First issues are hard. Last issues are hard. Second-to-last issues are hard. Maybe...all issues are hard? Book Club is back in session with creators Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm, discussing Spectrum #5, the penultimate issue in their brilliant Mad Cave Studios series. With the end just around the corner (the final issue arrives in shops on May 21st, as does our final Book Club episode with Quinn and Chisholm, so mark your calendars), Spectrum #5 must elevate and explode a bunch of grandiose ideas about art that the comic has so far been teasing or suggesting. Spectrum #5 is a BIG comic following two central characters while traversing multiple timelines and encountering alternate-dimension stand-ins for iconic cultural figures and places from our world. Quinn and Chisholm might not say it, but we will: PBGBs is CBGBs, and Gloria Bell is Patti Smith. Half the pleasure of reading Spectrum is tracking their sci-fi alternatives of real-world legends, which recalls similar joys had when devouring Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. However, as Spectrum #5 ramps toward its fiery conclusion next month, the fervor with which Quinn and Chisholm explore vital artistry is the ultimate appeal. Why do humans sing? Why do they paint? Why do they tell stories to one another? During a moment when artistic expression is recklessly dismissed or downright eradicated, Spectrum #5 shows its readers how they're constantly engaged with creative expression and why only the most vile and pathetic people are detached from it. Last month's Spectrum Book Club was extremely process-heavy in its conversation. Now, for the penultimate issue, it's time to dig into the thematic weeds, have a serious chat about human connection, and worry not about labels of pretension. We're all friends here. Spectrum 1 - 5 are currently available from Mad Cave Studios, and the final issue will arrive in shops on April 21st. Make sure you're following Dave Chisholm on his Website, TikTok, Instagram, and Bluesky. And follow Rick Quinn on his Website, Bluesky, and Instagram. This Week's Sponsor We're sponsored by 2000 AD, the greatest comic you're not reading! Spoiler Discussions for Daredevil Born Again: Episodes 5-7 and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen! #DaredevilBornAgain #TheLeagueofExtraoridnaryGentlemen
Will & Jared begin a new mini-series delving into the comic book movies of the past, the very specific past, between 1995 and 2005. Years before the MCU or The Dark Knight. Back when comic book movies weren't exactly taken seriously, and certainly weren't the dominant topic of conversation in film and media. We begin with a foray into a oft-forgotten big budget spectacle that spawned multiple headlines due to clashes between its star and director. A film with such a troubled production that afterwards both of these men would retire from the industry. A premise too good to ignore, but a film rushed into production before the inspirational comic was even finished printing. Will & Jared discuss the 2003 blockbuster The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.Does this film slap despite its awful RT score? How well do the effects hold up and is Mr. Hyde practical? What was up with that prequel to 28 Days Later? Click here to send me a text message (include your contact info if you want a reply). To be alone in the world is a terrible thing, unless of course it is by choice. Especially for men, the heart may long for deep connection while all our social posturing creates the opposite--distance. When men discover deep friendship with other men it is a gift to be savoured and, in this instance, shared. Don McLeod, Barry Foster and I have met together for almost twenty-five years, dubbing ourselves, preposterously, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. We have no advice about how others might do this themselves, but by sharing our own story perhaps some wisdom will emerge for those who seek a similar experience. All we know is that the world, and our world in particular, is a lot better for having friends. We delve into the world of science fiction in the latest episode of the Fully-Booked podcast. The hosts, Meaghan and Arthur, express their excitement and curiosity about the genre, particularly focusing on its evolution and the rising popularity of "hard science fiction." They begin by discussing the intriguing concept of how science fiction heroes utilize real science to address relatable challenges, making the genre both accessible and compelling. This exploration sets the tone for an episode filled with diverse discussions on books, subgenres, and broader thematic elements within science fiction. What’s on the Nightstand: Exploring Current Reads The hosts share their current reading adventures; Arthur is engrossed in Revenant-X, the second book in the Red Space series by David Wellington, which masterfully blends sci-fi and horror. He highlights how the first book, Paradise-1, and its sequel create a gripping narrative. Similarly, Transmentation Transience by Darkly Lem, an ARC due for release in March, captivates him with its mix of multiverse adventure and theoretical science. The book, closely compared to The Expanse and Jeff VanderMeer’s works, promises to be a groundbreaking addition to science fiction. Meaghan shares her thoughts on Liar’s Kingdom by Christine Colella, a reimagining of Cinderella’s story that dives into life after the glass slipper moment. This ARC explores themes of freedom, identity, and personal growth with a fantasy twist. She also discusses Hitchcock Hotel by Stephanie Robel, a thrilling story about a group of friends reuniting in a Hitchcock-themed hotel, where unresolved issues lead to chaos. Despite struggling with unlikable characters, Meaghan finds the narrative intriguing. Science Fiction Subgenres: Classic vs. Hard Science The conversation shifts to defining science fiction and its subgenres, particularly the distinction between traditional and hard science fiction. Science fiction, the hosts note, often extrapolates from current scientific principles