchen he decided he wanted to direct films at the age of ten, after seeing Marlon Brando star in Mutiny on the Bounty. It wasn't until he was in his mid-thirties, however, that he directed his first major motion picture, Blackwoods, a psychological thriller that a critic for the New York Times described as ‘smart and diabolical'.It was, however, his adaptations of video games for which he made his name. House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, BloodRayne, Far Cry and Postal were just some of the games he adapted to film. Not all of them lost money, but most were derided by reviewers. My guest did not shy away from engaging his harshest critics, however. In 2006 he challenged five of them to a boxing match. Ten years later he announced his retirement from filmmaking. Nevertheless, since then he has announced several new projects, including First Shift, a police drama set in the New York, that released in the summer.Links:Boll Films Official WebsiteGame Over, Uwe Boll -- Vanity Fair. House of the Dragon (HBO Max) Out of 5 Sitting in a Field Wondering Where You Went Wrongs Darryl: 4/5 Brian: 4.14/5 Episode 5: “Regent” Written by: Ti Mikkel Directed by: Clare Kilner Air Date: July 14, 2024 Summary: Corlys, Rhaenyra and Baela mourn Rhaenys’ death. Criston parades Meleys’ head through King’s Landing, though the near-starving smallfolk consider it a bad omen. Aegon has survived but is comatose and severely burned, while Sunfyre is presumed near-dead; Criston withholds telling Alicent what truly happened at the battle. Daemon dreams of incest with his mother, who calls him her favorite son. The Small Council reject Alicent as regent and elect Aemond instead, both because he is male and because they want a dragonrider on the throne. Aemond orders the city gates shut, preventing blacksmith Hugh Hammer and his family from fleeing. Jeyne Arryn tells Rhaena she wanted a mature dragon for protection rather than two dragon hatchlings. At the Twins, Jace obtains the Freys’ allegiance in exchange for Harrenhal. Rhaenyra sends Elinda to King’s Landing to spy. Daemon declares he will reign as king once a large enough army is raised; he orders the Blackwoods to ravage the Brackens and forces their fealty. Alys criticizes his ruthlessness and the riverlords denounce his atrocities. Rhaenyra laments lacking riders for Vermithor and Silverwing, the only dragons large enough to challenge Vhagar; Jace suggests searching other houses for Valyrian descendants. Cobra Kai (Netflix) Out of 10 You Really Are a Cream Puff, but Not Reallys Darryl: 8/10 Brian: 8.58/10 Episode 1: “Peacetime in the Valley” Written by: Bob Dearden Directed by: Joel Novoa Air Date: July 18, 2024 Summary: Following the demise of Cobra Kai, the students of both Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang prepare for the Sekai Taikai. After disagreements over their training styles, Johnny and Chozen challenge each other to a fight. Daniel learns that Chozen’s pride was wounded when Silver stabbed him in the back and Kumiko did not reply to his voice messages. Miguel tries to ease the tension between Sam and Tory while Robby attempts to make amends with Kenny, but he encounters Shawn, who tells him to leave Kenny alone. Robby and Miguel take on Shawn while Sam and Tory try to reason with Kenny into joining their dojo, but to no avail. After receiving a text message, Johnny goes to Coyote Creek, where Stingray tells him to retake the Cobra Kai brand with Kreese and Silver gone. The next morning, Johnny concedes and tells Daniel that Miyagi-Do has the right to represent the students in the Sekai Taikai, but he and Chozen still have their fight. After a talk with Shawn, Kenny joins Miyagi-Do. Elsewhere, Kreese enters Kim Da-eun’s dojo, telling the students that Cobra Kai is back. Episode 2: “The Prize” Written by: Joe Piarulli & Luan Thomas Directed by: Joel Novoa Air Date: July 18, 2024 Summary: Kreese proposes to Master Kim to have his dojo represent Cobra Kai in the Sekai Taikai, only to be turned down after Da-eun’s previous partnership with Silver ended in failure. Master Kim then agrees to the proposal if Kreese ventures to a remote island and recovers his ancient family knife deep within a cave. Kreese finds the knife, but is bitten by an albino cobra, causing him to see hallucinations of Silver and Johnny. Meanwhile, Miguel discovers that Kyler is the subject of hazing by a fraternity that has no plans of letting him in. With the help of Miguel, Demetri, Eli, and Brucks, Kyler takes down the fraternity at their party. After the Diaz apartment experiences a leaky ceiling due to clogged sewage pipes, Johnny gets a sales job at LaRusso Auto Group to save up for a new home. Upon conquering his inner demons and vanquishing his sole weakness, Kreese beheads the cobra and returns to Master Kim with the knife and