Will we ever reach a conclusive, agreed-upon theory of consciousness?Over the millennia of recorded history, countless stories, theories, and arguments have emerged to explain the origins of consciousness. And yet, here we are in 2025 - post-Plato, post-Descartes, post-scientific revolution - and still we don't understand the phenomenon of conscious, subjective experience. Which begs the question: will we ever truly know what consciousness is, and how it functions?Robert Lawrence Kuhn is the co-creator, executive producer, writer, and host of 'Closer To Truth', the PBS/public television series on cosmos, life, mind, and meaning that presents leading scientists, philosophers, and creative thinkers discussing the fundamental questions of existence. Join him in conversation with post-realist philosopher Hilary Lawson as they cast their eyes over the hundreds of different theories of consciousness.Don't hesitate to email us at podcast@iai.tv with your thoughts or questions on the episode! To witness such debates live buy tickets for our upcoming festival: https://howthelightgetsin.org/festivals/And visit our website for many more articles, videos, and podcasts like this one: https://iai.tv/You can find everything we referenced here: https://linktr.ee/philosophyforourtimesSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
For those who have accepted the boat of the lotus feet of the Lord, who is the shelter of the cosmic manifestation and is famous as Murāri, the enemy of the Mura demon, the ocean of the material world is like the water contained in a calf's hoof-print. Their goal is paraṁ padam, Vaikuṇṭha, the place where there are no material miseries, not the place where there is danger at every step. In the spiritual world, this is the norm: that every gait is a dance, every word is a song. So the spiritual world is not void, and Kṛṣṇa is not alone, but the spiritual world is where all the living entities who are enlightened and in love with Kṛṣṇa reside. The material world is a little lonely because we are separated from the light of the spiritual worlds and from Kṛṣṇa. So the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam brings our attention to the portals through which we can see the spiritual world and understand it. It's not illogical. In the Bhagavad-gītā, Kṛṣṇa says, "ūrdhva-mūlam adhaḥ-śākham aśvatthaṁ prāhur avyayam chandāṁsi yasya parṇāni yas taṁ veda sa veda-vit," that this material world is a reflection of the spiritual world. We see variety here, but the variety here is temporary. It has a shelf life. Whatever we want to embrace here, whatever we want to taste here, has a beginning and an end. It's a temporary world because it's a reflection of the spiritual world. So the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam says that the mission of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is "reality distinguished from illusion for the benefit of all." If I try to embrace an illusory apple, a reflection on the water, this is folly; I won't be able to eat it. But the substance is there in the spiritual world. So Brahmā gives this explanation of how one can see Kṛṣṇa. He says, "Although Kṛṣṇa is transcendental form is presented as black." Devotees who are in love with the Supreme Personality of Godhead appreciate the Lord as Śyāmasundara, having a very beautiful, blackish form. The Lord's form is so beautiful that the Brahma-saṁhitā also states, "veṇuṁ kvaṇantam aravinda-dalāyatākṣaṁ barhāvataṁsam asitāmbuda-sundarāṅgam / kandarpa-koṭi-kamanīya-viśeṣa-śobhaṁ / govindam ādipuruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi... I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord who plays on His transcendental flute. His eyes are like lotus flowers. He is decorated with peacock plumes, and his bodily color resembles the color of a fresh black cloud. Although his bodily features are more beautiful than millions of Cupids, this beauty of the Supreme Lord can be seen by devotees who are in love with him, devotees whose eyes are anointed with the love of Godhead: 'Premāñjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena.' ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #prabhupadapicks #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose
“Prabhupada Picks” refers to a selection of verses from the 10th Canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam that Srila Prabhupada memorized himself and quoted very frequently in his teachings. List of verses are in the description here: https://youtu.be/8teL06bAL1o Verse for discussion: https://vedabase.io/en/library/sb/10/1/13 ------------------------------------------------------------ My friend, Dave Dibberne, I forget which birthday it was. He was so fanatical about music that for his birthday he asked for a particular record. Unfortunately, he asked everybody for it. Kids, in the old days, there used to be records. There were no computers, live streams, or anything like that. You would get a vinyl disc, this big. It was called a 45. It had to play on a turntable, just bringing it up to speed. It's a physical object. It had two songs, one on each side. That's all you got. It cost a couple of dollars, and that was a lot of money back then. He got the same song from seven people. It was called “Monday, Monday.” He tried to listen as much as he could, but after a while, he just got really tired of it, and he didn't like the song anymore. He wished he had asked for something else. And that's what happens in the material world. Everyone wishes they