Overpowering Emotions Podcast: Helping Children and Teens Manage Big Feels
What do you do when a child's anger shows up fast—and keeps showing up? In this episode of Overpowering Emotions, Dr. Caroline sits down with Luminara (Esther Clyne), an intuitive energy healer with 20+ years of experience supporting kids, teens, and adults through overwhelm, trauma, and nervous system dysregulation.Luminara shares why teens who struggled early often hit a wall later, and how “secure support” changes everything. You'll hear practical, school-friendly tools she teaches students (and encourages them to teach their parents), including HeartMath-inspired heart-focused attention, guided imagery for anger that builds self-compassion, and a simple grounding practice she calls “look, listen, feel” to bring attention back into the body.Educators, parents, and mental health professionals will walk away with language you can use in the classroom, at home, or in session—especially when breathing exercises don't land well for a child. This conversation is warm, real, and full of techniques you can try today.About Luminara (Esther Clyne) Luminara, also known as Esther Clyne, is an intuitive energy healer, author, and musician with over 20 years of experience supporting children, teens, and adults through trauma, overwhelm, and nervous system dysregulation. Her work blends energy awareness, body-based practices, guided visualization, and heart-focused regulation, with a strong emphasis on compassion, safety, and emotional presence.Luminara works closely with teenagers in school settings and one-on-one, drawing from both lived experience and decades of practice. She is known for translating complex emotional and nervous system concepts into language kids understand, and for teaching tools that empower young people to regulate themselves—and confidently share those tools with the adults in their lives.Homework activities for adults A) The “hand on heart” reset (60–90 seconds)Put a hand on your chest.Focus on the sensation of heart/chest warmth on the hand… then hand warmth on the chest. If you have space, slow breathing slightly and imagine breath moving through the chest. Resource: none. Best use: when your child escalates; do it before you talk.B) Anger-as-a-puppy visualization (3–5 minutes)Picture sitting in a rocking chair outdoors.Imagine holding a puppy/kitten/baby that represents anger.Offer the same soothing you'd give that creature. When it calms, bring it “back into the heart centre.” Resource: quiet corner + 3 minutes. Best use: bedtime, after school, before tough transitions.C) “Look, listen, feel” for presence (2 minutes)Look slightly up (about 20%) and fix eyes gently on one spot.Listen to sounds around you.Feel one body sensation (heart, hands, feet). Try to hold all three. When thoughts rush in, restart. Resource: none. Best use: sleep support, anxiety spirals, classroom reset.D) Proactive practice schedule (simple)Heart-focused attention: morning + night (as suggested in the episode). “Look, listen, feel”: once midday (lunch break, prep period, school pick-up). Resource: phone reminder (optional).Enjoying the show? . . camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the LORD to the test?” But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. Then Moses cried out to the LORD “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.” The LORD answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” Exodus 17:1-7 (selected verses) Worth More Than Water In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Have you ever been REALLY thirsty? Like after recess? Or soccer practice? Or playing outside on a super hot day? Without food, a person can live for quite a while. But without water? Only about three days! That means water isn't just nice to have. It's something our bodies absolutely need. Most of us can just turn on a faucet and—splash!—there's water. We use water to drink, brush our teeth, shower, wash dishes, water plants, and even have water balloon fights! We have LOTS of water. But not everywhere is like that. Some places are called deserts. A desert is a place that gets very, very little rain. One of the driest deserts in the whole world is called the Atacama Desert in Chile. It is said to be 100 times drier than Phoenix, AZ. Some parts of the desert have gone years without rain! Imagine waiting years for rain! Plants that grow there have to survive with almost no water. But people? People can't survive like that. Now imagine the Israelites. They had just left Egypt, and they were traveling through the desert. It was hot. It was dry. And they were thirsty. Very thirsty. They started to complain. But they forgot something important: They were not alone. God was with them. And God promises to take care of his people. So God told Moses to do something amazing. He said, “Strike the rock, and water will come out of it.” Water. From a rock! And it worked. God gave his thirsty people exactly what they needed. But God didn't just give them water. And he doesn't just give us water either. God gives us food, water, homes, and families. But he gives us something even more important. He gives us salvation. Just like a desert can't make its own water, we can't make our own salvation. We can't be good enough to earn