One day, Lisa was at home in Austin, TX, doing normal things--when the phone rang. She learned her 23 yr old son was killed in a car crash. And her world changed forever.Lisa tells the story of her transformation through grief, how she organized a celebration of her son's life to which hundreds of people came, she wrote a book called Guided by Grief, and she runs seminars all over the US to help people get to the other side of grief with themselves intact to live the best version of themselves. To live my best version, I have tapped into blinkist.com. I'm getting a burst of micro learning from over 3000 books in their non fiction library. My favorites have been Super Thinking by Gabe Weinber and Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neal Postman. Meet this episode’s guest, author of Guided by Grief/Guided by Now— Lisa Bovee: Badass Author. Speaker. Mama. MiMi. Friend. Human. When Lisa's son Conner died in a tragic car accident, she was running a successful freelance writing, editing, and book publishing business. After her loss, in an attempt to regain her footing, she began to search for grief writings that might help her. She wanted stories that sounded like hers, something that would offer guidance, inspiration, and encouragement and also a way to honor her son. None of what she found truly spoke to her heart. More importantly, when she connected with others, she heard the same sentiments about the gap in grief narratives. That’s how Guided by Grief & Guided by Now the Vision, the Mission, the Movement (and the book) were all born. Lisa has been Guided by Grief to repurpose her life and to share her story and help others do the same -- together we are changing the conversation about grief from private, ugly & uncomfortable to OPEN, NORMAL & SUPPORTIVE. Her book Guided by Grief: Always Remember is combination memoir, self-help and compilation. It’s real and raw with surprising injections of humor. Her talks about life, hope, and happiness after loss, are encouraging, sometimes funny, and always inspirational. She confirms that you are NOT doing grief wrong and helps you to realize there can be joy after loss. Lisa was Guided by Grief, but she wants you to be Guided by Now. Almost a year ago, Lisa lost her youngest child (of three), her only son (22-years-old) to a tragic car accident. He was the most incredible combination of compassion, talent, and intellect. He was a very talented self-taught musician. He played the guitar, piano, violin, Ukulele, drums -- pretty much whatever he could get his hands on, he would learn to play. He was also a super nerd and a self-taught programmer! Through these self-taught skills he went through an intensive advanced programmers course, and, even before finishing, landed an amazing job at The University of Texas in Austin developing software for the Center for Space Research. Lisa aims to use her skills, knowledge, and passion as a writer and an editor to help others and to build a legacy. She's helped many across industries write and edit but also helped clients realize their own dreams of finishing, publishing and selling their own books.
