(Trick question: too much and not enough.) Find out the answers in "Dr. Death". Plus, as always, Ryan, Paul, and Max respond to listener feedback and play another round of the Dream Sequence. Tim and Frank take on a deceptively simple question: is Spider-Man actually a street-level superhero? What starts as a debate about subgenres turns into a much bigger conversation — about tone, stakes, and whether the label helps or hurts a character when your hero is literally swinging above the street. Beers of the Week Sam Adams Porch Rocker Lemon Radler (Frank) Stormalong Legendary Dry Hard Cider — Millis, MA (Tim) In this episode Sam Adams Porch Rocker returns — the annual visit, and this year it's slightly less tart (in a good way) Sam Adams's new can design — Sam covering his own letters with a raised mug (or is that Paul Revere? or Thomas Jefferson?) Stormalong dry cider, heirloom + bittersweet apples, and the cracking-tentacles Kraken can H.P. Lovecraft geography detour: Providence vs. Newport, the racism asterisk, where Arkham actually came from The main question: is Spider-Man a street-level superhero at all? Defining street-level: it's about the tone and the stakes, not the powers — Daredevil pounds the tar, Batman is technically anything but blue-collar Peter Parker's sci-fi problem: his origin is basically Fantastic Four, the web shooters make him genius-tier, and Frank once asked his dad to build a pair Kraven the Hunter's magic jungle potion goes golfing A live tally of Spider-Man's rogues gallery — chameleon, vulture, Doc Ock, Sandman, Lizard, Electro, Mysterio, Green Goblin, Kraven, Scorpion, Morbius, Venom — and where each one lands on street / middle / cosmic The verdict: 5 street, 6 in-between, 1 cosmic — Spider-Man's distribution skews low-end, but he's genuinely hard to pin down "Spider-Man is a street-level hero the same way Breaking Bad is a show about a chemistry teacher." — the Breaking Bad Test Why pigeonholing hurts long-lived characters, and why the supporting cast is really what makes a hero viable Reading from Superman: The Never-Ending Battle by Roger Stern — Clark Kent finally becomes Superman across an entire beautiful page of prose Find us at beerwithgeeks.com — like, subscribe, leave a rating, and tell a friend.

Their killer may still be walking those woods. On June 12, 1977, hundreds of girls arrived at Camp Scott in Locust Grove, Oklahoma for the start of summer. By the next morning, three of them were gone. Lori Farmer, age 8. Doris Denise Milner, age 10. Michelle Gussie, age 9. The last thing Lori did was write a letter home to her family. What makes this case even more disturbing: weeks before the murders, a threatening note was found on camp property. It read, "We are on a mission to kill three girls in one tent." Camp directors assumed it was a prank and threw it away. The prime suspect was Gene Leroy Hart, a member of the Cherokee Nation known throughout his community as the Sandman, a man believed to be a shapeshifter. Detectives reported seeing a black dog following them through the woods during the investigation, one that would vanish without a trace. Hart died in prison before a conviction. In 2022, DNA evidence strongly suggested his guilt. The case remains officially unsolved.Oh, and Kristin Chenoweth was supposed to be at that camp. She was sick and stayed home.

Who is Sadie Sink playing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and why won't Marvel just confirm that the answer is Firestar? We take a minute to discuss this before diving into our review of "Spider-Man Unmasked!" in which the Spider-Friends go on vacation at the same place as Flash Thompson and decide to ruin his life (again). Because Peter Parker decides to change into his Spider-Man costume while hiding behind a sandcastle on the beach, Sandman discovers Peter's secret identity, because of course the sandcastle was actually Sandman (go with it). Angelica's solution is to trick Flash into putting on a Spider-Man costume and put him next to civilian-clad Peter, so as to confuse Sandman into thinking he didn't know what went on. Which was worse for Flash, this or the Video-Man episode? Hard to say. Next episode: July 5th livestream on our YouTube channel!! We're re-enacting the Chameleon episode. Marshall shares his journey from investment banking and WarnerMedia to launching Animal Capital, a venture firm that has backed companies like Whatnot, Underdog Fantasy Sports, and Colossal Biosciences. The discussion dives into why Marshall believes showing up in person still matters, how he thinks about building trust with founders and investors, and why Animal Capital has intentionally stayed away from many of the industry's biggest hype cycles. He also shares his perspective on what makes a great founder, the importance of storytelling when raising capital, and why some of the best opportunities can be found outside traditional startup hubs.Marshall also talks about his growing presence on social media, his commitment to publishing daily content for founders and investors, and how sharing practical lessons online has helped entrepreneurs connect with him directly. In this episode, Allan McKay sits down with Hnedel Maximore, VFX Supervisor on Spider-Noir, and Brooke Noska, VFX Producer on the series, for a deep dive into the creative, technical, and production challenges behind one of the most visually distinctive Spider-Man projects to date. Hnedel and Brooke break down how they approached Spider-Noir as a grounded detective noir with superhero elements — balancing period-specific world-building, practical production choices, invisible visual effects, and large-scale hero sequences without letting the VFX overwhelm the story. They discuss the early pitch process, building alignment with showrunners and department heads, and why visual effects needed to be involved from pre-production through final delivery. The conversation gets into the unique black-and-white and color workflow for the show, including the technical lift of supporting both versions, building a pipeline across multiple vendors, protecting the noir look while preserving the richness of the color version, and managing the added storage, editorial, review, render, and QC demands that came with that process. They also discuss the importance of reference, from classic noir films and early color processes to nature, micro-photography, ceramics, period New York construction photography, and practical on-set artifacts. Hnedel and Brooke share how those references informed Sandman, Man-Spider, dream sequences, period Manhattan, and the tactile, organic feel of the series. This is a must-listen for VFX artists, supervisors, producers, filmmakers, and Spider-Man fans interested in how large-scale visual effects are planned, produced, supervised, reviewed, and delivered on a major television schedule — especially when the creative goal is not just spectacle, but a world that feels specific, cinematic, painful, grounded, and one-of-a-kind.