the dead cobra’s head, determined to not allow anyone to stop him from his goal – not even Johnny. Episode 3: “Sleeper” Written by: Mattea Greene Directed by: Ralph Macchio Air Date: July 18, 2024 Summary: Kreese takes control of the Kim dojo training, focusing on the delinquent Kwon and molding him. That night, after some prodding by Kreese to use his anger for a purpose, Kwon defeats Yoon, the dojo’s top student, in a fight and rips off the King Cobra badge as a personal souvenir, affirming his role as the leader. At the Miyagi house, Daniel, Chozen, and Amanda discover a chest hidden under the floor. Upon opening the chest, they discover Mr. Miyagi co-owned a boxing gym and reportedly fled the country to China after he was wanted for assault and robbery in 1947. After noticing the friendship between Sam and Tory making them weak in their training, Johnny invites them to Devon’s home for a slumber party. Despite Johnny’s plan failing, Sam and Tory suddenly get into an argument before they apologize to each other for their wrongdoings. The next day, the Miyagi-Do dojo learns that the Sekai Taikai will be hosted in Barcelona, and that only six fighters will be allowed to represent each dojo. Episode 4: “Underdogs” Written by: Chris Rafferty Directed by: Sherwin Shilati Air Date: July 18, 2024 In order to determine the six fighters who will represent Miyagi-Do in the Sekai Taikai, Daniel and Johnny bring in Barnes to shake down the dojo. Hawk, Robby, Miguel, Sam, Tory, Mitch, Kenny, Nate, Chris, Demetri, Devon, and Anthony are chosen by Barnes for the second round of eliminations. The next day, the top 12 engage in a battle royale, where each student must rid another of their flags. Tory, Robby, Sam, and Miguel immediately advance. Anthony doubts himself after receiving a bloody nose from Kenny during the battle royale. Johnny confronts Barnes upon learning Devon did not make the cut. The next morning, Barnes has Hawk, Demetri, Devon, and Kenny run through the forest and capture two flags to determine the final lineup. Devon captures the first flag after Kenny suddenly experiences diarrhea while Demetri defeats Hawk to make the team. Kenny accuses Anthony of spiking his water with Mitch’s laxative, when in reality it was Devon, while Daniel suspects Johnny had a part in getting Devon in the lineup. Episode 5: “Best of the Best” Written by: Michael Jonathan Smith Directed by: Sherwin Shilati Air Date: July 18, 2024 Summary: Tory encounters Kreese while returning from the Medical Center, who warns her not to trust Miyagi-do. Daniel and Johnny decide have Sam, Tory, Miguel, and Robby fight each other to secure their spots as team captains. Tory returns home, only to discover her mother has passed away due to an undetected blood clot. On the day of the contest, Robby defeats Miguel to become male captain. During the girls’ fight, Tory displays aggression and is about to score the winning point when Daniel intervenes before she reveals to everyone of her mother’s death and leaves the team, forfeiting the female captain position to Sam. This incident causes an argument between Daniel and Johnny over how they should have handled the situation. Hawk is selected to take over Tory’s spot in the team, with Demetri being slightly displeased at the turn of events. As Robby and Sam are given their captain headbands, Daniel suddenly recognizes a similar headband from Mr. Miyagi’s chest and realizes his sensei fought in the Sekai Taikai too as a team captain and that his headband was actually bloodied at the ends, making Daniel question his beliefs. The Miyagi-Do team arrives in Barcelona for the tournament, where they encounter Kreese and Da-eun’s new four-member Cobra Kai representing South Korea, led by Kwon and Tory. What's up Bros? In part 1 of our recap, the cast is dealing with the loss of Rhaenys. Corlys finds himself alone at Driftmark, Rhaenyra struggles with allowing those around her to fight her battles. The smallfolk in Kings Landing are facing food shortages and a bad omen as Criston Cole continues to suck and parades a decapitated dragon head through the streets of Kings Landing. Aegon appears to be alive but only barely and the Iron Throne sits vacant for the time being. Criston Cole is struggling to find his way after realizing just how irrelevant he and other foot soldiers are when it comes to dragon war. Rhaenyra feels as though her council is not following her and is doing her best to maintain control over her people. Jace flies to the Frey after frustration boils over from him not being able to contribute to the fight and ends up enlisting the Frey's at the Twins in exchange for Harrenhall. Meanwhile, Daemon sets the Blackwoods on house Bracken to get them to fall in line in an attempt to gain a toehold in the Riverland's. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

