In the Marvel Universe, the Norse god, Thor, takes his place alongside of Iron Man and Spider Man without theological comment on the improbability of either human superheroes or gods from Asgard existing. Most of the time we easily can tell the difference between what is real and what is fantasy but when it comes to religion, it seems that most people are all too willing to suspend reason and to at least pretend to dive into myths and fantasies. Such religion does us little good and more often does a great deal of harm. So, let's free ourselves from mental slavery since none but ourselves can free our minds!
It is time for the final fight. It is the one you have been waiting for. The biggest fight of the century. That is right, Ant Man versus Doctor Doom.....wait....that can't be right. Really, these two? There have been many great one on one fights that have occurred over time. Superman vs Spider-Man, Hulk vs Thing, Impossible Man vs Warlock....but we should figure out what makes a fight epic. I guess one of the ways to know if it is a great fight, is to see who shows up to watch the fight. If the best you can pull are a couple of kids on bikes, it is probably going to be a stinker. If you pull a couple of celestial heavyweights, you may be swinging for the fences. It helps the fight if you have props. I am not talking about tables or chairs, although wrestling does prove that it does help. No, I am talking about proven scientific electrical devices designed to suck the energy out of their bodies. SCIENCE! No matter what happens, you should always have an ambulance on hand in case of an emergency. You never know what could happen. Someone could get hit in the head with a radioactive pebble, or maybe they take a cosmic ray to the eyeball. Anything could happen. Or, you could have your arms crushed while wearing armored gauntlets. You just do not know. Safety first kids. Again, choose your opponent well. Know their strengths and weaknesses. Have they been resurrected recently? What is their strength versus durability? Do they have arms and legs or are they a meeple? Know this before you throw a punch. And then, when the fight starts, don't forget to punch. Crafty Adventures During Gabriella & Zachary's sleepover we pained and made plastic ornaments with spiraled pipe cleaners inside. So cute and easy! Knitting in Passing A cute preteen girl came over when I was crocheting on the train to ask what kind of hook I was using and then asked if I was making a stocking for Christmas. I asked if she crocheted. She said yes but didn't offer more. When she went back to the grown up she was with, they gave her a big high five. So cute. Then the gentleman across from me who saw me counting rows then asked what happened if I lose count. Told him I could read the stitches. He congratulated me onto who new addition to our family. In My Travels I shared highlights from a recent trip to New York City. I spent a wonderful morning at the MET Aida Silvestri- artist from Eritrea who had a triptych of pieces on display. Her work is motivated by social concern, but it also explores the camera's ability to connect people to a place. In these portraits of immigrant women, the artist strategically blurs her subjects' faces. This gesture, born of a need for protective anonymity, seems to evoke a greater enigma of the self. Mapping the course of migration to London are lines of thread stitched into the surfaces of the print- permanent, identity-altering interventions. Silvestri regards her series as a documentary project dedicated to those travelers who never reached their destination. Two embroidery samplers from Bostonian women from the late 1700s that were just beautiful. We visited the Chelsea Flea- I got a cool pair of earrings We got cookies from Levain Bakery We made a quick trip to Knitty City and Laura picked out yarn for a hat Musical- Two Strangers Carry a Cake Across New York We also saw Blue Moon at the movies. Tells the story of Lorenz Hart's struggles with alcoholism and mental health as he tries to save face during the opening of "Oklahoma!". Commentator Update (links in this section go to Ravelry) Quarter 2 is in full swing and, when I looked today, 9 players had already submitted for points for the Q2 challenge! Are you still thinking of what you can make that is at least 60 rows, using a row counter? Here are some ideas! Hats! Many of our early Q2 finishers completed hats. Neferetri, Hollyelyse and Janknitdun completed beautiful cabled hats...I bet the row counter came in handy for those projects! Kimbuktu7 completed a lovely colorwork hat Adrie9 completed a lovely two colored musselburgh hat Neckwear is also a popular choice among our early Q2 finishers Mikkaelab completed