With Halloween coming up tomorrow, we're thinking about everything that goes bump in the night. But the importance of Denver's nighttime economy far exceeds the one-night-only, trick-treat trading that'll be going down tomorrow evening. For years our nightlife has been both a big business and the scene of high-profile violence — particularly around let-out time late at night in LoDo. Youth on Record co-founder Stephen Brackett saw the nightlife conundrum first-hand coming up in Denver's music scene — then he picked up some innovative ideas while touring the world with his band Flobots. Now he's bringing it all together with ONE Denver (formerly 87 Foundation), a new non-profit working to create a safer (and more profitable) nightlife scene for everyone. Host Bree Davies sat down with Brackett a few months ago inside ONE Denver's HQ, aka the old El Chapultepec to learn more. For the latest on Brackett's quest to create a formal Office of Nighttime Economy, Westword recently reported on the name change and Brackett's experience on Mayor Johnston's transition committee for arts & venues. Denver's LoDo neighborhood has long been a magnet for nighttime revelry, with its concentration of restaurants, breweries, shops, and nightclubs. But the area has also become known as a hotspot for trouble and occasional crime — especially late at night when the bars let out, spilling thousands of patrons into the streets with nowhere to go. Is it possible to foster a safer nightlife scene while keeping downtown's party vibe? Host Bree Davies sits down with Stephen Brackett, co-founder of Flobots and Youth on Record, to talk about his new foundation, what's next for the old El Chapultepec spot, and how Denver can re-envision its nighttime scene. Welcome to Musicians Tip Jar where we talk about musicians and money. Where we stay fresh by posting about money's power to make your music stronger. I'm your host Chris Webb joined by my co-host, the guy that swears by Fans-only for musicians, Dave Tamkin. One Hit Thunder producer Matt Kelly has brought up the band Flobots on several occasions on the show, so it was only right that an entire episode was finally dedicated to their 2008 single “Handlebars”. What lyrically starts as basically “look ma, no hands!” turns into an epic commentary on power, corruption, and militarism. Today, we'll dive even deeper into Flobots, and we'll decide if we jumped the gun with the “one hit wonder” tag on a band that might still lead the nation with a microphone. This episode is a re-release of an interview that I did with a great friend, Adam Fallik. Adam passed away in his sleep on Tuesday morning, the 2nd of November, 2021. Adam was a Son, A Brother, an Uncle, a partner, a teacher, a friend, a drummer, and so much more. He was an epic human with a heart big enough to fit everyone in, and then some. I travelled back to Fort Collins, Colorado to be there for everything throughout this last week. There was community, celebration, mourning, sadness, comfort, love and so much more. Adam loved people, and people loved him, which you could clearly see as his procession through Old Town Fort Collins made noise, made music, and howled it's way from place to place. Adam was my first interview on this podcast, Episode 1, way back in January of 2020. I thought I'd re-release his interview, and then add on this interview with his band Wasteland Hop from this summer. Wasteland played a show with the Flobots and The Burroughs at the Mishawaka Amphitheater July 3rd, 2021. After soundcheck and before the show we recorded this little interview on the road next to our camp on the Poudre river. The recording isn't perfect, the voices are a little quiet, you can hear the river (Which is pretty cool actually), there's some other background noise, and a little interruption. Se la vie. This interview clip is a nice little snapshot of what it was like being with the whole band as a group on tour or before a show, and this is one main ways I got to know Adam so well. Adam loved playing music as the drummer with the band. You can feel it here in this interview. As a side note, we are raising money to help make this as easy as possible for Adam's girlfriend through this experience. If you'd like to donate, please visit https://givebutter.com/DBMSIQ?fbclid=IwAR3sGuJ-uANuLTQj8jv_3UMbJpRn37FATxTa1sGVzz7q5vFFRQpmt4pl0jU We will be collecting donations through Monday, November 15th. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/c-taylor-gallegos/support

Our next story comes from a self-described blerd—"black nerd"—our dear friend Stephen Brackett. As a lyricist, poet, activist, member of The Flobots, founder of Youth on Record, and Colorado's Music Ambassador, Stephen has long used his intelligence and powerful writing to draw attention to the causes he believes in. In this story, however, he recounts a few times when his physicality and athleticism were put in the spotlight instead. Stephen told this story live to a virtual audience on 17 March 2021; the theme of the show was "Rebound." Special thanks to Jobless for this episode's outro music! Colorado Music Ambassador and Flobots emcee/lead singer Stephen Brackett talks about music as a tool for liberation, working with young people through his nonprofit Youth On Record and the state of music in Colorado with CCO Director of Marketing and Communications (and longtime friend) Gail Bransteitter. From the halls of George Washington High School to leadership of the Colorado arts world, Stephen and Gail have both been dedicated advocates and artists making a difference in our community for decades. Learn more about the Colorado Music Ambassador position and the word of both Stephen and previous Colorado Music Ambassador Shawn King of DeVotchKa. Stephen co-founded the rap/rock experimental band, the Flobots, nationally known for songs like “Handlebars” and “Rise” and their focus on social and political