What's up Bros? In the conclusion of our episode, Aemond takes over as King while Aegon is recovering (if Aegon recovers). Alicent attempts to cope with losing all of her power on the council as pretty much everyone agrees that Aemond is the clear choice. Jace successfully enlists the Frey's at the Twins in exchange for Harrenhall. Meanwhile at Harrenhall, Daemon continues his spiral towards insanity as he tries to navigate his battle of who he is. Does he have a heart? Is he on team Rhaenyra? He makes it known that a potential plan is that he himself takes over the Iron Throne. Baela successfully enlists Corlys as Hand of The King which hopefully garners more support for Rhaenyra as she navigates her next moves. Hugh Hammer (the blacksmith) shows us the state of Kings Landing as Aemond orders the gate shut. And could we be seeing the set up for another member of the Targaryen bloodline...? House Blackwood successfully recruits the Brackens, or so we thought, until the Riverlords come to Daemon and inform him that the Blackwoods pillaged and plundered their lands under the Targaryen banner. Not exactly instilling hope that those two armies can come together. Jace returns to Dragonstone and he and Rhaenyra decide to search for distant relatives that also contain dragon blood to hopefully recruit more dragon riders to the cause... Send us a Text Message. This week was all about old fueds and bad blood, especially with the opening scene between the Blackwoods and the Brackens. Not only are the feeding on a personal level, but it has heightened due to them being on opposing sides of the dance. Aegon is ready for war and willing to strike, while Rhaenyra is very hesitant, almost to a fault. This episode was less about action and more about revelation. We got conformation on Ulf the White, where Rhaenyra is sending her children, we got Alys Rivers, and the most important reveal was Alicent and Rhaenyra both finding out the truth of Viserys' last words....I think Rhae is going to be war ready moving forward. If you want to keep the fun going with us throughout the week, come join our Facebook group. THE WATCH DEM THRONES FACEBOOK GROUPhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/126567443834910/?ref=share&mibextid=NSMWBTTO WATCH AND SUBSCRIBE:Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/blackwithnochaser/Twitter:https://twitter.com/BeBlackNoChaser?t=pVFV06lBFdZRu72ot4uCjA&s=09Twitter:https://twitter.com/WatchDemThrones?t=q0ngrYPlugf0ttzM2jo39A&s=09Apple Music: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/watch-dem-thrones-by-black-with-no-chaser/id1641754247Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/1qI1bJ1vIlobu502w6zrtN?si=mtsa3gZYRZW_3FmlCrv7UgBWNC RADIO: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/bwnc-radio/id6443800363Amazon Musichttps://music.amazon.com/podcasts/45279c3a-c09f-47d1-a3a3-88e6e2507230/watch-dem-thrones-by-black-with-no-chaserIHeartRadiohttps://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-watch-dem-thrones-by-black-101286659/?cmp=android_share&sc=android_social_share&pr=false#gameofthrones #demdragons #blackwithnochaser #houseofthedragonhbo #dragonseeds #theblacks #thegreens #houseofthedragon #youtube #targaryens #podcast #podsincolor #applemusic #spotifymusic #podsincolor #starks #lannisters #Velaryon

