Read transcriptThe year was 2006. The Game Boy Advance was winding down, the Justice League animated series had wrapped up, and someone at WayForward Technologies looked at a tiny handheld screen and said, “You know what this needs? The Flash. Running very fast. On a cartridge the size of a business card.” And honestly? Bold decision. Justice League Heroes: The Flash took the Game Boy Advance, the beloved animated series, and a Justice League comic run and asked the eternal question: how many Rogues can you stuff into a handheld beat-em-up before the whole thing starts wobbling? This episode, we're finding out. We're covering the comics, the game, the cartoon connections, and whether Barry Allen or Wally West gets more respect in a world that keeps giving them both the speed force and zero chill. Joining us to run this whole thing down is Marrilee O'Neil from Fear Coded, who brings exactly the right energy for a conversation about a game that moves fast and expects you to keep up. So strap in, try not to blink, and let's do this before the Flash gets impatient and reruns the episode himself. Learn such things as: Why couldn't this have just been part of Justice League Heroes? What is the best way to experience time manipulation? Does it really matter if you get to play as Wally or Barry here? And so much more! You can find Merrilee being the main driver of the Fear Coded account on BlueSky @fearcodedpod.bsky.social on her podcast Fear Coded. Green Lantern #34 sets up future developments with Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner while introducing the mysterious Toby Y2K, and Justice League Unlimited #18 examines the controversial decision to grant villains amnesty in the face of larger threats. Harley Quinn #61 leans into the split between Harley's personalities with the Bat-Quinn concept, while Harley & Ivy: Life and Crimes #5 slows things down with character work at Ma Hunkel's home and a Clayface cliffhanger. The Brutal Dark #3 builds its noir mystery around Ezra Kane with deeper connections to the museum heist and missing persons case. The episode also includes discussion of industry news, including layoffs and broader market trends, along with thoughts on speculation around current titles. As always, Jace and Rocky run down reprints, facsimiles, and collected editions, rank every book from the week, and each give their pick for Book of the Week.

As part of the Comic Boom! and Comic Source collaboration, this DC Spotlight for the week of January 28, 2026 finds Jace and Rocky breaking down a packed slate of fourteen DC releases, with discussion opening on the passing and legacy of Sal Buscema before turning to the week's books. DC KO: The Kids Are All Fight Special #1 is examined for its focus on younger heroes and its place as a largely skippable but well-drawn tie-in, while Detective Comics #1105 continues Tom Taylor's "The Courage That Kills" arc with deeper insight into the Lion's origin and Gotham's escalating crisis. Harley Quinn #58 is discussed as the start of a new arc that feels tonally familiar, followed by the Supergirl Next Door Valentine's anthology, which offers mixed results across stories spotlighting Supergirl, Jay Garrick, Poison Ivy, Guy Gardner, Wonder Woman, Swamp Thing, Martian Manhunter, and Green Arrow. Green Lantern #31 features a nostalgic Hal Jordan and Barry Allen team-up that advances Jeremy Adams' larger arc in subtle ways, while Superman #34 pushes Superboy Prime further into moral conflict against the Dark Legion. Absolute Martian Manhunter #8 stands out for its conceptual storytelling and increased narrative momentum, The Flash #29 introduces Dream Girl as a potential crack in Darkseid's Legion, and Harley and Ivy: Love and Crimes #3 explores the early dynamics between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy with a more grounded emotional approach. Justice League Unlimited #15 and Justice League Red #6 wrap major threads involving Neuron, time-displaced heroes, and Red Tornado's reckoning, while Absolute Batman #16 delivers a character-driven underworld journey with Wonder Woman that highlights Bruce Wayne's loyalty and sacrifice. Absolute Flash #11 provides major revelations about the Still Point and the source of Wally West's power, and Absolute Wonder Woman #16 launches the "Season of the Witch" arc with Absolute Zatanna and a reimagined Suicide Squad, setting the stage for one of the week's most consequential confrontations.

Show notes provided by Joe PelusoWE DID IT!! Your "crisis crew" of James, Keith, Richie, and Joe havesuccessfully navigated the madness of the multiverse and completedtheir review of "Crisis on Infinite Earths".The twelve chapter event, that changed fifty years of DC Comics history, was the challengingassignment that the guys undertook to put their insightful spin on amonumental classic story. Worlds lived and died, new characters wereintroduced, while some old ones went away for a long time. Chaoticbattles, base betrayals, power, pathos, and peril all came to the forein a saga that left the comic book reading world stunned andsurprised. While changes were made it wasn't a total housing cleaning, butmore of a cosmic rearranging of the furniture. The Monitor, The AntiMonitor, the new Dr. Light, Alexander Luthor, Harbinger and othersburst on the scene. But the stakes were so high that Barry Allen, KaraZor-El, Wonder Woman, and many others did not make it out alive. Magicmet super science, and super-heroics aligned with vile villainy all inan attempt to save creation across the multiverse. When the dust hadsettled, new heroes rose up to take on the mantles of beloved iconswho had perished. A troubled teen became a man to carry on his uncle'slegacy, and thus Wally West became The Flash. A new Earth had emergedfrom the cosmological chaos, but still a world in need of heroes. Whatfollowed shortly in DC's publishing line were a spate of new seriesthat delineated the landscape of this "brave new world". But was everything now set in stone, were the pieces in all theright places? Those questions and more were tackled by your hosts, asthey (like the survivors of this "crisis") struggled a bit with thenew status quo. But when talented creatives like George Perez and MarvWolman are involved in epic storytelling, does it really matter if allthe toys don't make it back into one box? If you have never read C.O.I.E., we sincerely hope our audaciousanalysis will spur you on to pick it up, and join us in the pleasureof reading the greatest comic book event of all time!

What inspired this approach, and what does it reveal about Wally's character?Jeff, you've tackled deeply personal, introspective stories before. How does Absolute Flash balance superhero spectacle with the kind of emotional storytelling you're known for?Nick, this series presents a unique visual challenge since Wally doesn't have the Speed Force in the usual sense. Jace chats with writer Jeff Lemire and artist Nick Robles about their upcoming title for the Absolute Universe line at DVC Comics, Absolute Flash. Jeff talks about getting a chance to crafat a new version of the Flash without the history which can, at times, be restricting. Likewise, Nick discusses the feeling that his art may not be best suited to a Flash book, but when he gets the chance to work on a new version of Wally West and lean into the emotions of the character, his art is, in fact, perfectly suited for this book. Plus hints of the rogues, and a tease for what's to come for young Wallace West as he comes to terms with his new abilities.

It's the final lap of our epic look at every issue of this legendary run! With Linda Park erased from history and Wally West merged with the Speed Force (again), a grimmer and grittier speedster takes over Flash duty. We'll talk about the end of Mark Waid's (and Brian Augustyn's) tenure on the title, the transition to the Geoff Johns era, and the awkward batch of issues in between. Plus, we offer our highlights and lowlights of the entire run and reflect on the big picture: what these hundred-plus issues meant to us and to the development of superhero comics as a whole. Discussed in this episode: Flash #151-163, plus other stories. We couldn't have done this without the support of our backers! Help support us at patreon.com/ironageofcomics !
