Girl meets Instagram. And then her childhood – and her life -  are forever altered by the effects of social media. This is what the Surgeon General is telling us. This is what the research is showing us: rising depression, anxiety, eating disorders and suicides. But behind this data, real people are suffering the consequences.Kara Alaimo, communications professor and author of  Over the Influence: Why Social Media is Toxic for Women and Girls – And How We Can Take It Back, has researched social media since 2016. Through her interviews, she's heard countless stories of algorithms leading users from a subtle interest to a dangerous spiral.  Engaging with a workout post led to a feed full of ‘fitspo' content, featuring influencers with unrealistic body standards – which led to body dysmorphia,  disordered eating and lasting mental health struggles.“We grew up with Seventeen Magazine, which also promoted unrealistic beauty standards, but we didn't spend hours a day - every day - looking at it,” Kara explains. It's the combination of toxic content and the time spent that creates actual harm for young girls.Tune in to hear Nicki of Scrolling 2 Death and Kara discuss her research insights and strategies for managing kids' social media use.Kara Alaimo, PhD is a communication professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she created the university's academic programs in social media. Episode 123- Join host Troy Saunders as he chats the vocal powerhouse singer, writer and arranger Jacci McGhee!!Best known for her belted-out duet with Keith Sweat on the hit song of the 1980s, “Make It Last Forever,” Jacci has returned, from a self-admitted dark place, to her passion and gift of singing. Actually, Jacci began her reappearance on the music scene in 2015 with step-out vocals alongside Dominique, on DJ Jay Salter's international EDM hit, “Angel of Mine” (Soul Remix). Once the song took off on the streaming sites, momentum began to build. It continued to escalate with the booking of a modeling job through a chance encounter at a local New York coffee. “The owner of a gourmet popcorn line approached me and asked me if I would do a print ad for him in a food magazine,” she said. “It became my first modeling job.” Afterward, she was a bitten by the acting bug, co-starring in a short film on teen suicide with Marc John Jefferies, the actor best known for film and TV productions: “Power”; “Get Rich or Die Tryin'” and “Losing Isaiah,” to name a fewMcGhee's music career was spawned by her duet with Sweat on the R&B chart-topper “Make It Last Forever” and lead vocals on Salt-N-Pepa's hit “Expression.” Immediately afterward, she was signed to MCA, now Geffen Records, releasing a top 10 R&B single, “It Hurts Me.” With corporate shake-ups, she got lost in the fray. But bounced back as the successor to Sandra St. Victor, taking over as lead vocalist for urban alternative band The Family Stand, on their “Connected” album.Following the dissolution of the band, she steered her vocal talents to opportunities to sing jingles for ad campaigns while raising a family. Her reconnections with DJ Jay Salter resulted in the 2017 Christmas pop single, “Every Day Is A Holiday.”In 2017, the New York native used her vocal and comedic chops to host R&B Live showcases in Charlotte, N.C., and Philadelphia, and later worked alongside Talent The Comedian, in collaborative routines. However, the family took priority. Upon her return to New York, the mother of three took a hiatus from music to immediately step into the role of caregiver for her fourteen-year-old daughter, Madison, who was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes.A woman of great faith, Jacci said it was a spiritual experience that encouraged her to return to singing. “The Most High touched my spirit and told me to move forward and sing again,” she said. That decision resulted in a return collaboration with a friend and former producer, DECLARE. Together, they composed the new single “If This World Were Mine” with an accompanying video, directed by her son, Kamrin, a filmmaker and graduate of the arts from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Her daughter also makes a cameo. In 2022, Jacci released ‘Riches of the World' - a high-octane cautionary pop record with an equally electric music video - in addition to a Remix with legendary hip-hop artist Chubb Rock the following year.In the summer of 2023, the re-release of the expanded edition of Jacci McGhee's self-titled debut album (1992) hit all streaming platforms. Jacci's 2023 single ‘Time and Time' would also go on to chart highly on the UK Amazon charts. A year later, in the summer of 2024, Jacci debuted her latest single 'Slow Down,' produced by Father MC, with music composed by Rockwilder. Her latest single 'No More', produced by Producer Declare, is set to release November 8th. This single paves the way for her forthcoming EP Jacci's Closet, releasing January 2025“I've got butterflies in my stomach because it's all new to me. We also talk about why exploring dreams in therapy is helpful and why therapists are often reluctant to do so. He offers the acronym SAFE which reminds therapists to explore dreams by encouraging clients to Share a dream, Appreciate the details of the dream, Find its significance to the client, and Edit the dream however the client would like. We also talk about Culturally Responsive Dreamwork which involves the therapist starting by finding out how the client already relates to their dreams. In this installment of the Rock is Lit Season 4 Reading Series, Kat Hausler reads an excerpt from her novel ‘What I Know About July' and discusses its creation. The novel centers around indie rocker Simon Kemper, fresh out of rehab and riding the wave of moderate success with his band in Berlin. But lurking in the background is his stalker, a mysterious figure present at every show, sending unsettling postcards to his label and acting as though she owns him. When she suddenly vanishes during