Vrolijk kerstfeest! The Blackwoods. Everyone knows their name. Blossom Blackwood burst onto the silver screen in 1962, and in the decades that followed, she would become one of the most celebrated actors of our time—and the matriarch of the most famous Black family in Hollywood. To her great-granddaughters, Hollis and Ardith, she has always just been Bebe. And when she passes away, it changes everything. Hollis Blackwood was never interested in fame. Still, she's surrounded by it, whether at home with her family or at the prestigious Dupree Academy among Los Angeles' elite. When private photos of Hollis are leaked in the wake of Blossom's death, she is thrust into the spotlight she's long avoided—and finds that trust may be a luxury even she can't afford. Ardith Blackwood has always lived in the public eye. A television star since childhood, she was perhaps closer with Blossom than anyone—especially after Ardith's mother died in a drug overdose. Ever since, she has worked to be everything her family, her church, and the public want her to be. But as a family secret comes to light and the pressures from all sides begin to mount, she wonders what is left beneath the face she shows the world. Weaving together the narratives of Hollis, Ardith, and Blossom, award-winning author Brandy Colbert tells an unforgettable story set in an America where everything is personal, and nothing is private.

Difficult Conversations -Lessons I learned as an ICU Physician

Welcome to Difficult Conversations with Dr. Anthony Orsini.  Even though October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, breast cancer should be on our minds all year around. I can't think of anyone more qualified to talk about breast cancer and the many difficult conversations associated with this diagnosis then my special guest, Dr. Michele Blackwood. She is currently the Chief of Breast Services at RWJ/ Barnabas Health and the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.  She also serves as the Northern Medical Director of Breast Services and joined St. Barnabas Medical Center as the Medical Director of Breast Health and Disease Management in 2009.  Michele has appeared on national and local media programs, including Fox Five, “60 Minutes,” CBS's Early Show, and Good Day New York. Even with all her credentials, it is her reputation for the compassionate manner in which she practices and her ability to navigate the many difficult conversations that  that make her special. My Co-host today is Liz Poret-Christ, who is our Director of Programming at The Orsini Way and a patient of Dr. Blackwoods. Dr. Blackwood tells us about her career. She shares the many ways the breast cancer field has evolved dramatically and how survival rates are so much better. Dr. Orsini reveals some incredible statistics about breast cancer. They talk about how healing can begin when you first hear the diagnosis and how medicine is about relationships, and not about the surgery.  Liz shares how her conversation went when she found out she had breast cancer.  Michele takes us through her approach, her plan, and her thoughts on how she has the initial conversation with a patient. We learn how Michele handles each patient's situation, forms that special relationship with each person, and how she gives them options and guidance. Liz tells us more about how grateful she was with Michele letting her know the best path for her to take with her diagnosis. Michele explains more about physicians evolving in their style over time and how her style has changed.  She also explains how she addresses a lot of things with her patients so they will be in sync with her to have a better outcome after surgery.  We find out how Michele approaches her most difficult conversation with faith, comfort, and quality of life.  We end with Dr. Orsini, Michele, and Liz sharing their words of wisdom, with this being Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  If you enjoyed this podcast, please   subscribe on your favorite podcast platform. Host:Dr. Anthony Orsini and Liz Poret-ChristGuests:Dr. Michele BlackwoodFor More Information:Difficult Conversations I Learned as an ICU Physician Podcast EpisodesThe Orsini WayThe Orsini Way-FacebookThe Orsini Way-LinkedinThe Orsini Way-InstagramThe Orsini Way-Twitterdrorsini@theorsiniway.comIt's All In The Delivery: Improving Healthcare Starting With A Single Conversation by Dr. Anthony OrsiniResources Mentioned:Michele Blackwood, MD-RWJ Barnabas HealthMichele Blackwood, MD-Rutgers Cancer Institute of New JerseyNational Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.

What of the future of Manufacturing in Australia? A leader’s thoughts on sustainability, diversification & collaboration. With special guest Ben Joseph, Managing Director at Josco

