At first glance, the latest installment of the cover song series is no different than any previous episode. Behind the scenes, though, serendipity is at play here. Like usual, I had quitely filled my “covers” folder over the last few months. A few weeks ago, I had accumulated enough tracks to schedule the show. I could have done it at the end of April, or last week. Next week even. Or I could have held it over until June. But no, I was determed in do on May 23. Then on my usual record store run last Friday I found a number of great Minneapolis garage rock records from the 50s and 60s. Most were compilatons, but I also found a Sundazed Music reissue of The Gestures' self-titled album from 1966. Hailing from Mankato, MN, they had a hit in 1964 with “Run, Run, Run”, their debut single. I picked up this reissue, and loved it! If you want to use the techniques we talked about last week, what we talk about in this interview will give you the baseline insights to make them so much more effective. My guest today is Sarah Levinger, founder of Tether, a research insights platform that helps uncover emotional, behavioral, and identity-driven insights so marketers can connect on a deeper, more human level with their customers. And she uses A.I. to augment the process. Sarah walks through the process and framework she created for finding the kinds of insights that resonates with customers. She categorizes comments and research data by emotion, which leads to a better set of avatars and marketing ideas based on emotion rather than taglines or words that get a little tired as prospects see them over and over in your ads and other marketing.  Then Sarah goes even deeper than feelings to uncover beliefs—she talks about why in this interview. I think you're going to like what she has to share about that. Sarah also mentioned something about A.I. that I hadn't considered before that kind of shifted the way I'm thinking about using tools like Claude and ChatGPT to analyze data. We're extremely excited to present part one of our talk with the Phil Lesh of Deerhoof, Greg Saunier. Deerhoof has been a favorite band of Brandon and me (Rob, the guy Greg keeps making fun of for saying dumb shit) for roughly 20 years. Although Deerhoof was an integral element of us becoming extremely cool dudes into challenging media that's far too intellectual for most people, I think we all agree with Greg's assessment of Deerhoof as a pop band. Of 90s/00s rock bands, it feels disingenuous to consider their noisiness more alienating than Sonic Youth, their lyrics more abstract than Pavement, or their overall vibe weirder than Bjork. Seeing Deerhoof in concert is nearly as accessible as seeing their greatest stylistic influence, the Rolling Stones.That said, the show opens with an attempt to recreate the original edit of their first 7”, The Return of the Wood M'Lady. There are living creatures dwelling deep below the surface of the Earth, as deep as we are able to drill. These hearty microorganisms are related to more familiar life forms on land and under water, but the operate and survive in ways that are quite different from what we're familiar with. They live off of nutrients that have penetrated from the surface, or sometimes off of pure electrons. R. Crumb created Zap Comix and such characters as Mr. Natural and Fritz the Cat. His comics were a staple of the 1960s counterculture, and came out of his nightmares, fantasies and fetishes.
