This is Firestar's origin story, arguably a more accurate and official one than the (worse) one that she gets in the comic books later on because Angelica Jones was invented specifically for Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. We loved this origin story for her because it involves her pushing back against a sociopathic mean girl at school and, perhaps best of all, the X-Men are in this episode. Storm makes the mistake of asking Firestar for her backstory, which is why we get to hear an extremely lengthy summary of every single time Angelica got bullied for being a mutant (and for being poor). You know who else is in this episode? The Juggernaut, bitch. Join Luis and Ric as they revisit the movie that helped launch the modern superhero era: X-Men (2000). More than twenty-five years after its release, does the film still hold up? The guys discuss their favorite scenes, standout performances, memorable moments, and the casting choices that helped define Marvel movies for an entire generation. Beyond the action and special effects, they also explore the deeper themes that have made X-Men endure for decades. From Magneto's origins in Auschwitz during the Holocaust to the ongoing struggles of mutants seeking acceptance in a fearful world, the film presents powerful ideas about prejudice, discrimination, identity, and belonging. The conversation also examines why many viewers have connected the mutant experience to the real-world experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals and other minority communities who have faced exclusion, misunderstanding, or discrimination. The guys discuss how these themes continue to resonate with audiences today and why the X-Men story remains one of Marvel's most meaningful allegories. When Skybound announced M.A.S.K. would be joining the Energon Universe, fans immediately had questions. How would Matt Trakker and Miles Mayhem fit alongside Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Void Rivals? Out this week, we sat down with writer Dan Watters and artist Pye Parr to discuss updating the classic property, designing its iconic vehicles, and why M.A.S.K. offers a unique perspective within the larger Energon Universe. We're running the full uncut interview, featuring even more discussion on cool cars, character dynamics, action sequences, and what readers can expect from the series moving forward. Plus, we recap the biggest comics news of the week, share our favorite new releases, and much more. Joe, Transformers, and its own thing. What aspects of the original property were most important to preserve, and where did you see opportunities to reinvent it for the Energon Universe? Matt Trakker's introduction is fascinating because he's being hunted by the military, yet it quickly becomes clear he wants to be captured. Why was that the right way to introduce him, and what does it reveal about who he is in this version of M.A.S.K.? Miles Mayhem comes across as both calculating and completely unhinged. His fear of Transformers and extraterrestrial threats gives him a very different motivation than a typical villain. What interested you about making him someone who might see himself as humanity's last line of defense? One of the most exciting ideas in M.A.S.K. has always been vehicles transforming into weapons and armor systems. Pye, what was the challenge of updating those iconic transformations for modern audiences while still capturing the toyetic fun fans expect? Dan, after writing Destro, what was appealing about tackling another corner of the Energon Universe? Did your experience with Destro help shape how you approached M.A.S.K., or did you want this book to have a completely different flavor? The first issue hints at a larger arms race involving technology and weapons that may not even originate on Earth. How much of M.A.S.K. is a spy thriller versus a science-fiction story, and where does it fit tonally alongside Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Void Rivals? Bruce Sato and Gloria Baker are positioned as key new recruits. What qualities do they bring to M.A.S.K. that complement or challenge Matt Trakker's leadership style? The original M.A.S.K. comic debuted in 1987 and had a very different view of global threats and military organizations. Were there any specific elements from that era that you deliberately updated to reflect modern anxieties and geopolitics? Fun question: If you could each claim one M.A.S.K. vehicle and mask from the entire franchise to use in real life for a week, which would you pick and what completely irresponsible thing would you do with it?