a lovely crocheted cowl and a knit bandana! Sandyrlevin also completed a cowl in steelers colors (note--she used a pattern by PSP Knitty Natty too)--Way to rack up those points! There's still plenty of time for you to get your projects in for Q2. These finishers have definitely demonstrated that there are plenty of patterns with at least 60 rows that work up in a flash! PepperRN added in Pigskin Party Tips Thread on Ravelry If you are budgeting but still want to support sponsors buy something re usable. Stitch markers can be used in 1 project and then when finished in the next. I like knitting hats for charity so I bought a hat pattern from a sponsor. I put that pattern with a sponsor bag and sponsor stitch markers and can knit it over and over during the PSP. On a Happy Note New York City! I took the train this time which was a great option. Laura and I had dinner with two of her pilates clients. We all enjoyed Gabriella and Zachary's first sleepover. We watched the KPOP Demon Hunters movie and after going to bed early and reading the Hot Air Balloon book, wehad fun hunting for the orange eyed monster! Dan made the kids pancakes and we'll put their photos on the collage wall in the guest room. Gabriella asked for a unicorn and a ghost Spiderman. Zach wanted Spiderman. I received a really nice message from my cousin Gayle who was visiting her friend in NH and let me know that Mom's shawl that she chose was keeping her warm. Love you Gayle! My childhood friend Maribeth has shared a few photos of things her family has found when cleaning out her parents' attic- costumes and things my mom made. It was sweet of her to send me those photos so we could reminisce. I finally got to join Beth's Karaoke Night Zoom (part of the Love in Stitches Membership). Dad is recovering from a back injury but doing better. We successfully moved my grandmother into the Memory Care side of the independent living home she's lived at for 5 years. Hope this will be a good fit for her. I got a massage this week! Quote of the Week "In November, the earth is growing quiet. It is making its bed, a winter bed for flowers and small creatures. The bed is white and silent, and much life can hide beneath its blankets." ― Cynthia Rylant, In November ------ Thank you for tuning in! Contact Information: Check out the Down Cellar Studio Patreon! In honor of 420, its time to look at some of the weirdest, and wackiest toys ever designed. You really have to wonder, what were they on when coming up with some of this stuff. From poorly thought out labels to accidental nightmare fuel, child endangerment and even a pre-cursor to Siri - combined with, water? Then it's another edition of The Team from the wonderful world of TMNT - but ONLY the Turtle variants. And the choices are not as simple as you might think! Phillip and Eric are the first part of a rewatch of Sam Raimi's infamous Spider-Man 3 starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst and featuring Sandman, Venom, Green Goblin, Gwen Stacey, and too many subplots. They see if the film has aged better as Phillip claims and debate the difference between a host and a maitre'd.

Sometimes, though, mother nature beats out the comic books, with certain rare creatures possessing astounding abilities that can rival iconic superheroes. This is the second appearance of Scott Christian Sava on StoryBeat. Scott's an artist, animator, illustrator, writer, director, and producer, whose work over the last 30 years, has brought some of the world's most beloved characters to life in film, television, comics, and games, from Casper the Friendly Ghost to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to Star Trek to Spider-Man and more. Scott's unique talents and vision have been called upon by Marvel Comics, Disney, Universal Studios, Nickelodeon, and various others. In 2000, he founded Blue Dream Studios, which, in addition to creating its own line of kids' graphic novels, has produced work for Star Wars, The X-Files, Aliens vs. Predator, and other franchises. The studio's first feature film, Animal Crackers, is available on Netflix and was the summer of 2020's #1 animated movie in the world. I've read Scott's latest book, “Becoming an Artist: How to Make Art Like a Human by Embracing Failure, Discovering Your Creative Voice, and Finding Joy in the Process.” I found the very useful concepts of Becoming an Artist easy and fun to read while being highly inspirational for anyone seeking to become a finely tuned artist. Scott also produces videos online dedicated to his over 4 million followers where he talks about art, autism, and how to be both a kindlier artist and human. Scott's mission is to “make the world a kinder, gentler place, one story at a time.”
