On this episode of Random Encounter, we're talking about two of the biggest games out this fall.First up, The Blood of Dawnwalker is a long-awaited title from a new studio made up of many of the creators behind The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. And while that CD Projekt Red DNA is all over this project, it does a ton of new things that push forward the genre of open-world RPGs. Zek absolutely loved it, thinking that, in many ways, it was even better than The Witcher 3!Then, Bob is here to talk about the new turn-based strategy Star Wars game, Star Wars Zero Company. Heavily inspired by XCOM, Zero Company is set during the Clone Wars, introducing an entirely new cast of characters (while also having some cameos from some old favorites who hate sand). Are XCOM and Star Wars a great combination? Bob certainly seems to think so!Featuring: Jono Logan, Jerry Williams, and Zek Lu; Edited by Jono LoganGet in Touch:RPGFan.comRPGFan ShopEmail us: podcast@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomBluesky: @rpgfan.bsky.socialInstagram: @rpgfancomThreads: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancomThis Episode's Related Links:The Blood of Dawnwalker ReviewStar Wars Zero Company Review

The upcoming English release of Sword World RPG, a Japanese staple originally created by Group SNE in 1989. Mugen Gaming is producing the first official English translation of the 2.5 edition, with a Backerkit campaign scheduled to launch on October 20. This release seeks to bridge Eastern and Western fantasy gaming traditions by introducing the long-running franchise to a global audience. The interview with the original creator and current president of Group SNE sounds optimistic that this Japanese version of Dungeons and Dragons will resonate with current a whole new English-speaking audience. You can pre-order now for an exclusive enamel pin commerating the release. The Lancer TTRPG is set to receive two official hardcover book releases in March 2027, published by Dark Horse Books in partnership with Massif Press. Operation Fulcrum Dawn will compile the narrative modules Operation Solstice Rain and Operation Winter Scar, while the Lancer Setting Guide Vol. 1 will collect digital supplements including The Long Rim and The Karrakin Trade Baronies. These books represent a significant shift from digital-only PDF availability to physical print formats for the sci-fi mech RPG. Magic: The Gathering‘s upcoming Zeta Set, in collaboration with the artist collective MSCHF, challenging the industry practice of selling randomized booster packs at a $20 premium price point. A documentary celebrating the 50-year history of the sci-fi RPG Traveller is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarer. Filmmaker “Tex” is collaborating with original creator Marc Miller to produce this project, which aims to chronicle the game’s evolution and community for a planned 2027 release. This seems like a fitting tribute for such an influential TTRPG. Why didn’t and other games receive this same treatment? The Blood of Dawnwalker proves the old adage, “The worse the name, the better the game.” The debut from Rebel Wolves, a studio composed in part of CD Projekt Red veterans, is a grim fantasy RPG set in the Carpathian mountains in the thick of the Black Plague. It looks and feel at first like the The Witcher series, though give it a few hours, and you'll see this isn't reheated leftover. It's got vampires and time management and bears too powerful to be bitten by a bloodsucker! To talk about this gem, we're joined by Fire Escape Cast's Mary Kish! Episode #439 of BGMania: A Video Game Music Podcast. Today on the show, Bryan and Bedroth have a long overdue one. We're finally highlighting the career of Michiru Yamane, a composer whose name has become inseparable from gothic grandeur even as her catalog stretches far beyond the castle walls she's best known for. After studying composition at Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music, where she built her thesis around Bach, Yamane joined Konami in 1988 and spent over two decades there, composing for more than forty games. From tiny handheld chips and loud arcade cabinets to the orchestral heights of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, she proved again and again that a classical foundation could bend to almost any hardware, genre, or mood. We're tracing the full arc of Yamane's journey, from one of her earliest credited jobs in 1990 all the way to the Castlevania theme that launched her legend. Along the way, we stop in on lush RPG worldbuilding, a beat-'em-up that never left Japan, a jazz-soaked fighting game, an indie love letter to the exact genre she helped define, and the freelance era that saw her wandering happily outside her comfort zone. From haunted halls to lounge-jazz curtain calls, this Composer Appreciation episode is dedicated to an artist whose fingerprints are all over the medium, whether you realized it or not. We're back with Pathfinder Wizards, and somehow giving Tyler ten more levels of spellcasting has not improved the situation. Ash has evolved from sneaky magical assassin into a nearly undetectable menace who can freeze time and ruin your life before you know he was there. Randall has discovered that there is apparently no such thing as enough bonded-item spell slots. And Tyler's angry robot can now scream at you until you die, drop meteors on your friends, and disintegrate whatever is left. At this point, these aren't adventurers. They're