heaven. We can't fix our sins by ourselves. And when we complain like the Israelites did—or forget to trust God—that shows us how much we need a Savior. And God gave us one. He didn't just bring water from a rock. He sent Jesus. That is worth more than water. That is worth everything. Let's never forget it. Prayer: Dear Lord, you alone provide everything that I need for my body and life. Most of all, you provide what I need for eternal life: Jesus. Thank you! Now help me to trust you and not complain. Amen. The questions below are to help families discuss this devotion. The questions are divided by age group as suggestions, but anyone could reflect on any of the questions as they desire. Questions for Younger Children Where were the Israelites traveling that made it hard to find water? We need water to live physically. We need God's Word to live spiritually. How is the Bible like water for our faith? Questions for Elementary Age Children The Israelites complained to Moses—but who were they really complaining against? What does that teach us about complaining? In your own words, what did Jesus do to save you? Why couldn't we save ourselves? Questions for Middle School and Above Where do you complain the most (Homework, chores, siblings, bedtime)? God gave the Israelites water in the desert. Water can remind us of Baptism. How does your Baptism show that God has already given you forgiveness and made you his child? Download Family Devotions Family Devotions are brought to you by WELS Discipleship. In this podcast episode, Tavershima Ayede breaks down how to master the "dreaded" cold call. By critiquing a real-life (and failed) sales pitch, Tavershima reveals why most outreach falls flat and how you can actually get people to stay on the line. Why Most Cold Calls FailThe host points out two major "deal-breakers" that kill a conversation before it starts:Zero Research: Calling someone without knowing who they are or what they need.No Exit Strategy: Dragging the call on without a clear goal or a way to wrap it up professionally. The "Must-Haves" of a PitchTo keep a prospect from hanging up, you need to answer three questions immediately:Who are you? (Identity)How did you get my number? (Transparency)Why should I care? And what's this call about? (The Value Prop)Two Winning StrategiesIf you want to move past the "rejection" phase, Tavershima suggests these frameworks:The Challenger Approach: You lead with high-value insights or data that the prospect didn't know they needed. The Benefit-Led Approach: You focus entirely on a specific win for the customer to spark instant curiosity. The Bottom LineCold calling is tough, but Tavershima argues it is a vital skill. Beyond just closing deals, it builds the resilience and communication skills necessary for long-term business growth.

Episode Description "Unprocessed grief does not disappear. It shows up in the way you attach, the way you fear, and the way you love." In this episode of Grieve That Shit, Sharon Brubaker, grief specialist and founder of The Grief School, sits down with Sean Walker, a faith-based relationship coach who helps men and women understand attachment patterns, regulate their nervous systems, and stop repeating the same painful relationship cycles. After losing her nephew Austin, Sharon learned that grief is not just sadness. It is what happens when love has nowhere to land. And that same injury can show up after death, divorce, breakup, abandonment, or the loss of a connection that was never safely formed. Together, Sharon and Sean unpack the powerful overlap between grief and attachment. They explore how early relationships shape the way we love, why people cling or shut down, how labels can help but also keep people stuck, and what it really means to heal at the soul level instead of just trying to fix the relationship. This conversation is not about dating tricks. It is about internal rewiring. Because sometimes the real heartbreak is not just who left. It is the pattern that keeps getting repeated. What You'll Learn in This Episode How grief and attachment are deeply connected Why breakup pain is often more than "just a breakup" What anxious and avoidant attachment can look like in real life Why people over-identify with labels instead of doing the healing work How unprocessed grief can keep showing up in dating and relationships Why you can still love someone and know the relationship is not right for you What it means to build security that lasts beyond marriage or romantic love Questions to Sit With After Listening You do not need to answer these quickly. Am I grieving a person, a relationship, or a version of safety I never had? What patterns do I keep repeating in love? Have I been using labels to understand myself — or to avoid feeling? Do I want love from a place of wholeness, or do I need it to prove I'm okay? Homework for You Write this at the top of a page: "What am I really grieving in love?" Then answer honestly. Not the polished answer. Not the spiritual answer. Not the one that makes you sound healed. The real one. Because you cannot heal what you keep misnaming. This episode covers the last part of chapter 30 from: “One day I entered a cinema house to view a newsreel...” to the end of the chapter Summary: In this section of the chapter Paramahamsa Yogananda explores Guruji's prayer and the biblical references to Elijah and Elisha, discussing how these stories relate to the concept of miracles. We share our personal experiences of miracles, both grand and mundane, and examined Guruji's explanation that everything is a miracle. Guruji's warns us about Maya, Satan or illusion, and its role as the cosmic magician's plan to divert us from spirit to matter. We reflect the chapter and how Guruji skilfully weaves together scientific concepts, biblical passages, and personal stories to explain the nature of miracles and their place in the universe. 