We all grew up playing games — I fondly remember playing Go Fish with my grandma and her next door neighbor, as a 90s kid who grew up with an NES, it felt like every console generation was a leap forward in graphics and game quality, and, regardless of who you're cheering for, tomorrow's World Cup final will be watched by an estimated 2 billion people.But even though at some point many of us stop playing games—even if we don't stop paying attention to them—we hold onto the experiences, the feelings, and the lessons: what they taught us about ourselves, each other, and the world around us. And it's because games play an important role in human development and tell us so much about societies and cultures at large, the relationship between play, games, and learning has always been a focus of our work. It's also been the lifelong interest of my guest today, game designer, artist, author, and researcher, Dr. Mary Flanagan.Mary Flanagan is the founder of Tiltfactor game studio, whose tabletop and digital games intentionally tackle a number of social issues. Erika Gangsei has run the interpretive media team at SFMOMA for nearly two decades, and for 15 of those years she's been quietly building one of the most coherent game-based programming initiatives inside any major cultural institution in the country.In this conversation, we get into the origins of Play SFMOMA, which launched in 2011, before games as an art form had any real institutional legitimacy, and what it actually took to sustain a program built on deliberate experimentation rather than proven outcomes. Erika talks about the decision to treat game designers the way SFMOMA treats sound artists and filmmakers: as essential creative collaborators, not afterthoughts. She makes a sharp distinction between gamification (which museums were chasing then, and still are) and authentic game-based programming — and explains why that difference matters for visitors.We also talk about the institutional immune system. Erika uses the phrase literally: museums have white blood cells that attack unfamiliar things, and Play SFMOMA has spent 15 years slowly inoculating SFMOMA to interactivity. Unless you've been living under a rock, you're likely to have noticed the discourse has been set abuzz with talk of a crisis of masculinity. While the debate is out on whether the real culprit is feminism, toxic masculinity, the Nanny State, or automation, men are indeed struggling to find themselves. The rates of loneliness, drug abuse, and suicide among men have reached record highs.In response, a proliferation of “manosphere” influencers has cropped up, selling a variety of remedies: Nietzschean vitalism, a return to the Bronze Age with a stoic regimen of powerlifting and renouncing seed oils, going to Latin Mass and finding yourself a tradwife. Gender norms, they tell us, have been muddied by the waters of relativism and so-called theories of performativity. Yet their vision of recovering real gender norms feels painfully superficial, even LARP-y.What is masculinity, at its core? And how can we—men and women—begin to recover what it means to embrace our embodiment, in all of its glory and fragility? Few would think to look to the example of Pier Paolo Pasolini—a queer, Marxist, lapsed-Catholic writer and filmmaker—for answers. "One of the highlights of the Finnish larp is heavy, hard emotions. Crying is very much associated with Nordic style and Finnish style larping." Have you ever wanted to trauma bond with a hundred strangers aboard a spaceship while fleeing an alien threat? Do you want to be emotionally devastated while making hard choices about love, sacrifice, and humanity? Then Finnish larp is for you! Laura Kröger is the lead producer and narrative director of Odysseus, a large-scale sci-fi larp run in Helsinki, Finland in 2019 and 2024, in both Finnish and English. Built for 104 players, it's set in an original science fiction universe inspired by classics such as Battlestar Galactica. Each participant has a pre-written role with past relationships, loyalties, secrets and fears, but the choices and emotional journeys are in the hands of the players. Beyond the script, the set of Odysseus is mind-blowingly realistic, considering it was built into an elementary school as a temporary installation during summer break. Laura talks to us about all the logistics of running such a massively complex larp, including how food and lodging is handled, costuming, and emotional support. I especially enjoyed hearing about how battles and "injuries" are handled. There is even a medical bay with some very graphic special effects "injuries" where "surgeons" are operating.