asked for something else after a while, because whatever we get here, it gets old, fast or slow. Either way, it runs out. We run out of thirst for it. But spiritual thirst, you can go on drinking. You can go on hearing that is over and over again, and it never gets old. No one's ever complained that the Bhagavad Gita is boring because every time you hear it, it has new meaning. Srimad Bhagavatam is something you can embark upon for your lifetime. This lifetime, if you would like, you can volunteer today. We're going to put it out there on the table, to read and dedicate the rest of your life to hearing the Srimad Bhagavatam. Get a PhD in the Srimad Bhagavatam. Am I making sense? And I guarantee you won't come to the end of it, even if you spend the rest of your life studying the Srimad Bhagavatam very deeply every day with full concentration, you will have bouts of ecstasy in reading The Bhagavatam, listening to the verses, the poem, the poetics of it, and also the very contact with the sound vibration will enliven you. This is the beautiful statement of Srila Prabhupada that: "The entire world is suffering because of spiritual thirst." And so you can make it your mission if you want to do something good for people — to help quench their thirst spiritually. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------
Daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī, mama māyā duratyayā. Mām eva ye prapadyante, māyām etāṁ taranti te. That means that the material world is too complicated; nobody can ever figure it out. Why are you in so much anxiety? Because everyone, from the ant to Lord Brahmā, is. So, there's a resort: it's the holy name. It's the only resort. Don't feel bad about being in anxiety. Everybody's in anxiety because the material world is duratyayā. Don't try to fix it by figuring it out—you can't do it, it's impossible. But if you take shelter of the holy name and just say, "Kṛṣṇa, you're my only resort. I'm just taking shelter of You, please show me the way, and please show me how to figure out this complicated mess I'm in here in the material world." Just keep doing that and put that into The Holy Name and take shelter take shelter take shelter, over and over again. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #japajolt #makejapagreatagain #mantrameditation #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose
Historically, some industrial activities have elicited strong views from the public. Finding the balance between interest and accessibility without bias can be a challenge. Understandably, many companies are nervous of lighting the touchpaper of public opinion and over time this reticence about sharing the details of industrial processes can lead to a lack of public understanding about how things are made. There are thousands of people doing jobs that aren't well known, digging up rocks at unprecedented scales all over the world. An increasingly complex supply chain with countless processes convert natural resources into something useful. With critical minerals ever more in the headlines, it is critical that the public understand what it takes to produce the goods and services that support their modern lifestyles, as well as the multitude of roles and wealth of expertise that are the backbone of the industries. Good communication can ignite the interest of the next generation, who are going to be needed as part of the growing workforce in these sectors. “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.'” - Hebrews 13:5Sports betting is more popular—and more accepted—than ever, even among Christians. But is it just harmless fun, or something more? Dr. David W. Jones returns to our financial ethics series to help us examine what Scripture says about gambling and how believers should approach it.Dr. David W. Jones is Senior Professor of Christian Ethics at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds a Ph.D. in Christian Financial Ethics and is the author of Every Good Thing: An Introduction to the Material World and the Common Good for Christians. What Does Scripture Say About Gambling?Proverbs 13:11 reminds us that:“Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.”Gambling, which includes sports betting, bypasses God's designed rhythm of work and reward. 1 Timothy 6:9 warns that the desire to get rich quickly leads people into “ruin and destruction.” These verses challenge the notion that a fast win is simply a blessing—it may erode character. Is it always wrong to bet on a game with friends? Not necessarily. A one-time bracket pool during March Madness may not signal a deep moral compromise. But we must ask: Is this behavior occasional and harmless, or has it become habitual and idolatrous? The difference lies in the heart. It's not that gambling created the idolatry of money or sports—it revealed it. And perhaps in God's grace, it's giving us an opportunity to examine what we truly worship. The Stewardship QuestionEvery financial decision we make is a stewardship decision. Psalm 24:1 reminds us:“The earth is the Lord's and everything in it.”So before we spend God's money—even on entertainment—we must ask: Is this wise? Does this reflect my faith? Does it honor the Lord?We must start to think through whether our spending on gambling—even recreationally—glorifies God. That doesn't mean all entertainment is wrong. But we are called to be faithful managers of what belongs to God, and some forms of entertainment carry higher risks than others.Beyond personal stewardship, Christians must consider what