And as we make Transformers out of paper, we also bring up… drawing comic books, the Wikipedians don’t like to change their mind, Black Panther, Time's Up, all the animals in the book of mammals, at the basketball game, what’s the first song on the second side, attention is the currency today… everyone is fighting for it… and that makes it that much more precious, supporting your local bands, observe my own thoughts and emotional reactions to things, we would just press record on a boombox, the changing music scene, it shows that art makes a difference, galvanizing rallying energy, hand cut by me and my scissors, the cumulative effect did something that was transformative, kids recording at home, it was fun to go to Kinko’s and try to make your CD cover, it began as a lie, I heard you when I was eleven, what’s the last song on the first side, creating an emotional experience for people, Madonna’s butt, you look at your phone and just swipe away, transformation has to be visceral to really make an impact, selling tapes at a barbeque, creating a sense of spectacle or wonder or fascination and we did an entire cassette that way. “Yeah, that’s what fuels our songs. We were trying to speak to the world that we’re living in. Where were you in September 2012? We were fumbling through the Flobots' last album, The Circle in the Square. And now, after many moons, we're tackling them again, hopefully with steadier hands and heads. Jonny 5, Brer Rabbit, KennyO, and company are back at it, releasing their first album in that timespan, Noenemies. We'll discuss the current state of Flobots, the new album and its content, while touching briefly on "having your back against the wall" so to speak---confronting the 'thens' and 'nows' of critical consideration. The members of Pan Astral have stayed busy since they visited the CPR Performance Studio last year. The Denver band has recruited a new drummer and written some new material. Frontman Gabriel Otto produced the politically charged "NOENEMIES" album from fellow Coloradoans Flobots -- which also features contributions from guitarist Tad Lusk. Pan Astral returned to our studio before a show at Denver's Walnut Room to play a few songs from its catalog. The band members also spoke with Alisha Sweeney about retooling its lineup, working with Flobots and incorporating live projections into their concerts.
Flobots recently returned to the CPR Performance Studio to preview some new music from their forthcoming album "NOENEMIES." The Denver hip-hop band explores the power of protest music on the new record. It features call-and-response choruses written to empower protesters and performed by members of the Denver community. The band performed three songs in the studio, backed by Denver gospel group Spirit Of Grace.
Denver Mayor Michael Hancock realizes a dream with launch of the airport train but faces issues including community-police relations and homelessness. Plus, hip hop group the Flobots includes community voices in its new album "NOENEMIES." And, Mona Awad's debut novel "13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl," explores women's weight issues. Then, citizens write sassy signs to discourage distracted driving.
Justin sits with none other than Stephen "Brer Rabbit" of Flobots. They speak at length about activism, art, community, books, and music. It's an energized and emotional discussion.
