I never knew what to expect when travelling with Him. There were days He was quiet and focused, when nothing in the world could pull His attention from the road ahead. Other days it was as though He could not sit still in His own skin, chasing one thought after another as if they fell out of His head faster than He could follow them. The day He bowed his head to an undead king, and very nearly did not rise again, belonged to the former kind of day. He had been silent since dawn, turning something over behind His eyes, and I remember thinking that silence was the surest sign He had already made up His mind about something I would not like. The feigned confusion only guaranteed it for me. The undead paladins stood there in armour gone the colour of old rivers. They did not look up as we entered, and did not look up as He knelt among them, and did not look up even as their king rose from his throne to pronounce, in a voice like a door closing, that the traveller had been summoned to answer for the living. That his death would be a mercy compared to what living men would one day do to the world in his name. I still cannot decide whether He walked into that castle believing they would hear Him, or whether some deeper part of Him already knew they would not, and went anyway. He was like that, in those early days. Hope was not a conclusion He arrived at after weighing the evidence, it was the ground He stood on before the weighing had even begun. It served Him well more often than it should have. It nearly did not, that day.I will not pretend I understood that I was witnessing anything but a man's foolishness catching up to him at last. Based on Nick Veltri's return appearance on In the Flamingo Lounge with Rockabilly Greg (recorded June 23, 2026 and broadcast July 18, 2026). Nick Veltri: Serving the Song For more than fifty years, bass player Nick Veltri has stood as one of the most respected, disciplined groove-makers in Western New York. Inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame in 1994, Veltri's reputation isn't built on flash or grandstanding, but on a deep, unshakeable devotion to a single musical truth: the song is king. The Spark of the Groove Nick's obsession with the instrument started early. As a nine-year-old kid walking to sax lessons at Art Kubera's music store, his eyes would lock onto the shiny new Fender basses hanging on the wall. The definitive "aha" moment came at the Erie County Fair when he saw a local group called The El Tempos performing in their sharp red blazers. Hearing the way the bass drove the crowd to dance, Nick knew exactly where his future lay. He never picked up a standard guitar; he was meant to play the bass. While his father bought him an off-brand electric rig around 1963, Nick also pursued formal training on the upright bass under the legendary Ted Mayer of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Mayer's strict focus on bowing, precise finger position, and classical discipline laid a flawless technical foundation that Nick carried with him throughout his entire career. The Road, the Legends, and the "P-Bass" Tone Returning home from a military stint in the Marines (1969–1971), Nick jumped headfirst into the fertile Buffalo circuit. By 1973, he joined the nationally touring '50s showband Big Wheelie & the Hubcaps, kicking off an era of recording, traveling, and headlining major hometown venues like the historic Melody Fair. Over the decades, Nick became the go-to session and live player for the region's elite, backing keyboard icon Stan Szelest in Stan & the Ravens, anchoring Billy McEwen & the Soul Invaders, and performing with Barbara St. Clair & the Shadows. "I prefer a precision bass—the split pickup—and heavy-gauge flatwound strings. La Bella flatwounds... to me, that gets the sound that I have in my mind." — Nick Veltri Nick's signature tone relies heavily on a three-bass rotation of reissue Fenders: ·       A '58 Reissue Precision Bass: Beloved for its easy playability and classic, round sound. ·       A '54 Reissue Precision Bass: A primitive, punchy take on the earliest Fender designs. ·       A '62 Reissue Precision Bass: Bringing that classic '60s R&B soul warmth. His approach is strictly fingers—no picks—keeping him firmly locked into the pocket alongside legendary local drummers and horn sections. In the Studio and On Display Nick's musical fingerprint is etched onto nearly 100 recording projects—ranging from regional radio jingles (like "Milk for Health") to albums by Terry Buchwald, Doug Yeomans, Bob Faulk, and Pete Howard, as well as Lance Diamond's beloved Christmas record. He was also famous for a unique, heavily gigged 1959 Fender Precision bass featuring a rosewood fingerboard. Over decades of service, the instrument's failing finish became a canvas, completely covered in signatures of legendary musicians Nick crossed paths with. Featured in 20th Century Guitar magazine in the early 2000s, the historic bass was later displayed at the Buffalo Museum of Science and the Hard Rock Cafe before finding a home with a collector in the Netherlands. Keeping the Heritage Alive Beyond his legendary stage presence, Veltri has dedicated decades of his life to preservation. Following his 1994 Hall of Fame induction, he stepped into leadership roles, serving as the President of the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame starting in 2000, and helping organize historical exhibitions to honor the players who built the "Buffalo Sound." Whether he's co-writing tracks like "Put Out the Fire" on the Bandstand label, recording live original projects with writers like John Regis, or steering the rhythm section for his beloved bi-annual R&B Soul Revue alongside Sam Guarino, Nick Veltri remains the ultimate professional. To Nick, playing the bass has never been about self-promotion—it's about locking down the pocket and serving the music.