0:00 Prior Episode; 2:30 The Prayer; 12:40 What is a Miracle?; 34:05 Masters and Miracles; 30:55 Maya; 40:25 Reflections on the chapter. On this episode of The Brainy Moms podcast, Dr. Amy and Sandy unpack reasons why schoolwork so often triggers meltdowns and then give you a practical roadmap to fix them—by finding whether you're facing a content gap, a cognitive skills gap, or a diagnosis that needs attention. As experts AND moms who've lived the dining-room-table drama, we share how to cool the moment, then build long-term capacity so your child needs fewer props and shows more independence. We talk about content gaps, or how missed lessons, curriculum switches, and assumed knowledge silently sabotage progress. You'll learn simple, respectful ways to investigate and reteach without shame—pretests, quick reviews, and targeted practice that restore confidence fast. Then we go deeper into the cognitive engine behind learning: attention, processing speed, working memory, long-term memory, auditory processing, and visual-spatial skills. When these lag, behavior often looks oppositional, but it's usually “I can't.” We show how to blend short-term supports like planners and checklists with skill-building approaches that actually strengthen the brain, not just the routine. We also tackle the diagnoses that complicate schoolwork. ADHD often includes weaker working memory and processing speed; anxiety hijacks focus and stamina; reading disorders, auditory processing issues, and vision problems can all derail comprehension. Add real-life factors—sleep debt, food sensitivities, sensory overload—and you've got a perfect storm. We'll help you become a calm, curious detective: map patterns, test one change at a time, and track function over percentiles to guide next steps. Expect practical examples, gentle scripts, and growth-minded ways to stretch without snapping, plus ideas for using games to build skills and connection at home. Overpowering Emotions Podcast: Helping Children and Teens Manage Big Feels
Radical acceptance is a strong start… then kids still look at you like, “Okay, now what?” In this episode of Overpowering Emotions, Dr. Caroline Buzanko teaches the missing step: agency—helping kids and teens take the next right thing even when they feel anxious, angry, embarrassed, or stuck. You'll hear simple scripts, plus kid-friendly metaphors (GPS detours, storms and umbrellas, rivers, and the “two arrows”) that turn spirals into small, doable moves. Dr. Caroline also shares a real story from parenting a 10-year-old through a tough coaching situation—without swooping in—and shows how to validate emotions while still building resilience. If you support youth with anxiety, school refusal, perfectionism, overwhelm, or big feelings, this episode gives you practical language and quick activities you can use today: grounding in the body, values-based choices, “even though” self-coaching, and daily reflection that trains courage over avoidance.Homework activities for adults supporting kids/teens A) The 3-step reset (use in real time)Prompt 1: “Name the reality.” (“This is hard.” “This hurts.”)Prompt 2: “Find it in your body.” (“Where do you feel it—chest, hands, stomach?” “Left or right?”)Prompt 3: “Pick one small step.” (“What's one thing you can do right now?”)Resource to prep: a tiny cue card for adults (phone note or printed) with the three prompts.B) The “Even though… I still can…” script practice (2 minutes/day)Have the child complete 1 sentence daily:“Even though I feel ___, I still can ___.”“Even though I want to ___ (avoid), I still can ___ (stay/try).”Adults model it too (kids copy what they see).Resource to prep: a note in the kitchen/classroom wall, or a journal page with 10 blank lines.C) Values Compass (15 minutes, then weekly check-ins)Draw a circle, divide into “pie slices” of important areas (friendship, learning, family, health, fun, etc.).Rate satisfaction 1–10 for each slice.Ask: “What makes it a 2 and not a 1?” then: “What bumps it up by 0.5?”Resource to prep: blank “values pie” worksheet (paper + markers) or a whiteboard template.D) Choose-your-response scenarios (flexibility training)Pick one common stressor (pop quiz, reading aloud, being left out, forgotten homework).Brainstorm 3 response types:avoidance (run away)neutral/mixed (ask to read with partner)approach/values-aligned (read one sentence even while nervous)Resource to prep: a list of 10 scenarios relevant to your child/student group.E) Daily “bravery receipt” reflection (2–5 minutes)Question: “What was something hard today?”Question: “What did you do anyway?”Close: “Today, I acted like someone who values ___.”Resource to prep: a