one of his performances, Simon becomes the prime suspect. What begins as an attempt to clear his name spirals into a deeper psychological journey, as Simon questions whether her obsession could have truly ended—or if it has merely become entangled in the lives of those closest to him: his bandmates, a new romantic interest, an embittered ex, and the person he thought he had left behind. Narcissistic and insecure, Simon's struggle to become a better person is central to this haunting story. Originally from Virginia, Kat Hausler is a graduate of New York University and holds an M.F.A. in Fiction from Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she was the recipient of a Baumeister Fellowship. Whether it's reading, journaling, enjoying breakfast, or scrolling through social media, these are just a few activities people indulge in while lounging in bed. For some, this has evolved into an art form, popularized by a viral TikTok trend known as “bed rotting.” This habit embodies a laid-back attitude, where productivity and responsibilities are momentarily cast aside in favor of a few minutes or hours of procrastination. Eleanor McGlinchey, a sleep psychologist at Manhattan Therapy Collective and Associate Professor of Psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University, suggests that spending time in bed before starting the day can provide a sense of control over our time and lives. The same concept applies at night: we attempt to reclaim control over our day by lingering in bed before sleep, effectively delaying bedtime. This phenomenon, known as revenge bedtime procrastination, serves as a form of rebellion against our daily responsibilities. But what does this have to do with health? What are the potential problems of bed rotting? Can Bed Rotting Be a Sign of Withdrawal? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! With a Master's in Teaching and Elementary Education from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Danielle has over 18 years of experience in both public and private educational institutions. She founded the London Day School®, a leading preschool recognized for its innovation. Danielle's books, such as “Sofia the Snail,” “Arabelle,” and “Rupert,” feature enchanting characters and rhyming narratives that address everyday challenges faced by children. Her stories, inspired by real-life issues, provide valuable social lessons in an entertaining format. Danielle's holistic approach to education emphasizes academic, social, and emotional development.  Her new book is entitled Parent's Pocket Guide to Surviving the Preschool Years: One Challenge at a Time Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Contact Info Website: www.DanielleLindner.com Book: Parent's Pocket Guide to Surviving the Preschool Years: One Challenge at a Time by Danielle Lindner How Did You Get Started? I always loved writing poetry. I actually did it. For my last three credits in college, I did an independent study on poetry, and I had to write 40 poems. And I just really enjoyed that. But I also really loved kids and working with kids. When I started having my own kids, you know, they were always afraid of the dark, and I thought about how I could explain to them in a really simple, easy, and fun way that they're safe and that the things they're seeing are not scary. So I wrote this poem, basically about Sophia, this little snail who's afraid to go into her shell because it's dark in there, so she doesn't want to go to sleep. Then, after I opened my preschool and realized that, wow, there are a lot of kids who are struggling with this, I thought, let me try and self-publish it and get a book and use it as part of a curriculum in our school. What is Socratic Questioning? I encourage kids to be divergent thinkers by asking questions without yes or no answers, opening their minds. For example, I might have a brown bag with a rubber band inside during circle time. I'll ask the kids to suggest uses for the rubber band other than holding things together. Their creative responses, like making a fishing line, are amazing. I then ask them to explain how they would do that, prompting deeper thinking. This method helps develop their creative thinking and problem-solving skills. The best innovators think outside the box, so I love fostering this in young kids. Bullying Story I believe that bullies are often kids who don't feel good about themselves. Feeling good about yourself includes feeling comfortable in your own skin and being able to self-regulate and calm down. If more schools practiced mindfulness from an early age through high school, kids would manage their feelings better, and much of the bullying would decrease. My daughter attended a public high school before switching to a private one, where meditation and mindfulness were required courses. This changed the entire school day and improved conflict resolution skills. We incorporate mindfulness into our preschool gym program starting at 18 months. Waiting until adulthood to discover mindfulness, as I did in my 40s, is a disservice. It should be part of the curriculum. Fox News is regularly criticised for being sensationalist, full of conspiracies and obsessed with Trump. But, what's it like if you really watch it for hours on end? Jacob Jarvis did just that and he talked to Dan Cassino, a political scientist at Fairleigh Dickinson University and author of: Fox News and American Politics: How One Channel Shapes American Politics and Society, about what he saw. What is the channel, which has been America's most watched cable news station for twenty years, really all about?      • “What's happened over the years to Fox News is it's turned into something akin to a celebrity gossip magazine.” – Dan Cassino  • “If you come to the US Fox News is on wherever you are and that's how it's meant to be consumed… with about 30% of your brain.” – Dan Cassino  • “We're still living in the world that Fox News Created.” – Dan Cassino    We are sponsored by Indeed.