I got an email from someone saying, “Hey, you should interview this guy… He used to be the CEO of Marvel.” And I thought... wait, like Marvel-Marvel? As in Iron Man and Spider-Man?? Yeah… That guy. His name's Peter Cuneo, and what he shared about leadership, storytelling, and turnarounds is pure gold. We talked about how he rebuilt Marvel from the ground up, and got to learn multiple lessons that will be in his upcoming book! He's one of the most fascinating leaders I've ever talked to. What he did at Marvel wasn't just a financial turnaround, it was a transformation in leadership, storytelling, and how to connect people emotionally to a brand. Key Highlights: ◼️How Marvel used character development to rebuild emotional connection with fans ◼️Why great leaders embrace flaws and authenticity to build trust ◼️How consistent communication (like Peter's pizza lunches) transforms culture ◼️Why strong leaders take ownership, admit mistakes, and lead through change ◼️The leadership framework behind his upcoming book Super Hero Leadership This conversation completely reframed how I think about leadership. Peter reminded me that people don't follow products or plans… They follow characters. The same way fans connect to Iron Man or Captain America, your customers and employees connect to you when you let them see who you really are…. And communicate effectively with your team! ◼️If you've got a product, offer, service… or idea… I'll show you how to sell it (the RIGHT way) Register for my next event → https://sellingonline.com/podcast ◼️Still don't have a funnel? Total THB has always felt like a living piece of your imagination—something that evolved alongside you. Now that you're returning to it after thirty years, what does it mean to finally see it presented as the definitive version you always envisioned?7. In your introduction, you mention artists like Bruegel, Motherwell, and Rodin alongside Kirby, Moebius, and Miyazaki. That's a fascinating cross-section of influences—how do you see Total THB sitting at the intersection of those worlds now?2. In your introduction, you talk about the seed idea—“small things exploding into big things.” How has that core concept shaped your storytelling and visual philosophy across your entire career, and how does it feel to return to it now with decades of experience behind you?8. Total THB is set on a divided Mars, a world of art versus bureaucracy, chaos versus control. Given how global politics and culture have evolved since the '90s, do you see new relevance—or new warnings—in the story's setting and themes?5. The relationship between HR and THB—the sheltered daughter and her enigmatic bodyguard—feels both intimate and mythic. How do you see their dynamic now, and what new layers do you hope readers discover in this remastered edition?6. You've described superheroes before as modern myths — figures that blend pulp with poetry. Having moved between corporate superhero universes and your own creator-owned worlds, what do you think mainstream superhero comics could still learn from the spirit of self-publishing that birthed THB*?*

Jim Hill and Eric Hersey dig into a newly surfaced Universal guest survey that hints at Epic Universe joining the resort's Annual Pass lineup — and what that could mean for crowds, pricing, and park strategy. Plus, Jim shares a real-life road trip saga straight out of a Hallmark movie, and the guys unpack Universal's latest headlines from Orlando to Hollywood. NEWS A listener-sent Universal survey suggests Epic Universe may soon be included in AP tiers. Comcast's Q3 results show a 19% jump in theme park revenue, driven by Epic's first full quarter. The Burning Blade Tavern's fire effect goes dark — and fans dub it “The Invisible Blade.” Jim explains why Spider-Man still appears in Universal marketing — thanks to a contract clause requiring 20% Marvel representation in Islands of Adventure ads. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz return for a brand-new Mummy sequel, proving Universal's monster legacy isn't dead yet. FEATUREJim continues his deep dive into Universal's ill-fated Dark Universe — the studio's ambitious attempt to build a monster-filled cinematic universe. From Dracula Untold to The Mummy (2017), discover how even A-list stars and big budgets couldn't resurrect the undead franchise. The SuperHero Homies are back — and this week, we're doing what Hollywood couldn't: fixing bad superhero movies! From Superman Returns to X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, we take on some of the most disappointing comic book films ever made and reimagine them with just a few smart changes. But first, we kick things off with a 30-minute cold open packed with gaming and pop culture talk! We discuss which games might win Video Game of the Year (with Expedition 33 as a top contender), why live service games usually fail, and whether politics belong in art and entertainment. We dive deep into how storytelling, messaging, and creative freedom shape the worlds we love — from comics to cinema. Then it's time to fix some bad superhero movies — with three simple rules: 1️⃣ The movie must stay in its cinematic universe timeline (no reshuffling releases). 2️⃣ You can't remove actors, directors, or characters — but you can add new ones. 3️⃣ The core premise must stay the same — no total reboots. With those limits in place, we prove that even within Hollywood's restrictions, these movies could've been way better. We share how we'd improve character arcs, pacing, tone, and storytelling in Superman Returns, X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga, Spider-Man 3, and more!
