The Independent Characters - A Warhammer 40k Podcast | Radio
In episode 262 of The Independent Characters, we delve deep into the shadows of the Imperium with a close look at Imperium Maledictum, the Warhammer 40,000 roleplaying game from Cubicle 7. Carl is joined by guest hosts Lars, Thom, and Steve; each bringing their unique RPG experience to the table, as we unravel the mysteries and mechanics of this investigative game set in the decaying heart of the Imperium. We begin with an exploration of the setting: This is a desperate and fractured region of space known as the Macharian Sector. The players serve shadowy patrons; from Inquisitors, Rogue Traders and Adeptus Mechanicus. Adventures revolve around investigations and surviving political intrigue, heretical threats, and the oppressive weight of Imperial bureaucracy. The game's tone is one of paranoia, secrets, and moral ambiguity - perfectly capturing the essence of the Warhammer 40k universe from a civilian perspective. Then we dive into the core mechanics and ruleset of Imperium Maledictum. From the D100-based skill checks to the Patron system that shapes your party's resources and objectives. We will explore how the game encourages teamwork, narrative depth, and immersive roleplaying. Whether you're a veteran of previous Warhammer RPGs, such as Rogue Trader or Dark Heresy, or new to roleplaying in the 41st Millennium, this episode will help you understand why Imperium Maledictum stands out as a compelling and richly detailed approach to role playing. Beth Brophy and Justin Peck hop in the new studio to join Matías in a conversation about nerdy, artistic people who also parent a little on the side! LIVE SHOW DETAILS, at a NEW VENUE: Our next live show will be on Saturday, September 6th, 7:00pm, and it will be located at Studio Four, part of the St. Louis County Depot. The entrance is easy to find at the corner of 5th Avenue West and Michigan Street, and it's nestled between two public parking lots for easy access. The doors open at 6:30pm, the show starts at 7:00, and it is once again completely free! I know change is scary, but there will be concessions on-site, and you'll get to walk past a little culture on the way in from our hosts at the Minnesota Ballet, and our neighbors at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum! --- "Twin Portals" is unofficial Fan Content permitted under the Fan Content Policy. In episode 120 of Game Design Unboxed: Inspiration to Publication we talk with Pete Petrusha of Imagining Games about adapting the Eisner award-winning Image comic series, CHEW, into a Forged in the Dark foodie crime drama TTRPG! They discuss several delicious topics including the concept of meeting needs and answering questions with your game designs (what's something I can play in the hallway with my friends at PAX right now?), obtaining the rights to use ALL the art from the entirety of the comic, incorporating an IP into an RPG - in this case, adapting and building within a pre-existing RPG system to make unique mechanics for the theme - winning an ENNIE award, and more. So take a breather from our clucked up world for a second and listen to some fantastic food for thought! Featuring: Pete Petrusha - Guest Danielle Reynolds - Host

TPK'd by Boredom: The Unearthed Arcana Wizard Review You Didn't Know You Needed (But Absolutely Deserved) This episode is sponsored by Dungeonflow.app — your one-stop shop for prepping tabletop RPGs without needing a Philosopher's Stone or a necromantic ritual. Whether you're building combat encounters, crafting creepy room descriptions, or generating traps that scream "this is absolutely a mimic," DungeonFlow helps you get from “session prep” to “actual fun” faster than a wizard can say Teleport. Try it today and let your players think you actually planned all that chaos. Show Notes: In this second arcane-infused episode of our Unearthed Arcana 2025 Arcane Subclass Review, the RPGBOT.Podcast crew digs into the grimy, glittery, and occasionally disappointing world of Wizard subclasses in Dungeons & Dragons. With a recent brush with TPK in Pathfinder fresh in their minds, the hosts pivot hard into analyzing how these newest subclass offerings stack up in the evolving landscape of tabletop RPG mechanics. We cover the Necromancer and Transmuter in painstaking detail—because someone had to—and explore what happens when spellcasting flavor is buried under generic mechanics. You'll hear: Our collective lamentation over how the 2014 Necromancer outshines its 2025 counterpart like a lich at a zombie-themed talent show. Thoughts on summoning mechanics and why “quantity over quality” isn't cutting it in modern RPG gameplay. How enchantment magic still feels like it belongs in the villain starter pack, and whether that stigma is deserved. A breakdown of the Transmuter's identity crisis—do we really need another subclass pretending to be Fullmetal Alchemist Lite? The case for letting polymorphing shine, and why Split Transmutation sounds way cooler than it actually is. A not-so-gentle rant about teleportation fatigue—yes, it's cool, but must every subclass get a blink-and-you're-there feature? Why holding a spellbook to use subclass features feels like the worst homework assignment in tabletop gaming. And, of course, a discussion on the balance between fun and mechanics, the impact of community feedback, and the ever-ongoing quest for innovative gameplay design in D&D and beyond. Unearthed Arcana: Arcane Subclasses Content from RPGBOT.net UA: Arcane Subclasses Review Key Takeaways: Preparation matters—whether you're avoiding a TPK or building a viable subclass. Necromancers deserve unique summons, not recycled skeletons with a new paint job. Enchantment continues to struggle with its PR campaign. It's not always evil, but it's rarely exciting. Summoning mechanics need a redesign that favors creativity and flavor over sheer volume. Teleportation overload is