Every tabletop RPG player has had this thought at some point: "If I had one Wish, I could fix everything." And every Dungeon Master has had the immediate follow-up thought: "If you cast Wish, I'm fixing you." In this episode, the RPGBOT crew tackles the most powerful spell in the game—the one that can rewrite reality, end campaigns, summon divine attention, and turn a carefully planned epic into a rules argument that lasts longer than combat at level 17. Whether you're wishing for ultimate power, infinite gold, or just a snack because the barbarian is bored, we're here to explain how Wish actually works… and why your DM is already sweating. Wish is the most powerful spell in tabletop roleplaying games—and one of the most dangerous. In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, we break down how Wish works across Dungeons & Dragons 3.5e, D&D 5e (2014 and 2024), Pathfinder 1e, and Pathfinder 2e, including its lore, mechanics, exploits, and why so many Game Masters fear it. We explore how Wish can replicate spells, rewrite reality, override divine power, and derail entire campaigns if mishandled. The discussion covers infamous loopholes like simulacrum chains, genie-granted wishes, ritual casting in Pathfinder 2e, and why Wish is often the reason high-level campaigns fall apart. Finally, we offer practical GM advice for handling Wish without ruining your game—whether you want it as a campaign capstone, a narrative ritual, or a controlled tool of world-changing magic. Show Notes In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts take an in-depth look at Wish, the iconic reality-altering spell that defines high-level play in Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder. Often called the most powerful spell ever printed, Wish allows characters to replicate spells, heal allies, undo actions, reshape the world, and even challenge the gods themselves—at a steep narrative and mechanical cost. The episode begins with the lore of Wish, including its emergence after the fall of Netheril and its relationship to lost 10th-level magic. The hosts then compare how Wish functions mechanically across editions, from the expensive, tightly worded versions in D&D 3.5e and Pathfinder 1e, to the flexible but risky spellcasting in D&D 5e, and finally the radically redesigned Pathfinder 2e Wish ritual, which introduces casting time, interference, ritual checks, and failure states. A major focus is why Wish is so controversial for Game Masters. The discussion covers campaign-breaking outcomes, narrative paradoxes, infamous exploits like infinite simulacrum armies, and why many tables restrict or ban the spell outright. The hosts also examine genie-granted wishes, highlighting how Pathfinder 2e adds unique wish interpretations based on genie type—ranging from diplomatic and literal to malicious and destabilizing. The episode concludes with practical GM advice on how to handle Wish responsibly: limiting it to core effects, telegraphing consequences, using rituals instead of instant casting, and reframing Wish as a dramatic story event rather than an "I win" button. Key Takeaways Wish is widely considered the most powerful spell in tabletop RPGs, capable of rewriting reality itself. Different systems handle Wish very differently, with Pathfinder 2e's ritual system offering the strongest structural safeguards. In D&D 5e, spell duplication is the safest use of Wish; creative uses risk permanent loss of the spell. Wish is a major reason many GMs avoid or limit high-level campaigns. Genie-granted wishes introduce flavorful but dangerous interpretations, especially in Pathfinder 2e. Successful use of Wish requires clear GM communication, narrative foreshadowing, and player trust. Nothing teaches a rules system faster than throwing it directly into danger. In this episode, the RPGBOT crew does exactly that by unleashing a Pathfinder 2e one-shot designed to show how the rules actually work when dice hit the table. Expect missed attacks, clever teamwork, rules "aha!" moments, and at least one situation where the three-action economy proves it is both elegant and mildly terrifying. Pathfinder 2e Re-Releases! Just in time for holiday one-shots, convention games, and introducing curious relatives to tabletop RPGs, RPGBOT is re-releasing our Pathfinder 2e Quickstart episodes for the 2025 holiday season! These remastered episodes are perfect for GMs running demos, players learning PF2e for the first time, and groups looking for a clean, rules-forward way to start adventuring. Show Notes In Part 3 of the RPGBOT.Quickstart series, we put Pathfinder Second Edition rules into action with a one-shot example play session designed specifically to teach the game through real gameplay. Instead of theory, this episode shows how Pathfinder 2e actions, reactions, skills, and combat mechanics function at the table when players are making real decisions under pressure. The episode walks listeners through initiative, movement, skill checks, and combat rounds, highlighting how the three-action economy creates meaningful tactical choices every turn. We discuss when to Strike, Step, Raise a Shield, Recall Knowledge, and use reactions—showing how Pathfinder 2e rewards teamwork and planning without bogging