journal, sticky notes, or a simple nightly routine prompt.Enjoying the show? In this episode of Business Coaching Secrets, host Karl Bryan flies solo while Rode Dog is away, answering listener questions on where to find the best coaching clients, impressing business owners at networking events, and mastering the art of consistency to drive business coaching success. Karl packs the episode with actionable insights, practical frameworks (like the 10/10 frame), and real-world examples any coach can use to grow their practice and deliver more value to clients. Key Topics Covered The Power of Frame Control in Coaching Relationships Karl explains the importance of spending 10% of your meeting time in an "upper frame," 10% in a "lower frame," and the majority—80%—in an "equal frame" when interacting with potential clients. This dynamic helps build respect and trust, especially when dealing with more successful business owners. Best Sources for New Coaching Clients He breaks down multiple lead generation avenues, emphasizing that your "best client is you five years ago"—target businesses where you can deeply relate to their challenges. Karl lists practical places to find prospects, including businesses advertising locally, new business registries, joint venture partners, and business networking groups. How to Impress at Networking Events Karl shares tactics for being memorable: always have three "bombs" (unique, value-driven statements) to drop in conversation, use storytelling with conflict and a clear outcome, and focus on effort and process over just touting your success. Consistency as the Ultimate Key to Success He doubles down on the idea that consistency and discipline—not luck—attract ideal clients. Demonstrating reliability in your marketing, networking, and delivery helps draw high-caliber, growth-minded clients who value the same traits. Diagnosing and Fixing High Revenue, Low Profit Businesses Finally, Karl walks through a blueprint for helping businesses with strong top-line sales but weak profit margins. He advocates for a methodical review of all expenses, process improvements, pricing strategies, and creating recurring revenue models. Notable Quotes "Your best client is always going to be you five years ago." "To be valuable, you have to be memorable." "Success does not belong to the lucky; it belongs to the focused." "Consistency and discipline—if you want those clients, you have to demonstrate those traits first." "If you want to influence business owners, make them envious of who you are, not what you have." Actionable Takeaways Identify Your Ideal Client: Start with the person you were five years ago—target those business owners, as you'll understand their pain points and can speak their language. Expand Your Lead Generation: Look beyond social media—search for businesses advertising locally, check new business registries, join networking organizations like BNI or the Chamber of Commerce, and build joint venture partnerships. Impress Through Value and Storytelling: Come prepared to every networking event with three impactful concepts or stories that make people say, "Wow, I've never heard it explained like that before." Practice Relentless Consistency: Show up with discipline—whether it's weekly live events, ongoing content, or daily outreach. Your consistency will become your magnet for disciplined, high-value clients. When Solving Low Profit Margins: Go through each expense line to determine if it helps win or keep a client—if not, cut it. Review pricing, renegotiate with vendors, and design a recurring revenue model. Homework for Coaches: Pick a niche and list 50 ways you can help that type of business. This will boost your focus, readiness, and enthusiasm when prospecting. Episode Description "Grief deserves care. It does not deserve to be shoved in a corner." In this episode of Grieve That Shit, Sharon Brubaker, grief specialist and founder of The Grief School, pulls back the curtain and finally answers the question: What actually is The Grief School? After losing her nephew Austin, Sharon learned the hard way that grief is not something you "get over." It cracks your heart open. It shifts your identity. It leaves you standing in the aftermath asking, What the hell am I supposed to do now? The Grief School was built for that moment. This episode walks you through every layer of the community — from the free Facebook spaces to the Story Room, Courage Club, Processing the Pain of Grief, Forever Changed, Honor Society, and beyond. Sharon explains how each space is designed to help women stop performing, start telling the truth, and finally process what actually happened to their hearts. This is not about moving on. It is about healing a broken heart in community. Because grief is heavy enough. Carrying it alone makes it heavier. What You'll Learn in This Episode What The Grief School actually is — and who it's for The difference between the free community spaces and the private university How the Story Room creates a safe place to speak the truth What happens inside Processing the Pain of Grief What Forever Changed really means — and why integration matters Why grief healing requires structure, community, and courage Questions to Sit With After Listening You do not need to rush these. What has happened