Show notes provided by Joe Peluso It's that time of the year when the Mint Crew counts their blessings and gives thanks. This year James, Chris and Joe want to thank their favorite pop culture creators who have bestowed on each of them the gifts of awe, influence, thoughtfulness, and fun. From the realms of movies and TV, to comics and novels, music and sports, the guys list the things that fired their imaginations, and lifted their souls. Who were the novelists that brought Chris back to reading fiction? Who was the Spider-Man artist that wowed James with his unique and wild designs and layouts? And what 1960's baseball player cemented Joe's lifelong love affair with the sport? I don't want to give away too much, because this is one of our"list" episodes that we hope will surprise--and entertain you. There's a few twists and turns, some philosophical musings, a heaping amount of adulation, and a fair amount of history. So sit back and enjoy the interpretive introspections of themulti-talented individuals who for decades have propelled all of us into the vast playground we lovingly call the "pop culture universe". Finally on this special day, please remember how much we love and appreciate you--our faithful Mint Condition friends. Thank you. Live long and prosper.

Lawrence El, the distinguished keyboardist and songwriter from Mint Condition is reuniting with the members of Mint to celebrate a particular facet of their musical offerings; The Mintroludes. During Mint's decades long run as a band they satiated their musical appetites with short interludes that bring in a wider array of styles then their primary R&B offerings would permit. Lawrence El, so often the architect of these Mintroludes, decided he would call in the members of Mint Condition and friends and flesh those short tunes out into full on songs. The group will do just that on Monday, September 15 for two shows over at Icehouse. Special guests include: Stokley, Cory Henry, O'Dell, Ricky Kinchen, Jeffrey Allen, Keri Lewis, David Ginyard Jr and Kavyesh Kaviraj, Chris 'Daddy' Dave and more. Lawrence El was nice enough to visit our studios to discuss his musical journey and what inspired him to organize this concert.

Show notes provided by Joe PelusoGathered from the four corners of the cosmos are assembled the world's four greatest podcasters! James! Chris! Richie! and Joe!, banded together to bring you the BIG Fourth Anniversary Episode! of The Secret Origins of Mint Condition!!"! (Cue the theme from The Super-Friends) Dusting off Sherman's and Mr. Peabody's Way-Back Machine, the guys revisit the GREAT Batman v Superman debate from an era when Mint Condition had four walls. To say that this special episode dives deeply into the various eras of the two most iconic fictional characters in all of comics would be a gross understatement of epic proportions! Suffice it to say that this "return" shines new lights and perceptions on who exactly are Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent. So much is discussed and disseminated in this episode, that itwould be a crime to reveal the contents and spoil your listeningenjoyment. And while the verbal repartee is measured and respectful, there are a few surprises contained herein that may shock and surprise. And as we now enter year five, I know I speak for all the MintFaithful in publicly thanking James Louie for the creation of thiswonderful digital forum that has kept the spirit of Mint Condition Comics alive. Whoever thought that comic books and CBM's, Star Trek and Star Wars, Magic The Gathering and Pokemon, science fiction and fantasy--and yes--baseball and hockey could engender a universe worth of conversations that would ultimately spark into creation a loving family of friends who always dared to dream? Thanks, James.
Show notes provided by Jack AdrienBefore the entertainment and media industry's endless stream of sequels, reboots, reimaginings, remakes, franchises, or tentpoles, there was The Planet of the Apes. Starting in 1963 as French author Pierre Boulle's novel, La Planète des singes – or better known in the United States as Planet of the Apes in the United Kingdom as Monkey Planet, respectively – the intellectual property gained international acclaim through its synonymous 1968 film adaption directed by Franklin J. Schaffner and starring Charlton Heston. Most filmgoers remember the film adaptation for arguably one of cinema's most famous twist endings [57-YEAR SPOILER WARNING: Charlton Heston and the other astronauts were never on another planet, their spaceship returned to a post-apocalyptic Earth 2006 years after their in-universe 1972 departure with intelligent apes as the dominant life form] . A critical and commercial success, the film adaptation spawned three film sequels (i.e., Beneath the Planet of the Apes released on May 27, 1970; Escape from the Planet of the Apes released on May 21, 1971; Conquest of the Planet of the Apes released on June 29, 1972; and Battle for the Planet of the Apes released on June 15, 1973). Ignoring the best forgotten Tim Burton remake released on July 27, 2001, the franchise gained a new life as the Rise of the Planet of the Apes reboot spawning three successful sequels (i.e., Dawn of the Planet of the Apes released on July 11, 2014; War for the Planet of the Apes released on July 14, 2017; and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes released on May 10, 2024). The new series introduced social awareness themes of animal genetic therapy experimentation, environmentalism, and human indifference of the natural world to a new generation. Join the Mint Condition crew of James, Joe, Josh, and Jack as we trace the legacy of The Planet of Apes' novel, original series, comic book, television series, animated series, toys, and other merchandise.