the game down. This example play is ideal for new players, GMs preparing a Pathfinder 2e one-shot, or anyone who wants to see how PF2e rules flow in practice. By hearing the rules applied in context, listeners gain confidence running or playing Pathfinder Second Edition at their own tables. Key Takeaways Pathfinder 2e is easiest to learn by seeing the rules in action. The three-action economy gives players flexibility and tactical depth. Positioning, teamwork, and smart action use matter more than raw damage. PF2e combat flows quickly once players understand actions and reactions. One-shots are an excellent way to teach Pathfinder Second Edition. Clear rules structure makes PF2e beginner-friendly when demonstrated properly. Example play bridges the gap between reading rules and playing confidently. Join the RPGBOT Patreon! Want to see how these episodes come together before they're released? Mariah and Cleve experience planetfall for themselves. Scene 6 Scene 7 GM Notes Thank you so much for joining us on the journey across Alpha Centauri! I'd also like to thank our amazing players, whose calm and reasonable characters foiled many a plot. As a GM, it's been a delight to be part of such a character-driven narrative. Although this marks the end of our Chronicles of Chiron Genesys campaign, over the next several weeks we'll be sharing some additional adventures from this setting that we played after Cleve's and Mariah's ended, some using other RPG systems. So if you want to join Corazon “Hypercor” Santiago as Jennifer GMs her through a hacking spree, or solve a murder alongside Fritz, or hear about Mariah and Fritz building a new life together after all the chaos dies down, stay tuned! Note: The Lilly and Imogen referred to towards the close of this episode are from our first Dicey Stories campaign, Starcraft: FRAWD Investigators. Our music is from Purple Planet Music. One of the game's main themes — that of a Will to live, a meaning to life to stave off what has been variously called "The Absurd," "Nihilism," and more — is on full display as we see more characters than not grapple with it. THIS EPISODE Ludlov sets out to find his lost friend... ----more---- ABOUT THE STORY The Hounds of Hübschdorf (formerly called 'Grauwald's Game') is an epic fantasy audiobook by Audio Epics that has been released on Halloween, since it has serious dark fantasy and grimdark vibes. This brand new Witch Hunter Tale is the direct prequel to Witch Hunter. If you like a dark adventure story you'll probably enjoy this grim journey in the original fantasy setting of Hruda, inspired by everything we love: RPG settings like the Old World from Warhammer fantasy, eighties fantasy movies and J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth (amongst others). PLOT SUMMARY When three Witch Hunters fail to return from a routine investigation, Master Ludlov and Initiate Tolfmann find themselves in a small village near the woods. While investigating the strange disappearance of their Brethren, it becomes obvious the mayor is not so keen on their arrival, and the villagers seem to prefer the distraction of the Graunacht festivities to their nosing around. When their inquest reveals a dark mystery involving evil magic and undead, Ludlov faces the true cause of the threat in a place more disturbing than he could have imagined. WANT TO SUPPORT US? Ever wondered how many actions it takes to brew a cup of coffee in Pathfinder 2e? The RPGBOT crew did, and we're pretty sure we provoked an opportunity attack from the espresso machine. In this RPGBOT.Quickstart episode, we bravely tackle Pathfinder Second Edition, learn how to read a character sheet without summoning a demon, and maybe, just maybe, figure out what the heck a "reaction" actually is. Whether you're brand-new to PF2e, teaching friends, or planning a holiday gaming binge, our remastered Quickstart series will help you jump right into battles, skill checks, and glorious crits! Show Notes In this introductory episode of the RPGBOT.Quickstart series, we take new players step-by-step into the rules and systems of Pathfinder Second Edition, focusing on what makes the game unique, approachable, and extremely rewarding even at level one. We explore the fundamental differences from other tabletop RPG systems, including the three-action economy, proficiency tiers, skills and training, and how to read your character sheet without consulting a wizard or cleric. Whether you're a brand-new player or transitioning from Dungeons & Dragons, our Pathfinder Second Edition beginner rules breakdown explains character creation, basic mechanics, and how to confidently walk into your first PF2e session without rolling a natural 1 on understanding the rules. We also look at how PF2e combat flows, what kinds of strategies matter, and how actions and reactions drive tactical gameplay. If you're curious about Pathfinder Second Edition, wanting a quickstart guide, or simply preparing your group for a brand-new campaign, this episode has the foundational tips you need to begin adventuring right away. Key Takeaways Pathfinder 2e uses a three-action economy, giving players tactical freedom. Proficiency matters—trained, expert, master, legendary all influence your rolls. What