Over the past weeks, we've explored the six core human needs and the shadows they create when they unconsciously drive our lives and leadership.We began with the need for certainty, which often becomes the need for control. We explored the need for variety and how it can create instability. We looked at significance, our desire to be seen and recognized, and at love and connection, where over-giving and people-pleasing often emerge. Finally, we reflected on the need for growth and how the pursuit of constant evolution can become exhausting when it never allows space for integration.Today, I want to close this series with the sixth and final need:The need for contribution.In many ways, I see this as the most mature of the six human needs.But it is also the easiest one to confuse with the others.What Is the Need for Contribution?The need for contribution is the desire to create meaningful impact beyond yourself.It is the desire to give back.To leave something better than you found it.To use your skills, experience, and life for something larger than your own success.Many people describe contribution as the highest expression of purpose.Yet there is an important question we rarely ask ourselves:From which place are we contributing?Because contribution can easily become another disguise for an unmet human need.Are you contributing because you need recognition?Then perhaps significance is still driving your actions.Are you contributing because helping others allows you to belong?Perhaps the need for love and connection is underneath.Are you contributing because it helps you learn and evolve?Perhaps growth is still leading the way.Contribution itself is not enough.The intention behind it matters.When Giving Is Another Way of ReceivingOne of the biggest lessons I've learned is that many of us give because, unconsciously, we hope to receive something in return.Recognition.Validation.Love.Belonging.Security.There is nothing wrong with these needs, they are deeply human.The invitation is simply to become aware of them.Healthy contribution begins when the act of giving is complete in itself.When giving is already fulfilling.When nothing needs to come back for the contribution to have meaning.That, for me, is where contribution becomes truly free.The Shadow of ContributionLike every human need, contribution also has its shadow.One of the most common expressions I see—particularly in women leaders—is over-giving.Helping everyone.Always being available.Giving expertise away for free.Putting others first.Feeling guilty for receiving.The intention is beautiful.But over time, it becomes unsustainable.Because contribution without receiving eventually creates depletion.Everything in nature exists in relationship.Breathing in. Breathing out.Giving. Receiving.Neither can exist without the other.One question worth reflecting on is:How comfortable are you receiving?Can you receive money without guilt?Can you receive appreciation without minimizing it? Say ‘Thank you'.Can you receive support without feeling indebted?Many people who love to contribute discover that receiving is actually much harder than giving.And yet both are necessary.My Own ShiftWhen I look back on my own career, I can clearly see how this need evolved over time.For many years, I worked in the gaming industry.I loved the creativity.I loved the innovation.I loved building teams and creating products that reached millions of people.I also received a great deal in return.Meaningful work.Recognition.Financial security.Growth.But eventually, a deeper question emerged.What am I contributing to?The games we created generated engagement, screen time, and significant revenue.From a business perspective, they were successful.But I also knew who some of our players were.I knew stories of people spending thousands of euros in games.People whose behavior resembled addiction more than entertainment.And I had to ask myself:Is this the impact I want to have?That question changed everything.It wasn't a judgment of the industry.It was an honest reflection on my own values.I realized that my deepest need was no longer growth.Or recognition.Or achievement.It had become contribution.That realization eventually led me toward coaching.Toward conscious leadership.Toward creating spaces where leaders examine not only what they build, but the impact they create on the people around them.When Contribution Becomes a Different QuestionAt some point in life, many people reach a quiet transition.They've achieved.They've grown.They've accumulated experience.And the question changes.Instead of asking:“How can I become more successful?”They begin asking:“What do I want to leave behind?”Contribution is no longer about building something bigger.It becomes about building something meaningful.For me, that has become the work.Helping leaders move from fear to love.From leading through control, ego, and survival...To leading from awareness, integrity, and the heart.That doesn't happen through strategy alone.It requires inner work.Because the quality of what we contribute will always reflect the quality of the place we are contributing from.Looking Back at the Six Human NeedsAs we close this series, I invite you to reflect on all six human needs.* Where do you seek certainty and control?* Where do you constantly chase novelty?* Where do you need recognition?* Where do you sacrifice yourself to maintain connection?* Where do you push yourself to keep growing?* And finally…How do all of these needs shape the way you contribute to the world?Every need is valid.Every need has a shadow.The goal is never to eliminate these needs.The goal is to become aware of them.Because awareness is where freedom begins.Reflection QuestionsTake some time to journal with these questions:* Which of the six human needs drives most of your decisions today?* When you contribute, what are you hoping to receive in return?* How comfortable are you with receiving?* What impact are you truly creating through your work?* If recognition, money, and status disappeared, would you still choose the same path?Closing ReflectionFor me, contribution is not about saving the world.It is about bringing more consciousness into it.Helping people move from fear to love.From unconscious patterns to awareness.From reacting to choosing.If this series has taught us anything, it is that our shadows are not something to eliminate.They are invitations.Invitations to understand ourselves more deeply.Because once we understand what has been driving us, we finally become free to choose a different way of leading, living, and contributing.And perhaps that is the greatest contribution any of us can make.Thanks for reading Rise and Play!
