1/4: The Pirate King: The Strange Adventures of Henry Avery and the Birth of the Golden Age of Piracy Hardcover – April 2, 2024 by Sean Kingsley (Author), Rex Cowan (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Pirate-King-Strange-Adventures-Golden/dp/1639365958/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= Henry Avery of Devon pillaged a fortune from a Mughal ship off the coast of India and then vanished into thin air—and into legend. More ballads, plays, biographies and books were written about Avery's adventures than any other pirate. His contemporaries crowned him "the pirate king" for pulling off the richest heist in pirate history and escaping with his head intact (unlike Blackbeard and his infamous Flying Gang). Avery was now the most wanted criminal on earth. To the authorities, Avery was the enemy of all mankind. To the people he was a hero. Rumors swirled about his disappearance. The only certainty is that Henry Avery became a ghost. 1850 Ann Bonny and Mary Read

In this episode Dave and Jess watch Totally Killer (2023) on Amazon Prime, which they pair with a second attempt at the Mezcal Old Fashioned cocktail. Is this horror comedy set in the 80's totally tubular, man? Or should it be cast in the trash like New Coke and denim jackets? The couple discuss whether or not this killer's mask will be considered iconic, conventions of time travel movies and homages to Back to the Future, and how Lochlyn Munro will also be "that guy" from Dead Man on Campus. The conversation also goes into comparisons between this film and The Final Girls, with Dave discussing why he thinks you should watch that film, and the couple tease their upcoming short story published by Strange Adventures. Thanks for listening! We hope you enjoyed the episode. Please take time to rate the show wherever you listen to your podcasts and follow us on Instagram at DateNightInPodcast. Join Sis and Big Pops for a fun, fun talk about one of the things we love most—Nerd Stuff. We discuss out fav bits of nerd news over the past couple of weeks: Liam Hemsworth is going to be the new Geralt on the Witcher, WE also talk the role AI is playing in the writers/actors strike, and Sis shares the movies she has watched—Barbie, Oppenheimer, the new Mission Impossible, and the Sound of Freedom. We also discussed some new movie news: Pops loved the One Piece trailer and the Strange New Worlds Musical Episode. There was also a fair bit of comic news this time – in the fall DC is releasing a comic run where it is Monsters vs. Justice league, there is a giant sized Hellboy comic coming out in October, and DC is making 2 new animated features, a Watchmen and a Crisis on Infinite Earths. For bingeing, Big Pops has been watching Star Trek: Strange New World, Secret invasion, and the Silo on Apple+. He did check out season 2 of The Foundation on Apple+ but really did not enjoy it, and eventually turned it off. . Sis has been watching Adventure Time, Doctor Who, Undercover Underage, and Way of Water. She also has been watching her husband play Skyward Sword. Then, Pops shares his pull list! This week he introduces us to Knight Terrors Issue 1 by DC; Scarlet Witch Issue 6 by Marvel; as well as Radiant Black Issue 25 by Image. His new number 1 is also an Image comic, gamed Big Game. With his Book of the Week being Ace Blade by Fourth Wall Productions, an independent, creator-owned comic. This week we reviewed the Disney Movie, John Carter, which we thought was drastically underrated when it came out in the late 2000s. We also reviewed the DC comic run Strange Adventures, the trade is available on Kindle Unlimited. This episode was originally recorded on 07/25/23. Check us out on twitter @sisandbpops

Hey everyone! It's #Scificomics month! I have a new guest to the show, as Ron from the Fantastic Comic Fan podcast is here to talk about this fun story! We see the origin of a great character that seems to be a bit forgotten, although they bring him out once and while. We do touch lightly on the other stories and creators in the book as well. We had a good time resurrecting Captain Comet, to let people know they need to check out Strange Adventures, and more sci-fi comics in general! As usual, you can leave any feedback through email at Magazinesandmonsters@gmail.com or to me on Twitter @Billyd_licious or on the show's FB page or Tumblr page (just search Magazines and Monsters). You can find Ron on Twitter @comic_fantastic and definitely check out his podcast by clicking here! Thanks for listening. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/magsnmonsters/message

The Daily Rios Digest for December 11th, 2022: Paul Pope reimagines Adam Strange for the “Strange Adventures”...
Welcome to a new series on the feed! The Killing Joke is a comic that ended up steering the trajectory of the character of the Joker almost permanently after it came out. For better or worse, the story of the day the Joker finally went too far has stuck with audiences. In the comic the Joker says this line: All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day. The Joker, The Killing Joke (1988) But what if other members of Batman's rogues had their one bad day? With DC's series of Batman: One Bad Day, we are now getting to see what those are from some of the biggest names in the industry. The series kicked off with Tom King, Mitch Gerads, and Clayton Cowles telling the story of The Riddler's one bad day. Tom King and Mitch Gerads are a Eisner Award winning duo who's previous joint work on titles like Mister Miracle, Strange Adventures, and more has cemented them as giants in the industry. Tom King and Mitch Gerads portrayal of The Riddler is a dark and calculated turn by the silly man in the green get up that pushes the character to the limit with a beautifully crafted story and artwork to match. It's a story that dives deeper into the character himself but defines his origins with more gravitas and weight than he was previously given. This story has the makings to be the definitive Riddler story for years to come. On this episode, Tom King and Mitch Gerads come on to dive deeper into the story, the art, and the themes of the book. This episode is filled to the brim with SPOILERS so please read the issue before listening to this in depth discussion. It's a great conversation discussing the duo and the story they got to kick off the One Bad Day series with. The comic is available anywhere you get your comics. If you do not have a local comic shop, be sure to check out Third Eye who will hook you up.