It's time to talk about "Double Cross," the third episode of Spider-Noir, which is perhaps our most plot-heavy installment yet! In discussing the "intricate web" that this show weaves, we discuss the violence and language employed on this show (in a way that works), how Spider-Noir weaves race into its narrative in an intentional way, and how it smartly (and sparingly) returns to the things the show does well. Does "Double Cross" introduce Tombstone? We discuss the newest super-powered human. Joey talks about how he was emotionally affected by Sandman's storyline before making a big discovery about his favorite character on the show. We break down the big showdown and the series' second cliffhanger, and how that makes sense given the directorial duties on the show. This episode (and the next) were helmed by Nzingha Stewart, who is only Cage's second (!) female director; this discovery leads us down a Cage VOD rabbit hole and into the blur of his 2010s movies. Lastly: who got shot?!

This week, DtW answers: What if your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man wasn't so friendly, so modern or so colorful? Spider-Noir is on Prime Video so Dan and Raul can decide what they think about Nic Cage's take on Pet... er, Ben Riley actually! Probably due to contracts, there are no Parkers in this black and white private detective tale that puts the current Spider-Man a 1930s New York City that shoots a lot like modern Los Angeles, but there are plenty of powered up weirdos filling newspaper pages. Some characters are old fashioned takes on previously seen villains like The Sandman, alongside new foes like Tombstone as well as classic Spidey fodder, organized crime. The first two eps covered on this pod give you a great taste of what's to come throughout the series, so come light up your big ol' bug eyes and check it out!

Straight Outta Marvel: A Moon Knight Aftershow

The trench coat is back, the mask is on, and Ben Reilly is officially back in the web-slinging saddle—even if his superhero rust just accidentally saved a mob boss. This week, we are breaking down a massive double-header: Episode 2 ("Tread Lightly") and Episode 3 ("Double Cross") of Spider-Noir.We dive deep into the expanding, gritty landscape of 1930s New York, tracking the clues from Flint Marko's ransacked apartment all the way to the Hooverville raids.Inside This Week's Briefing:The Relapsed Hero: Ben poses as a spectacled plumber to get his gear back, puts Silvermane on notice, and then... completely ruins a police stakeout. We break down that glorious, chaotic car-surfing action sequence and Nic Cage's peak Bogart voice.Sympathy for the "Villains": Spider-Noir is flipping the script on classic Spidey rogues. We react to the live-action debuts of a deteriorating Flint Marko (Sandman) and Lonnie Lincoln (Tombstone) being portrayed as tragic, protective figures rather than outright monsters.Robbie Robertson on the Beat: Robbie gets a firsthand look at the corruption plaguing the city, only for the Daily Bugle to twist the narrative into anti-powered propaganda. We discuss how deep Mayor Morris and Silvermane's ties really go.Cat Hardy's Double Game: Is she a client, a victim, or the mastermind who leaked the liquor transfer in the first place? We map out the clues pointing directly back to The Alcove.Listener Question of the Week: How do you feel about the show turning Sandman and Tombstone's comic book reputations into in-universe political propaganda? Hit us up in the comments or drop us a review with your theories!Don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe to the feed. Tread lightly out there, listeners.

Nicolas Cage is BACK in the Noir and we're already hooked. Sarah and Will break down Spider-Noir Episode 1 "Step My Office," Marvel's live-action series starring Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a 1930s Spider-Man navigating Depression-era New York crime noir. Then we flip to a galaxy far, far away: the Mandalorian and Grogu movie just hit theaters. Epic Star Wars adventure, or just a long Mandalorian episode in a tuxedo? #CageClub is back, and it's a brand new era and a brand new area: TV! After addressing our plans to cover the rest of Spider-Noir on a weekly basis (as well as the two movies we missed), we step into the office with, well, "Step Into My Office." We talk about how this series feels bigger (in terms of critical reception and coverage) than a Cage property has in years, the impact of watching it in black and white (versus choosing the color option), and the extensive New York Times interview just published this week. Then, we dive into the details of the first episode. We have questions, like: Ben Reilly? Is he connected at all to the much-maligned comic series with that character? We talk about the film skipping a traditional origin story for, essentially, a second-origin story for Cage's character. We explore the rogues' gallery starting to take shape - including Silvermane, Sandman, and Black Cat - and how the show exceeding our expectations in spite of some recent superhero burnout. We also discuss how the show nails its noir trappings, and we wonder what's next for this character.

On this episode of 83 Weeks, Eric Bischoff and Conrad Thompson are back to tackle some of the biggest talking points in professional wrestling today. Eric weighs in on why WWE keeps returning to Las Vegas and what makes the city such a reliable hub for major events. Bischoff also breaks down the business logic behind bringing celebrities into main events, explaining why it continues to be a winning formula when done right. Plus, he shares his candid thoughts on WrestleMania becoming increasingly packed with commercials, and why that approach can both help and hurt the overall product. The conversation heats up as Eric questions whether Brock Lesnar is truly finished with wrestling, and offers some strong advice to WWE on protecting the momentum of rising star Oba Femi. And in a fun twist, Conrad draws comparisons between Danhausen and The Sandman, asking whether Danhausen's personality could be this generation's version of the hardcore icon.
