Clare Balding is celebrating a listener's birthday today. Not something we've done before, but when we heard that Lynda Pettit was marking her 60th birthday by walking 60 different routes with 60 different people, and that the idea was partly inspired by Ramblings, well we just had to join in, especially as it's Clare's 25th year on Ramblings (double celebrations!). Lynda and several friends took Clare for a hike on the Stoney Path walk in the Pentland Hills near West Linton, about 20 miles south of Edinburgh. They met outside The Gordon Arms Hotel on the A702 and went up into the southern Pentlands. It's a route that takes in the Old Roman road that heads up to Edinburgh; Stoney Path, also known as Thieves Road, an ancient droving track used by cattle reivers herding stolen livestock through the hills; and Baddinsgill Reservoir. They also ascended Mount Maw, catching sight of a beautiful cloud inversion on the way. Views from the top stretched around 80 miles to a snow-capped Ben Lomond, Scotland's most southerly Munro. Oi, bellend, if you liked the pod give us a rating, a review, send us some love. This week Eilish McColgan joins for a heel kick and double thumbs combo as Stefan Tromboni pipes us into episode 6, in which we talk too much London marathon TV coverage, race shoes, spray on shoes, shoe subscriptions, and Cape Town marathon giving vouchers for shoes to try to become a major. We learn about Lew's deep deep love for Clare Balding, and John's hatred for clanky cups and cheating sticks on the South Downs, and me and Baz nip to the pub during Steve Southern's Ted Talk on supplements and VO2 Max.And thanks to Ste for a fantastic performance. We do have to question if he was on the juice too as he even out-performed himself. Who need's greens when you've got Guinness? And who grows up wanting to be a triple jumper.

What a week it's been at Warrington as the podcast endeavours to tackle the missing piece of a clusterfuck of a jigsaw. Dennis holds court in a wig not fit for Chambers, Sam requests a name change and doesn't hold back - although is his transmission lost in translation? And Rob questions our interim coach's due diligence based on a 1993 sale at Renault Manchester. Daniel offers up his recruitment strategy, there's a game review no one gives a shit about, caveats aplenty and endless time frame continuums. Chemmy Alcott is Britain's most successful female skier, having competed at 4 winter Olympics and won a World Cup event. She also presents the BBC's Ski Sunday programme and is part of the team for the BBC's winter Olympics coverage. As a skier, Chemmy might seem a strange guest for a triathlon-based podcast. However Chemmy oozes passion and energy and has so many lessons to share from sport. So if you need a confidence boost for a race coming up, or if you're feeling a bit 'meh' because you're injured, or if you're just finding the news too depressing, then listen to this, you won't regret it. You'll hear: 08:00 Chemmy's work with BBC Sport during the Olympics 'it's such an honour and it's like working on ski sunday on steroids.' What it's like working with BBC Sport presenter Clare Balding. 'She really is an empowering mentor to have and she has an incredible knowledge and she never steps on the toes of others, she makes everyone else be at their best.' 13:00 We talk about why it was okay talking about failing and losing. When you fail you have a massive opportunity to learn from that. I'm mentally stronger because I am honest about why I failed. 15:30 Pressure, expectation, underperforming and the danger of holding back. Can you be confident enough to risk it all? 18:00 Confidence on and off the skis. I used to struggle a lot and when I was coming back from injury, I pretended I was Lindsey Vonn. Pretending to be someone else is a really easy technique to get you out of that fear bubble and then you can be yourself. 27:40 Chemmy talks about how she manages to mix work and family. 'I need to work but when I come back to them, I'm able to be very present. But it is a revolution.' 29:00 Some of the messages Chemmy tries to get across to the athletes she coaches. It's confidence! And we do a simple activity every night to help with that. I want to use sport for lifeskill gains. 31:00 Chemmy's thoughts for those who have a lack of confidence, whether ahead of a race or because of fear. "You have to be honest and then you have to take those negative feelings, use those feelings and turn them into a strong power." You have a choice, it's within you. Do you let it stop you or do you use it to inspire you to be better' 37:00 Is Chemmy always 'on it?' I think it must annoying for those around me. 'The vivaciousness and gung-ho I have goes back to when my mum died and it was a complete shock and now I think you don't know when it's all over' 43:00 We talk about life without ski and climate change. 