James L. Haley, author of the naval adventure Putnam Series, joined the podcast to discuss his fourth installment in the series: "Captain Putnam for the Republic of Texas." Haley discusses the art of writing good historical fiction and why it's harder to write than nonfiction - which he has written immensely, including works on Jack London, Sam Houston, Hawaii, the Texas Supreme Court, and the Apaches. Don't miss this episode and be sure to check out Haley's Putnam Series - a great Christmas gift idea. If you enjoy the podcast, leave us a rating and a review!
Keri and Carter ponder communist marches in Austin and the origins of International Workers Day, and Carter criticizes the common use of the word "worker." Keri exposes Cori Bush's heinous tweets, and the two discuss the role of sports and other harmlessly tribal activities as healthy outlets for expressing psychological in-group preference. Next, Keri shares the story of a BLM podcaster who curses police and then allegedly kills one in a hit-and-run that very day. Finally, Carter urges parents to pay attention to their children's education and consider having one parent stay home. James L. Haley is one of Texas' finest writers. He has written a preeminent biography of Sam Houston, an award winning narrative history of Texas called Passionate Nation as well as several works of fiction, also very highly regarded. But we Texans take our history very seriously, so writing historical fiction about Texas can be a risky endeavor. James Haley delivers. His latest work is a naval adventure series featuring American naval officer Bliven Putnam. In the fourth book, Captain Putnam takes on a secret mission for the Republic of Texas during its fight for independence. I talked Mr. Haley into sitting down and discussing his writing process, research process, writing historical fiction versus history, as well as other topics around his work. Enjoy this interview with award winning author James L. Haley in the latest episode of Wise About Texas.
Sam Houston was never president of the United States, but he was the first president of the Independent Republic of Texas, one of the first senators of the state of Texas, and was ejected from the governorship of Texas for refusing to swear loyalty to the confederacy on the eve of the Civil War.Follow Houston as he runs away from home to live with the Cherokee, joins the army to fight under Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812, becomes Jackson's most likely heir as governor of Tennessee, flees Tennessee in disgrace when his first wife abandons him after 11 weeks, spends three years earning the name "Big Drunk" in the Indian territory, sobers up to lead Texas to independence from Mexico and then to annexation into the United States, and becomes a presidential hopeful before finally being forced out of office on the eve of the Civil War.In case you didn't notice, it's going to be a heck of a life!Bibliography1.
