In the Airlock (13:44) Jason and Zig dive deep (deeeeep) into the trailers that emerged from this past weekend's DC FanDome, including The Batman, The Flash, HBOMax's Peacemaker and more. In The Omnibus (42:36), Jason continues his exploration of the ‘deadly games' genre to further analyze the economic and sociopolitical ideas behind Netflix's smash hit Squid Game. Next, writer & podcaster Dave Schilling drops by this week's Hive Mind (58:59) for an astute conversation around what makes HBO's Succession the best show on TV & why we love the Roys despite their awful behavior. Batman ('89), Directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton in the titular role with Jack Nicholson turning in a hammily deranged performance as the Joker; the film's campy atmosphere and theatricality is both eye-catching and divergent from the gritty, more noir later Batman films of the 2000s. Available on HBOMax. Flashpoint, a 2011 crossover comics series, the bulk of which was written by Geoff Johns with art by Andy Kubert. As alluded to by Jason, this series radically shifted the landscape of the DC universe and led to the The New 52 reboot of DC's ongoing series. 1989: Bob Dylan Didn't Have This to Sing About, by prominent cultural theorist and poet Joshua Clover originally published in 2009, which analyzes the year 1989 in popular music and the outgrowths (such as rap, grunge, acid house, etc.) that emerged in the following decade. Clover is currently a Professor of English & Comparative Literature at UC Davis. Available on Bookshop.com. Peep Show, a British sit-com that ran from 2003 to 2015 and was written by Jesse Armstrong, among others. Following the lives of two best friends, the show, with its offbeat humor, unconventional POV filming style (hence the name ‘peep show'), and voiceover narration offering the internal monologue of the characters' thoughts, never achieved wide audiences but garnered critical acclaim across its run. Today, the guys start off the pod by discussing 2 new television shows: Sandra Oh in ‘The Chair' and FX's ‘Y: The Last Man' (0:43). Then Asif asks Ali about what life is really like on television and movie sets (8:53). Ali talks about the first set he was on and how he learned the “rules” of being on set. Ali then talks about the food on sets including craft services and catering as well as trailers on sets. Finally, Ali talks about his star-studded interactions with actors on set such as John Larroquette, Kiefer Sutherland, Dave Bautista and Eugene Levy. Then (37:35) Ali asks Asif about the concept of unconscious bias in healthcare. Asif explains how stereotypes about minority groups can result in poorer health care for certain individuals. He talks about how everyone in medicine is susceptible to unconscious bias and discusses ways in which to address it.    The opinions expressed are those of the hosts, and do not reflect those of any other organizations. Over the next few weeks, read along with us as we re-read the seminal Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra Vertigo comic from the early aughts, timed with the new FX/Hulu show. You can also read more about the Long Read at the Comics Syllabus Substack: https://comicssyllabus.substack.com/ Then, Paul offers a few thoughts on his experience of watching "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," catching the movie (and hopefully not COVID!) at a drive-in movie theater, and pondering his feelings on seeing Chinese-American culture represented... This week the squad sets out to answer the most pressing cinematic universe questions of the moment. What is Hulu's new series, Y: The Last Man, about? And why is everyone sleeping on it?? We make our case for this post-apocalyptic series investigating what would happen if every mammal with a Y chromosome suddenly died...except for one man and his monkey. Next we hop into a time vortex back to 2008 to see what would happen if Black Panther villain Killmonger saved Tony Stark in the first Iron Man movie, preventing him from being captured and forced to build the Mark 1. It's also never too early to get into the Halloween spirit. In The ‘Verse! News, we cover Elvira's upcoming 40th Anniversary, Very Scary, Very Special Special, PLUS the trailer for V/H/S/94, the fourth installment in the cult favorite V/H/S anthology horror series. But if you're more of a scaredy cat than a scaries seeker, we also cover Disney+'s upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series, Indiana Jones 5, and DC's upcoming Injustice animated movie.
