Click to read the show notes. The United States has never really seen an industry develop out of thin air the way the hemp industry has. Illegal and listed as a dangerous drug only six months ago and now poised to disrupt industries and institutions across the board, hemp has had an incredible journey. Author Jen Hobbs chronicles the history of hemp in America, why it was made illegal, how it helped win World War II, and where the industry is headed now that it’s been greenlighted for full production. Hobbs' book American Hemp: How Growing Our Newest Cash Crop Can Improve Our Health, Clean Our Environment, and Slow Climate Change is a positive story about a crop that can create jobs, clean the soil, make us healthier, and capture carbon from the atmosphere. The book also offers an interesting chapter on why "the EPA is not your friend." Episode 40. Sign up for Jen Hobbs' American Hemp blog: https://americanhemp.substack.com

If there ever was a time to build an American hemp industry, the time is now.In Jesse Ventura’s Marijuana Manifesto, former Minnesota Governor teamed up with Jen Hobbs to explain why it’s time to fully legalize cannabis and end the War on Drugs. Through their research, it became clear that hemp needed its own manifesto. Jen Hobbs takes up this torch in American Hemp.December of 2018 marked a largely unprecedented victory for cannabis. The 2018 Farm Bill passed and with it hemp became legal. What the federal government listed for decades as a schedule 1 narcotic was finally classified as an agricultural crop, giving great promise to the rise of a new American hemp industry. Hemp, a strain of cannabis sativa, has had a long, strange, and storied history in America from being grown by the Founding Fathers to being rendered virtually illegal by the United States government for decades. There was even a state-sponsored effort encouraging farmers to grow hemp to support the U.S.'s efforts in WWII! Now, with the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill Act, hemp is finally receiving its moment in the 21st century. And according to our guest on this edition of Parallax Views it's a moment that's long overdue. Jen Hobbs, author of American Hemp: How Growing Our Newest Cash Crop Can Improve Our, Clean Our Environment, and Slow Climate Change and co-author of Governor Jesse Ventura's The Marijuana Manifesto, joins us to discuss the many utilities of this incredible plant including making us healthier, solving the lead crisis, assuaging the problems arising in the aftermath of major fires like those that have recently ravaged California, and even, she argues, combating climate change! Sound to good to be true? Well, hear Jen out because she may just be able to make you into a believer!