in my life that cracked my heart open? Have I been trying to carry this alone? Where do I need to be witnessed instead of fixed? Am I ready to learn the truth about my grief? Homework for You Ask yourself: "Where is the safest place for me to begin?" Maybe it's listening. Maybe it's joining the free Facebook group. Maybe it's coming to the Story Room. Just take one step. Healing doesn't start with perfection. It starts with showing up. This week, hosts of N2K CyberWire Maria Varmazis and Dave Bittner alongside Joe Carrigan are discussing the latest in social engineering scams, phishing schemes, and criminal exploits that are making headlines. Maria's story covers a BBC experiment by Thomas Germain showing how easily major AI tools like ChatGPT and Google's Gemini repeated a completely fabricated claim he posted online, highlighting what experts call a “renaissance for spam” as SEO-style manipulation resurfaces in the age of AI. Dave's story examines Elizabeth Chamblee Burch's book The Pain Brokers, which details how women with pelvic mesh implants were allegedly cold-called and steered into surgeries as part of a $40 million mass-tort recruitment scheme fueled by litigation finance and regulatory gaps. Joe's story reports on an alleged decade-long ticket fraud ring at the Louvre in Paris, where tour guides and museum employees are accused of reusing tickets and bribery, costing more than €10 million before French authorities made multiple arrests. If you've ever looked at your brew gear and thought, ‘I don't have the energy for this today,' this episode is for you. Homebrewing is supposed to be fun. It's supposed to be relaxing. But somewhere along the way, for a lot of us, it starts to feel like homework. In this edition of the Brew Map Project James and Shannon are talking about why that happens, how common it actually is, and why the answer might not be brewing harder, but changing the assignment.
Download the Episode 4 workbook → https://bit.ly/p-finance-in-february-workbook This episode is part of our 4-part Finance February series. Watch the full series here → https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKi-7Pfz-69k5RqQyH-xU6EUe9Vk1_6LS&si=rzltOTe_pRerUshH This is the episode where the money finally means something. You've built awareness (Episode 1). You've created rhythm (Episode 2). You've learned how to make decisions and get paid properly (Episode 3). Now comes the real question: What do you actually do with the money? Because profit without intention just turns into: – Dumb spending – Panic tax decisions – Or a bigger business that still owns you. This episode is about turning profit into freedom, wealth, and optionality — not more stress. In this episode, you'll learn: 1) The order of operations for money (most owners get this backwards) Profit isn't for random spending. There's a sequence: – Pay yourself properly – Allocate for tax on purpose – Decide how much stays in the business – Decide how much gets extracted – Then invest deliberately Miss the order and you'll always feel broke, even when the numbers look good. 2) Why “reinvest everything” keeps owners stuck Reinvestment without rules is just unpaid labour in disguise. You'll learn how to reinvest with intention, so the business grows and your life improves. 3) The difference between business wealth and personal wealth A valuable business is not the same as personal security. We break down how to: – Build cash buffers – Separate business risk from life money – Avoid having your entire net worth trapped inside your gym 4) Smarter tax decisions (not dodgy write-offs) Buying stuff to “save tax” is one of the most expensive mistakes owners make. You'll learn how to: – Plan tax early – Use profit allocation instead of panic spending – Make decisions your future self won't regret 5) Designing a business that serves your life This is where finance becomes personal. What's the point of profit if: – You're still stressed – You still can't switch off – You still feel guilty spending money? This episode ties the numbers back to why you started. Homework: Your homework for Episode 4 is to decide what your profit is for. Download the workbook here → https://bit.ly/p-finance-in-february-workbook Then choose ONE: Set a profit allocation rule Decide how much stays in the business vs comes out Create a tax buffer (on purpose, not in panic) Decide what “enough” actually looks like for your life Map how profit turns into freedom over the next 12–36 months Write it down. Put it in the calendar. Stop winging it. What's next? That wraps Finance February. If this series changed how you think about money, decisions, or your role as an owner, go back and rewatch it as a system, not four random episodes. Overpowering Emotions Podcast: Helping Children and Teens Manage Big Feels
