This episode is brought to you by Commerce. For four decades, Ellis Verdi, Founder and President of DeVito/Verdi, has helped shape some of the most talked-about — and often controversial — campaigns in retail advertising. From launching Daffy's with bold, conceptual creative to working with Macy's, Kohl's, Men's Wearhouse and Meijer, Verdi has built a career on one philosophy: tell the truth, even if it ruffles feathers.Retail Remix host Nicole Silberstein sits down with Ellis to discuss what's changed (and what hasn't) about connecting with consumers, the ongoing tension between brand and performance marketing, and why controversy isn't always a bad thing — if it comes from an honest idea.Ellis shares the stories behind some of his favorite campaigns, including the infamous “straightjacket” Duffy's ad that sparked protests, and how ads for Macy's I.N.C. brand and Meijer's private label spinach redefined how retailers communicate value. He also weighs in on recent campaigns — like Levi's x Beyoncé and of course, Sydney Sweeney x American Eagle — that signal a welcome return to upper-funnel brand storytelling.Key Takeaways:Why conceptual advertising still matters in today's performance-driven landscape; How controversy can serve a campaign — when it's rooted in truth; andThe importance of balancing top-of-funnel branding with down-funnel ROI.Related LinksExplore DeVito/Verdi Advertising's creative work and legacyWatch the Macy's I.N.C. ad featuring Heidi KlumWatch the Meijer spinach adRelated reading: The Top 10 Best-Performing Retail Ads from the First Half of 2025Catch up on all episodes of Retail RemixGet more insights from retail industry leaders on Retail TouchPoints -----How to Win Customers Across Every ChannelThis guide from BigCommerce brings you expert insights on data, branding, and marketing to help you grow sales across every major channel. bell hooks såg feminismen som en politisk massrörelse. Send us a textThe stadium door swings open: Bad Bunny is locked for the Super Bowl halftime. We call out the lazy “is he American?” takes (Puerto Rico is U.S. territory), weigh what matters most—energy, staging, collective joy—and toss out dream bookings from Beyoncé to Frank Ocean. And yes, the rap girl civil war gets its map. Cardi vs. Nicki isn't just noise—it's history, catalog, and the one rule that should never be broken: don't talk about kids. We trace it back to “Motorsport,” unpack the latest subs, leaked calls, and mid-tier missiles, and ask the question people dodge: who's really bigger right now—longevity and numbers, or crossover reach and cultural presence? Along the way, JT, Bia, City Girls, Erica Banks, and more step into the frame, while pop plays by rap's rules as Taylor Swift's sharp pen seems to graze Charli XCX. Medvirkende: Otto Olrik & Astrid Olsen. Ekspert: Jytte Vikkelsøe. Vært: Sebastian Lynggaard. Producer: Cæcilie Helena Denman-Gretoft. Should law enforcement employ drones to respond to 911 calls? DPD has already signed a free-trial contract with Flock, but how these drones will actually be used isn't clear. Then, even as restaurants say they are struggling to stay open amid rising costs, labor issues, and concerns about crime, one calzone shop owner on South Broadway has chosen to drastically lower his prices. Producers Paul Karolyi and Olivia Jewell Love are joined by Denverite reporter Kyle Harris to talk about automating law enforcement and a very iconoclastic calzone maker, plus their wins and fails of the week. Tomorrow, call in to our guest-hosting stint on The Jeff & Bill Show. Bree & Paul are on KNUS from 6am to 10am in the morning of Friday the 17th. Call (303) 696-1971 and give us your name and neighborhood! Paul talked about the mayor's latest affordable housing proposal downtown, Beyonce, and Chef Jose Avila's new spot, Malinche Audio Bar. Olivia mentioned Fox31 meteorologist Kylie Bearse's stalking case, Evergreen shooting survivor Matthew Silverstone, and some of Gov. Polis' recent social media posts. Kyle discussed the Pentagon's new press rules. For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter Hey Denver at denver.citycast.fm. We start the episode with a chat about artists that drastically changed their sound over the years – from the Beatles to Cher to Alanis to Herbie Hancock to Bob Dylan to Fleetwood Mac to Beyonce. Speaking of artists that changed their sound, how about the Bee Gees? They started out as a folky pop band and changed their sound to R&B in the mid ‘70s to out and out disco by 1977. We have an excellent 1989 Brad Giffen interview with Barry Gibb as he talks about the groups desire to keep going in spite of the backlash they faced after Saturday Night Fever. It cast a long shadow on them, but they endured by writing hit songs for other artists. Then, we have a really fun chat with Jason Mraz from 2012 and 2014. You get a real sense of who he is - an almost old school hippy vibe that’s really endearing. Plus, some audio from the late ‘70s/early ‘80s with the great George Benson – a jazz giant who had lots of commercial success. He has some great insights as well. And then we chat with one of Christopher’s favourite people – Ian Thomas – who has had a whole string of hit records that Canadians know and love – and some of those songs were covered by the likes of Santana, Manfred Mann and America. Ian is one of the newest inductees into the Canadian songwriters Hall Of Fame – which is coming up on Fri, Oct 17 at the Meridian Centre in Toronto. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster. Bow down, because we're about to cover one of the most powerful, mysterious, and meticulously choreographed cults in modern pop culture: The Cult of Beyoncé. This week, Chelsea is joined by journalist and cultural critic Kathleen Newman Bremang (@kathleennb), to help break down how the Beyhive became less of a fandom and more of a faith. From the Church of Lemonade to the gospel of Renaissance, Beyoncé has crafted not just a career but a belief system, complete with rituals, relics, and sermons that make you cry in formation. But how did one woman become both artist and ideology? And when does admiration turn into devotion? Whether you're a casual listener or a card carrying member of the Hive, this episode unpacks the genius, the grandeur, and the glorious groupthink of pop's most divine following.
