“You are not your job title. You are a multi-faceted human” Lizzy Karp is a community activist, connector and ‘baby’ DJ. She spends her days as a Senior Manager at TELUS STORY HIVE and is committed to using story telling as a vehicle for human connection. Matt and Lizzy first connected at ‘Rain City Chronicles’, an event Lizzy cofounded after moving to Vancouver 10 years ago. She had spent alot of time around the music and comedy scenes in Toronto, and had come to realize that she often found people in the audience to be more compelling than the characters on stage. So, in a new city where she knew no one, Lizzy decided to create an experience where everyday people could have the opportunity to share their stories. The goal was to create live story-telling nights that were accessible, inclusive and fun-spirited. “We are all content creators. So that gives us the opportunity to practice visibility. How can we own our story and tell it for people who are watching us, for the people who are listening to this conversation, for the people who need to hear it. That really excites me. On the other hand, when does it become too much? When are we commodifying our own story?” Lizzy reflects with Matt about how people are becoming more critical about who is telling what story, and the importance of reflecting on whose voice isn’t getting heard? And who is getting asked to tell the same story over and over again? Lizzy also helps to produce an annual event called ‘Loaded Bow’ in Palm Springs. ‘Loaded Bow’ is a gathering for self-identified women to come together to learn and to meet one another in a space that is designed for people to truly connect over conversation. It acts as an opportunity for entrepreneurial-spirited women to fill up their soul-points for the rest of the year in an inclusive environment. The program is peer-lead, and removes the conventional hierarchy usually present between speaker and audience, emphasizing the reality that we all have a story to tell and experiences that others can learn from.
