The autumn of 2016 at Reed College was tumultuous. On September 26, students organized a boycott of classes in response to recent police killings of Black people, both to allow time to mourn and to highlight the ways in which they felt Reed was failing people of color. They also put forward a list of demands—including an overhaul of the mandatory freshman humanities course, Humanities 110, which, they alleged, focused too narrowly on European history and ideas, wrongly discounting the contributions of other cultures. That same week, they would begin a year-long occupation of Vollum Hall, where lectures were held, thereby creating fissures among the faculty and kickstarting the process of changing the course.RAR's 25 demandsReed's November and December 2016 Progress Reports in response Featured voices in this episode: Addison Bates, Eden Daniel, alea adigweme, Kambiz GhaneaBassiri, Peter Steinberger, Jan Mieskowski, Pancho Savery, Mary James, Nathalia King, and Mary Frankie McFarlane Forte. Nearly all Reedies take Hum 110, the year-long humanities conference that serves as an introduction to the Reed education. Max decided to go back to Hum 110 to study how students engage with social justice for their linguistics thesis. Reed community members can read Max's thesis, “Just Saying(s): Discursive Practices and Social Justice in a Humanities 110 Conference,” online in the Electronic Theses Archive: https://rdc.reed.edu/i/2ce2d010-461e-4d5a-9603-deb81a8086ca

In spring 2009, alumni, parents, and friends were invited to Love of Learning: Reed's Centennial Conference to reflect on a century of learning and take a personal stake in Reeds next 100 years. The program, which took place in cities across the country and in London, launched the celebration of Reeds upcoming centennial. President Colin Diver led discussion with professors about teaching at Reed and the community that makes this passion for education possible. Also, in each city a local alumni speaker talked about his/her experience at Reed and beyond. The program also included a reception, a short video, and small-group discussions. Record numbers of Reedies contributed to dynamic conversations about how their educational experience defined them and what makes this centennial a meaningful institutional touchstone.