Zac and Phil go deep on Magic: The Gathering's growing obsession with outside IPs, asking the big question — when did “nods” become “crossovers”?In this episode, they explore how Magic evolved from subtle flavor callbacks (like Theros's Greek myth inspiration or Arabian Nights' literary roots) to full-on Universes Beyond product lines. The conversation spans design philosophy, flavor theory, and even a little literary criticism — all centered on why Magic feels different now. From Avatar: The Last Airbender to Spider-Man and beyond, the guys debate what makes some collaborations work and others feel… off. Is it art style? Setting? Narrative tone? Or is it that Magic used to suggest connections rather than define them?

Maddy and Ryan circle back to the pilot episode of Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, which you'd think would set up the show's premise and characters, but it doesn't. Peter and Bobby go on a double date to a comic book-themed dance where everybody's dressed up as Marvel heroes and heroines, which results in the most confusing possible introduction of Firestar, who's dressed as Spider-Woman and doesn't start using her actual powers until almost halfway through the episode. "The Triumph of the Green Goblin" is extra fun to watch for The Mutant Ages purposes because it's legitimately hard to tell whether Iceman or the Green Goblin is the more queer-coded character. Kirin Sinha, MIT math prodigy and founder/CEO of Illumix, embodies the vital intersection of AI, XR, and real-world relevance. On this episode, she unpacks the hard realities of spatial computing's journey—from grinding through MIT at sixteen and “building the Iron Man desk as a senior project” to launching Five Nights at Freddy's AR (garnering 60M+ downloads) and powering Disney/Six Flags location-based XR.Sinha challenges the XR hype machine: “Location-based constraints are the best sandbox. Real-world variability, lighting, edge compute, and privacy aren't just demos—they're survivability.” She candidly discusses why the first era of mobile AR rarely survived outside of theme parks and why the true metaverse won't arrive through geofenced phone gimmicks, but rather from ambient cameras, context-aware AI, and wearables that deliver daily relevance. The conversation dives into XR's scaling riddle: most startups go too big, too soon—Illumix ran lean and learned real lessons from thousands of live deployments before expanding. Sinha's take on platform dominance? “Whoever pairs visual context with an always-on, lightweight wearable—without being creepy—wins.” She weighs the mergers-and-acquisitions question with nuance (“you keep every door open, but we've built for independence and profitability”), and explains exactly why Niantic's follow-up AR games failed to recapture Pokemon Go's lightning-in-a-bottle.Guest HighlightsEnrolled at MIT at 16; bridge between math, AI, and real-world camera vision.Founded Illumix, powering everything from “Five Nights at Freddy's” AR (60M+ organic downloads) to Disney and Six Flags' location-driven XR.Deep infrastructure: dynamic, privacy-first, real-time spatial intelligence at the edge, not reliant on the cloud.Insights on product-market fit and startup timing: “Most of the world's ‘available' XR space is dead space without a ‘why' for users.”Honest, nuanced take on M&A, survival, and why lean teams win when timing finally shifts.News SegmentNvidia's $4.5T valuation—is big tech over-hyped, or will foundational arms dealers keep winning while everyone else corrects?Major tech layoffs attributed to AI “efficiency”—stock prices keep rising as automation accelerates, but most Americans are left behind.Brendan Iribe's $300M AI/AR glasses startup—a kinder, context-aware approach to ambient interfaces, but does anyone actually break out from the pack?Google/Magic Leap factory reboot, patent arsenal, and Surface team members cycling across Meta and Apple—XR's “three Spider-Mans” all fight for the same future.OpenAI's privatization and AGI date bets—the team debates when, how, and if superintelligence IPOs.XR economy is in a phase shift—who survives, who gets acquired, and who makes it to scale?Special thanks to our sponsor Zappar.
