This week, Eisner Award-winning writer Saladin Ahmed joins the AIPT Comics podcast to talk about three very different heroes currently occupying his writing desk: Cheetara, Wolverine, and Bishop. With ThunderCats: Cheetara launching September 9, Ahmed discusses taking one of Third Earth's most mysterious heroes into her own ongoing series, the troubling visions that challenge what she knows about ThunderCats history, working with artist Andrea Arcari, and the freedom Dynamite has given him to push and reshape the mythology. The conversation also returns to the X-Men universe, where Ahmed's working on Wolverine and Bishop. We dig into where both characters currently stand, the distinct challenges of writing two veteran mutants, and what Ahmed is building toward in each series.Visit our Patreon page to see the various tiers you can sign up for today to get in on the ground floor of AIPT Patreon. Cheetara has always been one of the more mysterious ThunderCats because of her visions. What excited you about making those visions the engine of an ongoing series rather than just a supporting trait?2. The solicitation mentions voices that contradict the Book of Omens and even praise the Mu'Tants. Were you interested in exploring how faith or certainty can be challenged when someone suddenly has conflicting truths?3. One thing I've always liked about Cheetara is that she's often the calmest person in the room while everyone else is reacting emotionally. How did you approach giving her an internal journey that still feels true to that personality?4. This is your first project with Dynamite and your first time writing ThunderCats. What surprised you most once you started digging into the mythology? Was there a corner of the universe you found yourself unexpectedly fascinated by?5. Andrea Ancari is relatively new to American readers. What did you see in his storytelling that made him the right artist for a book balancing action, visions, and psychological mystery?6. ThunderCats has existed across cartoons, comics, and multiple reinterpretations over decades. Were there specific versions of Cheetara you found yourself drawing inspiration from, or did you intentionally try to build your own voice for her?Wolverine / X-Men questions1. One thing I've really enjoyed in your Wolverine run is seeing Logan genuinely vulnerable again. Between the broken claws and now the healing factor failing, what opportunities does a weakened Wolverine create that an invincible Wolverine simply can't?2. Wolverine #21 was almost a bottle episode, with Logan and Nightcrawler just trying to relax before everything goes wrong. How important are those quieter character issues when you're writing someone who's usually defined by violence?3. Julius Ohta has become a fantastic collaborator on the series. Are there moments where his storytelling or acting has changed the way you approached later scripts?Bishop / X-office questionWith both Wolverine and Bishop, you've been working inside a very interconnected X-Men line. How much collaboration happens behind the scenes? Bonus fun questionYou've now written everything from Miles Morales to Wolverine, Daredevil, and now Cheetara. Is there a dream character or franchise that still sits on your bucket list where, if the phone rang tomorrow, you'd immediately say yes?

Kicking things into gear, we discuss the latest News that is hitting our radar. With a heart-felt tribute to some of the recent passings; we reflect on what some of these larger than life people have done; & how each of them will be missed. Then we chat towards the very lack-luster reveal of King Hiss from the MOTU Chronicles line. Peacemaker from Mezco 1:12 is arguably the definitive Toy version of this character we will likely ever get! McFarlane wrap things up with their Wave 16 of DC Super Powers - with an interesting line-up of Characters. But with this being the finale; who are we missing from this overall toy line-up? PlayStation One are getting the Lego treatment; which honestly looks great; but what is with their Easter Egg game choices?! Then we pivot into a general chat towards Latest Scores & then followed up with Reading / Playing / Watching. An overall fun episode - if not for Ben continually tripping over his sentences! This week on Bad Dads Film Review, the dads review Giant, the Prince Naseem Hamed biopic starring Amir El-Masry as Naz and Pierce Brosnan as legendary Sheffield trainer Brendan Ingle. It is a boxing film, a mentor-protégé story, a study of fame and arrogance, and a surprisingly knotty argument about whether loyalty, recognition and money can ever stay clean once a child prodigy becomes a multi-million-pound champion. The episode opens with