Show notes provided by Jack AdrienLet's be honest, DC Comics' frequent universal reboots or recons have kind of become a long running joke at this point. Through the Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985), Zero Hour: Crisis in Time (1994), Infinite Crisis(2005), Flashpoint (2011), Convergence (2015), DC Universe: Rebirth (2016), and DC Comics: Death Metal(2020), one DC character has weathered, even prospered, during the occasional multiversal frolic or timeline revision. Surprisingly, that character is not one of the iconic DC Trinity characters (i.e., Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman). No, Hawkman, throughout his long history and many iterations, truly epitomizes how good writers and editors can reimagine or reinvent a familiar, but B-list character, no matter what shape the comic universe takes.Join the Mint Condition crew of James, Joe, Keith, and Jack as we untangle the history, mystery, and significance of Hawkman (aka Carter Hall, Hawk, Khufu, Savage Hawkman, Katar Hol, Fel Andar, Hawk Avatar).

Show notes provided by Joe PelusoOnce again, the back door to Mint Condition swings open and your hosts James and Joe are present to discuss, dissect and disseminate all things pop culture. In this episode the boys launch into the most recent movie trailers of this summer's two (We hope!) blockbuster films: SUPERMAN and FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS. Geeking out over what they've seen in these two teases (Hey, Ma Kent is in the film! And Galactus is walking cross-town--hopefully in the bicycle lane.), theories, questions, and possibilities abound. Is Luthor using Metamorpho as a walking chemistry set? Is this version of the Silver Surfer Shalla Bal? Will Jimmy Olsen finally have something to do in a Superman movie? And how distracted will Reed be in the F.F. film? These, and many other pressing questions, fill a fun-filled hour of this most recent "back of the store chat". And stick around for our recommendations (Ironheart, Dexter: Resurrection, some DC Absolute talk, Space Ghost and Speed Racer, and Ultimate Spider-Man.) And in a rare moment, that can only be described as a "respectful" mini rant, James and Joe question Marvel's editorial obstinacy of keeping Peter Parker in a perpetual lifetime holding pattern. It promises to be a summer of pop culture fun. And it starts here with you, the MInt faithful. ENJOY!

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got the whole crew back in the house once again, and all sorts of video games to discuss — in spite of our "mixed levels of gaming" lately — so let's get right into the action! John gets the party started with an update on his time with Outer Wilds — which is quickly becoming one of his all-time faves — mainly focusing on the Echoes of the Eye DLC. He also gives some more thoughts on the Metroid Prime series, after polishing off "Remastered" on Switch, and jumping right into Echoes on the Gamecube! Kevin follows that up with some more Nintendo action, after getting pretty sucked into The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, thanks to its availability via the Switch Online Expansion Pass. Finally, Randall closes us out with some turn-based strategy tactics on the TurboGrafx-16 — Military Madness (aka Nectaris) — which he's been playing on his Analogue Pocket. Join your hosts Keith and Joe as they introduce a young man with some incredible takes on our pop culture universe. From the Sam Rami Spider-Man movies, to the MCU, and the OG Superman Christopher Reeve flicks, Dylan gives us an original spin on these films and their franchises. Dylan's incredible nuanced critiques of all things pop culturewill educate, elucidate, and energize your preconceptions of Superman, Spider-Man, Star Wars, and the DCAU. What follows is a fun-filled hour of all things nerdy (with Keithand Joe being the kings) by an insightful, intelligent young man whogets it. The future is in good hands. Or to put it another way:"Second star to the right and straight on till morning".

