David Armstrong interviewed Golden Age great, Joe Simon in 1998 on set at San Diego Comic Con about his entry into Hearst comic strips in the 1930s, comic books in Funnies Inc and becoming Timely/Marvel Comics' first editor, meeting Jack Kirby at Victor Fox comics, Wonder Comics with Will Eisner's Wonder Man, Eisner and Iger's split, creating Captain America, leaving Timely for DC Comics, his relationship with Jack Liebowitz, Sandman & Boy Commandoes, his friend Charles Nicholas, Al Harvey, creating Romance Comics with Jack Kirby, their special contrast at Prize/Crestwood, leaving comic books and his encounter with Jim Steranko at the Harvey Thrillers line. Armstrong also interviewed Platinum and Golden Age superhero comic book medium cofounder, Vincent (Vin) Sullivan in 1998 on set at Long Island, New York about his beginnings as a sports cartoonist, entry into comic books with Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson's New Fun comics, their bullpen, meeting Creig Flessel, distribution through Independent News, encouraging Bob Kane to create his superhero (Batman), working with Whitney Ellsworth, overseeing Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's early comics, editing Action Comics 1 with the first appearance of Superman, editing the covers of Adventure comics, his failed cartoon strip with Jimmy Durante, observing Donenfeld and Liebowitz's take over of the company, leaving DC to start Magazine Enterprises, his editor Ray Krank, international distribution, and looking back at the comic book industry 50 years later. Acercándose al borde de la frontera entre siglos y con The Sandman terminada, la línea Vertigo avanzaba un poco a tientas a cualquiera que fuese su próximo destino. Con Predicador aún en pañales y con todos los grandes túmulos venideros aún por nacer, se aferraba como podía a la franquicia surgida del mundo creado por Neil Gaiman. Ese sello que ha pasado a la historia como la gran iniciativa de cómic de autor de DC, no dejaba de funcionar al final como un sello más de la gran editorial mainstream que eran, explotando el filón de los spin offs. Así a The Dreaming y Los Libros de la Magia, le seguiría The Sandman Presents y allí como por casualidad se encontraron por primera vez Lucifer y un escritor britñanico novato llamado Mike Carey. La cosa no iría mal y de nuevo sería la editorial la que encargase una serie regular, que comenzaría un tanto titubeante hasta la entrada del dibujante Peter Gross. Sería cuando surgiría la magia y el encargo se convertiría en una serie de autor, en una de las mejores y más injustamente pasadas por alto de la historia de Vertigo. La epopeya del Lucero del Alba en busca de su propia libertad imposible no tiene nada que envidiarle a los títulos Vertigo más sonoros y esperamos poder hacerle justicia con este podcast. According to Evanier, Kirby had no interest in horror comics, but created Mark Etrigan in response to DC's demand for a horror character. Kirby was annoyed that Etrigan's popularity forced him to abandon the Fourth World titles before he was done with them. Etrigan returned for a four-issue miniseries in 1987, written and illustrated by Matt Wagner. Alan Grant followed this with an Etrigan feature in Action Comics Weekly #636-641 and a second ongoing title in 1990. The 1990 series lasted 58 issues, two Annuals and one #0 issue. Garth Ennis took over the title beginning with issue #40. Ennis' run included the first appearance of his character Hitman. This series was followed by a miniseries, Driven Out. Following this, John Byrne's Blood of the Demon lasted 17 issues, and ignored much of the continuity that took place after Kirby's initial run. While his first monthly comic book series was short-lived, and his second was canceled after five years, Etrigan remains a popular supporting character with occasional additional miniseries.