Reegs still absent in French France, which means no clever intro but plenty of warnings about swears and spoilers. Dan has watched classic film noir Laura and revisited Universal Soldier for the Midweeker, Cris has been watching Pierce Brosnan in western series The Son alongside some nostalgic X-Men '97, and Sidey has been back into Barry while also sampling a Netflix serial-killer thriller involving De Niro and missing boys. There is also football, DIY, paint guns, teal walls and the sort of domestic detail that proves cinema podcasting is mostly glamour. For Top 5 Giants, the dads go suitably massive. Dan starts with The Iron Giant and the animated BFG, while Cris brings in Romanian basketball player Gheorghe Mureșan via Billy Crystal's My Giant, then stretches the theme through the MonsterVerse, The Odyssey, Leprechaun 4: In Space and Rush Hour 3. Sidey nominates Fezzik from The Princess Bride, They Might Be Giants, The The's “Giant”, Game of Thrones' actual giants and finally the Giant from Twin Peaks, giving him another chance to declare David Lynch's nightmare television more or less untouchable. The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, Riding Giants and several real-life giants also get thrown into the oversized mix.The main review focuses on Giant as a story about two men rather than one. Prince Naseem is obviously the famous fighter, but the film arguably belongs just as much to Brendan Ingle, whose Sheffield gym gives young lads discipline, community and a way to redirect anger. The dads talk through the early scenes: Brendan spotting young Naz's footwork, taking him into the gym, making new boys sing before they fight, teaching movement before punching, and helping him deal with racist abuse in an environment where National Front attitudes are never far from the surface. As Naz rises, the film follows the familiar sports-biopic path of talent, training, showmanship and success, but the more interesting material comes from the relationship slowly cracking. Brendan nurtures Naz's cockiness because it fuels the fighter, but that same confidence becomes harder to control once promoters, sponsorships, family influence and huge money arrive. Frank Warren sees the commercial value of Naz's brash persona, the family starts questioning Brendan's cut, and the childhood handshake deal over 25% becomes the moral fault line of the film.Sidey and Dan both find that argument more complicated than the film first appears to suggest. Brendan clearly changes Naz's life, puts the money back into the gym, builds champions and cares deeply about the boy he trained from childhood. At the same time, agreeing a huge percentage with a 12-year-old is uncomfortable, however much both of them believed in the dream. The imagined reconciliation scene near the end gives the film its strongest emotional beat, because it lets Naz say he was a child and Brendan say he gave everything. The sting is that, in real life, they never properly reconciled. The performances get the strongest praise. Pierce Brosnan is very good as Brendan Ingle, and the various actors playing Naseem — especially Amir El-Masry as the adult Naz — capture the movement, swagger and showboating well. The fight scenes are convincing, the Sheffield material gives the story texture, and the film does enough with a modest-feeling British production to stay watchable throughout. The verdict is positive but measured. Sidey thinks it is pretty paint-by-numbers and admits he was never a huge fan of Naseem's arrogance, though he respects the story and really likes the performances. Dan enjoys the sports-movie structure and the tragic mentor-student angle, but does not think the film quite lands a knockout blow. Cris had not seen it in time for recording, but the discussion leaves the film sounding like one he would still watch. Overall, the dads call it a moderate to strong recommend: interesting, well acted and easy to watch, if not quite a heavyweight classic. You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. This week on Fantastic Forum, we're taking a look at two animated superhero series that continue to put fresh spins on some of comics' most iconic characters.   First up is X-Men '97 Season 2 on Disney+, as Marvel's Emmy-winning mutant team returns for another season of time travel, massive threats, and personal drama. With the X-Men scattered across different eras after the events of Season 1, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Rogue, Storm, Beast, Magneto, and the rest of the team must find their way home while confronting new dangers, including the arrival of Apocalypse. With returning voices including Ray Chase, Jennifer Hale, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Matthew Waterson, and Ross Marquand, we're breaking down the latest chapter of this beloved revival and asking whether Season 2 can match the extraordinary heights of its predecessor.   