A few weeks ago, I did an exercise that completely changed how I see control—and honestly, it pissed me off before it set me free. I drew a circle and listed what I actually control inside it and what I don't outside it, and the truth was brutal: I've been spending most of my energy trying to manage things that were never mine to hold. Today I'm walking you through this exercise and the new soundtracks that are helping me release my grip on other people, outcomes, the past, and the future—so I can finally be present in the one moment I actually have. https://www.instagram.com/nicole_bachle/

Pastor Shay Osborne explains how every believer has both box ministries (within the church) and circle ministries (their personal circles of influence where they live, work, and play). Using John 1 as a model, he shows how ordinary people—like Andrew bringing Peter to Jesus—can impact lives by simply sharing faith within their circles. We are challenged to move from the sidelines into the game, living out the mission daily.

This is Week 5 of our series Circles, where we're learning how God's Word guides us in strengthening the relational circles in our lives. This series isn't just about building better relationships—it's about divine realignments. God is repositioning some of us for greater impact and deeper joy, helping us step into His chosen connections that will change our life's course.Last week, we explored our inner circle and our relationship with God—the foundation of everything. Today, we dive into the outer circle—the people outside our immediate circle, those who feel different or even uncomfortable to us. These are our neighbors, co-workers, people at the store, even those we might ignore or block on social media. The question is: how do we relate to them? Our key verse is Colossians 4:5-6:"Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone."Why do outsiders matter?Because they matter to God. They are loved by Him, and many are in our lives for a reason. Just like the early Christians in Colossae—who faced hostility, rejection, and persecution—they refused to retreat or water down their faith. Instead, they made a difference by living intentionally and boldly. In a culture filled with division and deception, they stood firm, refusing to compromise. They knew Christ and carried His presence into the outside world, fulfilling the Great Commission: "Go and preach the Gospel to all nations." Their lives weren't just about getting by—they were about making an impact. Our faith was never meant to be hidden. Remember, light doesn't need permission to shine—darkness cannot overcome it. The resistance you encounter may be a sign that you're on the right track.Loving the outsiders means being wise in our manner, our moment, and our message:Wisdom in our manner:Mind your words — be gracious, kind, and respectful. Jesus said, "Let your words always be full of grace and seasoned with salt." Our words should preserve, heal, and attract others to Christ, not offend or push away. We're called to be witty, engaging, and loving—never abrasive or rude.Wisdom in our moment:Seize divine appointments. Be proactive in noticing opportunities God puts in your path. Whether it's a new neighbor, a co-worker, or a cashier at the store—these moments are orchestrated by God for meaningful connections. Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit's lead and respond in faith.Wisdom in our message:Always be ready to share the hope you have. Your story, your church, your faith—these can be powerful bridges. Share the Gospel confidently, using words that are honest, compassionate, and truthful. Remember, our goal is to win hearts, not arguments.Love and truth go hand in hand. Grace without truth is meaningless. Truth without grace is harsh. Together, they bring healing and transformation.Ask yourself:Are my actions and words drawing people closer to Jesus, or pushing them away?Be intentional. Be wise. Make the most of every divine opportunity.Because, ultimately, guiding others to Christ is the heartbeat of our faith. Let's step out boldly, shining His light into the outer circle with wisdom, love, and grace. Are you ready?

