He is, as thus poured out, a 'Spirit of supplications;' that is, of prayer for grace and mercy. The word is formed from chen, as the other was — to be gracious or merciful. And expressing our act towards God, it is prayer for grace — a supplication; and it is never used except to express vocal prayer, either in the assemblies of the people of God or by private persons.

Click here for more on this topic and other free resources - https://www.drjimrichards.com Experiencing the Spirit of Grace Over the last fifty years, there has been a remarkable resurgence in preaching and teaching about God's grace. Sadly, like so many biblical doctrines, grace has often become something people talk about—but seldom experience. I've witnessed some of the most irrational arguments over subtle doctrinal points about grace. Ironically, the behavior of those arguing usually reveals that, while they may have the right information about grace, they are not living in the power of grace! Rarely do we hear people talk about how grace is actively transforming their lives—making them more stable in their walk with God, bolder in sharing their faith, more loving, kind, and patient. What's even more troubling is that, for many, the message of grace has not softened their hearts—it has hardened them. Instead of becoming more compassionate and understanding, they've become more critical and less patient with those who do not embrace their doctrinal position. We are all given the gift of God's grace when we are born again, but that doesn't mean we've truly received it—that is, taken hold of it by faith. Until we do, grace remains only a doctrine we can discuss, not a power that changes our lives! Grace is one of the great distinctions between the Old and New Covenants. The Old Covenant describes righteousness, love, ethics, and morality—but it didn't give us the power to live them. But the grace of God makes us able! It is the power, strength, capacity, and ability that works from our hearts! The Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of Grace, revealing that grace is more than an impersonal power. It is a manifestation of the person and power of the Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit is not only our Counselor and Teacher—He is our strength. He manifests Himself within us, empowering us to live, function, and walk fully in the life of God. Join me this week as we move beyond mere discussion—into the living, transforming power of God's grace! The Kingdom of God is not in word, but in power (1 Cor 4:20). If we only talk about grace but are not experiencing the power of grace, it is mere doctrine, not life!!

It's impossible to separate the Holy Spirit from the Gospel of Grace. Unlike the long lists of rules and regulations that administered the law, the Spirit now administers this new covenant and governs the believer in love. The focus has shifted from Old-Testament rules to New-Testament faith; God's commandments are no longer carved in stone but now written in our hearts. Letting Him guide and direct us is a sign of spiritual maturity. At a glance, Spirit of Grace church in Beaverton might appear to be just one of many progressive Protestant churches, not unusual in the Pacific Northwest. Its website and featured introduction video emphasizes that all are welcome, with an emphasis on LGBTQ people of faith who may not have been welcomed in other religious faiths - and even people who may be questioning their beliefs. But read the fine print or attend a service and both the Catholic and Lutheran theology that defines the church becomes clear. Until the mid-1980s, the congregation was Lutheran, but out of an attempt to shore up dwindling finances, the church began sharing its physical space with members of a Catholic church. Eventually what developed was one congregation that gathered each Sunday and was led by both a visiting Catholic priest and a Lutheran pastor. But in December of 2023, for the first time, the Portland Archdiocese barred Roman Catholic priests from any further participation at Spirit of Grace - and ordered any Catholics in the congregation to leave. But they stayed, choosing to keep their model, and instead of inviting visiting Roman Catholic priests, they called Rev. Vinci Halbrook-Paterson to lead. She had been serving on staff, but in the wake of the Archdiocese's decision, chose to be ordained by Roman Catholic Women Priests in May 2025. Halbrook-Paterson now co-leads the church and alternates leading services on Sundays with Lutheran pastor Robyn Hartwig. It is thought to be the only such Lutheran-Catholic congregation in the country.
