This leads us to a discussion about his first comic book: Crisis on Infinite Earths, issue 8, “The Final Fate of the Flash,” starting a love affair with all things Flash, but mainly Wally West. This leads to him collecting others DC books, and eventually coming to Marvel comics through Spider-Man. 7:44 Keith talks about how his uncle had a comic book store and how he discovered other comic book stores. This also begins a talk about some of his favorite comic books, including “The Return of Barry Allen," Flash Vol.2, James Robinson's Star Man, and Planetary. This launches a discussion about other great comics including: Authority, Y The Last Man, the upcoming Sandman Netflix series, and more. 21:00 We ask Keith about his secret origin with Mint Condition. Keith shares the story of how he met Joe, bonded over comics, and eventually worked at the store. He also talks about the friends he made at the store. This launches us into a discussion about deep bench DC characters, the Swamp Thing TV show, and the commercials on streaming services. 33:14 We answer the question: "what book would you recommend to someone who is not into comics?" This gets us talking about Ultimate Spider-Man, The Sandman, The Justice League Satellite era, and how exposition should be used in storytelling. 47:00 We wrap up with what Keith is currently reading.
James Robinson's Starman is one of DC comics' legendary runs, so of course, we have to read "Starman: Sins of the Father" for our legacy character discussion. In this comic, Jack Knight reluctantly picks up the mantle of Starman from his father to defend Opal City from The Mist. We talk about the rich family dynamic of the Knights, the self-motivated Shade, and of course the themes of legacy and inheritance. Plus, that gorgeous art just brings Opal City to life, doesn't it? We open our discussion of Legacy characters with Starman by reading "JSA: Strange Adventures" by Kevin J. Anderson. In this retro-feeling comic, the JSA battles the mysterious Lord Dynamo and his Zeppelin. We talk about the old school vibes, Johnny Thunder, dodged complexity, and on-point art. This comic is a work of love, and it shows, but does Golden Age storytelling hold up? Plus, are you hyped for Infinity War? To hear past episodes, go to www.WelcometoComics.com. It's a light news section this week, which is good, as Joe has probably his best week so far for good comics recommendations to talk about: the first two volumes of Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and the first volume of James Robinson and Tony Harris' Starman. But did he like these books as much as Seb and James do (which is to say, a heck of a lot)? You'll have to listen to find out, as if that wasn't obvious.