When does comedy become more than a laugh? Ben Mangrum of MIT joins RtB to discuss his new book, The Comedy of Computation: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Obsolescence (Stanford UP, 2025), which in some ways is organized around “the intriguing idea that human knowledge work is our definitive feature and yet the machines we are ourselves made are going to replace us at it.” Comedy has provided a toolbox (Charles Tilly calls them "collective repertoires") for responding to the looming obsolescence of knowledge workers.John's interest in Menippean satire within science fiction leads him to ask about about the sliding meanings of comedy and its pachinko machine capacity; he loves the way Ben uses the word and concept of doubling,; Ben explains how the computer may either queer (in an antisocial way) or get assimilated into romantic heteronormative pairings. John asks about Donna Haraway's 1985 A Cyborg Manifesto and teh way it denaturalizes gender roles and the way new technological affordances (from the Acheulean axe that Malafouris discusses to the Apple watch) redefine human roles. Ben delves into the minstrelsy pre-history of the photo-robots going as far back as the late 19th century. They unpack the distinctively American Leo Marxian optimism of The Machine in the Garden (1964) that spreads back as far as the proto-robots like The Steam Man of the Prairies(1868) and good old Tik-Tok in the Wizard of Oz novels. John asks about double-edged nature of Ben's claim that comic “genericity provides forms for making a computationally mediated social world seem more habitable, even as it also provides Is for criticizing and objecting to that world." First you get description says Ben--and then sometimes critique. John asks about the iterability of the new: how much of what seems new actually New New (in the sense of that great 1999 Michael Lewis book, The New New Thing)? Mentioned in the episode: The Desk Set a play William Marchand and a movie starring Katherine Hepburn. How might a computer be incorporated into the sociability of a couple? Her (Spike Jonze,, 2013) computer meets human makes the rom-com into a coupling machine. WarGames (1983( ends with Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy (not Ione Skye—silly John!) paired. But also with Broderick and the formerly deadly computer settling down to “how about a nice game of chess”? Black Mirror as the 2020's version of the same dark satire as the 1950's Twilight Zone. John asks about Stanislaw Lem's Cyberiad, and the comic coupling of Kirk and Spock and the death-as-computer comedy of Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1979). Leo Marx, The Machine in the Garden (1964). Dave Eggers: the joke structure as critique in The Circle and The Every. Episode 1554: Shut It Down
You are already a channel. The question is: how is your transmission showing up, and are you being cared for so it can flow? In this episode Mellissa unpacks what it means to be a transmitter (and a double transmitter), why your gift can feel invisible in modern culture, and how a transmitter's sensitive emanation actually benefits whole communities when it's nurtured. If you've ever felt like people want to “sit next to you” and soak up your vibe without understanding your value, this one's for you. Mellissa offers practical, tender reframing (and a little business-savvy advice) for how transmitters can create their own “temple”: a life + practice that feeds them so their signal stays clear. You'll leave reminded that: ✨ Your transmission is real even if it's not easily measured. ✨ Sensitivity is part of the tool, not a flaw. ✨ You can design a system that both protects your energy and allows you to be resourced for the work you do. If this episode landed: share it with another sensitive transmitter, and consider leaving a review, it helps the right people find these teachings. More Resources:

On this encore of episode 454 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Maria Smilios, the author of The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis. In the course of their conversation, Keith and Ms Smilios discuss how numerous Black nurses fled the Jim Crow south in search of opportunity in the non-segregated north, and how many ended up working at Sea View Hospital on Staten Island, a facility focused on the treatment — and to a large extent the warehousing — of thousands of TB patients. Listeners may be shocked to learn that the American Nurses Association barred Black nurses from being members until they gave in to pressure in 1949, despite Black nurses' impressive contributions to the development of the profession. A native of New York City, Ms. Smilios holds a Masters of Arts from Boston University in Religion & Literature where she was a Henry Luce Scholar and a Presidential Scholar. She also taught Essay and Research writing in the university's writing program. In 2007, she left Boston and moved back to New York City to teach at an all-girls high school. There she created and ran an intensive summer writing program for teens. Maria formerly worked as a development editor in the Biomedical Sciences editing books in lung diseases, pediatric and breast cancer, neurology, and ocular diseases. It was during this time when she read a line in a book that led her to discover the story of the Black Angels. Through writing the book, she has