they're supporting. The gambling industry is responsible for significant harm. Studies show that 1 in 5 gambling addicts attempt suicide, and addiction is rising fastest among young adults, according to the American Psychological Association. For those in the church, we must acknowledge this cultural shift and lovingly walk alongside people through it, offering them truth, grace, and accountability.Idolatry, Discontentment, and the Way BackSports betting may be legal, but legality is not the same as morality, and morality isn't always wisdom. If your habits reflect discontentment or a misplaced trust in money, that's a red flag. But there's hope. These things are not the unpardonable sin. 1 John 1:9 reminds us: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us... God is always ready to receive us.”Isaiah 26:3 also says:“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.”If you're struggling with a gambling habit or questioning your motivations, seek accountability at your local church. And if addiction is involved, please pursue professional help. Freedom is possible—and peace is found not in the thrill of a win, but in keeping your eyes on Christ.Remember: just because it's permissible doesn't mean it's wise. True freedom is found not in betting on uncertain outcomes, but in trusting the God who holds the future. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm trying to understand where tax-free municipal bonds might fit into my overall investment strategy. How can they be used effectively for tax efficiency and generating income, and when would it make sense to include them in a portfolio?I have $19,000 sitting in an old 401(k) account, and I'm considering transferring it into a fixed annuity. I'm not retired yet and plan to return to work in the school system. One option offers lifetime income starting at age 74, but I'm not sure if that's the best use of my funds. What should I consider before making this decision?I'm in the process of updating my will now that I've moved to Texas. I'm wondering if it would be more in line with God's will to allocate a percentage of my estate to the three nonprofit ministries I support, rather than dividing everything evenly among my three children. How should I think through this decision from a biblical perspective?Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)Every Good Thing: An Introduction to the Material World and the Common Good for Christians by Dr. David W. EPISODE 141 | Spirits in the Material World: Mediums and Spiritualism The late 19th and early 20th were rife with claims of contact with spirits of the departed, and plenty of people made a pretty penny convincing the grieving or the curious that they had the right stuff, the special connection to the Other Side. But it has continued past then, and even today there are those who would prey upon people to make a fast buck, supercharging the woo space in the process. We'll look at mediums, magicians, seances, channelers and more, including some of the tricks these con artists use to ply their ignoble trade. And we'll also examine what's up with the Ouija board. “A faithful man will abound with blessings, but whoever hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.” - Proverbs 28:20Powerball jackpots and scratch-off tickets might seem like a shortcut to financial freedom, but should Christians be buying in? Dr. David W. Jones returns to our financial ethics series today to help us think biblically about the lottery and whether it aligns with a life of faithful stewardship.Dr. David W. Jones is Senior Professor of Christian Ethics at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds a Ph.D. in Christian Financial Ethics and is the author of Every Good Thing: An Introduction to the Material World and the Common Good for Christians.Quick Wealth vs. Steady StewardshipProverbs 13:11 warns, “Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.” Hebrews 13:5 exhorts believers to “keep your life free from the love of money and be content with what you have.” These passages highlight the value of work, patience, and contentment—virtues that stand in direct contrast to the quick-fix allure of lottery winnings. The lottery promises flourishing without labor, but God's design in Genesis 1 calls us to be co-creators with Him—to work, to produce, and to flourish through effort. Skipping that process isn't just unwise—it violates God's design for human flourishing. Is playing the lottery merely harmless entertainment? We should pay close attention to what our financial decisions reveal: Jesus taught, ‘Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also' (Matt. 6:21). If someone regularly spends money on lottery tickets, it could point to deeper issues—discontentment, greed, or misplaced hope.Scripture reminds us in Proverbs 23:7, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” Our actions—including how we spend—are often the most honest indicators of our spiritual condition.Entertainment or Exploitation? While scratching a ticket at a birthday party may seem harmless, there's a big difference between a one-time event and a habitual lifestyle of gambling. And even if the act is permissible, that doesn't make it wise (1 Cor. 10:23).We must also consider the industry behind the lottery. It preys upon the poor. Statistics show that the lowest-income Americans buy more than half of all lottery tickets, with some spending up to 6% of their income. In many ways, it functions like a regressive tax, taking from those who can least