Send us a textShort Summary: Do elephants and other animals have language-like abilities, such as the ability to use individual names to refer to themselves and others?About the guest: Michael Pardo, PhD studies animal behavior at Cornell University, where he focused on animal communication and cognition. His work includes extensive field research with African elephants in Kenya.Note: Podcast episodes are fully available to paid subscribers on the M&M Substack and everyone on YouTube. Partial versions are available elsewhere. Full transcript and other information on Substack.Episode Summary: Michael Pardo, PhD talks about his research on animal communication, focusing on whether African savanna elephants use vocal "names" to address each other. They explore the broader context of vocal communication across species like dolphins, parrots, and marmosets, discussing how these systems compare to human language and what they reveal about its evolution. Dr. Pardo shares details of his fieldwork in Kenya, elephant social structures, and their behaviors like mourning the dead, while also touching on the challenges and joys of studying animals in their natural habitats.Key Takeaways:Elephants may use unique vocal rumbles to address specific individuals.Dolphins use signature whistles as "calling cards," sometimes imitating others' whistles to get their attention, hinting at a form of naming.Elephant society features female-led family groups and dispersing males.Elephants show intriguing behaviors like visiting carcasses and covering them with dirt, suggesting an awareness of death uncommon in most animals.Human language evolution may have evolved gradually from simpler communication systems, as seen in various species, rather than emerging suddenly.Studying less charismatic animals like chickens could uncover surprisingly complex communication, broadening our understanding of cognition in nature.Related episode:M&M #20: Language, Symbolic Cognition, Evolution, Origins of the Human Mind Support the showAll episodes, show notes, transcripts, etc. at the M&M Substack Affiliates: Lumen device to optimize your metabolism for weight loss or athletic performance. Today we get into some of the most chilling and controversial tales in Sasquatch and cryptid lore. From the eerie disappearances in Portlock, Alaska, to the infamous Dyatlov Pass incident, we explore the darker side of these legends and the psychological phenomena that fuel our interpretations. The Portlock Alaska Mystery We start in the once-thriving town of Portlock, Alaska, where legends tell of a community driven to abandon their homes due to attacks by a hostile Sasquatch. We examine historical accounts, speak with experts to understand the socio-economic factors at play, and explore whether there's more to the story than mythic creatures. The Dyatlov Pass Tragedy Next, we travel to the snowy slopes of the Ural Mountains in Russia, where nine hikers tragically lost their lives under mysterious circumstances in 1959. Theories about their demise range from avalanches to military experiments, but some insist a Yeti was involved. We dissect the evidence and consider the plausibility of a cryptid encounter. Pareidolia and Sasquatch Research In our final segment, we revisit an experiment I recently conducted with a photo of a stump that many mistook for a Sasquatch. This discussion highlights how pareidolia—seeing faces and forms in mundane objects—can lead even the most earnest researchers astray. We'll talk about the importance of critical thinking and maintaining scientific integrity in cryptid research. Today's journey these chilling tales not only entertains but reminds us of the power of folklore and perception in shaping our understanding of the unknown. As we chase shadows in the wilderness, let's also shine a light on the facts and fictions that guide us. This week we dive into the history and science behind Antarctica and question who made it out: Childs or MacReady? The Thing is a 100% PERFECT film. Grab your flamethrower and join in. About our guests:Peter Neff is a glaciologist and climate scientist working primarily to develop glacier ice core records of past climate, environmental conditions, and atmospheric chemistry. Peter's current research focuses on better understanding recent climate of changing coastal regions in West Antarctica, areas which play a large role in uncertainty for future projections of sea level rise. Peter is also working to capture the last 200-500 years of hydroclimate variability in southwestern British Columbia, Canada, through recovering and developing the southernmost annually-resolved ice core record in North America, from Mount Waddington in the Coast Mountains. Peter is also the Director of Field Research and Data for the Center for Oldest Ice Exploration (COLDEX), a National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center that seeks to find the oldest possible ice core records of past climate preserved in Antarctica. Peter shares widely about ice core climate science via Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram.Matthew Siegfried