become in involved in advocating for affordable and accessible TB drugs in TB-heavy countries, working with and supporting organizations such as EndTB and Partners in Health. In the past, Ms. Smilios has written for The Guardian, American Nurse, Narratively, The Rumpus, Dame Magazine, and The Forward among others. The Black Angels is her first book. If you want to know what goes into courtroom decision-making when the pressure is on, you'll want to hear this one.Welcome back to Lawyer Talk! I'm Steve Palmer, and in this episode, I'm giving you an inside look at a recent trial I just finished—one that didn't have a jury. Instead, my client and I made the tough decision to waive his right to a jury trial, choosing to have a judge decide his fate. I'll walk you through exactly why I rarely take cases in front of just a judge, what made this case unique, and the careful reasoning behind our strategy—especially when there are tricky legal technicalities involved. I'll also share some thoughts on what it really means to get a fair trial, whether it's with a jury or a judge. Three key takeaways:Strategic Choice Matters: Opting for a bench (judge-only) trial can be the right path when a case hinges on a nuanced, technical legal issue that a jury might not fully grasp.Deep Client Collaboration: The decision isn't made lightly. It involves honest conversations about risks, pros, and cons, making sure the client is 100% involved all the way.Presentation Still Counts: While the theatrics are toned down for a judge, it's crucial to present evidence clearly and treat the judge as the "fact finder"—advocating with the same intensity as if speaking to a jury.Got a question you want answered on the podcast? The Circle: What is Metanoia? Why Don't You Change Your Life? In this lively, fun, and hopefully insightful podcast episode, I'm back with Will Franchot and Jacob Denson. We discuss the current polarization in the culture. The truth that's deeper than words. Is reincarnation a real thing? Multidimensionality. Can we enter Heaven right now and not after we die? What creates true healing? Why is there evil? Does Christ transcend Christianity? Is Hell temporal or eternal? What is metanoia? Why won't people make positive changes in their life? Why mindfulness practices are so helpful. The power of forgiveness and faith. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/6wbClU467Fg
This week's conversation on The You-est You® Podcast feels especially close to my heart. I sat down with Emily Perry, Director of the Circle of Atonement and host of the Exploring A Course in Miracles podcast, to dive into the timeless wisdom of A Course in Miracles. We talked about true forgiveness, healing, and what it really means to view upsets, resentments, and grievances through the lens of love. Emily shared how the Course invites us to see attacks not as personal offenses, but as calls for love — a shift that changes everything. If you've ever felt the weight of judgment or the challenge of forgiveness in your life, I think you'll find this episode to be both healing and deeply inspiring.
On this episode of Lawyer Talk, I'm going off the record and on the air to answer the many questions I've been getting about the Tyler Robinson case, which is making headlines for its connection to the Charlie Kirk assassination. I'll be clearing up some misunderstandings about the evidence—especially when it comes to fingerprints and DNA—and giving you a clearer picture of what the legal process looks like from here. I'll also share my take on what it's really like to defend someone in a high-profile case like this, from dealing with the media circus to the practical challenges lawyers face behind the scenes. Top Takeaways:Evidence Scrutiny is Critical:Defense attorneys always start by dissecting the prosecution's evidence—including DNA, fingerprints, and the context surrounding them. As Steve notes, just because certain evidence is cited in a probable cause affidavit doesn't make the case airtight; robust discovery and expert analysis are essential.Taking on Death Penalty Defense is a Massive Undertaking:These cases can last well over a year and consume significant resources. Most are handled by private lawyers appointed (and underpaid) by the state, not full-time public defenders, which can impact their own legal practices.Expertise and Resources Make or Break the Case:Successfully defending a death penalty case often requires applying for court-approved experts in forensics, cell phone data, and beyond. The responsibility is immense—not only for the client, but for the integrity of the justice process.Got a question you want answered on the podcast? Call 614-859-2119 and leave us a voicemail. Over the past few years, I've heard several people suggest that "blogging is dead." However, one of my favorite coaching clients earns her primary income from her blog and also hosts retreats and an annual conference for an entire community of food bloggers who earn an income from their blogging efforts. So I invited my client, Megan Porta, and asked her the question, "Can you still make money blogging in 2025?" Short answer: Yes. It's doable. It looks different than it did a decade ago. It requires real passion, patience, and a focus on what serves readers right now. Below are thorough show notes to meet you exactly where you are. If you want to start or revive a