The Future of Destiny 2: What You Need to Know About Its Last Update Meta Description: Discover the latest on Destiny 2’s final update and what it means for players. Learn about server shutdowns, content changes, and the future of Bungie’s game development. Opening ParagraphDestiny 2 players are facing a significant change as Bungie announces the end of new content updates for the game. With the last update rolling out on June 9th, many players are left wondering what this means for their beloved game. In this post, we’ll break down the details of this final update, what players can expect, and the implications of Bungie’s shift in focus towards new projects like Marathon. The Last Hurrah for Destiny 2 The announcement that June 9th will mark the last official update for Destiny 2 has sent shockwaves through the community. This beloved game was initially designed to be a long-term project, with developers promising a decade of content and updates. Unfortunately, it appears that the game will only last about eight and a half years. After numerous expansions and updates, players are left with more questions than answers. Why Is Destiny 2 Shutting Down? A Shift in Focus: Bungie has decided to shift its resources away from Destiny 2 to focus on a new project, Marathon, which is a departure from their previous titles. Player Engagement: Many players have expressed frustration with the game’s direction, citing paywalls and a lack of engaging content as reasons for their dwindling interest. What Will the Last Update Include? The final update promises to shake things up significantly: Buffs to Primary Weapons: Players can expect a revamp of weapon dynamics, which could alter the game’s balance. Removal of Portals: This change will impact gameplay mechanics, forcing players to adapt to new strategies. A Final Showdown: The update aims to bring all players together for one last epic experience before the game transitions to its new phase. The Community Reaction The community’s response to the shutdown announcement has been mixed. Many players feel a sense of loss, having invested time and money into the game. Others see it as an opportunity for Bungie to finally move on from a game that has seen better days. Players’ Concerns Future of the Game: With the servers going offline, many are left wondering if they can ever return to the game in the same capacity. Home Servers: Some players are exploring the possibility of creating private servers to keep the game alive amongst friends. What's Next for Bungie? As Bungie shifts its focus to Marathon, players are left to ponder the future. Will Bungie learn from the mistakes made during Destiny 2's lifecycle? New Horizons with Marathon Concept Overview: Marathon is a new shooter set in a unique digital world, focusing on extracting data from enemies. Expectations: Players are hoping for a smoother launch and a more engaging experience that avoids the pitfalls of paywalls and repetitive content. Conclusion The end of Destiny 2 as we know it marks a pivotal moment in gaming history. While the last update has the potential to offer an exhilarating finale, it also raises questions about Bungie’s direction and commitment to its player base. As the gaming community pivots towards new projects, it remains to be seen how Bungie will navigate this transition and what it will mean for dedicated fans of Destiny 2. Key Takeaways June 9th marks the last update for Destiny 2, signaling the end of an era. Players can expect significant changes in gameplay dynamics with the final update. Bungie is shifting focus towards its new project, Marathon, in hopes of revitalizing its offerings. Cut Chemist has been on my list since the day I started this podcast, so getting him on for Episode 85 was a real full-circle moment. He's someone whose records genuinely shaped how I dig and how I think about putting samples together, and across this conversation he traces the whole arc — from kicking along to a Bobby Darin concert in the womb, to a McDonald's straw on a snare drum, to Star Wars soundtracks, to the moment hip hop landed for him in 1983.We get deep into the Hollywood scene that raised him, the Rhino Records parking-lot quarter bins where he and his friends amassed beats nobody had touched, and the Jungle Brothers album that made him realise he could make "a record made out of records."From Unity Committee into Jurassic 5, sharing the production chair with Nu-Mark, the all-45s leap into Brain Freeze with DJ Shadow, the solo tightrope of The Audience's Listening, and right up to his candlelit listening parties now — this one's a masterclass in following the unfamiliar. It's long, it's nerdy in all the right places, and I couldn't have asked for more from a guest who's influenced me this much.In this episode we cover:His earliest musical memories — parents, live drums, Carpenters and a deep sci-fi soundtrack obsessionDiscovering hip hop in 1983 via KDAY, breakdancing, graffiti and the elements one at a timePublic Enemy, Bomb Squad and why Main Source is his production templateThe Jungle Brothers album that turned him into a samplerLearning gear the hard way — reel-to-reel, Roland S10, MPC, the Pro Tools learning curveForming Jurassic 5 out of Unity Committee, and the east-coast heart in a west-coast cityPre-internet sample sleuthing and the legendary Rhino Records quarter binsFirst DJ gigs at 15, learning to cut, and the up-and-down fader style that became his ownQbert and the 1996 X-Men vs Scratch Pickles battleA digging philosophy: is the juice worth the squeeze?Sharing production with Nu-Mark, building Lesson 6, and breaking in Europe with Mr FormatThe Rare Equations mix, the Number Song remix and the all-45s origins of Brain FreezeOzomatli, Brazilian and African digging, and constructing a set like a compositionThe Audience's Listening at 20, The Garden in Brazil, and the Italy trip that changed everythingThe Good Life Cafe education and record shopping with Biz MarkieStable Sound, the Bandcamp subscription, and his candlelit psychedelic sound bathsOn Keb Darge, on Edan, and the Expert of None shows coming next