is a glaciologist who uses satellite remote sensing techniques in combination with field-based and airborne geophysical methods to understand physical processes of Earth's glaciers and ice sheets. He runs the Mines Glaciology Laboratory, where the team collects and synthesizes ground-, air-, and space-based datasets in an effort to span the spatial (centimeters to 100s of km) and temporal (minutes to centuries) on which these processes occur. He is particularly interested in processes at the ice-bed interface, which lies hidden beneath 10s to 1000s of meters of ice at the intersection between glaciology, hydrology, geology, microbiology, and oceanography. He strives to work with a diverse set of researchers to create a unique perspective on the role of subglacial processes within the larger global Earth system. As a polar scientist, Matt is also committed to maintaining an open discussion of the changing cryosphere, having collaborated with institutions ranging from local elementary schools to the U.S. State Department in an effort to facilitate our conversation about the local, regional, and global impacts of changes at the Earth's poles. Matt is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Geophysics at Colorado School of Mines and is affiliated faculty with the Hydrologic Science and Engineering Program and the Humanitarian Engineering Program.Daniella McCahey's primary research attempts to connect Antarctic geographies to greater world history. Her current book project examines the United Kingdom's 1955-1958 Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, arguing that the way this project unfolded demonstrated a scientific community unable to cope with the twin pressures of decolonization and the Cold War. Dr. McCahey has broad interests and has authored/co-authored articles and scholarly book chapters on topics ranging from the media-savvy of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, to paleontology and popular culture in the 1990s, to pornography in Antarctic research stations. She is also conducting ongoing international collaborative research projects on the history of permafrost science and on the history of the British Empire's use of science in its Southern Ocean empire.
Lured Up Podcast 324 Record Date - 10/16/24 Publish Date - 10/18/24 Niantic is making it harder and harder to talk about topics other than the news! October has been a non-stop barrage of events, updates, and content from Niantic, with Trainers barely having a moment to catch their breath. We run through our gameplay from the last week including GIovanni, Mega Mawile, and the current Magnetic Study. It has been a busy week to say the least. Yamask Research Day is this weekend and only adds to the back to back nature of events this month. It makes for the perfect primer for Part 1 of the Halloween Event which lands next week. Morepeko is absolutely making things interesting as is the event and its multiple ways to engage with it. Those chasing Morpeko will need to grind some GBL while those not looking to dig in too deep will stick to the Timed Research. We also can't forget about Spiritomb, who will be in Field Research making for a fun grind. The big news of the week was the announcement of Gigantamax, and the upcoming events to support it. It looks like we will be seeing the Kanto Starters Gigantamax Forms in November, with a very interesting new way to lobby up. With up to 40 Trainers taking on a Gigantamax Pokémon at the same time, it will be interesting to see how many Communities can fill a lobby and get through the coordination needed to plan a large scale Gigantamax Battle. Let's also not forget that we are still seeing plenty of Power Spots at home based businesses, which makes you wonder if Gigantamax locations will be curated or random. An unexpected update hit the news feed of Trainers in the Seattle and Bellevue Washington area, notifying them that the Pokémon Playgrounds AR Experience was available to them at select Gyms and Stops. We look back to 2017 when Niantic first mentioned Playground, which makes it running live in 2024 even more awesome. We dig in to how the Lightship VPS may play an intrical role in Playground, and how it could shape the way we interact with the game at IRL events. Lured Up Podcast 308 Record Date - 6/5/2024 Publish Date - 6/9/2024 We are back in the saddle and ready to ride! We are excited to be back to our weekly schedule and pumping out podcasts! Thanks to everyone for baring with us as Ken finished his move! The motherload of info dropped this past week with Shared Skies being announced as the 15th Season of Pokémon GO. We have plenty to dig through as we have our June content update as well as details on the first few events of the season. We begin with a recap of the first event of the month, Stadium Sights. While we enjoyed this event, we weren't able to capture a Shiny Emolga. Add another chase to our running list. Save the dates have been released for this season's Community Days, and we have Goomy and Cyndaquil on the schedule for June. While May saw a ton of XP events, it looks like June