Natalia Proops: “I love beautiful buildings and when our daughter was a year old, my husband, who is English, and I were thinking of moving to the UK. I came across a link to a castle for sale in France.  Everything I learned and dreamt off when I was a child and adolescent in Russia suddenly came flooding back to me: studying French, looking at the streets of Paris in magazines, etc. Even though it was a huge challenge and we both spoke French at the level of a 3-year old, we bought Chateau Landifer and moved to the Loire Valley. It wasn't the chateau/castle I had initially seen online. It was, however, in the same valley. This area of France is known for its vineyards, wineries, and castles. As you look up at Chateau Landifer, you see some sculptured faces on the corner of the towers. These are faces of neighbors at the time it was built, which was before Versailles. In France, Lily of the Valley is the flower of happiness. “Diorissimo, the perfume of Christian Dior, is an imitation of Lily of the Valley. It's impossible to extract the essence of certain flowers, so they need to be recreated. I absolutely love fragrances. When I moved to France, I began to study them.  In France, the first of May is Happiness Day as well as International Workers Day. People give one another small bouquets of Lily of the Valley on that day. I have attended various cooking schools and I prefer to cook meals from the countries I have visited. Through my studies, I became an Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultant (Chopra Global). I can analyze a person's mind and body constitution and determine what kind of imbalance they have, that might be different from their original constitution. Then, I can adjust their meals based on the cuisine they like and of course what allergies or sensitivities they have.”    Have a listen as I interview my special guest, Natalia Proops. Find out how creating beauty can enhance your life.

This week's show features stories from NHK Japan, France 24, and Radio Havana Cuba. http://youthspeaksout.net/swr240426.mp3 (29:00) From JAPAN- China has been swamped with record breaking rainfall, with extensive flooding and numerous landslides. The chief executive of Tik Tok says that they protect user information and will not sell the application. Satellite photos have revealed tens of thousands of tents Israel has set up in south Gaza to evacuate Palestinian civilians from Rafah before the invasion. From FRANCE- Global military spending has soared to new heights, almost 2 1/2 trillion dollars, with the US accounting for one trillion dollars or 37% of the total. France 24 broadcast 2 long interviews this week that I struggled with choosing only one. The first was from a program called Scoop speaking with Jeremy Scahill from the Intercept on the NYT telling its journalists to limit the use of terms like "genocide" and "ethnic cleansing" and to avoid using the term "occupied territory" in reporting on the war on Palestine- you will hear a short excerpt from that. The other long interview was with Rasheed Khalidi, American historian, and Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University. The topic was that the West was on the wrong side of history for suppressing students in the US and Europe who are demanding a ceasefire in Gaza. He talks about Columbia University's history of student protests, the moral urgency of stopping the war in Gaza, and the problem with the mainstream media echoing the government line. He points out that a large proportion of the protestors are Jewish as are scores of professors who are also protesting. He points out that the Republican Party under Trump is hypocritical, since Trump proclaimed as good people the neo-fascists who marched in Virginia a few years ago chanting "Jews will not replace us." From CUBA- Colombian President Petro, under pressure for promoting universal healthcare, free education, and pensions, will be present at rallies for International Workers Day, on MayDay. Thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched in Madrid last Sunday to oppose arms sales to Israel. A flotilla of ships carrying food and supplies for Palestine is being prepared in Turkey. I feel it's notable that this show approaches it's 13th birthday on the May 9th of this year. In this show, you'll hear an interview with autonomous Marxist historian, Peter Linebaugh on essay collection The Incomplete, True, Authentic and Wonderful History of May Day plus some music we curated at the time. To friends we've met, and to those we have yet to meet, I'd like to wish everyone a happy May Day. As we'll hear in the following hour, this day has a long celebrated history. From its many European pagan roots as a celebration of fertility as the fruits of the spring planting season began to... uh, spring forth. Then on to the repressive winter that fell early on May 3rd and 4th of 1886 in Illinois with, first, the killing of workers striking for an 8 hour work day at the McCormick Works and then the repression of anarchist and socialist workers and organizers following the bombing at Haymarket Square in Chicago of that same year. From there to the taking up of May 1st as International Workers Day by struggling groups around the world and the U.S. adoption of a sanctioned Labor Day in September of the year. To divide an international working class, The U.S. government, oppressors of that May Day 1886 sanctioned a Labor Day to be celebrated in September, declared the first of May both Law Day (an obvious testament to Irony in respect to the Haymarket 8, all jailed and 4 executed) and, for some, it's celebration as Americanism Day. Whatever that means. In 2006 & 2007, immigrants rights marches were seen on and around May Days that, for many, re-sparked the importance of this day. The protests and festivals swelled to numbers nearly unmatched in the history of protest on Turtle Island, and were accompanied by school and work walkouts and boycott days. Whether you're out there today taking direct action, in repose from the horrors of wage slavery, resisting the carceral state, gardening, dancing around a May Pole or otherwise celebrating the possibilities of this year to come when, hell, we might as well end this system of exclusion and extraction: We wish you a fire on your tongue, love in your heart and free land beneath you. .. ... . .. As many countries celebrate International Workers Day on Monday, this episode of The Weekly Tradecast looks at jobs and work with UNCTAD economist Jeronim Capaldo.   With inflation and interest rates high, the risk of a global recession still looms, threatening development. In a recession, workers are often let go as sales drop and companies face pressure to meet margins and repay debts. The impact can depend on things like location, age and skills but there are still wide disparities in opportunities to find work. Even some big tech companies are already laying off staff.  What do tougher times really mean for the future of our jobs? Listen in to Jeronim Capaldo to find out what kind of support workers need and where they can find a bright spot.

To help us better understand the struggle we're in right now for a woman's right to control her own body, we're joined by two guests: Melanie MacLennan works as an addiction doctor here for the New York City health system. Until around 2008, she was an abortion doctor and performed abortions in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Arkansas. She was 18 years old when Roe was decided and is furious about what's happening now. We also hear from journalist and documentary filmmaker Erin Sheridan. Erin has been a contributing writer for The Indypendent since 2018. She covered abortion defense activism when she was based here in New York City. She is currently living in Boise, Idaho where abortion rights are dire threat. In the second half of the show, we pivot to Cuba, where co-host and Indy Associate Editor Amba Guerguerian just traveled with a brigade of journalists, who were present at the International Workers Day parade in Havana.