consciousness. Check out their music and mission at flobots.com. Watch for new songs dropping every three weeks in 2021! The Flobots created the Denver nonprofit Youth on Record offering for-credit music classes in music production, poetry and ethnic studies during the school day in high schools and middle schools. Stephen sat on the board for about ten years, acted as board chair for two and stepped off the board to become Director of Special Programs last year. During the interview he mentions the Denver Children’s Home, learn more at www.denverchildrenshome.org. Youth On Record offers free and open to the public, virtual programming five days out of the week. Explore their offerings and sign up at www.youthonrecord.org. About Youth On Record, Stephen says: “What started as an attempt of a band to do more than just soapbox but to actually live our lyrics and create pathways to challenging the power and agency that our songs were about, it actually grew into something that far exceeded our expectations. It has been the best contribution that could have come out of my musical career...That is the thing I’m most proud of.” “We’re using (music classes) as a delivery method for liberation. We’re not teaching music classes for music’s sake, we are teaching music classes so that during the school day, these students have the opportunity to speak their world, their perspective, their view, and to do so with the excellence that the arts kind of require of you.” “When you’re battling perfection, that means that you never win, but the grit that you earn in trying to meet the impossible gives you a kind of resilience that you can then leverage against the rest of your academic day. That’s what I believe when I’m talking about how music can be a great medium for liberation and a great leverage point for somebody becoming a life-long learner.” Stephen has been all over the news in Colorado for more than a year! Stephen on his influences: “My influences right now are any of the students who are bold enough to get on stage during the talent show. When I see young creatives doing things when they haven’t learned the rules yet, and the kinda stuff they come out with when they are unafraid, is always a humbling lesson for me.” A list of local artists we should know about from Stephen: Adam Stone, formally Indestructible North, now performs as Lucy (music and visual arts) Kayla Marque, singer/songwriter Joseph Lamar, singer/songwriter/producer of various mediums Buntport Theater, self-described as “a wee group of theater-making humans based in Denver. We’ve worked together for over 18 years, making new stuff.* We work collaboratively—without ‘official’ writers, directors, designers, janitors. We do all the stuff. Because we love it.” Rodney Mullen, Colorado Country Hall of Fame The Downy Sisters, “dynamite songwriters” Suzi Q. Smith is an award-winning artist, activist and educator who lives in Denver, Colorado. Her background is in opera! Matthew Roads : Tropidelic Matthew Roads is a singer songwriter of the Cleveland based band Tropidelic. “Every single second is a blessing if you count them all,” sings frontman Matthew Roads. You can hear the sincerity in his voice; the joie de vivre that oozes from everything Tropidelic does is apparent. When they take a stage, their synergy flows member to member – horns blow, knees kicked high and grins are passed from one man to the next. Almost immediately, it spreads to the crowd, lifting hands in the air as their feet begin to move. The pulse collectively becomes that of one. The six-piece band from Cleveland, Ohio may be far from any tropical islands, but that doesn’t stop them from dishing out an interesting mix of reggae, hip-hop, and high energy funk for audiences across the country. Unapologetically original, Tropidelic has a deep and widespread appreciation for music that can be heard in each note. Some of the members are hip-hop heads, while others are into metal, funk or reggae. Each of these genres lends something to their collective sound. “We pride ourselves in being original in our musicality and personality as a band,” says Roads, “but also in not taking ourselves so seriously that it ruins the fun.” Quickly elevating themselves in the live circuit, Tropidelic can be found spreading their soulful sound across the country in both intimate venues and music festivals, having shared the stage with and supported such acts as 311, Slightly Stoopid, The Dirty Heads, Pepper, The Flobots and Wookiefoot. Previously, Tropidelic has been featured at Electric Forest, California Roots Music & Art Festival, Reggae Rise Up, Warped Tour and 311 Caribbean Cruise, as well as the host of their own annual Freakstomp Music Festival. Following on the success of their 2019 release, Here in the Heights, which debuted at #2 on the Billboard reggae charts, Tropidelic has released a series of impressive singles featuring guest appearances from Dirty Heads, Matisyahu, Devin the Dude and Shwayze. These singles have amassed over five million streams in 2020, and they are featured on their latest album, Of Illusion, which debuted on November 13th, 2020. Of Illusion was released on Billboard’s number one reggae label, Ineffable Records. Tropidelic has put in their ten thousand hours, and they have arrived on the national scene to the delight of their ever growing and rapturous fans. We’ve been hard at work writing and recording some new songs. Due to the covid pandemic we had to approach making music in some different ways and it’s actually been pretty fun to experiment with different sounds and work with different producers. We wrote a song called “We Win The Day”, and although it is still not in it’s completed form we thought we would put it up on a couple of our platforms to celebrate this small win in the ongoing fight for change in the world. Sometimes making it to the end of the day can be a win. Produced and written by: Joe Shull and Flobots
