Christine talks with Alia Joy, author of the book, Glorious Weakness: Discovering God in All We Lack. Alia wonders if weakness is her spiritual gift. You’ll understand what she means when you listen to this conversation. Alia shares about growing up in poverty and how that formed her. She also shares about the day in her teenage years when she decided to take her own life and what happened that saved her life in the literal sense but also the spiritual sense. Although God rescued Alia that day, Alia shares about how knowing God doesn’t magically fix everything. She talks about mental illness and suicidal ideation, explaining what it’s like to live with these things, how she reconciles God’s goodness with ongoing suffering, and what she wants Christians to know about mental illness. Alia Joy is an author who believes the darkness is illuminated when we grasp each other's hand and walk into the night together. She writes poignantly about her life with bipolar disorder as well as grief, faith, marriage, poverty, race, embodiment, and keeping fluent in the language of hope. God's power is made perfect in your weakness. We know the Bible verse, but most of us would rather run from weakness than embrace it. Years ago, Alia might have told you the same. She never expected to write a book about weakness, nor did she expect to wrestle with mental illness, but this journey has put her on a path to be a voice for the hurting, the broken, and the lonely. Her new book Glorious Weakness: Discovering God in All We Lack is meeting people in their place of need and giving them hope that they are not alone. There were so many incredible (and challenging) takeaways from this conversation with Alia. First, she offers a gentle reminder that sometimes our dreams don't include a checklist of things to do. In fact, we should probably question whether results are really the point of any dream. Is God asking you for results or is He asking you for obedience? Alia provides an excellent biblical reminder not to fret, worry about, or covet what someone else has. This is especially true when you encounter others who are pursuing a dream that feels very similar to yours. Guess what? That's not about you. If you feel you can celebrate someone who has a similar dream, then do so. But if you can't without fretting, then unfollow, scroll past, and ask God to help you let go of those feelings. In this episode, you'll also discover the value of finding a quiet place to release the noise of the world. Alia talks about how there can be too much of a good thing (like reading all the books or, for me, attending every last webinar so I can make up for what I think I lack in knowledge). If you're currently feeling alone in your struggles or the pursuit of your God-shaped dream, I promise you, you're not! Today’s guest has one WOW story! Her first book just released April 2nd and I read it in one sitting. It ripped my heart out. Glorious Weakness: Discovering God in All We Lack. That’s the title. Alia Joy is the author.
It can be tempting to make ourselves appear strong and in control. But author Alia Joy shares her personal story of how God became real through her weaknesses and struggles. Her book is Glorious Weakness: Discovering God in All We Lack.
Author Alia Joy joins me on the podcast today, sharing about her new book, Glorious Weakness. From Seth Haines' forward in the book: "Through sexual trauma, encounters with racism, the loss of a child, and mental health issues, Alia shares her suffering with such sensorial artistry that you cannot help but enter in. But this is not a book about suffering for the sake of suffering. Instead, this work leads you deeper into an experience of Christ, the suffering servant, and along the way exposes the faux-christ of middle-class privilege." Get this book, friends!! It is brilliant and breath-taking, leaving the reader speechless and more deeply in love with Jesus. www.aliajoy.com https://www.amazon.com/Glorious-Weakness-Discovering-God-Lack/dp/0801093341/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=alia+joy&qid=1557416647&s=gateway&sr=8-1

On today's podcast I'm talking with Alia Joy, author of the book Glorious Weakness: Discovering God in All We Lack. We talk about depression, abuse, weight, weakness, poverty, and more. Key Quote: "In the middle of that deep depression, when I was laying in bed for six weeks, I'm still beloved by God. I'm no less useful to the Kingdom of God in my weakness and sickness than I am if I was at a conference speaking to thousands of people or writing a book that tons of people read." -Alia Links: Get Alia's book by clicking HERE! ...