does Starfield look like in 2026?In Episode 53, we zoom out and look ahead at the future of Starfield—specifically the growing rumors around the mysterious Terran Armada DLC and what it could mean for the Settled Systems. From possible large-scale faction conflicts to fleet warfare and political upheaval, we break down what this expansion might be setting up and why it feels different from anything Bethesda has done before. We also dig into potential upgrades to the base game: long-requested quality-of-life improvements, systems Bethesda could overhaul as the game matures, and how ongoing updates and mods may reshape the overall experience heading into the next phase of Starfield's life cycle. Is Starfield slowly evolving into the space RPG it was always meant to be—or is Bethesda gearing up for something much bigger?Chat with us and other fans in our discord!https://discord.gg/exh8H4U9RT

Have you ever wished you could travel back in time, wield 10th-level spells, and tell ancient archmages that "no seriously, this is definitely going to end badly"? Well congratulations, this episode is for you! Today we explore Netheril's majestic flying cities, magical decadence, and the absolute worst urban-planning decision ever: putting time portals in extremely obvious places. Grab your arcane seatbelts; gravity is optional. RPGBOT Video Reviews on YouTube Heads-up, adventurers! RPGBOT review episodes may soon begin appearing in full video on YouTube. If you've ever wanted to see our horrified facial expressions while discussing Netheril's magical OSHA violations—this might be your moment. More information coming soon! Show Notes In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts dive deep into Netheril's Fall, the newest official supplement set during the height (and imminent collapse) of the ancient Netherese Empire. The cast explores Netheril's lore, the rise of magical elitism, the role of 10th-level spells, and the unique position this supplement occupies as mainly a Dungeon Master resource rather than a player-option book. The crew also discusses the magical decadence of flying cities, the oppressive social structure of the High Netherese vs Low Netherese, and introduces magical anomalies that shape how DMs can run Netheril-era adventures. Meanwhile, Tyler, Randall, and Ash debate the biggest question: Should Netheril EVER be saved? Or is this empire truly doomed? Finally, the hosts explore the controversial time-gate mechanics that enable PCs to visit this legendary era. Is this an exciting campaign hook, or a plot hole the size of a mythallar? (Spoiler: opinions are strong.) Key Takeaways Netheril's Fall provides primarily DM-focused content, not player options The supplement covers flying cities, magical aristocracy, and Netherese history Time-travel mechanics are interesting—but potentially world-breaking for campaigns Magical anomalies and arcane hazards add unique adventure hooks Adventures include encounters in both floating cities and ground-level Nethereese settlements Strong lore content connects directly to Forgotten Realms history, Baldur's Gate 3, and classic D&D themes The supplement works best if treated as a mini-campaign or one-shot instead of long-term setting Join the RPGBOT Patreon Want even more deep-dive analysis, lore breakdowns, and behind-the-scenes discussions like this one? Send us a textWelcome to You Heard it Here Last, where we talk about news, you've already heard.https://www.enworld.org/threads/tolkien%E2%80%99s-writing-desk-on-auction-at-christies.716325/Christie's Action House is hosting a live auction in December, 2025 called Groundbreakers: Icons of our Time and in that auction, you will find a simple 19th Century Merton's College Desk that just happened to be owned by JRR Tolkien. The desk is going for a deal at somewhere between 50 and 80 thousand Pounds.ChristinaYou don't strike me as much of a collector? Do these things interest you?[Kick to Christina]Along with the desk they also have the Winchcombe Meteorite, the Kenbak-1 First Personal Computer, and the original cover artwork for the first edition of Warhammer. Definitely some cools stuff for the collector out there.Next up we have two of our favorite things; Netflix and D&D.Yep, I read that in my sarcasm voice.https://www.enworld.org/threads/shawn-levy-provides-update-on-netflix-d-d-show.716209/Shawn Levy the producer for the upcoming live action D&D Show title Forgotten Realms gave a brief update on what's been going on behind the scenes with the show and his answers are, well, Interesting. Levy said "I think that the reason it's taken so long and the reason why it is a challenging process is you're not adapting story IP, You're adapting a world and a lexicon and a spirit, but story needs to be invented largely from scratch. And it needs to be invented in a way that feels organic to everything that's great about DnD. So that one is in very active every day chipping-away-at-it development at Netflix."Let me translate that for you…This show is going to suck.Christina, what do you think?[Kick to Christina]And finally, from all of us to all of you. Whatever you believe in and however you believe it. Just be happy. And there you have it, all the news, you've already heard.
