The striking parallels between wheat rust and global human epidemics. Special Guest: Dave Hodson.

Matthew Rouse is the 2018 recipient of the Norman Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application. He is being recognized for his work developing new breeds of wheat that are resistant to Ug99, a devastating type of stem rust.

UG99 is a deadly disease affecting wheat and is spreading rapidly throughout the world. The IAEA is releasing resistant wheat varieties as well as providing training in mutation techniques to countries for combating its spread.

A new strain of wheat rust - known as Ug99 - is decimating wheat fields worldwide. But help could be at hand in the form of nuclear science. The Joint Division of the IAEA and the UN´s Food and Agriculture Organization has brought together experts from around the world to develop Ug99 resistant wheat varieties by using radiation to induce mutations in seeds. Louise Potterton spoke to one of the experts, William Wagoire from Uganda, who first detected the new strain.