Then we head to Metropolis for My Adventures with Superman Season 3 on Adult Swim and HBO Max. Jack Quaid, Alice Lee, and Ishmel Sahid return as Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen as their coming-of-age superhero adventure enters a new chapter. With Clark continuing to balance his life as Superman with his career at the Daily Planet and his relationship with Lois, Season 3 expands the show's mythology while introducing new challenges for the young Man of Steel. We're talking about the latest adventures, the evolving relationships, and what makes this anime-inspired take on Superman such a refreshing addition to the DC Universe.   Watch tonight at 6:30 pm PT and call in live at www.fantasticforum.live to share your thoughts. Who says the late-summer schedule is slow? First, Ben Lindbergh talks to Ringer contributor Adam Nayman about a trio of recent big-screen releases: 'The End of Oak Street,' 'The Dog Stars,' and 'Coyote vs. Acme.' In addition to those three films, they discuss the summer box office, the year in movies as a whole, and the best live-action and animation hybrid movies. Then, Jomi Adeniran and Daniel Chin join for an animation roundup as they explore some superhero and 'Star Wars' stories that slipped through the cracks in a month headlined by 'Lanterns,' 'X-Men '97,' and 'Star Wars Zero Company.' They look at 'My Adventures With Superman' Season 3, 'Batman: Caped Crusader' Season 2, 'Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall' and 'Star Wars: Visions Presents—The Ninth Jedi.' D23 delivered some HUGE announcements for Marvel fans, and we're breaking down the biggest news, trailers, casting reveals, and theories coming out of the event! In this episode of SuperHero Homies, we dive into the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer, the latest MCU X-Men casting announcements, Doctor Doom, Incursions, Mr. Sinister, Jean Grey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Kingdom Hearts, and the premiere of DC's Lanterns! AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY TRAILER BREAKDOWN We start with the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer and everything it potentially reveals about Marvel's next massive crossover event. We discuss: • Doctor Doom's role in Avengers: Doomsday • Could Doom experience a heel turn during the movie? • Doctor Doom's potential motivations and master plan • Why Incursions may be the REAL threat • How Incursions work in Marvel Comics • Which Avengers could die in Doomsday • The movie's biggest trailer reveals • How Doomsday could set up Avengers: Secret Wars • Our theories for the future of the MCU Doctor Doom may be positioned as the movie's major antagonist, but we're theorizing that the true threat could be much bigger than any individual villain. With the Multiverse collapsing and Incursions threatening entire realities, could Doom actually become necessary to saving the MCU? And with the stakes this high, we're asking the painful question: Which Avengers aren't making it out alive? MCU X-MEN CASTING & THEORIES Next, we dive into the new X-Men casting announcements and theorize about Marvel Studios' upcoming 2028 X-Men movie. We discuss: • The new MCU X-Men cast • Which mutants could join the team • What Marvel's version of the X-Men could look like • Mr. Sinister's potential role • Could Mr. Sinister be the main villain? • Jean Grey's future in the MCU • Mutants finally becoming a major part of Marvel Studios • How the X-Men could connect to the post-Secret Wars MCU We also discuss Jean Grey's role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and how her story could directly influence the upcoming X-Men movie. Could Spider-Man actually help lay the groundwork for Marvel's mutant era? MR. SINISTER We get particularly nerdy discussing Mr. Sinister, his comic book history, obsession with mutant genetics, and why he could be an excellent villain for the MCU's first major X-Men story. After years of Magneto dominating X-Men adaptations, is it finally time for another classic mutant villain to take center stage? KINGDOM HEARTS RETURNS! We also briefly discuss the surprising announcement of a new Kingdom Hearts TV series and a new Kingdom Hearts game. What could a Kingdom Hearts television adaptation even look like? How heavily will Disney characters be involved? And are we prepared to once again pretend we understand the Kingdom Hearts timeline? LANTERNS EPISODE 1 Finally, we jump over to DC Studios