46:00 Some brilliant advice when it comes to injuries. "It is challenging and people react in different ways. You have to realistic and present every day. You can't let that bitterness not drive you. You can use it in a positive way. 49:00 Channelling nerves and fears when you're about to start a race. "This changed throughout my career a the beginning I always used to try too hard but that was a massive block because I would over-try. Then I tried to be loose and I would say to myself 'loose as a goose and I used to try and take my brain out and put it into my feet so it could feel the run.' 'I looked quite unprofessional in the start gates because I used to be juggling, to switch my brain off. But I needed to not care and trust myself. 52:00 We talk about why Chemmy is so passionate about championing other females. "My mum always used to tell me to go into a room and fine a woman who inspires you and go and talk to them. Have the confidence to go and talk to them, have a bit of them and make yourself better." The daughter of a top horse trainer, and herself a champion jockey, Clare Balding OBE made the leap into broadcasting as the BBC's racing specialist. Since then though, she's reported on everything, from the Olympic Games and Wimbledon to Royal Weddings and Crufts. But for a decade she was also hiding her sexuality and looked to her father for approval. Now, at 50, and many many accolades later, Clare finds motivation from within and her wife Alice, who's always there to lend a hand. Clare is unceasingly playful and energised, but is also afraid of purchasing tampons from the shop - so how does she feel about having her first hot flush? Gabby invites her to talk about menopause, whilst hearing an inspiring story from Carolyn Harris, the MP who's cross party bill has taken the subject all the way to Whitehall - and won.
Gabby Logan will not succumb to beige middle-age - and neither should you! As we reach the middle of our lives things are changing; emotionally, physically, mentally. And with that our expectations, priorities, ambitions, and dreams shift too. But what's really going on when we reach our mid-points? With a little help from a host of well-known faces and some knowledgable experts, Gabby hopes to find the answers. In the fourth season of The MidPoint you'll hear from Clare Balding, Nihal Arthanayake, Sharleen Spiteri, James Nesbitt and so many more. So what are you waiting for? Hit subscribe now.

Here in Britain, we're known for having a 'stiff upper lip'.But do other countries have an equivalent? Well, Finland certainly does! And they called it 'sisu'. It's about grit, determination, and working toward a goal. It's a willingness to keep on going, even though you might not win the battle you're fighting. Hey, even if you don't win, the victory is in trying. There's no direct translation in English, so I've done my best to dig out the spirit of the word. And I've come to the conclusion it's about being gutsy, showing chutzpah, and just...keeping on. Pure determination through adversity.I've had the best time researching this word, and finding out more about a country I (embarrassingly) knew very little about. My research took me to the Finlandia University in Michigan, where I found a Professor of Finnish and Nordic Studies- Dr Hilary Virtanen (@HilaryVirtanen on twitter). Not only did she give me more info on sisu, she told me about times she, or students on her campus, have felt it too. After speaking to her I got a real sense that sisu, and the Finnish community she works with, are something pretty special. I also decided to ask around, and see if anyone else had felt this determination through adversity. And during a chat with Clare Balding about her new children's book, 'Fall Off, Get Back On, Keep Going', I realised this feeling extends to kids as well as adults. Her book is about giving kids the skills and belief they need to face struggles in life, and it's an absolute winner- I highly recommend it! And she very kindly told me about a very candid story from her own past- one that I'd never heard before- as an example of a time she's had to work through. Sisu was quite the most intriguing word I've come across in a long time, and it gave me a chance to indulge my love of history too. If anything, making this podcast was quite the opposite of sisu- it was a joy to make! Hopefully you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed putting it together. And next time you find yourself going through something a little tough- dig deep, and you might find some sisu to help you through. Oh, if you want to say hi, I'm on twitter, @GetEmotionalPod. Sports presenter and broadcaster Clare Balding has always been curious about her maternal great-grandfather and the 'thing that has been sort of whispered in the family - could he have been gay?' Getting to the truth of the matter is a challenge when all the evidence comes from a time when homosexuality was illegal. Digging into her father's side of the family takes Clare to New Jersey and New York, where she uncovers an extraordinary dynasty and American roots stretching back generations.
Jeremy sits down with Clare Balding broadcaster, rambler, scion of a racing dynasty, and now the author of a book about 'heroic animals'. Topics include racing, dogs, donkeys, anthropomorphisation. Jeremy makes a tabloid confession. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.