reasons cities have evacuation plans. SHOW NOTES We're finishing our Pathfinder 2e Wizard builds, taking Ash, Randall, and Tyler from level 11 all the way to level 20. At these levels, the Wizard starts showing exactly where its power lives. New class features are few and far between, defenses remain deeply Wizard-shaped, and some of the high-level feat choices are surprisingly thin. But the spells? The spells get ridiculous. Ash continues turning his Red Mantis Sprite into the world's most irritating magical assassin. Phantasmal Calamity wrecks minds, Redirect Teleportation makes escaping him considerably harder, Duplicate Foe lets him turn your own face against you, and his growing collection of invisibility and stealth abilities eventually makes finding him a campaign objective all by itself. By the time he picks up Disappearance and Legendary Sneak, the plan has basically become: you don't see Ash unless Ash has made a tactical error. Tyler's Rune Lord continues leaning into wrath, explosions, and increasingly hostile interpretations of spellcasting. Blinding Fury makes enemies literally too angry to perceive things properly, Falling Stars brings the expected amount of meteor-related destruction, and Scare to Death gives his angry robot the possibility of simply yelling at someone until they fall over dead. Naturally, Tyler immediately starts figuring out how to combine that with Sure Strike and Disintegrate because apparently death by terror wasn't conclusive enough. Randall keeps feeding the Universalist Wizard's bonded-item engine. Superior Bond and Reprepare Spell give him even more ways to keep spells flowing, because the answer to "When do you have enough spellcasting?" is apparently "What kind of quitter asks that question?" Along the way, we hit some of the Wizard's best high-level toys. Contingency lets you prepare for problems before they happen. Time Beacon lets you rewind a terrible turn and try again. Metallic Meteorite Glyph introduces the exciting tactical concept of repeatedly hitting someone with space rocks. Effortless Concentration frees up actions for sustained spells. Infinite Possibilities gives prepared casters a valuable wildcard when the perfect spell wasn't prepared that morning. Then we reach 10th-rank spells and restraint leaves the building. Ash stops time with Freeze Time and starts planning elaborate traps while everyone else stands around unknowingly waiting for reality to resume. Randall grabs Cataclysm because sometimes the correct number of damage types is all of them. Tyler considers Manifestation, giving him access to nearly any spell he could suddenly decide he needs. There is also an extended disagreement about line of effect after Ash discovers that Phantasmagoria cannot simply murder everyone inside a building without worrying about pesky things like walls. Apparently Pathfinder has rules specifically designed to keep Wizard war crimes within reasonable geographic boundaries. Ash takes the news well. By level 20, everyone somehow lands on Spell Shape Mastery, turning many of their favorite spell-shaping tricks into free actions. Ash becomes harder to identify, read, locate, or meaningfully interact with. Randall takes Lore specifically about Ash's Sprite, immediately putting himself on Ash's hit list. Tyler takes Too Angry to Die, because there was really no other possible ending for the angry robot. Twenty levels later, the Wizard remains exactly what it promised to be: fragile, complicated, occasionally frustrating, and capable of solving problems with a spell list large enough to qualify as infrastructure. KEY TAKEAWAYS High-level Wizards are still defined more by their spells than their class features. The Wizard's defensive and weapon progression remains painfully slow, so positioning and magical defenses continue to matter. High-level spellcasting is where the class really comes alive, with options like Contingency, Time Beacon, Phantasmal Calamity, Falling Stars, Disappearance, and a frankly unreasonable number of meteor-related solutions. Ash's Red Mantis build becomes an extremely capable infiltrator and assassin built around stealth, deception, illusions, invisibility, and making other people look responsible. Tyler's Rune Lord doubles down on damage, persistent effects, intimidation, and the general philosophy that being angry enough should eventually become a damage type. Randall's Universalist shows how powerful Drain Bonded Item can become when you keep investing in ways to recover and recycle spells. Reprepare Spell trades downtime for reusable low-rank utility, while Infinite Possibilities sacrifices some raw spell-slot power for tremendous flexibility. Effortless Concentration is an easy standout for Wizards who rely on sustained spells. Scare to Death on an angry Rune Lord is exactly as stupid and wonderful as it sounds. 