The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds and Scott Eklund - were at Washington's 13th fall practice early Friday morning, held inside the Dempsey due to rainy skies. With Jedd Fisch and the UW coaches now firmly in 'game week' mode, the practice was more of a one where the Huskies did their work in shoulder pads and shorts, working on cleaning things up and installing more things UW fans can expect to see Saturday night during their second 'mock game' of fall camp. They talked about what they saw on both sides of the line of scrimmage, but three main storylines on offense caught a lot of their attention. The first was the return of Denzel Boston was a focal point, as was the return of another receiver, Dezmen Roebuck, who missed Thursday's practice. The second storyline; how much will Roebuck play this year? Is he a certainly to burn his redshirt? And the other storyline that has certainly developed over the course of fall is the battle at left guard between Paki Finau and John Mills. The redshirt frosh had the job at the end of spring, but the true freshman Mills has continued to just get better and better by the practice to where it's now basically a dead heat between the two. The battle has been at a point now where the coaches alternate series between Finau and Mills with the first team. And an additional subplot; who makes up the full 8-man rotation? The guys feel good about the first six (the four constant starters plus Finau/Mills) but who are shoe-ins for those other two slots? All the competition is simply showing the Huskies are in a great spot heading into Saturday's mock game, even if today's practice was the 13th. And even if it did take place on a Friday. Miskatonic has been a western suburban outpost for great beer with an extremely loyal following for a decade now - and it's due time they get the recognition they deserve. We sit down in Darien with head brewer Cory Davidson and production brewer Mik Dempsey to talk all things Miskatonic, including how they approach brewing such a wide variety of styles with laser-like focus, how branding updates help reflect the beers themselves, what obscure styles they'd like to brew one day, and how they find collaboration partners in both the brewing and music worlds. Also, we talk about contract brewing through their full production brewery, making seltzers for the first time, and both Cory and Mik's picks for their essential Chicagoland six packs.
In this bold and deeply reflective episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty sits down with New York-based attorney and writer Gargi Sen, founder of Unsquashable Girl. Together, they uncover the invisible yet painful layers of familial gaslighting, cultural conditioning in South Asian households, toxic workplaces, and the lifelong impact of childhood emotional abuse. Gargi shares how she overcame these cycles—choosing courage, setting boundaries, and embracing healing with the unexpected support of her dog, Mr. Dempsey. Learn about her viral 3-Column Method to assess emotional safety in relationships and why it's okay to disappoint your family in order to honor yourself. This conversation is a roadmap for anyone ready to stop abandoning themselves and start living free. About the Guest:Gargi Sen is a New York-based attorney, author, and the founder of Unsquashable Girl—a global movement supporting women to break free from toxic relationships, cultural oppression, and generational dysfunction. Her story of resilience includes escaping an abusive upbringing, breaking cultural taboos, and rebuilding self-worth with the help of her dog, Mr. Dempsey. Key Takeaways : Healing begins when you stop seeking approval and start honoring your inner voice. Cultural conditioning in South Asian families often normalizes emotional abuse. Gargi's story powerfully challenges this status quo. Her 3-Column Method—positive, neutral, and negative energy mapping—is a practical and transformative way to assess all relationships (family, friends, workplace). It is okay to disappoint your family if it means preserving your peace and dignity. Animals, like Mr. Dempsey, can be our emotional guides—offering us unconditional love and mirroring what safe connection feels like. Toxic leadership in the workplace often reflects unresolved personal trauma; self-awareness is essential to walk away from dysfunction. The phrase “love shouldn't hurt” is central to Gargi's philosophy. If a relationship repeatedly drains or devalues you—it is not love. Estrangement from family can be an act of self-love and emotional survival, especially when safety is at risk. The weather may not have been conducive to a productive practice, but that's why Washington has an indoor facility. So the Huskies moved inside on Thursday to the Dempsey to take part in Day 7 of fall camp. And while the first part of practice was very quiet and business-like, as soon as the horn sounded for that first team scrimmage period, the intensity went way up, as did the hitting. