In December a number of museum bloggers issued a joint statement calling for museums to address cultural and racial issues that were brought into sharp focus after tragic events in Ferguson, Missouri, and other cities around the country. A mediated Twitter conversation #museumsrespondtoferguson followed and offered a snapshot of how museums were—and were not—responding. This week a group of us will reflect on what these responses reveal about the museum community and the ability of cultural institutions to respond to social justice issues. My guests this week include Melanie Adams, Samuel W. Black, Gretchen Jennings, and Adrianne Russell.