Small Biz Matters

Small Biz Matters – #194 Providing the small business community with educational content and advocacy since 2014 with Alexi Boyd, broadcaster, advocate and small business owner. Date: 2 February 2021 According to our guest Ben Joseph, manufacturing in Australia is the one sector in which you SHOULDN’T niche. With tight margins, a globally competitive industry and fragile supply chains, a lack of diversification can mean you can’t adapt fast. For instance, when a global shutdown strikes how can you pivot your way out of that one? The industry, like all other small businesses, has learned a great deal from 2020. Good, solid processes, tech integration, communication and of course resilience have been necessities for survival into 2021. Part of Josco’s recipe for success has been solid processes, access to real time data through reliable tech integration but more important than that - communication with key stakeholders. When the world shut down ‘cause of COVID they relied on those relationships to build back up again. And some were in Australia and some overseas. See, diversification in action! But what of the future of the industry and the reality of being independent in Australia - is it just a pipe dream? Is it the industry which will drive change or does key policy makers have a role to play to shape its future. Let’s hear from Ben, who has lots to say on the issues of the future of the industry, procedures, tech integration, communication and of course resilience necessary for survival from 2020 into 2021. What would you like to see in terms of the the future of manufacturing in Australia and whether it, in reality, can be sustainable? A “blended” approach and working collaboratively and utilising the skills in which we excel seems to work at the moment But the industry needs to be evolving and adaptable all the time. What did 2020 teach us about globalisation? The fact is there are risks as well as positives What is the Government focusing - innovative manufacturing, reducing the dependency on one nation as our “factory”. Innovation reduces our dependency on nations which provide labour cheaply Describe the affect the COVID crisis had on the manufacturing industry as a whole Disruption of supply chains Breakdown in communication How long did the “panic”last Was it a matter of survival of the fittest or was it something about your processes and procedures which meant you could survive? Why was being aware of your cash flow position and real time data so important? What about the relationships with your suppliers - did they take a beating and did you have to rebuild the trust? What lessons did you learn about business continuity now that you’ve come out the other end? Planning for the future – where do you invest and how do you make those decisions? What do you consider as “Innovation” when reinventing & reinvigorate your business Focus on your strengths Remote working – how to manage staff What are some signs to look out for in for business owners how to use the guide to support the conversation? To find out more go to their website: https://www.josco.com.au/ About our Guest: Ben Joseph is the Managing Director of Josco Australia, a trusted Australian owned and operated business supplying hand tools and power tool accessories for nearly 45 years. Originally from Adelaide, Ben spent his formative years in Perth where he commenced his career before moving back to Adelaide and then ultimately Melbourne 27 years ago. Throughout his working life, Ben has worked for manufacturers, importers, multinationals and iconic Australian businesses, including Hills Industries and Philips Electronics. As the second generation in the Josco business Ben has seen the business grow from its formation in a back yard garage, to a business now operating nationally throughout Australia New Zealand and the UK, with major customers including Bunnings, Mitre 10, Total Tools and Blackwoods. In recent years, Ben has worked actively on the business to transition the business to the generation, becoming the major shareholders together with his other director Maury Chalmers.  In making this change there has been a transformation from a “family business” to a more corporate professional organisation and the disciplines associated with this.  Many of these changes proved highly beneficial as the impact of COVID-19 hit in 2020. “Trust” is a major focus for both Ben and Josco.  As many of Josco’s products are used in heavy duty applications on powerful power tools, the ability of the products to perform under pressure is critical.  Over many years the products have been put to the test in the toughest Australian conditions and met the challenge.  Josco’s customers and end users “trust” the business and products, for their reliability and ability to get the job done. Ben is married with 4 sons, one of whom is now the 3rd generation working in the business in a sales capacity.