to create fantastical worlds. However, hard science fiction grounds itself more firmly in existing theories and factual science, requiring detailed research and plausible explanations for technological advancements. The hosts point to Andy Weir’s novels, such as The Martian and Project Hail Mary, as prime examples of hard science fiction that resonate with readers by emphasizing problem-solving and scientific accuracy. They emphasize the genre’s flexibility, blending elements of romance, horror, fantasy, and more. This adaptability has made science fiction a broad and enduring genre, with examples ranging from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to contemporary narratives. The hosts marvel at how even foundational works, like Frankenstein, integrate hard science elements - such as reanimation through electricity - while delving into complex themes of humanity and ethics. The Appeal of Hard Science Fiction Andy Weir’s books dominate much of the discussion as the hosts explore his ability to balance humor, adventure, and scientific rigor. We think Weir’s meticulous research and collaboration with experts, including NASA scientists, lend authenticity to his narratives. In The Martian, for instance, the protagonist’s survival on Mars involves ingenious uses of science, from creating nutrient-rich soil to generating water. Project Hail Mary takes the concept further, presenting a lone protagonist on a mission to save Earth from an energy-depleting parasite. The story integrates universal scientific principles to create a unique communication method between humans and alien species, making it both intellectually stimulating and emotionally engaging. While Artemis shifts gears to a murder mystery on the moon, the hosts note that it retains elements of hard science, showcasing Weir’s versatility. The hosts admire how Weir’s works balance technical detail with relatability, creating stories that are accessible even to readers without a strong science background. They suggest that this blend of authenticity and entertainment makes his books appealing to a broad audience. Enduring Works and Adaptations: Exploring Science Fiction’s Legacy The discussion broadens to include other influential works in the genre. The hosts praise The Expanse for its blend of hard science and expansive storytelling, and they highlight Liu Cixin’s Three-Body Problem trilogy for its deep exploration of physics and extraterrestrial concepts. While acknowledging the intellectual challenge these works may pose for some readers, they emphasize their contribution to the genre’s evolution. The hosts also explore classic works like Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, illustrating how early science fiction integrated hard science principles. Verne’s meticulous descriptions of marine life and submarine technology reflect the genre’s potential to educate and inspire. They compare this to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, noting how these classics continue to influence modern science fiction. Adaptations of these works, such as the Netflix series based on the Three-Body Problem, demonstrate the genre’s enduring appeal. However, the hosts caution that adaptations must balance complexity with accessibility to resonate with a wider audience. They cite the mixed reception of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and The Dark Tower as examples of how challenging it can be to translate dense literary material into engaging screen narratives. The Popularity of Science Fiction Today We believe science fiction’s increasing popularity stems from its ability to combine adventure with intellectual depth. Films like The Martian and series like For All Mankind attract audiences by blending relatable human experiences with scientific exploration. The humor and ingenuity of the characters in these narratives make them both entertaining and thought-provoking. We think hard science fiction’s appeal lies in its grounding in reality, which allows readers to connect with the material on a deeper level. The hosts acknowledge, however, that the genre’s technical focus may limit its accessibility for some audiences. Nonetheless, they celebrate its capacity to inspire curiosity and expand horizons. An Invitation to Explore The episode concludes with an invitation for listeners to share their thoughts on science fiction. The hosts encourage engagement through social media and the Fully-Booked website, emphasizing the genre’s diversity and its potential to captivate readers of all backgrounds. As we reflect on the discussions, it’s clear that science fiction offers something for everyone - from thrilling adventures to profound explorations of human nature and the universe. Art finds us when we need it most. Spectrum, the new Mad Cave Studios series from creators Dave Chisholm and Rick Quinn, is an astonishing sci-fi saga that begins inside the Seattle WTO protests of 1999 and propels its characters into a realm where music grants flight. The central character, Melody, can't quite discern what's real and what's not - a sensation you may very well be familiar with at this moment - seeing impossible beings floating amongst the crowds. Powers from within and without compel her on a journey that operates as the best geeky musical Where's Waldo for the reader who is willing. Y'all ready for the MTV version of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? Y'all remember MTV? We're already so obsessed with Spectrum that we've committed to a series of six podcast episodes, one for each new issue. Thankfully, Dave Chisholm and Rick Quinn are also up for this pop culture plunge. They join us for an excavation of sound and a discussion on the song's importance in our daily lives and how they miraculously transplanted one artistic expression into another. Spectrum is waiting for your eyes. You merely need to put them upon it and join this book's inevitable cult following. Make sure to alert your comic shop of its existence. Slap it in your pullbox. Be part of this book's success, as it's unlike anything else on the stands. Here's