Big feelings don't go away just because we want them to. In this episode of Overpowering Emotions, Dr. Caroline Buzanko teaches radical acceptance as a practical skill for kids, teens, and the adults supporting them—educators, parents, counselors, and clinicians. You'll learn how to help young people spot when the “Hulk brain” is running the show, get the self-regulating brain back online, and choose a response that keeps them moving—without pretending the situation is okay. Dr. Caroline uses simple metaphors (rainstorms, quicksand, traffic jams, finger traps) plus classroom-ready scripts like “This is hard, and I can handle it.” You'll also get hands-on tools: a control-circle exercise, a radical acceptance jar, coping cards, and “yet” language that builds confidence over time.If you support kids who get stuck in “it's not fair” loops, this episode gives you language, visuals, and practice ideas you can use the same day.Homework for AdultsA) The Control Map (10 minutes, weekly)Draw two circles: Inside = In my control, Outside = Not in my controlPut the current stressor in the middle, then list what belongs where. Resource: paper + marker; optional printable you can make with two circles.B) “BUT → AND” Script Practice (2 minutes a day)Take common complaints and rewrite them out loud using AND. Try: “This is hard, and I can handle it.” “I'm feeling upset, and it's okay—this is normal.” “I can be uncomfortable and still be brave.”Resource: sticky notes on a wall/mirror; coping cards in backpack.C) “Yet” Statements + Progress Tracker (5 minutes, 2–3x/week)Swap “I can't” with “I can't… yet.”Track wins so anxiety doesn't erase them.Resource: a simple chart with columns: What I'm working on / What I tried / What helped / What changed.D) Radical Acceptance Jar (weekly celebration)Kids write one moment they didn't like, accepted, and kept going.Pick a few each week and celebrate effort, not results.Resource: jar + slips of paper; optional stickers for effort.E) “Rain vs. Umbrella” Daily Check-In (30 seconds)Ask at dinner or after school: “What was your rain today? What was your umbrella?” F) Role-Play Micro-Frustrations (3 minutes)Practice with tiny stuff: marker color, waiting a turn, a plan change. Use the same closing line: “I don't like it, but I can handle it.” Resource: a short list of role-play prompts on your phone.Enjoying the show? home profit Make Your Home Work Harder (Profit + Remodel Strategy) | Episode 589 Hey, it's James from SurvivalPunk.com. It's 39 degrees, and today we're talking about making your home work harder. This one's twofold. Part one: remodeling strategically in a broken housing market.Part two: turning your house from a pure expense into something that actually produces. The housing market sucks right now. That's just reality. But that doesn't mean you're powerless. The Housing Market Is Skewed — Use That Starter homes are struggling. Lower-tier houses are sitting. But higher-end houses? Selling like crazy. Million-dollar homes are moving because people with that kind of money don't care about rates the same way. That skews the data. People see $400k homes selling and assume everything is hot — but that doesn't help someone trying to get into their first house. If you're buying right now, one strategy is simple: buy under your ceiling. Know your range. Don't stretch yourself to death. Look at homes that need a little TLC. Cosmetic stuff. Cabinets. Paint. Fixtures. Appliances. Flooring. Those are solvable. Over time, you remodel intelligently and build equity yourself. If you're already in a house, the same concept applies. Pick one room at a time. Kitchen. Bathroom. Flooring. Do it in phases. At the end? You either: Have a fully remodeled home you love Or you sell at a higher value and move up But your strategy matters. If your goal is resale, you remodel based on trends — not your personal taste. Sage green cabinets? Trendy. I hate them. Doesn't matter. If the goal is ROI, you follow market taste. Black kitchens? Also trendy. Not my thing. If it's your forever home? Then build for you. Two totally different goals. Yard = Wasted Opportunity Most people see yard work as a chore. Leaves? Trash.Rainwater runoff? Waste.Space? Decorative. Wrong mindset. Leaves are free compost input. Not just your leaves — your neighbors' leaves too. Compost them down and: Stop buying compost Sell compost Sell compost tea Turn a waste stream into revenue You're literally converting trash into product. That's how you make a home work harder. Gardening Isn't Just Food — It's Leverage Growing your own vegetables reduces grocery bills. But microgreens? That's a business. The profit margins on microgreens are insane if you run it correctly. Small greenhouse. Controlled setup. Scalable. You need to run the numbers. But the ceiling is there. Even if you don't sell: Growing salads = not buying salads Growing vegetables = not buying vegetables Saving seeds = compounding future production If you're watering plants with rainwater you collected off your own roof, from seeds you saved from food you grew? You're basically printing your own money at that point. Water Runoff Is Money Going Down the Drain Rain barrels and cisterns are underrated. Every time it rains, your roof is producing water. Most people just let it run off. Collect it. Use it for: Gardening Lawn irrigation Emergency supply Water bills are going up. Ours doubled recently. It's still affordable, but it won't always be. Reducing dependency now is smart. Indoor Production: Mushrooms and Niche Products Growing mushrooms indoors is exploding. Lion's Mane. Reishi. Specialty varieties. The science on mushroom benefits is still unfolding, but the demand is real — and they're expensive to buy retail. If you're already spending money on