blog as a real income stream, these notes double as a step-by-step primer. What This Episode Covers Why blogging still pays when you pair patience with passion Megan has seen brand-new bloggers “crushing it.” The difference now is you cannot fake it. Your readers and Google both know when you do. Authenticity wins. The fastest realistic path to first income Join a quality ad network once your traffic qualifies. We name the two big players and their current thresholds. We also discuss why Google SEO and Pinterest are still the two traffic pillars that move the needle. Niching way down to win Broad “everything” blogs struggle today. Specific sub-niches serve specific people and get rewarded. Think “vegan cakes” instead of “vegan.” The love for your topic has to show up in every post. The collaboration playbook for early momentum Smart email list swaps. Contributing value inside the right Facebook groups without spamming. How one helpful post can put a niche creator “on the map” in months. Income beyond ads Digital products. Memberships. Sponsorships. How to think about affiliate income post-HCU and what still works if you are selective. Platform and tech choices that save you pain Why WordPress.org with solid hosting is still the move. Why a VPS and proactive security matter. Real-world cautionary tales about updates, backups, and malware. Key Takeaways and Insights 1) Yes, you can still get paid to blog. The bar is higher. If you bring patience and genuine expertise, you can absolutely build an income today. People starting in the last year or two are succeeding. The difference is the landscape. Authenticity and user value must drive your strategy. 2) Niche inside the niche Winning examples are laser-specific. Pick a tight segment of a larger category, then become unmistakably helpful to that reader. This is how you break through and build trust. 3) Traffic plan: SEO and Pinterest first To qualify for premium ad networks, prioritize traffic that comes from search and Pinterest. Current thresholds discussed in the episode: Mediavine at roughly 50,000 sessions per month and Raptive at roughly 100,000 pageviews per month. Build to those numbers, then let ad RPMs start compounding. 4) Collaboration without spam Use email list collaborations. Show up consistently inside large, topic-relevant Facebook groups. Earn trust by answering questions with real substance. This moves traffic quickly when your niche is dialed in. 5) Create on-topic, helpful content Google's Helpful Content updates pushed bloggers to stay tightly aligned with user intent. Keep posts on point for your niche. Tangential personal stories and off-topic content dilute perceived expertise and can hurt discoverability. 6) Monetization mix that works in 2025 Display Ads once you hit network thresholds. This becomes semi-passive as your library grows. Digital Products as quick wins: ebooks, guides, weekly prep plans. These are simple to produce and match your audience's immediate needs. Memberships if your audience is invested. Price points in food niches commonly range from about 5 to 20 dollars per month, often for ad-free experiences or exclusive content. Tech options include WordPress setups and hosted communities such as Circle, Skool, Slack, Discord, Mighty Networks, and niche tools like Member Kitchens. Sponsorships when you can articulate your audience's value. Niche reach can beat raw follower counts if you understand a sponsor's acquisition economics and lifetime value. Affiliate Income is trickier after recent updates. It can still work at higher commissions or with premium offers. Treat it as a supplemental play, not your core plan. 7) Stack the tech in your favor Choose WordPress.org for full control, proven SEO flexibility, and extensibility. Invest in good hosting. A VPS with strong uptime guarantees is worth it. Expect to pay roughly 89 to 150 dollars per month for reliability that protects your revenue. Treat security and backups as non-negotiables. Plugins and themes require regular updates. Malware exploits often come from simple neglect. Have a pro who can restore fast. This avoids losing days or weeks or years of content. Practical Playbook Phase 1. Choose a narrow niche and validate demand List ten posts your ideal reader would save today. Ensure all are tightly aligned with one outcome your niche cares about. Keep stories and extras on-topic so Google sees topical authority. Phase 2. Protect the asset Run WordPress.org on a reliable VPS and keep everything updated. Assign backups and security to a pro so you do not risk outages or data loss. Phase 3. Build a traffic engine Publish high-quality posts that answer exact questions your audience asks. Optimize for search and create Pinterest assets for each post. Aim for Mediavine or Raptive thresholds to unlock ad revenue. Phase 4. Accelerate through collaboration Join large, relevant Facebook groups. Contribute substantial answers that stand on their own. Start tasteful email list collaborations for quick, qualified traffic. Phase 5. Layer monetization Add an easy digital product that solves a specific use case. Test a simple membership once engagement is strong. Pitch sponsors when you can quantify your audience's fit and value. About My Guest Megan Porta has been blogging since 2010 and runs Eat Blog Talk, a podcast and community that supports food bloggers who want to grow and monetize.