afford it.Some believers wonder whether it's ethical to accept scholarships or grants funded by state lotteries. Of course, there's room for Christian liberty here. Some will choose to opt-out due to conscience. Others will recognize we live in a fallen world and may receive such benefits without directly participating in the system. Either way, we should be aware of what we're engaging with and remain open before the Lord.A Better Way to FlourishIf you're feeling convicted, confess it to the Lord. ‘If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us' (1 John 1:9). And as with any area of struggle, don't walk alone. Seek accountability and encouragement through your local church.Ultimately, the Christian life invites us to a different kind of richness—one rooted not in luck or chance but in trust and obedience. As Ecclesiastes 3:13 says, “Everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God's gift to man.”For more biblical insight on wealth and stewardship, pick up Dr. David W. “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” - Proverbs 19:17As Christians, we're called to be generous, but what does that look like when someone asks for money on the street? Should we give? Is there a better way to help? Today, Dr. David W. Jones joins us to explore the ethics of giving to homeless people and how to show compassion without causing harm.Dr. David W. Jones is Senior Professor of Christian Ethics at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds a Ph.D. in Christian Financial Ethics and is the author of Every Good Thing: An Introduction to the Material World and the Common Good for Christians.A Biblical Call to Care for the PoorScripture is clear about God's concern for the poor and His expectation that we share that concern. Jesus said, “Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you” (Matthew 5:42). The apostle John echoed this, writing, “If anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?” (1 John 3:17).We should want to help those in need. The real question isn't whether we help, but how. Before we give, we should examine our hearts, because our initial reaction may often be judgmental, as we may assume that the person is lazy or addicted. But Dr. Jones calls this being “middle class in spirit”. Christ doesn't call us to be “middle class in spirit”—He calls us to be “poor in spirit” (Matthew 5:3).This shift in mindset is essential. Even if someone is unworthy of help, that's the very reason we should want to help them. What if God waited until we deserved His grace? Is It Wrong to Give Cash? That leads to the practical question: Should we give cash to someone on the street? While the act of providing cash isn't inherently wrong, it could enable harmful behavior.Instead, it may be more beneficial to prepare in advance by carrying granola bars or other non-perishable food items. Offer something that meets a need without enabling sin. If you have the time, offer to buy them a meal instead. This kind of planned generosity helps believers act as good stewards, offering love without ignoring potential consequences. But what if the person uses the money responsibly? Should we just leave that up to God?There's a balance because we can't know everything about someone's situation in a brief moment, but we are still called to be wise and loving. That means doing what we can with what we know, and entrusting the rest to the Lord. When a Handout Becomes a RelationshipSometimes, opportunities arise to do more than just meet an immediate need. Perhaps that involves building long-term relationships with individuals experiencing poverty or homelessness. These acts of sustained compassion often lead to deep transformation when we take the time to build a relationship with those who are struggling. This is an example of a development-based model of helping the poor, which contrasts with an aid-based model (like giving money or food on the spot). If a natural disaster causes poverty, aid is appropriate. However, if it's due to systemic injustice or poor choices, long-term involvement—such as discipleship, mentoring, and support—may be necessary.Overwhelmed by Need? Start With What's NearA common question is: Where do I even begin? The need is everywhere. The law of moral proximity encourages that we are most responsible for those closest to us. You may not be able to fix world hunger, but you can help someone in your neighborhood, church, or community.Big problems require big solutions, but God calls us to care for what's in front of us first. Our goal isn't just charity—it's Christlike love, expressed with wisdom. When we begin by checking our hearts, planning for wise giving, and staying open to deeper relationships, we reflect God's grace in practical ways.