A podcast of pop cultural literacy. Two sisters explore nerdy pop culture from the perspectives of one who knows nothing and one who knows way too much.
Erika will never look at an everything bagel the same way again. Mmmmmmm... bagel that can destroy the multi-verse...
Erika and special guest Jeff share their Top 10 Sci-fi and Fantasy Books of the Pandemic! They claim to have different taste, but all of the books sound basically the same to Stephanie. Speaking of Stephanie, she has read exactly one of the books on the list and she's super proud of herself. Listen in to find out which one it is!
We made it to 10 episodes! The sisters and special guest Tony head to the final frontier where Stephanie learns that the Star Trek universe is full of acronyms, putting a dog in a halloween costume does not an alien make, and that it's Mr. Spock, not Dr. Spock (that's someone else entirely). This episode is dedicated to our intern, Toby, who sadly went to doggie heaven over the summer. To be clear, Toby was a TERRIBLE intern, but he was the best shih tzu a girl (Erika) could ask for.
"The Wheel of Time turns, and ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend." But podcasts are forever.
In our upcoming The Wheel of Time episode, Erika teaches Stephanie about a new (to her) genre: High Fantasy! Listen in as Erika lists other properties (yes, she taught Stephanie that word, too) that are also considered High Fantasy. And, yes, we somehow manage to end up talking about Doctor Who.
Stephanie and Erika list every '90s Internet site they could remember that foreshadowed today's social media. They wonder whether Erika has left any detritus on the Internet, and what Stephanie thinks Friendster has to do with Jell-o shots (spoiler: not much). We also game out what to do with Erika's comic book stash and float some ideas for what we should call the group of kiddos coming up behind Gen Z. If you're middle-aged--or want to feel young!--this one is for you.
The Falcon is now Captain America, the Winter Soldier is no longer the Winter Soldier (nor is he cold), and Uncle Sam was only an uncle in the comic books. What does all that mean? Erika, like Clarissa, explains it all and Stephanie is obsessed with Bridgerton (no, that's not related... or is it?).
Erika and special guest Tina regale Stephanie with the tale of a bounty hunter who refuses to take off his hat and is confused when people double cross him. Also, Baby Yoda! Baby Yoda! Baby Yoda! Since Episode 7 was brought to you by 42, the sisters decided to figure out how six stories, a TV series, several movies, a radio play and a text adventure all add up to a trilogy.
Stephanie watched a few episodes of the mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows for this episode, but it turns out that Erika picked the topic as an elaborate ruse to share her VERY strong feelings about vampires of all kinds--the scary, the sexy, the sparkly, and the just plain boring. Stephanie learns that The Count is a vampire (wait, what...), What We Do In The Shadows somehow connects Spinal Tap, Schitt's Creek, and War of the Worlds, and there was a (very brief) time when Erika was concerned she was reading too many vampire books (thankfully, it passed). Trigger Alert: This episode contains graphic and derogatory descriptions of Staten Island.
It turns out that in 2020, having a dog doesn't get you out of turning in your digital homework. Apparently you're supposed to tuck it in snuggly on a cloud. Also, Intern Toby is doing just fine now that he identifies as a Pirate-American. Arrrrrrr.
Ever wonder what 90% of our recordings sound like? Listen in as the sisters go bloop-bloop through the part of the show that we actually scripted. And, yes, we do this every time.
Justice for Barb! But apparently not Barb, the cactus protagonist of Guy Porfirio's book "Jump." Cactus Barb is all good. Order "Jump" here: https://www.amazon.com/Jump-Guy-Porfirio/dp/1933855819
This X-cellent episode has the sisters delve into the Y of the X-Men with our X-traordinary special guest Brian. We talk the comics, the classic animated series, and of course, the movies. X-citing topics include rational villains, why no one can properly adapt Dark Phoenix to live-action - or even really explain what the heck it is - and what our mutant superpowers would be.
Erika explains the SFS - Suitable for Stephanie - Scale. Stephanie invites the entire internet to ask Erika for their next pop culture recommendation, so go ahead and ask!
Do you ever wonder what the afterlife is like? Do you like froyo or perhaps the Jacksonville Jaguars? Are silly puns your thing? If you answered YES to any of these questions, then we've got an episode for you! The sisters try a new format in which Stephanie shares what she knows about The Good Place after watching the entire run, but Erika still knows much more... so, actually, it's exactly the same. *SPOILER ALERT* This episode contains spoilers about The Good Place. But, seriously, the show is over, so go watch it already.
In this bonus episode, we learn that Stephanie spent time coming up with a list of alternative meanings for the acronym RPG. And Erika and special guest Aaron had to hear them.
The sisters are joined by special guest, Aaron, who explains the magic and mystery of Dungeons and Dragons. Aaron explains why it's fun to be the Dungeon Master, Erika admits that she doesn't actually like Role Playing Games (but does like to LARP, which is apparently a verb), and Stephanie decides to take up improv. Tune in or else we'll have to lock you in a dungeon. With a dragon.
This amazing episode is all about your friendly neighborhood Spider-man! We discuss Spidey's origin story, powers, most famous villains and why he keeps getting rebooted. Your friends will marvel at your new knowledge, no radioactive spider-bite required.
This episode tries to answer the age-old question: Who exactly is Doctor Who? We cover the TARDIS, the Sonic Screwdriver, companions, regenerations and time-travel shenanigans. If you have ever found yourself wondering what any (or all) of these words mean, this is the episode for you! So have a heart (or two) and give it a listen.
In this bonus episode, we dive even deeper into the Star Wars galaxy, covering the various Star Wars animated and live-action television shows, the "A Star Wars Story" movies and even Baby Yoda!
We do a deep dive into the world of the Star Wars movies, discussing important plot details, controversial changes and why Chewbacca didn't get a medal at the end of A New Hope. This podcast contains SPOILERS for the plots of the 9 main Star Wars movies that make up the Skywalker Saga, including the most recent movie (Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker).
A teaser for our new podcast! Are You New Here? is a podcast of pop cultural literacy. Two sisters explore nerdy pop culture from the perspectives of one who knows nothing and one who knows way too much.