In this episode of The Corner of Story and Game, we sit down with David Gallaher to talk about Creatures and Cocktails, an immersive Dungeons and Dragons experience built to feel welcoming, premium, and deeply communal. David shares how his background across games and comics shaped the way he thinks about “ramp up,” onboarding, and reducing lore overload so new players can jump in without feeling lost.Together, we explore what changes when D and D becomes a live, hosted experience. How you design for comfort and confidence, how you fight choice paralysis, and why the real goal is not telling people a story, but helping a table build a shared one. If you care about narrative design, live play, or building experiences that make people feel seen, this conversation has a lot to steal.Topics Include:Creating a strong “on ramp” for new players without dumping loreDesigning immersive tabletop experiences that feel premiumReducing choice paralysis while preserving player agencyBuilding community rules and values that protect the tableWhy shared authorship creates ownership and deeper play
Welcome to the DSTE Christmas Spectacular!! There's no Joe or Jono this week so Sam takes over hosting duties and is joined by JT and Ste to talk all things games, TV, and film + books this week. We have a Christmassy catch up before JT's new section Joe-Schmo Rage Baiting'! We also take a quick look at the new Street Fighter film trailer, the 2026 reboot directed by Kitao Sakurai and starring Noah Centineo as Ken and Andrew Koji as Ryu. Ste gives his obligatory World of Tanks update, the enduring armoured warfare MMO, and talks with JT about playing The Outer Worlds 2. This much-anticipated sci-fi RPG sequel from Obsidian Entertainment just launched this October, taking players to the new star system of Arcadia. JT played the new Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 game as we discuss the blatant rinse and repeat nature of COD (yet it's still fun) and the campaign (or lack of) vs. online gameplay. The pod has an in depth discussion around how games are priced and marketed around free game models with season pass/DLC. We then drop into Sam's Steam Deck Corner, where he's revisiting Trials Evolution, the 2012 physics-based racer from RedLynx. Next, we open Ste's Book Club to discuss Frank Herbert's 1965 sci-fi epic Dune and a Haruki Murakami marathon covering the melancholic Norwegian Wood (1987), the metaphysical Kafka on the Shore (2002), and the dystopian epic 1Q84 (2009). JT sits us down to tell us all about The Chair Company, the new HBO comedy-thriller from Tim Robinson about a man who uncovers a corporate conspiracy after his chair collapses during a presentation. We also test our Duolingo language skills by watching foreign TV shows: Schlag Den Star, the long-running German celebrity competition; Deutschland 83, the stylish 2015 Cold War spy thriller; and One Cut of the Dead, the ingenious 2017 Japanese meta-zombie film by Shin'ichirō Ueda. Sam covers The Beast In Me, the new Netflix psychological thriller starring Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys, and we chat about the massive Netflix vs. Paramount bids for Warner Bros. Discovery, as the streaming giants fight over the future of HBO and the DC Universe. The feature film this week that is unquestionable a Christmas Film - Jingle All The Way, the 1996 holiday classic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger on a desperate quest for a Turbo-Man action figure. In this episode of Epic Realms, we sit down with game designer Rodney Thompson for an in depth conversation about his journey through tabletop roleplaying games, board games, and video game design. Rodney shares how his early love of Dungeons and Dragons and the West End Games Star Wars RPG shaped his creative path, from college gaming marathons to building homebrew content that eventually opened the door to professional game design. We explore Rodney's time at Wizards of the Coast, including his work on the Star Wars Saga Edition RPG and how lessons from D20 Modern and early fourth edition ideas influenced its structure. Rodney reflects on what worked, what he would change today, and why supporting game masters with strong tools is critical to a game's longevity. The conversation also dives into Rodney's role as a sandbox designer in video games, including his work at Bungie on Destiny. He explains what sandbox design means in both tabletop and video games, how player experience and emotional fantasy drive design decisions, and why iteration and playtesting matter so much across mediums. We also discuss the transition from roleplaying games to board games with Lords of Waterdeep, the lessons learned from physical components and resource management, and how those ideas feed back into RPG design. Finally, Rodney talks about Scratchpad Publishing and his latest tabletop RPG, Neon City Outlaws, a cyberpunk heist and rebellion game that lets players build their city as they play, complete with faction politics, revolution mechanics, and body swapping technology. This episode is a thoughtful look at storytelling through games, creative evolution, and what it means to design experiences that bring people together at the table. This year, a group is traveling to avoid holiday get-togethers in a one-shot of Grant Howitt's Christmas Is Coming, a folk horror RPG, which, honestly tracks for how our holiday one-shots tend to go... We're getting festive today on Rhythm Encounter, but maybe not in the way you'd expect. It's the end of year holiday season, and we are taking inspiration from a holiday that celebrates another thing I like as much as video game music: books! Jólabókaflóðið — which roughly translates to "Christmas book flood" — is an Icelandic Christmas Eve tradition where people gift each other books and stay up reading them, possibly with a nice hot cocoa. We thought this was a great opportunity to provide some excellent video game music to pair with various authors, genres, and specific reads. Please join our assembled panel of connoisseurs as we discuss the two together. Happy reading, listening, and holidays!Featuring: Hilary Andreff, Rob White, Audra Bowling, and Matt Wardell; Edited by Mike SalbatoLinks and books mentioned in this episodeJólabókaflóðið official siteBetween Two Fires - Chris Buehlman (The Road x Dark Souls)Blade Runner “Ash” Comic Series (2019, 2029, 2039) - Michael Green and Mike JohnsonBrave Story - Miyuki MiyabeChronicles of the Avatar Series - F.C.