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - broke down what they saw during a day where both the offense and defense got their licks in during a day where more scrimmaging took place than during the previous days. To start, the guys naturally went to the offensive side of the ball, focusing first on the offensive line. True frosh John Mills is getting more time at the ones and the battle between him and Paki Finau has truly been joined. There was some really good work by the tight ends today, especially USC transfer Kade Eldridge, and with Marcus Harris, Kevin Green, and Raiden Vines-Bright not available there were a couple receivers that really took advantage of their turns, namely Dezmen Roebuck and Justice Williams. After a quick break the guys then focus their attentions toward the defense. And who else could it be but freshman safety Rylon Dillard-Allen? Batman once again made waves by getting into it with another offensive lineman, this time it was Drew Azzopardi, after RDA unceremoniously dumped one of the receivers to the turf. He has shown to play on that razor's edge for a few days now, and even the NFL scouts on hand were paying attention to it. Another defensive back that stood out was NAU transfer Alex McLaughlin, whose day was highlighted by a TFL on Adam Mohammed and a pick where he had to display his cat-quick reflexes to bring in a pass that was wildly deflected to the middle of the field. Michigan transfer Hayden Moore moved from ILB to EDGE during spring and he's really starting to emerge as a player the coaches want a good look at this fall. With Zach Durfee unavailable today for some reason, it allowed Moore even more turns to prove his worth and he's definitely taking advantage of his opportunities. The guys also saw live punting for the first time all camp and they talked a little bit about what they saw from Oregon transfer Luke Dunne, what he's being asked to do by Special Teams Coordinator Chris Petrilli, and how well he pulled it off. Before the guys' final thoughts, Kim talked a bit about hoops, as the men had another media day with Danny Sprinkle, Quimari Peterson, Jacob Ognacevic, and Franck Kepnang. He relayed some of the things Sprinkle talked about (full quotes will be available later tonight), and he also provided a funny anecdote about Peterson and a potential new nickname. In this episode, we talk with Jessica Dempsey and Rosemary Collard about how to think about the capitalist state not as a unified actor, but as a contradictory and often incoherent set of institutions, practices, and relationships that both authorize extraction and seek legitimacy. We explore how environmental governance in Canada is shaped by this contradiction: despite laws and frameworks that are supposed to protect nature, we end up with continued and expanded ecological harm.We also dig into how Jess and Rosemary draw from feminist and abolitionist thought to analyze the state as a supplier of nature to capital, a manager of resistance, and a key player in the reproduction of racial and sexual hierarchies. We touch on patriarchy as an ecological regime, and think through how capitalism can both destroy the conditions of life (cannibalistically) and adapt to ecological collapse (parasitically). The conversation then moves to global environmental politics; why international agreements like the Paris Agreement and the Convention on Biological Diversity must be understood in relation to trade, debt, and tax regimes and what it means to build a political internationalism in response. This is a conversation about the complexity of power and the need to confront it clearly. Jess and Rosemary bring sharp analysis, grounded in struggle, to help us make sense of the terrain we're fighting on.