Before Freddy, before Jason, before Michael Myers, there was the original horror movie franchise the universal monsters. Although by today's standards, they may not seem as scary, these legendary figures inspired the monsters and the horror movies of today. While not scary to a modern audience, each one of them was a dive into deeper parts of humanity and represent universal arch types that we still write stories about today. Show notes provided by Jack Adrien How does a rejuvenated science fiction franchise follow arguably the best installment in its long-standing television and movie series? Well, if it's the decades-long Star Trek franchise and following Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan's (Khan's) critical and commercial success, Paramount Pictures greenlit for producer Harve Bennett to write a sequel the day after Khan opened. But how would that work? We watched and mourned Mr. Spock's heroic sacrifice to save the Enterprise and her crew, marking the “death” of not only one of the franchise's most beloved and well-known characters, but also a character that embodies the science fiction genre. And Leonard Nimoy, the actor who brought Mr. Spock to life, had long expressed his frustration with the weight of playing the character, most notably in his first autobiography released in 1975, I Am Not Spock. With Khan, did Paramount grant Nimoy's wish? Whereas Star Trek: The Motion Picture rebooted the franchise for cinema audiences, Khan reintroduced a memorable antagonist from one of the series' first season episodes. Although the third film in the Star Trek film franchise,Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (Search) marked the second part of what many consider a three-film story arc – beginning with Khan released in 1982 and ending with 1986's Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (Voyage) – that shows how the original series characters accept aging in the franchise's world building. Within this loose narrative trilogy, Captain James T. Kirk met his son, David Marcus – neither of whom had met before – and Kirk witnessed the death of his best friend, Mr. Spock, in Khan. And in a startling reversal, rogue Klingons kill Kirk's son and Mr. Spock is “resurrected” in Search. Memorably, to save his life and those of his crew, Kirk must kill the franchise's most central character in Search: The USS Enterpriseitself. Nestled as the story-arc's midpoint, Search allowed the Star Trek franchise to mature and move beyond its television series roots. Released three years before the successor television series in the franchise, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Search delivers on poignant story arcs for its characters, particularly William Shatner's portrayal of Kirk. As Paramount released more films over the years, the fandom (i.e., Trekkies) settled on an “Odd-Even Rule” (i.e., the even-numbered films are often considered better than the odd-numbered ones). But that shorthand has often overlooked and underrated Search's significance to the franchise. Foremost, Search marks Leonard Nimoy's motion picture directorial debut, deftly balancing action, humor, and tension. Nimoy later garnered acclaim for his direction of Voyage and Three Men and a Baby, respectively. Further, Search formally introduced the grammar, syntax, andvocabulary for the Klingon language. The constructed language gained greater notoriety when its creator, Marc Okrand, and Pocket Books published The Klingon Dictionary in 1985. Moreover, Nimoy cast Christopher Llyod against type as the primary Klingon antagonist, Commander Kruge, and whose standout performance paved the way for his later iconic role as Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy. Lastly, Kirk's destruction of the USS Enterprise over the Genesis planet in Search would later introduce the USS Enterprise-A in Voyage, the replacement for the destroyedstarship, creating a legacy of distinguishing successor ships of the line with the next letter in the alphabet that has endured in the franchise. Join the Mint Condition crew of James, Joe, John, Josh, and Jack as we go behind the scenes and discus Search's history, our impressions when we saw the movie, and where the movie fits in the Star Trek film franchise today. Moreover, we discuss alternative castings and storylines, and does Search disprove the Odd-Even Rule. Because the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many.

Show notes provided by Joe Peluso As we approach the "dog days of summer" where the heat and humidity turn the tarred streets of NYC into taffy, we can find some solace from the elements in the back of the store at MINT CONDITION!Join your hosts James and Joe as they preview the All-In DC Initiative being spearheaded by Scott Snyder and Joshua Wiiliamson, a first reaction to the new Captain America: Brave New World trailer, speculative thoughts on the upcoming Fantastic Four film, the MCU easing up on released content, and a return to Robinson's and Harris"STARMAN. PHEW! That's a potpourri passel of palliative perusings!Sorry, my inner Stan Lee broke free for a moment there. Show notes provided by Jack Adrien From its humble beginnings selling textile remnants, three brothers founded Hassenfeld Brothers in Providence, Rhode Island, in late 1923. Some six decades later, and more than a few corporate evolutions, its corporate decedent, Hasbro Industries, found it easier to promote its toy and entertainment products (e.g., comic book publication) directly to its prime customers (i.e., children) via daily, syndicated thirty-minute animated television series. Given that Hassenfeld Brothers produced the first twelve-inch G.I. Joe “action figure” in 1964, the toyline stands as one of the company's notable legacy properties. Hasbro relaunched the property as G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, a 3.75-inch (9.5 centimeter) scale toyline in 1982 with a corresponding Marvel Comics series, leading to a five-part G.I. Joe mini-series in 1983 (later titled “The M.A.S.S. Device”), and the full G.I. Joe: Real American Hero series in 1985 that ran for ninety-five episodes, ending on Thursday, November 20, 1986. Originally planned for a theatrical release, unexpected production delays led to Hasbro releasing The Transformers: The Movie feature before G.I. Joe: The Movie. Moreover, the poor box office performance of fellow Hasbro-owned properties My Little Pony: The Movie on Friday, June 06, 1986, and The Transformers: The Movie release on Friday, August 08, 1986, respectively, led to Hasbro choosing to release the G.I. Joe feature film direct-to-video and airing on television in syndication, first in its entirety and later as a five-part miniseries. With a current 43 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating, G.I. Joe: The Movie neither captured the audience's imagination when it was released nor reignited nostalgic goodwill in the nearly forty years since. Whereas the visually dynamic three-minute opening sequence highlights everything we loved about the animated series, including the surprise revision of the show's theme song with Cobra-specific lyrics, the actual story was a hot mess. In a nutshell, the movie reveals that the Cobra terrorist organization was created by an ancient human/snake/insectoid hybrid Cobra-La civilization, led by Golobulus, refuged in the Himalayas as humanity evolved across the globe. Further, the movie retconned the Cobra leader, Cobra Commander, as a Cobra-La sleeper agent. Cobra-La's evil plan: launch hundreds of techno-organic pods into orbit to spread spores that will devolve humanity into mindless snake beasts. Serpentor (trust us, he would take too much time to explain in these show notes) leads Cobra's senior management to help Cobra-La execute its plan in exchange for preserving their humanity. Written by Ron Friedman, who also wrote The Transformers: The Movie, both movies share similar story elements (i.e., celebrity voice actors, new hero recruits, new antagonists, the “death” of a beloved leader, and a world-ending threat that requires the new leader to save the day). Join the Mint Condition crew of James, Kevin, Keith, and John as we discuss what works or doesn't with the new characters, uncredited story consultant and animated series wriBuzz Dixon's original story ideas, and so many missed opportunities. You will know the movie's true purpose (hint: introduce new characters to sell more toys) and unrealized potential. And knowing is half the battle. Yooo, Joe!