them, growing them yourself cuts cost massively. Get good at it? Sell excess. There are tons of small indoor side hustles you can start from your home. Some are simple. Some are more technical. The common thread: Reduce retail markup. If you can make something yourself that normally carries huge markup — that's leverage. There's nothing wrong with profit. But there is a line between fair markup and straight-up exploitation. If you can eliminate the middle layer, your cost drops dramatically. That's power. Remodel vs Production — Pick Your Angle Your home can: Build equity through smart remodeling Reduce expenses through production Generate income through niche products Or do all three Most people treat their house as: Mortgage.Utilities.Expense. That's it. But if you treat it like a tool — like an asset that works — it changes the math. Final Thoughts The housing market might be rough. Interest rates might suck. Starter homes might be overpriced. But you still control: What you buy How you improve it What you produce from it What you stop paying retail for Make your home work harder. RCL Texts:Genesis 2:15–17; 3:1–7; Psalm 32; Romans 5:12–19; Matthew 4:1–11(Narrative Lectionary text and comments follow below)Theme: From Hiding to TrustCore ClaimLent begins with hard truth about sin, but moves quickly to mercy: in Christ, we are called out of hiding and formed into a life of trust.1) Scripture SummariesGenesis 2:15–17; 3:1–7Humanity is placed in the garden with freedom and responsibility, but the serpent reframes God's command and plants distrust. The man and woman choose autonomy over trust, and their eyes are opened—not to wisdom as promised (or as they perhaps imagined it), but to shame and vulnerability. Sin appears as broken trust, disordered desire, and rupture of innocence.Psalm 32A testimony of grace: confessed sin becomes forgiven sin. Silence before God becomes burden; honest confession opens mercy, guidance, and joy. Those who trust the Lord are surrounded by steadfast love.Romans 5:12–19Paul contrasts Adam and Christ. Through Adam, sin and death spread; through Christ, grace and life overflow. Christ's obedience is stronger than Adam's disobedience. Where sin condemned, Christ justifies and restores.Matthew 4:1–11Jesus, led by the Spirit, is tempted by appetite, power, and false security. Each temptation invites self-serving control instead of trustful sonship. Jesus answers with Scripture and remains faithful, revealing true obedience where humanity often falls.2) Unifying Thread“From Distrust to Trust: the Lenten journey from hiding to grace.”• Genesis: the root problem—distrust of God's goodness.• Psalm 32: the turning point—stop hiding, confess, receive mercy.• Romans 5: the gospel claim—Christ's faithfulness is greater than Adam's failure.• Matthew 4: faithfulness embodied—Jesus trusts where we are tempted to seize control.A Preaching Arc1. The lie – “God is withholding from you.” (Genesis)2. The burden – unconfessed sin crushes the soul. (Psalm 32)3. The gift – grace surpasses sin. (Romans 5)4. The way – trustful obedience in real temptation. (Matthew 4)One-Sentence TakeawayLent begins by naming our distrust, but does not leave us there: in Christ, we are invited out of hiding, into confession, and into a new life of trust.3) Homily Outline (7–10 minutes)“From Hiding to Trust”1) Opening (1 minute)• Lent is honesty, not spiritual theater.• Sin begins in Genesis not with rule-breaking, but distrust.• Theme: distrust → confession → grace → trustful obedience.2) Genesis: Anatomy of Temptation (2 minutes)• “Did God really say…?” begins with suspicion.• Focus shifts from gift to restriction.• Result: shame and hiding, not freedom.• Modern echoes: “I must control this, or I'm not safe.”• The beginning of sin is trusting the wrong voice.3) Psalm 32: Grace of Confession (1.5–2 minutes)• “When I kept silent, my bones wasted away…”• Confession is not humiliation for its own sake; it is healing.• God's response is forgiveness and guidance.• Pastoral invitation: Where are we exhausted from pretending?4) Romans 5: Adam and Christ (2 minutes)• Adam's distrust spreads sin and death.• Christ's obedience brings justification and life.• Grace is greater than sin's reach.• Good news line: Your failure is real—but not final.5) Matthew 4: Jesus in the Wilderness (2 minutes)Three temptations, one test: trust vs control.• Stones to bread: satisfy need without trust.• Temple leap: demand proof instead of faith.• Kingdoms by compromise: gain power without the cross.Jesus answers with words from God and trustful obedience.6) Application for the Week (1 minute)1. Name the lie you're most tempted to believe.2. Practice specific, daily confession.3. Choose one act of trustful obedience where you usually choose control.7) Closing (30–45 seconds)Lent is not proving ourselves to God; it is being led by Christ from hiding into trust.Closing line: “From Eden's hiding place to the wilderness of testing, God is drawing us toward one truth: we are saved not by grasping, but by grace—and grace teaches us to trust.”An IllustrationA parent in one congregation spoke about a weeknight that felt painfully ordinary.Nothing dramatic happened—just the accumulated pressure of a long day. Work ran late. Dinner was rushed. Homework wasn't done. A