10th-rank spells are deliberately limited, but Freeze Time, Cataclysm, Manifestation, and the other options make that single slot feel appropriately enormous. Spell Shape Mastery is a fantastic capstone if your build has invested heavily in spell-shaping feats. Free Archetype opens even more directions, including Rogue or Captivator for Ash's assassin, additional spellcasting options for Randall, and apparently more explosions for Tyler. Pathfinder's line-of-effect rules are all that stand between civilization and unrestricted Wizard war crimes. Most importantly, Tyler got twenty full levels of Wizard and still wanted more. The National Football League, with all its attendant huddles and wide receiving and roughings of the passer, is about to begin a new season. And although the touchdowns will make the highlight reels, we here at the show are big fans of the little moments when things don't work out so well. We like when the punter comes out. So we're bringing back an episode from a recent Super Bowl with veteran punter Chris Kluwe. How much goes into punting? Turns out A LOT. Chris, who is a published author and game designer as well, guides us through each minute step of the punting process (and there are maybe, conservatively, a zillion steps) in enough detail to easily zonk you out to sleep. Westwood Studios wasn't always known for the command and conquer series. While 1992's Dune 2 laid the foundation for the RTS genre as a whole, they were more famous for their dungeon crawling RPGS, usually associated with Dungeons and Dragons. So when they decided to develop a new IP with Lands of Lore, they were coming to it as grizzled veterans, and they had no intention of messing around. It was released to near universal acclaim. Critics praised near everything about it - graphics, combat, puzzles, even the UI. It was considered to be less cruel than other dungeon crawlers, less punishing and with greater clarity when it came to puzzles and enemies. But this was 1993. The genre that Lands of Lore belongs to is very nearly dead, with only the indie scene keeping it alive by the skin of its teeth. As the genre developed, slow and methodical dungeon crawling was trumped by real time demon slaying, something that even the sequels to the game were not immune to. The friction of delving into a dungeon where death lay at every turn, and confusion reigned is something that we see very rarely today. Is this with good reason? Have we moved on from what Lands of Lore has to offer? Or is it still worth playing all these years later? On this episode, we discuss:UI. Lands of Lore has a very unique UI, with heavy use of screen space dedicated to inventory and spells and only a relatively small window showing you the real time action of what your party is doing. Does this offer excellent functionality, or is it just a bunch of wasted space for no good reason?Combat. Combat is turned based, but movement is real time. Attacking and spellcasting are tied to cooldowns, but using items is not. Enemies chase you in pods when aggroed, but you are free to rest and heal to full at any point. Do the contradictions in the combat systems of Lands of Lore exist for a reason, or does it just become a complete mess? Level Design. Lands of Lore's dungeons are elaborate mazes, filled to the brim with traps, treasure and buttons. Progressing through them is difficult, it's easy to get lost or stuck, and much of the environments look the same. Is this part of the fundamental experience of playing a dungeon crawler, and part of the fun, or is it simply an exercise in frustration? We answer these questions and many more on the 141st episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast! — Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen K Outro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to another Lands of Lore OST - Frank Klepacki — Is Lands of Lore a good entry point into the blobber genre? What were your experiences playing this one on release? If we were to play another one, which one should we tackle next? Send us Fan MailWelcome to you heard it hear last where we talk about news, you've already heard.Paizo is in the news again. But this time it sounds like good newshttps://www.enworld.org/threads/paizo-may-finally-get-its-inventory-back-from-bankrupt-diamond.720248/It seems that Paizo and Diamond Comics Distributors have reached an agreement to release millions of dollars of Paizo inventory they have held since January of 2025. Diamond Comics originally intended to sell the stock to pay their bills, but a flurry of legal activity brought that to an end. This agreement is a big deal for Paizo.I attended the Paizo address at GenCon and was very critical of the way it was structured. It was clear to me that Paizo built a wall to avoid having to talk about any of their financial troubles, but after this announcement it is clear that they couldn't because of this legal settlement.Mike, what does this news mean for Paizo going forward?[Kick to Mike]Christina, Will Paizo bounce back right away or will it take some time to get their stride back?[Kick to Christina]Up next is as they say, something completely different, and I think that is pretty cool.https://www.enworld.org/threads/classic-horror-dark-conspiracy-rpg-returns-using-traveller-rules.720279/The classic dark horror urban fantasy game Dark Conspiracy's is back and this time with a different rules system. Dark Conspiracy was originally printed by Games Designer's Workshop in 1991 and the setting was post-apocalyptic where the players were demon hunters facing off against an incursion of monsters in a near future world. The game has had three editions by three different companies, but the new version is being published by Mongoose and will be using the Traveller rules. That might be a first for me. I don't think I have seen the Traveller rules used to play anything other then Sci-Fi. I love Traveller so I think this is pretty cool. I only hope they keep the lifepath system.Mike, What do you make of this?[Kick to Mike]Christina, what about you, does this interest you?[Kick to Christina]And there you have it, all the news, you've already heard.