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I was affected by the Windfall Elimination Provision, but recently received a lump sum check related to that. Once, when we were in a spot where there was no light whatsoever, no moon and no cities nearby, I stepped out of the car, and the stars were so bright, I was almost knocked on my back. I had an existential moment thinking, "Oh, I'm in a universe I forgot. And look at all these planets that abound." There's a universal form of the Lord described in the Bhagavad-gītā and the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. But beyond that, there's the original beauty of the Supreme Personality of God Himself that's so captivating that He's known as Kṛṣṇa. It means He captivates everyone. There was a song written by George Harrison many years ago, "There's something in the way she moves." Actually it was originally "in the way He moves," but the producers thought, "Well, that won't fly." He was talking about Kṛṣṇa, "That attracts me like no other lover," and he was just singing a song. And there are myriad songs, not just from one who heard about Kṛṣṇa from someone else, but you go to the great ācāryas and poets, and they'll be saying—they'll—they'll want to write the choicest poetry. That's why Kṛṣṇa is called uttama-śloka. Everyone wants to write something to try to describe the limit of Kṛṣṇa's beauty, and they never get to that point of describing the limit, because it's unlimited. It's always becoming more beautiful and more captivating. And without this beauty, we're relegated to the reflection of beauty in the material world. Whatever natural scene we see, if you've ever noticed, it can't completely satisfy the heart. It doesn't reciprocate. There's a verisimilitude. It's the reflection of reality, and therefore we're attracted to it, and it's breathtaking for a moment, but you can't keep it within you. You can't—it doesn't reciprocate with you. But Kṛṣṇa is beauty, because His beauty, His opulence is non-different from Himself. By seeing Kṛṣṇa, the ultimate object for the for meditation—dheyam sadā—one can continuously, says the Bhāgavatam, look at Kṛṣṇa's beauty, and you'll never get tired of it. Other scenes you make you might get used to. If you've seen the ocean enough times, then you think, "Oh, I'm going to go somewhere else." Seeing enough sunsets, you forget about it, like, "Oh, that's suns to get in my eyes. Close the curtains. Let's watch TV." The Bhāgavatam says that everyone's looking for that beauty everywhere. There's never a time we're satisfied by it, until we see Kṛṣṇa, who's the source of all beauty. And this is what's available through bhakti-yoga—is the beautiful form of Kṛṣṇa and the descriptions of His beauty. And Rūpa Gosvāmī said, "This is the second element by which one doesn't even care about—" one who has seen the beauty of Kṛṣṇa and is pursuing the beauty of Kṛṣṇa no longer cares about liberation. They're only addicted to that. "I just want to see the beauty of Kṛṣṇa." ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------
We roar back into life for our 2025 season with the podcast crossover that nobody but us was asking for, as co-host of venerated blockbuster Beatles podcast Steven Cockcroft joins Jeremy Dylan to talk about George Harrison's solo classic 'Living in the Material World'. In amongst numerous fab-adjacent tangents, Steven and Jeremy talk about the long shadow All Things Must Pass casts over this record, Ringo Starr and Jim Keltner's innovative double drumming techniques, the lead piano of the legendary Nicky Hopkins, how this album might have served as a template for the rest of Harrison's recording career, Harrison's bitterness around the Beatles and the push and pull between his spirituality and material appetites, lawyer-based hoedowns, Harrison's extremely intermittent history as a live act and more. Plus, Steven shares his memories of attending the amazing Concert for George tribute night featuring every single living (at the time) rock legend plus a surprise Monty Python reunion.
What does it mean for something to exist? Today, we’re joined by Doug Axe to talk about idealism and what it means for understanding the world around us. Idealism is the belief that reality exists exclusively of minds and their ideas, rather than a physical, material world. George was quite busy between "All Things Must Pass" and "The Concert for Bangladesh". However, many of the things he played on were not under his own name! We look at two projects where George was a significant contributer: Gary Wright's "Footprint", and Billy Preston's "I Wrote a Simple Song". Excellent playing, and a link between George's Beatles guitar-playing, his work on "All Things Must Pass", and his turn on John Lennon's "Imagine" (when he finally turned back to his own projects with "Living in the Material World!")

The concept of "Spiritual Gravity" describes the inherent pull of the material world that can weigh down our hearts and souls, leading to feelings of heaviness, darkness, and even depression. After recently returning from a spiritually enriching journey through Morocco and Turkey, I experienced a familiar pattern—a temporary sense of dread or depression upon returning to a more materialistic environment. This heaviness that I felt after returning from spiritual travel reflects the gravitational pull of a world deeply rooted in matter and density. Just as gravity pulls objects downward, the material world similarly draws our spiritual selves into states of depression and disconnection. True spirituality, however, offers an invitation to rise and transcend this gravitational pull by reconnecting with the Divine, seeking expansiveness, ascension, and true fulfillment. The path toward spiritual ascension involves immersing oneself in environments and communities grounded in remembrance (dhikr), wisdom, and true knowledge, as preserved by the Prophets and the hearts of the truthful (as-Siddiqeen). Reflecting on this personal experience underscores the critical importance of spiritual reconnection and highlights the necessity of holding tightly to the lifeline extended by Allah Most High through the ages. Learning how to navigate and ultimately transcend the spiritual gravity of the material world leads to peace, purpose, and spiritual health.