turning arcane subclasses into a game of magical leapfrog. Holding your spellbook to unlock powers is a mechanic best left in the "Why?" folder. The 2014 Necromancer had more thematic weight and better gameplay synergy. The Transmuter subclass lacks a clear identity and desperately needs a polymorph glow-up. Wondrous Enhancement is a rare bright spot, making Enhance Ability actually feel worth casting. Overall, the Unearthed Arcana material feels like wasted potential—players crave excitement, not just another stack of mechanics. Community feedback is essential—without it, subclasses like these risk fading into obscurity like a wizard failing a concentration check. TSR and Wizards of the Coast veteran Steve Winter (Steve achieved one of the longest tenures across both companies). Steve plays guitar. Steve likes Shadowdark RPG, and is also interested in Knave, Savage Worlds, and Cthulhu / horror games. Steve has a definite favorite version of D&D (he finds it elegant and intuitive). Deep character backstory doesn't equal plot armor. Sometimes we get too used to magic in games and think of it as technology… magic should be a bit fearsome and untame. Noteworthy moments of going insane in a Cthulhu game. Skyrim and Baldur's Gate 3 discussion. Steve co-wrote the scenario for the Gold Box Pool of Radiance game. Some words about Jim Ward. Early versus later days at TSR. The job that was Steve's best year at TSR. How was the work divided at TSR? Steve offers some perspective on Lorraine Williams's leadership, given that he was right there. What was it like to be at TSR and watch Magic: The Gathering explode onto the scene? Steve worked on Spellfire, TSR's response to MtG. What was it like transitioning from TSR to WotC? Star Frontiers: how it went from hard sci-fi to “D&D in space” and how employees' desire for royalties led to its creation (and ultimately to the departure of Lawrence Schick from TSR). After being stabbed in the back, Trix frees themself from Faerlin and notices that Faerlin does not appear to be ensorceled. When they ask why Faerlin would stab them, he reveals that the Emperor would not have abandoned them at the outpost without reason. The pair of Adar-Kai briefly engage in hand-to-hand combat before Eight utilizes the orb to cast a deadly spell at Faerlin. Unknown to Eight, this causes a pale light to glow from the gaps in their plating. Faerlin's next attack brings Trix down, but pays dearly for his decision when Mongo joins the fray. With Faerlin defeated, Erdir teleports into the cavern. Rou seizes the opportunity to invoke his new patron and shift into his wolf form, which reveals his black fur is broken by a single white circle of fur on his left shoulder. Talbain chases after him and quickly closes the gap just before Erdir casts a spell to immobilize Rou. Eight collapses the ceiling on top of Erdir, the gaps between their plating glowing brighter, just as Cela brings Trix back to consciousness. Erdir emerges from the pile of rocks and turns his attention to Talbain, who strikes back with deadly force.Follow Dax @gmdax, Kappa @TheKappaChris, Sebastian @sebastianyue, WallE @walle132 and Wren @ThornyDryad EPISODE CREDITS: Produced by DaxOpening theme music, editing and mixing by WrenLogo Artwork design by JessieCharacter Artwork design by RiyuskiSegment music and sound effects licensed through Epidemic SoundLINKS:Be sure to follow and tag Roads Uncharted on Bluesky!
This session we switch from playing over Skype (R.I.P.) to Discord.... "Now to get the map out the door..." We're celebrating our 10 year anniversary of the Podcast: and the One year anniversary of this campaign! https://www.patreon.com/posts/were-celebrating-103480248 Iron Kingdoms: Requiem combines this fantastic setting with the newest edition of the world's most popular roleplaying game. Inside this book, players will find the history of the Iron Kingdoms and information describing the current state of the world following the Claiming. Alongside these chapters is an extensive gazetteer providing detailed information on the most notable of the world's unique and fascinating locations. When making a character, players will be able to choose from many of the familiar countries and cultures of the setting. Whether a player wants to be a human, gobber, trollkin, Rhulic dwarf, ogrun, Iosan, or Nyss elf, this book provides all the rules that make these different peoples unique. When choosing a class, there are options many players are already familiar with, from the stalwart man-at-arms fighter to the free-flowing monk of the Order of the Fist. Beyond these are brand-new rules for playing the characters that make the Iron Kingdoms such a memorable setting. These new classes include, among others, gun mages, arcane mechaniks, combat alchemists, and warcasters. Alongside these options are new feats, spells, and backgrounds to make characters feel even more a part of the world of the Iron Kingdoms.
Próximo programa: The Fantastic Four - First Steps (Cine) / Fantastic Four: The Galactus Trilogy (Comics).

Rizwan Virk (The Simulation Hypothesis) is an entrepreneur, computer scientist, and bestselling author. Rizwan joins the Armchair Expert to discuss the VR ping pong game that tipped him off we might be in a simulation, his ten stages of singularity that the physical world isn't exactly what we think it is, and comparing the NPC versus RPG versions of the simulation. Rizwan and Dax talk about whether The Matrix was prophetic, if such AI advancement is inevitable how we would know if we're in a simulation, and the observer effect in quantum physics as illustrated by Schrödinger's Cat. Rizwan explains ancient Eastern religious and philosophical origins of the sim, the bizarre notion of consciousness that the past isn't fixed, and the Mandela Effect as evidence of the existence of alternate timelines.Follow Armchair Expert on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts.