younger child was melting down. An older child was answering in that teenage tone that instantly raises your blood pressure. The parent said, “I came into the evening already empty, but I kept telling myself I could power through.” And then one small moment set everything off. A spilled drink, a sarcastic reply, a slammed cabinet door—something tiny. The parent snapped. Words came out sharper than intended. A child yelled back. Another child went quiet. And within ten minutes, the whole house was in that heavy silence families know too well.Later that night, the parent stood at the sink and thought, “How did we get here again?”Not because they didn't love their family. Not because they were a bad person. But because fear and exhaustion had quietly become the loudest voice in the room. The next line the parent said really struck home:“The hardest part wasn't losing my temper. The hardest part was walking down the hallway and knocking on my child's door.”Because confession in family life is vulnerable. It is easier to lecture than to repent. It is easier to defend your tone than to say, “I was wrong.” It is easier to stay silent and hope tomorrow resets things automatically. But that parent knocked on the door, sat down, and said: “I'm sorry for how I spoke to you. You matter more than my frustration. Will you forgive me?”And the child—after a pause—said, “I'm sorry too.”That was not a dramatic miracle. No music. No spotlight. Just two people stepping out of hiding. That is Psalm 32 in a kitchen and hallway.* “When I kept silent…”—the house got heavier.* “I acknowledged my sin…”—grace opened the room again.Lent often looks like this: not grand gestures, but truthful repentance. Not pretending we are fine, but choosing repair. Not winning the argument, but preserving communion. And that is where trust is rebuilt—one confession, one apology, one act of mercy at a time.Narrative Lectionary — Lent 1 (Feb 22, 2026)Text: John 11:1–44Theme: From Grief to Glory1) Scripture SummaryLazarus becomes ill and dies, despite Jesus' love for him and his family. Jesus' delay creates anguish for Martha and Mary, who both cry, “Lord, if you had been here….” At Bethany, Jesus enters their sorrow, weeps at the tomb, and then declares, “I am the resurrection and the life.” He calls Lazarus out of death and commands the community to unbind him. The passage reveals both Christ's compassion in the face of grief and his authority over death.2) Unifying Thread“From Tomb to Trust: Jesus meets us in grief and calls life forth.”• The story begins in honest lament and disrupted expectations.• Jesus does not stand outside suffering; he shares it. (“Jesus wept.”)• The center is Christ's identity: resurrection is not only an event, but a person.• The raising of Lazarus becomes a pattern of discipleship: called to life, then unbound for freedom.A Preaching Arc1. The ache — “Lord, if you had been here…”2. The claim — “I am the resurrection and the life.”3. The sign — “Lazarus, come out.”4. The call — “Unbind him, and let him go.”One-sentence takeawayLent invites us to bring our grief to Jesus, trust him in the delay, and respond to his life-giving voice at the very place we fear is final.3) Homily Outline (7–10 minutes)Opening (1 minute)Name the reality of grief, disappointment, and delayed answers in the spiritual life. Introduce the key lament: “Lord, if you had been here…”I. The Delay and the Crisis of Trust (2 minutes)Jesus loves this family, yet Lazarus dies.Explore the tension: divine love and human pain coexist.Pastoral line: delay is painful, but it is not the same as abandonment.II. Jesus at the Tomb (1.5–2 minutes)“Jesus wept.”Emphasize Christ's solidarity with human sorrow.God is not detached from our grief.III. The Center Confession (1.5–2 minutes)“I am the resurrection and the life.”Resurrection is present in the person of Christ, not only a future hope.Call hearers to trust Christ himself in present sorrow.IV. Called Out, Then Unbound (1.5–2 minutes)“Lazarus, come out.”“Unbind him, and let him go.”Christ gives life; the community participates in unbinding.Application (1 minute)Name one grief before God each day this week.Pray honestly in the place of delay.Take one concrete “unbinding” step (confession, reconciliation, seeking support, surrender).Closing (30–45 seconds)Christ meets us at the tomb and speaks life where we expect finality.End with hope rooted in his voice, not our circumstances. If you zoom into any single moment of someone's life, you can draw the wrong conclusion.David looks like a hero… until you keep reading.Peter looks unshakable… until the denial.Moses, Abraham—faithful men with very uneven stories. And the same is true for us.In this episode, Jerrad invites you to zoom out on your faith journey. Discipleship isn't an “up and to the right” chart. It's more like the stock market—ups, downs, setbacks, growth—all held together by a faithful God who finishes what He starts. You don't get to crown yourself in the good seasons. And you don't get to condemn yourself in the hard ones.God isn't surprised by your uneven growth. He knew exactly what He was getting when He saved you—and He's still at work.Homework for today:Stop judging your faith by a snapshot. Zoom out. Speak truth out loud. And rest in the faithfulness of God.