will be all about the Stardust. This month will absolutely keep us busy as we ramp up to GO Fest. Make sure you stay tuned for our GO Fest announcements coming soon! Up next on the calendar is Slumbering Sands, which brings us new costume Pokémon and a new Shiny! Timed Research will be delivered thanks to the GO Plus+ which is reminiscent of the Sleeping Snorlax event from a year ago. We also have a $2 Timed Research, which we both agree is a fair price when you factor in the gameplay experience, items, and rewards. Looking ahead we have Scorching Steps, which while an Egg Event, seems to be making it a bit easier to deal with. There are a spread of chase Pokémon available during this event, including Shiny Larvesta which will show up in 2km, 5km, and 10km eggs, as well as Turtanator, which can be chased via Field Research. All in all, we are pretty hyped for this event, and think it will be a nice lead in to the return of Mega Rayquaza. There were a few tidbits of miscellaneous news to cover including winning a personalized PokéStop at GO Fest: Madrid, the GBL Season update, and Trainer losing their account to a hacker. We knew comparisons would be made to FleeceKing and the Community won't let us forget. Mega Rayquaza is the big topic of the week as we discuss the ups and downs that come with an Elite Raid release. We are split on this one, but the Community is nearly in agreement that they are not in favor of M. Ray coming back as an Elite Raid Boss. Make sure you jump over to our Twitter and join the conversation. We would love to hear what you think about this situation! Lured Up Podcast 306 Stream Date - 5/8/24 Publish Date - 5/12/24 As we approach the final weeks of The Season of Wonder, we discuss the overall flow and cohesion of the Season. Most notably, the Rediscover Campaign has reached its finale with the release of the improved AR experience. All of the new releases that we have seen this season are still sitting in the shadow of GO Fest, which won't even happen until next Season. Rivals week brought us a divers encounter pool and some motivation to knock out some GBL sets. It's always nice to when GBL events roll around because it really brings the best and worst of the community out, and it is always entertaining. Flock Together Research Day brings a nice pool of Flying Type Pokémon and the inevitable Shiny Hunt. This event looks to be a promising update to the now recurring Research Day. Catching Wonders is up next after a small stretch of vanilla spawns. The announcement of Bounsweet and Spanish language support round out our new of the week. We wrap things up with a discussion about the new PokéCoin Paid Research that brings back a poor return along with a terrible condition… that you must have 3 or less Field Research in your stack when the day turns over. Oooh weee we cant wait to see this in action. When I look into the authors who wrote most of the naturalist, ecology, natural history books on my shelves, I mostly see white people, especially the older books. When I do interviews with folks in the field, I still find a majority of those who I am talking with are white folks. I wholly recognize that is on me in a lot of ways, but I also recognize that historically, access to these fields has been gatekept by and for white folks, mostly men. When I come across initiatives that challenge that dynamic, I get stoked. When I find out they are taking students out to some of the places I have and continue to go to to learn about the natural world, I get really stoked, so much so, that I reached out to see about an interview. Alannah Grant and Jonathan Chu are graduate students in Integrative Biology at Guelph. They are also the University of Guelph liaisons for FREED where they lead the organization and fund-raising (amongst other things) for UoG students to participate in FREED excursions. I wanted to ask them about recent movements to bring awareness to and correct the lack of representation of Black, Indigenous, and people of colour in environmental sciences, how they organize themselves, what is working and what they do on these excursions? I am always excited when the things I love are made more accessible, so more folks can appreciate, participate, teach and learn. We all live on this wild planet and we should all be able to take part in the profound experiences of exploring, examining and connecting with the land, on the land. This is what FREED helps folks do. To learn more : FREED websiteFREED instagram
How do researchers navigate field research in conflict-affected societies? In this episode of NIOD Rewind on War and Violence, we explore the challenges and opportunities of conducting field research. Host Anne van Mourik engages with researchers Solange Fontana and Lauren Gould, both with extensive experience in conflict-impacted societies. Why are first-hand experiences important when researching war and violence? What does the increasing shift to remote warfare mean for scholars seeking to conduct fieldwork? When doing fieldwork, how do you manage security? And how to deal with the emotional toll the work might take?