for our thoughts on the first episode of Lanterns. And so far... We really like it! We discuss our first impressions, the show's characters, mystery, tone, and why we're excited to see where the series takes Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and the Green Lantern mythology. JOIN THE DISCUSSION What was the biggest D23 announcement? What is Doctor Doom's real plan? Which Avengers survive Doomsday? Who should join the MCU X-Men? Could Mr. Sinister finally get his time to shine? And what did YOU think of Lanterns Episode 1? Let us know in the comments! X-Men '97 Season 2 has officially come to an end! After an incredible first season, did Marvel Animation manage to recapture the magic, or did Season 2 bite off more than it could chew? In this episode of SuperHero Homies, we give our full spoiler-filled review of X-Men '97 Season 2 Episodes 5-9, including the season finale, Apocalypse, Nightcrawler, the incredible action and animation, our biggest criticisms, and what we want from X-Men '97 Season 3. But first, we've got a hefty 40-minute cold open! COLD OPEN: FIRST 40 MINUTES DRAGON CON 2026 We're heading to Dragon Con starting September 3rd, and we'll be there all weekend! We're excited to experience the convention and hopefully meet some fellow SuperHero Homies along the way. If you see us wandering around Dragon Con, come say hello! SODA CITY COMIC CON We also recap our trip to Soda City Comic Con, where we had the opportunity to meet Wilson Bethel, better known as Bullseye from Daredevil and Daredevil: Born Again, and the legendary Peter Weller, star of RoboCop. We share stories from both encounters and our overall experience at the convention. ARE THE FOX X-MEN MOVIES UNDERRATED? With X-Men hotter than ever, we revisit the Fox X-Men movie franchise and ask whether these films deserve more credit. The franchise definitely had some lows, but movies like Logan and X-Men: Days of Future Past remain among the greatest comic book movies ever made. So... have we been too hard on the Fox X-Men? THE BATMAN JOINS THE DCU?! Could Matt Reeves' Batman eventually be folded into James Gunn's larger DC Universe? We discuss the possibility of Robert Pattinson's Batman sharing the screen with David Corenswet's Superman, whether that combination could actually work, and what it would mean for the future of the DCU. We also discuss our excitement for Batman: Knightfall Part 1 and the chilling new Absolute Batman Mr. Freeze origin story. LANTERNS We're loving Lanterns! Unfortunately, we haven't had enough time to review the series weekly, but we give our thoughts on what we've seen so far and why we can't wait to give the show a proper review. X-MEN '97 SEASON 2 FULL SPOILERS After the cold open, we dive into X-Men '97 Season 2 Episodes 5-9 and the finale. There's still a LOT to love about this series. The animation, voice acting, superhero action, fight scenes, comic book references, and character work remain top-notch. Certain characters and storylines are handled exceptionally well, particularly Nightcrawler, who continues to be one of our favorite characters. But Season 2 also left us frustrated. We discuss: • Apocalypse and his Season 2 storyline • The disappointing conclusion to the overarching conflict • Why certain Apocalypse storylines feel half-baked • Nightcrawler's fantastic character development • The incredible animation and voice acting • Some of the season's best fight scenes • Our favorite and least favorite moments • The disjointed storytelling • Season 2's pacing problems • How Season 2 compares to Season 1 • The X-Men '97 Season 2 ending • Our theories and predictions for Season 3 Our biggest issue is that Season 2 simply needed more room to breathe. There are great ideas throughout these episodes, but important story beats sometimes move so quickly that they don't receive the emotional weight or development they deserve. The overarching Apocalypse storyline is especially frustrating because such an iconic X-Men villain deserved a more fulfilling conclusion. That doesn't mean we've suddenly stopped loving X-Men '97. Far from it. We still think this is an excellent superhero animated series with fantastic characters, gorgeous animation, phenomenal action, and a clear love for Marvel Comics and X-Men history. Season 1 simply set an incredibly high bar, and Season 2 doesn't quite reach it. We're still VERY excited for X-Men '97 Season 3, and we're hoping Marvel Animation slows things down just enough to let its biggest moments breathe. JOIN THE DISCUSSION Did X-Men '97 Season 2 stick the landing? Was Apocalypse handled properly? Was Season 1 better? And what do YOU want to see in Season 3? Let us know in the comments!