Today's episode is on "George Harrison: Living in the Material World", a 2011 film about The Quiet One directed by Martin Scorsese. It's available on Max. Our guest today is George Harrison and Bob Dylan superfan Britt Eisnor. Check out her excellent Dylan content on Instagram. This movie is about George's mysticism, more or less, and weaves in and out of his very famous life story. There are some great talking heads, not all of whom are great people (I'm looking at you, Phil Spector) or come of as well as they think they do (and now I'm looking at you, Eric Clapton), and one conspicuous absence. Also, this movie would have you believe that George Harrison only recorded one solo album. It seems like his career as a musician continued on past 1970, but who can really tell for sure? When we're facing externally, we've turned away, and we don't realize our relationship. But when we do turn towards Kṛṣṇa, we become insiders, that means we're inside Kṛṣṇa. We're inside the family again. In Gajendra's prayers, Gajendra remarks that, "My Lord, You're never inattentive to me. It's not that when I pray, then that's when You pay attention." He said, "You're always paying attention." In fact, we're intimately connected with Kṛṣṇa, and we're never intimately connected with the material world. 'Asango hi dhyayam puruṣaḥ,' means we never really have a connection here. So, when we come to devotional service by choice, Gajendra says, then You're immediately responsive, because You're already just waiting. In 1.2.17 of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, 'svakītaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtanaḥ', the Prabhupāda writes in the purport that Kṛṣṇa wants us to come back to Godhead more than we can desire. He said, "Practically nobody wants to go back to Godhead, but Kṛṣṇa wants everybody to go back to Godhead and be insiders." So that's in this verse, samo 'haṁ sarva-bhūteṣu, na me dveṣyo 'sti na priyaḥ—that half of the verse refers to those who are externally focused, and for them, Kṛṣṇa is dutifully sending the checks. He doesn't even put His name on it. It's like some payment, an alimony payment, or something, whatever it is, but the person doesn't want to disturb the other person's mind, so they don't even put the name on it. They just make a direct deposit so that, "Okay, you don't want to...you don't want to know me anymore, so I'll still pay, but I'll just keep it anonymous." You don't even know where the payments are coming from. People don't even realize God's paying them all the time. He's kindly providing, as Prabhupāda said, for every living being, He is giving all their necessities and more, but everyone just thinks Eh.. there is no God. It's like one fish said to the other, "Do you believe in water?" And he goes, "Nah! I've never seen any water. I don't know what they're talking about." But we're enveloped by God's love all the time. He's providing. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose
It is helpful to come down to what the basics are, and then, as Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura said, "Follow the simple path strictly." I just received a quote the other day from a friend, in which Prabhupāda said, "It's illegal to collect a lot of obscure quotes from a lot of different śāstras, just to show that you know more than other people about a topic." He said, "You only need a few books, but get to know them really well. Go deeply within several of these books—Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Bhagavad-gītā, Nectar of Devotion—for the purpose of being very clear about what's important." And Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura said, "Follow the simple path, but do it very strictly." Just because it's simple doesn't mean that you don't have to put your attention to it. You should be very strict about it. And then we also find that it's a lot deeper than we thought. "Oh, just sixteen rounds—that's all you're going to do?" If you actually chant sixteen rounds attentively, you realize that, "Oh, I'm barely doing anything. There's an ocean here, and I haven't even investigated more than just below the surface. What else is there?" And what to speak of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and Caitanya-caritāmṛta! Prabhupāda said on a morning walk, when there was an argument about reading many different kinds of books available from different authors, Prabhupāda said, "Yeah, fine, but assimilate what you have." And if you try to assimilate Bhagavad-gītā As It Is, it may be a lot deeper than you thought. Who can actually assimilate Bhagavad-gītā fully before moving on to every book available at Ras Bihari Lal, "the biggest little bookstore in the world"? I hope there's never an earthquake, because that place will really collapse. The Personified Vedas say in their prayers to the Lord that this is your greatest pastime, the way you extend yourself to the living beings in this world. And so the attitude and the order. If we pick up an order from the Lord and take it seriously and apply it, especially the order of how to assist him in saving conditioned souls, then Haridas