your chance to be the snooty person in the shop, claiming your crown as one of Spectrum's first converted followers. The first issue arrives on 11/20, and the second drops on 1/8/2025. Make sure you're following Dave Chisholm on his Website, TikTok, Instagram, and Bluesky. Legends of Halloween is back for another spooky season with a throwback from twenty years ago, which is itself a throwback to the classic Universal Monster movies. Director Stephen Sommers had found success five years earlier in reanimating another Universal monster, The Mummy, with the Legend of ‘99 film starring Brendan Fraser. Here he tries to recapture the magic that led to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson's movie career with a Hugh Jackman-starring take on the classics Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Wolf Man. While the resultant film did “stake” a claim at the box office (to the sum of $300 million) it was D.O.A. with film critics (the same ones who hated The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, another literary mash-up released the year prior) and plans for a franchise were quickly buried. But God Himself can't erase our memories - we watched Van Helsing, so you're going to hear about it… Dammit! The Between is a tabletop roleplaying game about a group of mysterious monster hunters in Victorian-era London. They are residents of a place called Hargrave House, and their job is to investigate and neutralize monstrous threats terrorizing the city—threats that Scotland Yard won't or can't handle themselves. As the story progresses, they become aware of the plans of a Moriarty-style criminal mastermind they will eventually have to face in order to save Queen and country. The Between is directly inspired by the gothic horror TV show Penny Dreadful, but also takes a lot of inspiration from British horror classics, graphic novels like From Hell and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and pulp-era stories. Mechanically, it's Powered by the Apocalypse but also uses the mystery system from Brindlewood Bay. Evan Tognotti joins the show to dig into 2002's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, an infamous big budget flop (or "disappointment," if you prefer Chris' classification) which had huge ramifications not just for the superhero genre and Hollywood icon Sean Connery's career, but for the Tognotti family's own personal fortunes.
Intro music from:Arthemis - Survivor (Destiny's Child Cover)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjYCOtYjCY4The Survivor is a 1981 supernatural horror Australian-British co-production directed by David Hemmings and starring Robert Powell, Jenny Agutter, and Joseph Cotten. In Adelaide, Australia (not Eton in the UK as in the original novel written by James Herbert), airline pilot David Keller (played by Powell) survives the crash of his Boeing 747-200, unhurt despite all 300 passengers dying in the accident. With no memories of the accident, he starts to suffer strange supernatural visions.Director David Hemmings is most famous for his acting roles, including Dildano in Barbarella, Marcus Daly in Dario Argento's Deep Red, and Thomas, the fashion photographer in the hugely successful avant-garde mystery film Blowup – a role turned down by Sean Connery because director Michelangelo Antonioni would not show him the full script but only a seven-page treatment stored in a cigarette packet. Hemmings would later feature in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen with Connery 37 years later.Robert Powell, best known for his portrayal of a charismatic cult leader/son of a carpenter in the 1977 epic television drama series Jesus of Nazareth, also played secret agent Richard Hannay in The Thirty-Nine Steps, appeared in Ken Russell's Tommy as Captain Walker and, at the request of his friend and golf partner, comedian Jasper Carrott, co-starred in the BBC sitcom The Detectives (which ran for five series!). He also lent his voice to the 2002 rock opera The Hound of the Baskervilles by Clive Nolan and Oliver Wakeman, playing John Watson. Powell was considered for several roles in Lifeforce (featured in episode 39 of this podcast). A founder member of the Social Democratic Party in 1981, he campaigned alongside Barry Norman on behalf of the party's first leader, Roy Jenkins.Jenny Agutter (OBE), who plays the role of Hobbs the clairvoyant (a male character in the novel), is best known for her ongoing role in the inexplicably popular Call the Midwife. She also starred in two adaptations of The Railway Children, the critically acclaimed film Walkabout, and, relevant to this podcast, An American Werewolf in London (listen to episode 26 for more info). The film also features Joseph Cotten, (best man at Orson Welles's wedding to Rita Hayworth) appeared in five films selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant. In addition to these classics, he appeared in many films and TV programs, including, pertinent to this podcast, one episode of Tales of the Unexpected. He later admitted, "I was in a lot of junk. I get nervous when I don't work." This was his final motion picture, suffering a stroke shortly after working on it.James Herbert, author of the source novel, sent a note to David Hemmings offering his assistance. He never received a reply, and in 1988 dismissed this film and the later Deadly Eyes (the film adaptation of The Rats) as "They're terrible...absolute rubbish. I can only say - don't blame me." The Survivor was Herbert's third novel, published in 1976, coming after The Rats and The Fog.The music for this film is by Brian May! …but not the one you're thinking of... This is the Australian Brian May, who has an impressive musical CV, including: The Blue Lagoon, Gallipoli, Mad Max, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Missing in Action 2 and Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare. This was the first Australian movie to cost more than $1 million (Australian) to make. The location was shifted to OZ as a complex tax dodge, allowing English investors to completely write-off on the whole film.