This week we welcome gospel greats, The Blackwoods, along with the comedy legend, Yakov Smirnoff! "The Blackwoods" bring the Blackwood family's gospel music tradition to the Branson stage! The son of gospel music royalty, R.W. Blackwood, and his talented wife, Donna, carry on the family tradition of uplifting, inspirational, and just plain good gospel music! After spending 15 years entertaining packed venues in Pigeon Forge, the Blackwood family had made their home in Branson. They'll be performing the music made famous by the Blackwood Brothers Quartet, and sharing heartwarming stories from the family's history in music. They also include songs in honor of some of the greatest performers in the world, the very performers they've had the privilege to work with. A solid tribute to honor our Veterans in this great country serves to wrap up this one of a kind of performance. Relive the excitement of the Blackwood Singers performing with Elvis Presley, Charlie Daniels, the Oak Ridge Boys, the Gatlin Brothers, Johnny Cash, Statler Brothers, Barbara Mandrell, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Ronnie Milsap, and the list goes on! The Blackwood Brothers Quartet was blessed with scores of Dove Awards and multiple Grammy's, and all that incredible talent runs in the family! So, if legendary gospel music touches something inside you, then make plans now to be in Branson for "The Blackwoods!" Blackwood FEVER... Catch it! For more information, call the Americana Box Office: 417-544-8700 or visit their Facebook page: The Blackwoods. Yakov Smirnoff will Make America Laugh Again when he returns to the Branson stage in 2020! His hilarious take on all things American, and his humorously heartfelt observations on life and love, and the joys of navigating the ups and downs of both, have kept Yakov on our comic radar for years. We first fell in love with this charming Russian immigrant back in the 70s and 80s when he dominated television talk shows with his stand up comedy, and then stole the movie spotlight from huge artists like Jack Nicholson, Tom Hanks, and the late and much loved Richard Pryor and Robin Williams. His movie roles include Brewster’s Millions, Moscow on the Hudson, The Money Pit, and Heartburn -- on television, he had a recurring role on Night Court. His goal to become the ultimate U.S. citizen didn’t stop with his pledge, Yakov went on to get an impressive formal education, including a degree in Applied Positive Psychology from the prestigious University of Pennsylvania, and his doctorate degree in Psychology and Global Leadership from Pepperdine University. He’s made good use of that education teaching courses in Happiness and Laughter, and combining it with his natural wisdom and wit, and an uncanny knack for noticing all the little nuances of human behavior, to keep audiences in stitches around the world! Classic Ghost Stories
Episode 20: The Kit-Bag by Algernon Blackwood

Classic Ghost Stories

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 7, 2019 33:00

Algernon Blackwood Algernon Blackwood was an English writer born in 1869 who ended up as a broadcaster on the radio and TV. His writing was very well received at this time and critics loved him. Even the great American author of weird tales HP Lovecraft cited Blackwood is one of the masters of the craft. Blackwood came from a well-to-do family and was privately educated despite that he was quite an adventurous man. He was interested in Hinduism as a young boy and his career was varied. For example, he ran a dairy farm in Canada and also hotel in the country. It became a newspaper reporter in New York City and was also a bartender and a model and also a violin teacher! All of this time, though he was always writing. He liked being outdoors and his stories often feature the outdoors. He was also interested in the occult and was a member of the hermetic order of the Golden Dawn along with such other characters is Arthur Machen and WB Yeats and Alisteir Crowley. I chose this story The Kitbag because it fitted in with the Christmas period we are approaching but the kitbag is not Blackwoods most famous story. His two most famous stories are The Willows which features a trip down the River Danube in central Europe and The Wendigo which is set obviously in North America. The Kitbag is a simple story in terms of its structure. In this case rather than the protagonist being the victim of his own wickedness as is often the case in horror stories Johnson here is a complete innocent. His only crime is to have partaken in the trial of a notorious murderer. Blackwood portrays Johnson as a likeable if somewhat naive chap who has been shocked by the horrible things he has heard. He has a good relationship with his boss whom he asks to lend him his kitbag when he plans a very innocent and refreshing Christmas break in the Alps skiing in the bright frosty air and dancing with red cheeked girls in the apres-ski. By an unfortunate error Johnson’s boss has sent the wrong kitbag and instead of the fine new one, he is given the exhibit that the murderer cut up the victim and stuffed them into. Johnson ends up with this stained monstrosity, which he only seems to find dirty and odd after he has long packed his socks and skates.  It seems that the spirit of the murderer comes with the kitbag. We find out at the end that the supernatural happenings only occurred after the murderer. unbeknownst to Johnson, killed himself. The story is very simple but what Blackwood does very well is ratchet up the mounting tension of the old monster in the house scenario. We hear, and we become aware that something threatening is there but we never quite get a glimpse of it until the very end. The great ghost writer MR James ,who was also an admirer of Algernon Blackwood, talked about the importance of subtlety in ghost stories. James is very much against being too blatant and showing too much. I think we see this still in modern horror stories and I'm aware that the movie alien use this to great effect at the beginning and a different part of that movie series where by the monstrous alien is suspected and heard but not directly seen.  I recently watched a film called The Ritual set in a forest in Norway and again until quite late in the film we went we didn’t see the monster. When the monster is just in your imagination it is far more terrifying than when it is portrayed on the screen. That’s it for this week. More Christmas ghosts to come.