Heinrich, you've been with us on MUP before, for a special episode where we played through your Guide to Character Creation. But for those few folks who don't know you yet, tell us who you are! [Heinrich does so] Year of the Goat was an anthology of 12 scenarios, by 12 different authors, and in bringing it to life, Heinrich and I learned a LOT. We want to pass those lessons on to the listeners, both to encourage you to try putting together your own collaborative projects, and to help you get over some of the barriers. Level-set: What is a Collaborative Project? Why do it? A written project where two or more people are contributing text, editing, art, or other skills and content. It can have one or two people leading the project, or be a collaboration of equals Some critical tools and tips for doing this well: Clear Concept Concept paper Topics – what's in scope and not Any content restrictions Clear format and requirements Templates Style guide Word Count Clear roles and responsibilities Writing Editing (different kinds) – who has final say over text? Art (including providing inspiration or public domain art) Marketing (including promos, submitting for nominations, making videos, sending to reviewers) Deadlines and contingencies Payment split – ideally, decide on this BEFORE ANYONE DOES WORK  Homework Dear listener, tell us – have you led a collaborative writing project for Call of Cthulhu or another system? This episode breaks down the prompt structure, explains why DMs buy convenience content, and shows the specific market opportunity overlooked by most AI entrepreneurs. https://DarkHorseEntrepreneur.com This episode explains how tabletop RPG creators are using a two-pass AI workflow to generate balanced, ready-to-run D&D 5e campaigns quickly and monetize them through Patreon, arguing this is an overlooked micro-business. It outlines why DMs buy convenience content, cites a growing market for pre-built campaigns, and shows a detailed prompt structure that uses official encounter-balancing formulas plus a second refinement pass in another model to improve balance, pacing, and coherence. It emphasizes that success depends less on content creation and more on repeatable systems, subscriber acquisition and retention, and audience-building via TikTok/YouTube Shorts, including using subscriber requests to drive loyalty. It also describes higher-paying customers (streaming DMs), backend monetization through licensing to publishers and marketplaces, risks from shifting AI behavior requiring documented prompts and quality gates, and a potential future SaaS tool that could disrupt Patreon sellers. 00:00 AI DnD Side Hustle 01:18 DM Pain And Demand 02:18 Encounters Are Algorithms 03:06 Base Prompt Blueprint 04:08 Specificity And Constraints 04:48 Two Pass Quality System 06:08 Patreon Content Calendar 07:25 Retention And Requests 08:36 Premium Streaming Clients 09:51 Marketing Reality Check 11:03 Patreon As Funnel 12:17 Scaling And Version Control 13:13 SaaS Disruption Angle 14:06 Build Moats With Systems 15:00 System Over Content 15:50 Whiskered Wisdom 16:42 Action Step 17:23 Wrap Up AI side hustle, Make money with AI, Patreon subscriptions, licensing, SaaS, ChatGPT business ideas, prompt framework, generating D&D campaigns, AI content creation, campaigns, NPC stat blocks, encounter modules, D&D campaign generator, tabletop RPG, make money online, TTRPG, Dungeons & Dragons, D&D, Roll20, D&D Beyond, Wizards of the Coast, Patreon, ai automation business, online side hustles, business motivation, work from home, business mindset, entrepreneur motivation, entrepreneurship, ai content creation, side hustle ideas, entrepreneur mindset, business tips, how to make money online, make money from home, ai automation agency, AI, AI Tools, ai entrepreneur, make money online, side hustle ideas, make money from home, online side hustles, AI start up ideas, entrepreneur, ai business https://DarkHorseEntrepreneur.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
