David Priess is the chief operating officer of the Lawfare Institute. He is also a former CIA briefer for the Attorney General and the FBI director, and he's the author of "The President's Book of Secrets: The Untold Story of Intelligence Briefings to America's Presidents." The president's daily brief has been in the news of late because of the Russia bounties story and the question of whether President Trump is actually internalizing the intelligence he is given in his daily briefing. Benjamin Wittes spoke with David about the history of the president's daily brief, how different presidents have gotten intelligence information and whether President Trump's behavior in this regard is exceptional or not.

Ryan dropped in on Michael P. Dempsey late last week in New York City. He is a career intelligence official who served as the acting director of national intelligence. From 2014-2017, he served as the deputy director of national intelligence and President Barack Obama’s primary intelligence briefer. After decades of work in the intelligence community, Dempsey is taking a year out of government at the Council on Foreign Relations. And for the first time in years, he is allowed to speak his mind freely (for the most part) about all sorts of things. Naturally, we had to have him on the War on the Rocks podcast. In this episode, Dempsey starts with the story of his career, from his work as a Latin America analyst all the way up to finalizing the President's Daily Brief and, yes, briefing it to the president of the United States. He also walks us through how to understand negotiations in North Korea as well as the ever-worsening civil war in Syria.    Produced by Tre Hester

Ray McGovern is quite frankly one bad motherfucker. He was a CIA analyst from 1963 to 1990 beginning under President John F. Kennedy and lasting until the Presidency of George H. W. Bush.  From 1981 to 1985 he prepared and presented the President's Daily Brief one-on-one to President Ronald Reagan’s most senior national security advisers including then Vice President George H. W. Bush. In 2003 Ray came out of retirement and founded the Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) which analyses and criticises the use of intelligence.  He famously confronted Donald Rumsfeld publicly about lying about W.M.D. and nearly got him to recant his statements.  Ray also protested a speech by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by turning his back onkly to be physically removed, double handcuffed and seriously battered and bruised.  He did this at the spry age of 71. Please join me in welcoming Ray McGovern to London Real.  I consider him a piece of living history and was honoured to be able to speak to him about issues ranging from the Cuban Missile Crisis to the Cold War to Edward Snowden and Julian Assange to the Ukrainian Separatists, Gaza, ISIS and more.