---Jessica Dempsey and Rosemary Collard run the Extinction Paradox research group. Together, they've theorized and investigated how the Canadian state manages the deep contradictions at the heart of environmental governance—passing laws to protect nature while simultaneously enabling capital's ongoing exploitation and destruction of ecosystems. Their feminist critiques of capitalism and the capitalist state unearth dynamics that are often obscured by design. These include how dominant narratives of ecological collapse—even when critical vis-à-vis denialism—often fail to name the structural drivers of crisis, or to acknowledge how racial and sexual hierarchies are central to how ecological harm is organized, justified, and sustained.Jess is professor of Geography at the University of British Columbia, researching the political economies of biodiversity conservation and the contradictions of environmental governance under capitalism. Her work combines Marxist, feminist, and anti-colonial theory to examine how states, corporate, and financial actors navigate the ecological crises they help produce. She is the author of Enterprising Nature, a book that critically explores market-based conservation efforts.Rosemary is professor of Geography at Simon Fraser University, whose work focuses on the intersections of wildlife, capitalism, and the state. She draws from feminist political economy and multispecies studies to explore how wild animals are governed within regimes of extraction and enclosures. Her book, Animal Traffic, traces how wild animals are made into lively capital in the global exotic pet trade. We highly recommend reading both of their books, and to keep an eye out for a book they're working on together now for future publication. In this month's installment of the Book Review Book Club, we're discussing “The Catch,” the debut novel by the poet and memoirist Yrsa Daley-Ward. The book is a psychological thriller that follows semi-estranged twin sisters, Clara and Dempsey, who were babies when their mother was presumed to have drowned in the Thames. The novel begins decades later, when Clara sees something strange: A woman who looks just like their mother is stealing a watch. Clara believes this is her mother, and wants to welcome her back into her life. Dempsey is less certain, in part because the woman doesn't seem to have aged a day. She believes the woman is a con artist because it's simply not possible for her to be their mother … right? What's real? What's not? And what does that mean for the lives of these struggling sisters? Daley-Ward unpacks it all in her deliciously slippery novel. On this episode, the Book Club host MJ Franklin talks about “The Catch” with fellow Book Review editors Jennifer Harlan and Sadie Stein.Other books mentioned in this week's episode:“The Other Black Girl,” by Zakiya Dalila Harris“The Haunting of Hill House,” by Shirley Jackson“Wish Her Safe at Home,” by Stephen Benatar“Erasure,” by Percival Everett “Playworld,” by Adam Ross “The House on the Strand,” by Daphne du Maurier“Grief Is the Thing With Feathers,” by Max Porter“The Furrows,” by Namwali Serpell“Dead in Long Beach, California,” by Venita Blackburn“The Vanishing Half,” by Brit Bennett“Death Takes Me,” by Cristina Rivera Garza“Audition,” by Katie Kitamura Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts and explore everything from politics to pop culture. In Chambers v. Florida and the Criminal Justice Revolution, historian and former ABA Journal reporter Richard Brust lifts the veil on a case that laid the groundwork for some much more famous civil rights victories. On May 13, 1933, shopkeeper Robert Darsey was robbed and murdered in Pompano, Florida. Four Black migrant farm workers—Izell Chambers, Walter Woodard, Jack Williamson and Charlie Davis—were seized and pressured by the local sheriff into confessing to the murder under threat of lynching. Their appeals eventually reached the U.S. Supreme Court through the efforts of some dedicated African American attorneys, and succeeded in 1940. In Justice Hugo Black's written opinion for the majority, the justice drew parallels between the Jim Crow regime in the American South and the rise of authoritarianism and fascism in Europe. Chambers v. Florida forbade the use of psychological coercion—such as threatening to turn prisoners over to lynch mobs—as well as physical abuse to extract confessions. The court's ruling declared that the protections of the Bill of Rights extended into states' criminal cases, and began to change the kinds of cases that made it onto the Supreme Court docket.Brust sees it as part of a trio of cases, which includes Moore v. Dempsey (1923) and Brown v. Mississippi (1936), that led to a “criminal procedure revolution,” he tells the ABA Journal's Lee Rawles. In this episode of The Modern Law Library, Brust discusses the lawyers who worked on the case, most prominently Simuel D. McGill, a Black attorney in Jacksonville. He delves into the generational differences between the Floridian defense lawyers and the attorneys of the NAACP's Legal Defense Fund who would go on to win key civil rights battles. He explains why Justice Black would have been considered an unlikely author for this opinion. And he shares what he could discover about the fates of Chambers, Woodard, Williamson and Davis after the trial.