Show notes provided by Jack Adrien For more than thirty-five years, author Michael Jan Friedman has built a successful career as a writer of more than 80 fiction and non-fiction franchise novelizations and expanded universe stories including Star Trek, Star Wars, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Predator, andAliens, some of which have appeared on The New York Times Best Seller list. Moreover, Friedman has written more than 150 comic books, mostly for DC Comics, but also for Image Comics and Marvel Comics, respectively. In 2019, Friedman created the genre-busting Empty Space graphic novel with Brazilian artist Caio Cacau. This bold epic is an exciting blend of the action, detective, horror, science-fiction, thriller, and western genres. Empty Space introduced Robinson Dark, an amnesiac hero finding his way through Friedman's expansive world building. Now five years later, Friedman returns to his space adventure universe with Empty Space: Betrayal, a soon to be released full-length prose sequel funded through Kickstarter, taking us deeper into the mystery of Robinson Dark's past and the world in which he tries to fit in. Join the Mint Condition crew as we welcome Friedman back as one of our fan favorite guests. We discuss the inspiration for Robinson Dark as the protagonist, how Friedman conceived of the Empty Space universe, and how he considers his Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign as not only a platform to connect directly with his fans, but also an opportunity to offer valuable rewards for their support. Take a look behind the scenes at what will make Empty Space: Betrayal a worthy successor to its prequel and what continues to inspire the man who created it. Show notes provided by Jack Adrien Nearly forty-seven years ago and premiering in only forty-three theaters across the United States, George Lucas introduced the world to his epic space opera, Star Wars. And while the movie opened on Wednesday, May 25, 1977, Memorial Day weekend, the movie's catchphrase has thenceforth marked May 4 as National Star Wars Day. Inspired by the Buck Rogers science fiction comic strip and 12-part film serial from his youth, Lucas created his own enduring science fiction touchstones such as droids, the X-wing Starfighter, TIE Fighter, Millennium Falcon, and the Death Star. And while one should expect such futuristic technological wonders in a film of the genre, Lucas also found inspiration in Akira Kurosawa's samurai films, which led to the iconic lightsaber battles. In his review of the film, famed film critic Roger Ebert wrote "[t[he hardware is from Flash Gordon out of 2001, the chivalry is from Robin Hood, the heroes are from Westerns, and the villains are a cross between Nazis and sorcerers." Beyond its groundbreaking special effects, Star Wars birthed the world's first tentpole intellectual property empire. Part of what made the first film, Star Wars, later renamed Star Wars: A New Hope, unique was the concept of “the Force” within Lucas's worldbuilding. The movie deconstructs the classic notions of good v. evil and instead establishes opposing ideological perspectives tapping into or manipulating a metaphysical and ubiquitous power as either the light side (i.e., Jedi) or the dark side (i.e., Sith, said onscreen in the first movie of the second trilogy, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, released almost 22 years to the day of Star Wars: A New Hope's release date). But the first trilogy left us fans with so many unanswered questions. Most notably, the three movies featured only five space wizards (i.e., three Jedi and two Sith) across the three-film, six and a quarter hour total runtime. In Star Wars: A New Hope, Princess Leia and Obi-Wan Kenobi referenced the Clone Wars, giving us a peek into Lucas's fully realized, lived-in universe. We fans wanted more. And between movies and trilogies, Star Wars Legends (formerly known as the Expanded Universe) filled that void with licensed and official background stories through books, comic books, video games, spin-off films, television series, toys, and other media. Join the Mint Condition crew as we share what the first Star Wars film meant to us when it was released, what the franchise has meant for the near past half century, and where we hope it will take us in the years ahead. And as always, we say to you and yours, “May the Force be with you.”