The Center for Whale Research (CWR) is dedicated to the study and conservation of the critically endangered Southern Resident killer whale population and also study the thriving Bigg's killer whale population. Joining us as our guests from CWR are Research Director, Dr. Michael Weiss, and Orca Survey Lead, Dave Ellifrit. We cover a variety of topics in our discussion, filled with lots of great stories. We being talking about the census work conducted by CWR as well as behavioral observations from drones to observe social interactions, networks and prey sharing behavior. The discussion is full of fascinating stories, and we had to ask Dave to tell a few more stories, one about a legendary Bigg's killer whale hunt of a Minke whale, and a happy baby Southern Resident killer whale story. With so many great stories, we will surely have these two back on a future episode. We finish our discussion talking about how the whales are so interdependent on each other and how social effects influence population trajectory. And of course we heard a few more topics interwoven into the conversation, from whales tossing their babies around to different body shapes, fat foreheads, and funny looking whales. The episode concludes with our latest sightings, including the continuing saga of T65A5 and an update on Jack's summer camp, and our meet the matriline with the T18s. Disert is a remote townland in the Bluestack Mountains in Co Donegal. For reasons that are not entirely clear, our ancestors have been drawn here for thousands of years. There is no question it is a special place.Located in the shade of a sacred mountain - Carnaween - it was a site of pagan worship associated with some of the most famous figures in Irish mythology. There are stories relating to Finn MacCumhail (McCool), Diarmaid and Grainne in the surrounding area.It was also used by early Irish Christians and medieval pilgrims. In the 18th century Catholics were drawn to Disert when their religion was suppressed by the penal laws. Even into the 20th century it was used as a cillín to bury unbaptised children. Today the local community continues to pray at the site. The questions remains why? What is special about this site?Over the last few years archaeologists led by Dr Fiona Beglane from Atlantic Technological University, Sligo have been excavating Disert to try and understand its complex story. Her international team of archaeologists from the Institute for Field Research and California State University Los Angeles have made some fascinating discoveries.Last summer I visited Disert to record an episode at the excavation. In this podcast Fiona shares what her team uncovered in this remarkable place...Thanks to Dr Fiona Beglane for her time and archaeologist Rebekka Grace who arranged the recordings.Find out more about Disert at https://disertheritage.com/ Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/irishhistory. In this special final episode, we weave together numerous lessons from throughout the book and podcast, from the value of unstructured time in the field to the surprising parallels between hosting a podcast and doing fieldwork. Using some of our favorite interview clips and book readings, we reflect on the excellent advice our contributors shared and talk about why we love field research. We also turn the mic on our producers! Fotini Christia, Aliyu Zakayo, and Aidan Milliff offer their perspectives as a full professor, a medical doctor and researcher, and an advanced graduate student, respectively, on the ethical and logistical challenges posed by COVID-19 for field research. Each guest draws on their own experiences to offer insights and suggestions for how to adjust your research approach in the face of the pandemic's disruptions.Producer: Harper BarbareeEditors: Zeyad Anwar, Abigail Hamilton, Garrett Madden, Gabriel Wallen, Lila Zarella
We trace the process of learning field research by talking to a group of excellent undergraduate students (Leah Hickert, Jack MacDonald, and Renata Martinez) and advanced graduate students (Vierelina Fernandez, Ayse Lokmanoglu) about how they first encountered and began to conduct field research in their own communities and all over the world. These student-led discussions provide vibrant reminders to us all about how we learn and evolve as researchers and global citizens.Producer: Harper BarbareeEditors: Zeyad Anwar, Abigail Hamilton, Garrett Madden, Gabriel Wallen, Lila Zarella
We welcome Jesse Driscoll from UCSD, Milli Lake from the London School of Economics, and Sarah Parkinson from Johns Hopkins University to talk about teaching field research. How can we teach others how to think about, prepare for, and carry out ethical, valuable field research? All of our guests have taught field research methods to undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, Milli and Sarah run a growing consortium on conducting research in fragile and violence-affected environments, and Jesse just published an educational book on doing global fieldwork. If you want to start teaching about field research (or improve your current approach), this is the episode for you!Producer: Harper BarbareeEditors: Zeyad Anwar, Abigail Hamilton, Garrett Madden, Gabriel Wallen, Lila Zarella
Peter and Ora welcome Erica Chenoweth from Harvard Kennedy School and Zachariah Mampilly from the Marxe School of International Affairs at Baruch College to discuss research ethics, including whether political scientists should have an individual and/or shared code of ethics, tough decisions about accepting funding from government and non-government institutions, and how to ethically engage with policymakers, the general public, and the individuals you are studying during field research.Producers: Harper Barbaree, John GehmanEditors: Hannah Jones, Garrett Madden, Gabriel Wallen, Lila Zarrella
136 [PM55] Coping While CoopedTonight we chat about our recovery discipline. Can let up on our discipline and practices be a symptom of a looming relapse?