Thakur said, we just want to alleviate your anxiety. And Prabhupada comments there that this is the best kind of service, is to alleviate the anxiety of the Lord. Some souls are lost here in the material energy, and we give them an opportunity to come out. And when we apply these two things, attitude, what's the first thing? Yeah, do anybody here have an attitude. Say, Yes, do your senses have an attitude? Mine do. I describe it as entitlement.I feel entitled to that. It's like no. I really think I should have that. And like no, we can't have it now, or ever. The second is order. If you just take these two principles, two ingredients, and you put them together, then you have a perfect life following the footsteps of Lord Nityananda. And magic happens wherever you go. You turn a boring drudgery of the material world into a festival wherever you go. And it's hilarious fun as Lord Nityananda, he's also funny, and his name Nityananda means he's always having fun. There's never a time when he doesn't have fun. And the only reason I don't have fun, at a certain point I get bored is because of two things, one is attitude and second one is order. And if I just come back to attitude and order, and I adjust them according to Lord Nityananda, then fun, fun, fun - Nitya, ananda! Nityananda is just fun from beginning to end. There's nothing to impede our fun. And the greatest fun of all is to go out as a representative, follow the order and in the attitude of Lord Nityananda, of bringing souls back to Krishna. And how much can you do that? Śamyāprāsa is smiling. How much can you do it Śamyāprāsa? Birds fly as high as they can in the sky. You can do it always. You can do it always and everywhere. That's why Lord Caitanya said 'yāre dekha, tāre kaha ‘kṛṣṇa'-upadeśa, āmāra ājñāya guru hañā tāra' ei deśa' (CC Madhya 7.128). That means world's open for business if you have the right attitude and you have the order, and if you follow the order. I remember first coming to the temple in San Francisco and not being able to look at the Deities. I looked at the flowers instead; that was as much specificity as I could handle. And if you tell somebody God plays a flute, it's like, how do you know and how would a god play a flute? It is almost abhorrent to people to know that there's a God who has specific personal qualities. One other observation I've had about gratitude is that if you have gratitude, it always traces back to a person, because a person means one who's conscious and who can have intention. You can't have gratitude unless somebody was intentionally kind to you. If you find $100 on the ground and you can't trace where it came from, or even if you can, you can't have gratitude for it unless you say something like, "I thank the universe," which people do sometimes, especially in California. Really thank the universe for this? In which case you're trying to personify that the universe has an intention. Why not take it a step further and say, okay, there's a person behind that, there's at least a goddess behind it somewhere. If we have any gratitude, that means there's a person behind it somewhere. Just going back to this sense of 'embrace the personality of God,' that's bhakti and that becomes relishable. It turns the whole bent of the material world—which is deny, deny God's personality—on the tip. And that's what we do. That's what the śāstras do. Every other sound in the material world is an annoyance except for the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahāmantra. And Caitanya Mahāprabhu's clarion call to the world, taking the harinām out into the street was a way of waking everybody up and saying no matter how pious you think you are, you're just in a pit in this mature world. Come out! The saṅkīrtana movement started here at ground zero, Śrīvāsa Aṅgana. There's so much spiritual power in this place because of the event that took place here, which is an eternal event that is still going on because it's a nitya-līlā of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu. If you fall on the ground here in a daṇḍavat, put your heart to the floor; you can feel the pulsation of that first harinām saṅkīrtana or of the nocturnal kīrtana that went on here. And you can pray: please let that vibration go into my heart and stay there and inspire me to take the Holy Name to every town and village, both through nagara-kīrtana and through literary kīrtana, as Prabhupāda said that there is a bṛhat mṛdaṅga. You can chant in the nagara-kīrtana and you can be heard for a few blocks, and nowadays a lot longer because everyone is watching it on YouTube. But when you write down the kīrtana and put it in a book and send it out like a message in a bottle to the world, then it can go everywhere. In fact, he noted that some devotees had given books to the son and daughter of one of the American presidents, and they carried them right into the White House. He said we would not have been able to take the nagara-kīrtana inside the White House, at least not at this point in history, but the books went in. So all this preparation for spreading the Holy Name of the Lord started here at Śrīvāsa Aṅgana.
