By dissecting historical events such as the departure from the gold standard, the creation of fake food commodities, and the subtle manipulation by influential personalities and religious entities, Matt decodes how our dietary habits have been economically engineered. Voting adults have a hand in the political process in one way or another. Yet government instruction and good government learning in particular is lacking in our schools and our children's lives.  Mike Winther breaks down why it is so important for children to learn good government principles and the proper role of government. He talks about authority, biblical principles, how we can help our society to thrive.    You'll Learn: [01:06] All of the political issues that we debate have an underlying question of what is the proper role of government. [02:15] Mike shares a scenario about how parents invest massive amounts of time into their kids' sports and extracurricular activities. Children receive thousands of hours of instruction. They get one semester of government instruction, but they are all going to vote. We need to train adults and children in government.  [07:34] Our society is crumbling because we aren't teaching good government to our children. [08:25] Matthew 28 the Great Commission. Jesus shares his final charge with his apostles. [14:57] All passages of scripture are central and necessary. God's word is critical from property rights to business and economics. [18:13] As Christians we often focus on family government and church government and neglect civil government. [19:01] Christians need to learn what the biblical principles of society and government are.  [21:26] Civil government is small when family and church governments are strong. When civil government grows, family and church government shrink. [22:48] We often talk about power and authority when we talk about government. These two are not the same. [24:45] Power is the ability to make someone do something.  [25:36] We want to make sure that when the government uses power that it does it under the proper authority. [31:59] Does the Constitution get its authority from the people? There are problems with having the people be the source of authority.  [34:01] God is the source of all legitimate authority. [39:48] Where does the source of our rights come from? If the government is the source of our rights, it would mean that what they give they could also take away. Is that the type of society we want to live in? [42:49] Do we want the majority to be our source of rights? [43:55] The Constitution is a document created by the people that can be amended. [45:21] The only way to have secure rights is if they are from God. Our founding fathers understood this. [50:38] Mike gives an example of property rights and volunteer charity.  [54:34] The source of rights and authority are from God.    Your Resources: Books to browse Five Principles By Michael Winther

Government has played a critical role throughout the history of the US in launching and supporting employee ownership. Today, the US Departments of Treasury, Commerce, Agriculture, and Labor and the Small Business Administration support employee ownership through financing and lending, regulatory reform, technical assistance, market development, and more, as they help business owners, workers, and local governments across red and blue states to grow worker ownership. In this conversation, speakers discuss what the executive branch is currently doing to support employee ownership and how those efforts can be improved to offer more workers a shot at the American dream through ownership. It features a panel discussion with Rajesh Nayak (Assistant Secretary for Policy, US Department of Labor), Dr. Karama Neal (Administrator, Rural Business-Cooperative Service, US Department of Agriculture), Melissa Hoover (Senior Fellow, Rutgers Institute for the Study of Employee Ownership and Profit Sharing; Founder and Co-Executive Director, Democracy at Work Institute), David Hincapie (Economic Development Specialist, Veteran Business Development Officer, Washington Metropolitan Area District Office, US Small Business Administration), and moderator Maureen Conway (Vice President, The Aspen Institute; Executive Director, Economic Opportunities Program). This two-day convening brought together leading policymakers, practitioners, experts, and the media for a robust discussion on how we can grow employee ownership for the shared benefit of American workers and businesses. There are not a lot of topics more important than protecting abused or suffering children. Lance spent most of his career as a child welfare worker and has also wrote two books on the topic. He started the episode by discussing the importance, but also the challenges, of government being responsible for making decisions about the well being of children. I really appreciated this discussion, because Lance was able to give an inside look to the mind of a social worker. We got a peek inside to understand how he viewed his work, the ugliness he saw, and ultimately what, if any, better solutions we should be considering. As you might expect we also got philosophical and tried to understand what Lance's experiences tell us about human nature and if we should have optimism for the future. More complete bio for Lance- Lance is the author of two books, In Place of the Parent: Inside Child Protective Services and Build A Better Bridge: Social Policy for the 21st Century. He has appeared on several podcasts and radio shows discussing these topics. For most of his professional life, he was a child welfare social worker. This experience gave him a unique perspective. As a social worker, he saw how government policies evolve. New policies usually, but not always, are better. Change often comes at a glacial pace. He wants to speed up the process.