Mast cell activation syndrome isn't widely recognized, but for many women, it may explain years of pain, fatigue, and hormone related chaos no one could solve.I see a lot of patients who are struggling with fatigue, pain, and hormone symptoms that don't seem to make sense on paper. And I've noticed a pattern but I wanted to talk to someone who lives in the complexity of it every day.Dr. Tania Dempsey, is one of the few physicians who's helped bring mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) into the spotlight. Years ago, she was treating a patient who just wasn't getting better until she stumbled on a paper about mast cells that changed everything. That one article led to a phone call, a new way of thinking, and a career shifting collaboration with one of the leading voices in the field. In this conversation, we explore how MCAS shows up in gynecology especially in cases involving PCOS, perimenopause, and unexplained pelvic pain. We discuss why some patients are unusually sensitive to progesterone, how inflammation fuels insulin resistance, and what's actually going on when mast cells become overactive. We also get into the clinical triad so many of us see MCAS, hypermobility, and POTS and how they often appear together in patients who are struggling to get answers.Tania also talks about how she built her practice by spending more time listening to her patients and trusting that their symptoms meant something, even when the labs didn't show it. Highlights:What mast cells do and how they become overactive in MCAS.The overlooked link between PCOS, perimenopause, and mast cell dysfunction. Why some patients react badly to progesterone—and what to do about it.How GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic may help calm inflammation in MCAS.What to know before seeking a diagnosis or starting treatment. If this episode opened your eyes or gave you language for what you've been going through, please subscribe, leave a review, and drop a comment. Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall.*Inniu an séú lá fiche de mhí Aibreán. Is mise Sibéal Dempsey.Fuair an Pápa Proinsias bás Dé Luain de bharr stróc agus cliseadh croí, tar éis dó a bheith thíos le tinneas riospráide den chuid is mó den bhliain seo. I measc an chomhrá bhí Hegseth, a bhean chéile, a dheartháir agus timpeall dosaen duine eile. Sa chomhrá, tá sé i gceist gur roinn Hegseth sonraí faoi ionsaí na Stát Aontaithe ar reibiliúnaigh Yemeni Houthi an mhí seo caite lena n-áirítear sceidil eitilte, cosúil leis an méid a roinneadh sa chéad chomhrá Signal go poiblí an mhí seo caite. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - break down what they saw from Day Five of UW Spring Football, held Thursday afternoon at the Dempsey Indoor Facility next to Husky Stadium. And it was definitely a day for work in the Dempsey because the weather in Seattle couldn't make up its mind. Half the day was sunny and breezy; the other half was flat-out stormy. The guys talk about their standouts on both sides of the ball, starting with the offense and then moving to the defense. With so many players limited or out, it certainly has given opportunities for the younger players, like true freshmen OL John Mills and Champ Taulealea and true frosh WR Chris Lawson. And on defense there were a number of cornerbacks that didn't participate today, which meant guys like Caleb Presley, Rahshawn Clark, D'Aryhian Clemons and Rylon Dillard-Allen were taking even more first and second team reps than normal. After a quick break Scott talks about three unofficial visitors that were spotted at practice and also hints at some news coming down the pike soon in regards to UW's recruiting efforts. And Kim talks a little bit about today's news regarding the return of shooting guard Wesley Yates to Montlake after a year at USC. Welcome to another episode of "Ask A Gettysburg Guide"! In this installment (#105), we delve into the contributions of Orland Smith's Brigade from the Eleventh Corps during the pivotal Battle of Gettysburg. Join LBG Stu Dempsey as he guides us through the historic grounds that hold so many untold stories. Stu shines a light on the often-overlooked action on historic ground that has since been erased by the Colt Park housing development. This area, now referred to as "Smith's Ridge," was the site where President Richard Nixon's grandfather was mortally wounded, courageously defending our nation against the treasonous Confederacy. Though considered an area where only skirmishing took place, the skirmishing was heavier than normal and the casualty rates show it. Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe to our channel for more captivating insights into Gettysburg's rich history! Breaking the cycle of addiction is both possible and challenging, but even just rethinking your relationship with it can be a powerful first step toward change.Offering an alternative to strict abstinence models is Kristin Dempsey, the author of The Harm Reduction Workbook for Addiction, who invites you to reconsider your approach to addiction, offering a tangible, compassionate, and science-backed method of recovery known as harm reduction. Through reflective listening, motivational interviewing, curiosity, and "change talk," Kristin talks to Michael about just a few of these helpful strategies for reassessing your relationship with addictive substances (and even other areas of your life) and navigating change in a way that feels both supportive and sustainable. Listen and Learn: How harm reduction and motivational interviewing reshape substance use treatment with compassion What changes when someone explores behavior on their own with a workbook versus in live conversation? How can Kristin's workbook also reveal insights about everyday habits and hidden patterns? Why do we resist advice, even when we ask for it, and how can choice unlock real change? How “change talk” in motivational interviewing helps people move from intention to action Using reflective listening to improve your conversations and build stronger, more meaningful connections Can curiosity, not problem-solving, unlock deeper conversations and personal growth?