In this episode, we delve into the intricate balance between individual freedom and collective virtues, channeling the wisdom of John Dewey and his philosophies. Through the orchestral metaphor, we unveil the subtleties of this relationship, presenting society as a "symphony" and individuals as "musicians." We discuss Dewey's perspective on the pivotal role of the "conductor" (government) in guiding these diverse performances, not to limit personal virtuosity, but to facilitate its integration into a harmonious collective narrative.Drawing from Dewey's work, we delve into the significance of virtues, moral narratives, and shared values. We discuss how individual skill and commitment to the community contribute to the overall wellness of society, touching upon Dewey's emphasis on the interaction of personal growth and societal health. Lastly, we grapple with Dewey's concept of the "Great Society," contemplating the ramifications of technology and mechanization on our interconnected world. Engaging with his critiques, we explore how we can preserve a sense of belonging and shared purpose amid rapid societal transformation, and how we can utilize technology not as a tool for mere efficiency but as a means to foster deeper connections and nurture our shared humanity. Some Topics Discussed: John Dewey Pragmatism Charles Taylor Individual Freedom Collective Virtues Moral Narratives Shared Values (corporate social responsibility) Great Society Impact of Technology on Society Shared HumanityFurther Info: The Book: The Public and its Problems Twitter: https://twitter.com/Reviving_Virtue Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/RevivingVirtue Contact: revivingvirtue@gmail.com Music by Jeffrey Anthony: https://open.spotify.com/album/1Q9wJCeuUa3wrHrKKtsTFW?si=NeyPJ-dzRBeWfHhYDPgvvw Substack: https://revivingvirtue.substack.com/Book Recommendations based on the themes in this episode: The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion" by Jonathan Haidt: This book explores moral psychology, the foundation of our beliefs, and how they shape our society. We first discuss the practicalities and potential impact of implementing Director Chopra's call in a recent blog post for simplification of consumer finance regulations and simple bright-line rules. We then examine the role and objectives of regulation such as predictability and responsiveness to stakeholder input and consider whether the CFPB's current approach to regulation, including its abandonment of official staff commentary updates, furthers those objectives. We also discuss the recent SCOTUS decision in EPA v. West Virginia and consider its implications for future challenges to CFPB actions.  Alan Kaplinsky, Ballard Spahr Senior Counsel, hosts the conversation.

In 1860, the United States had no national currency, no national bank, and no income tax. Lincoln had a vision of advancing the economic fortunes of the country and fostering greater economic equality through, for example, incentivizing railroads and creating land-grant universities. He and his Treasury Secretary Salmon Chase also faced the challenge of financing the hugely expensive Civil War.  This week on EconoFact Chats, Roger Lowenstein describes how Lincoln and Chase revolutionized the role of the federal government, played a crucial part in the Union Army's victory, and helped forge a national identity – a story that offers a mirror to the current debates over the role of government in building infrastructure and financing higher education as well as the burden of the national debt. Roger reported for The Wall Street Journal for more than a decade. This interview draws from his just-published book 'Ways and Means: Lincoln and His Cabinet and the Financing of the Civil War.'

Government does not measure profit and loss, but it is still a business. Government leaders deliver change, develop strategies, and adapt. Sharing her insights on the topic, Weaver National Strategy Leader Alyssa Martin, CPA, joined Business of Government host and State Government Practice Leader, Adam Jones.Martin has decades of public accounting experience and founded Weaver's advisory services practice. She shared why she loves working with government agencies, “They serve the communities, and that provides a strong connection. One of my favorite parts is seeing leaders take the best of commercial and public and put them together.”Martin's experience working in various sectors also enables her to leverage that experience when working with government leaders as they face new and emerging challenges. “Our government clients have to keep up with the same things as a commercial entity.”Regarding budgeting, Martin advises that governments move away from cost-based to performance-based. “With this approach, they can align better to strategies and trends.”When Martin works with government leaders, she often provides best practices. She said, “Leaders being more accessible to their constituents is a communication and cooperation best practice. We urge them to be collaborative in their management approach, less hierarchical and more fluid.”On key trait that government leaders should have, Martin said is courage. “It's not naturally deployed and is sometimes conditioned to be suppressed. It means having the conviction and intentionality to step up and speak up about ideas, thoughts, and concerns.”Listen to the full episode to hear the full interview between Jones and Martin. History of the prohibition of alcohol in America. Brief history of the Progressive Era. Lochner v. New York. A brief explanation of Substantive Due Process and one of the most famous dissents in all of constitutional law. United States. A brief history of positive rights. The real danger of substantive due process. Is there anything wrong with changing the rules to the game if you're not winning? Why Kam thinks some NOT ALL progressive proposals will run into a "brick wall" when they get to the Constitution. A brief summary of modern political history. The creation of the Corporation and how it impacted American culture. A brief history of property rights. The REAL story behind the tale of Robin Hood.
