Hi, I'm Brian Whitehill. And this is Bolder Uphill. The show where we discuss the wins, the losses, the ups and the downs of paving your own path in a world that constantly encourages taking the safe route. I've always wondered why we frequently hear from the people at the top of their game about how they got there, but rarely do we hear from those still on their way up. Now we will. Here you'll find comedy in shared misery, discuss trending topics and chat with the risk takers, the people-in-progress, and the ones who reject the status quo. Consider this corner of the internet a place of solace for those taking the uphill path less traveled, as well as those gathering the courage to. I'm happy you're here! Stay bold & keep climbing.
In this week's episode of Bolder Uphill, we hit the one year anniversary of the launch of this podcast! I chat about "languishing" and what that means in our daily lives in this post-2020, almost(?) post-COVID world. Things are re-opening, life is slowly returning to "normal" - however so many of us are unmotivated and feel stuck. We chat about that. Also, I talk about my recent trip to NYC and the fun and frustrating things about the city right now. NEXT EPISODE (because so many of you have requested it and I will happily comply) - will be dedicated to my roommate horror stories from over the years.Link to the article referenced: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/19/well/mind/covid-mental-health-languishing.htmlTo keep up with me, follow me on Instagram:www.instagram.com/brianwhitehillwww.instagram.com/bolderuphill
In this week's episode of Bolder Uphill, I let you all in on the mental rut I've been in the last few months and why I took a break from new episodes. We chat about moving out of Los Angeles, the lengthy process of coming back and finding a new apartment during a pandemic, and other equally important ways my life has changed the last few months. This show is about discussing ups & downs, and it's finally time to share some of the valleys that inevitably follow the peaks. Thank you for listening & it's good to be back.To keep up with me, follow me on Instagram:www.instagram.com/brianwhitehillwww.instagram.com/bolderuphill
I had the opportunity to speak with Bethany McDonald, a British actor/singer/dancer, who has been making the most of her time in the U.K during the last difficult year. We chat about her training in one of the top musical theatre programs in the U.K., her time traveling and performing, as well as her upcoming projects (some of which might bring her to NYC). A wonderful human and a wonderful chat.To connect with Bethany on social media:@bethanymcdonaldactor"Bethany McDonald" on YouTubeTo keep up with me and/or catch clips and photos from the episodes:@bolderuphillpod@brianwhitehill
Welcome back to Bolder Uphill! After a 2 month hiatus due to temporarily moving out of LA and changing jobs, I'm back with André Revels. This episode was recorded a few days after the election results were announced in November so although we didn't plan for it - prepare for some political talk from two guys who mostly know what they're talking about. André is one of my best friends and we often have long-winded conversations about life and our different experiences as men in this country from different backgrounds and cultures, as well as simply humans on this earth. In this polarizing time it's always refreshing talking to someone who can see both sides of the important conversations happening around us. He consistently helps me ground myself, find a bit more perspective, and he reminds me not to sweat the small stuff. I love this guy and I know you will too. Enjoy!@andrerevelsTo keep up with me and/or catch clips and photos from the episodes:@bolderuphillpod@brianwhitehill
Had the opportunity to speak with Matthew Corozine, my previous acting coach and the owner of the NYC-based Meisner acting studio, Matthew Corozine Studio Theatre (@mcstheatre). Full circle moment for me, considering two years ago I sat on this stage a little lost and looking for a community. I found that and more at MCS. We chat about his journey as an acting coach over the last 20 years, as well as how he’s kept his studio and art alive with his students over the course of this difficult year. Very excited to share our conversation. Enjoy!https://www.matthewcorozinestudio.comTo keep up with me and/or catch clips and photos from the episodes:@bolderuphillpod@brianwhitehill
In this week's solo episode, I talk about my visit to NYC last month and what the city looks like right now, the state of VR headsets, the new Christopher Nolan film "Tenet", and the mindset changes I've been working on that have actually been really beneficial. We also talk about driving in Los Angeles and what it's like to dodge rocks, metal, and girls that throw their phones at your windshield at midnight on Sunset Blvd. We have a good time. In today's episode I chat with Rachel Josefina, a friend, previous classmate of mine, and an experienced performer who has created her own business "Mindset in the Making". She specializes in teaching her clients how to get out of their own way and create the life they want from the ground up. It all starts with how we talk to ourselves and the energy we put out into the world and show other people. I struggle with negative self talk and limiting beliefs, so this was a conversation worth having and definitely one worth listening to, regardless of your career path or industry. Thanks for being here, enjoy episode 14!Book mentioned in the show:"What to Say When You Talk to Your Self" by Shad HelmstetterTo connect with Rachel on social media:@rachel.josefinaTo keep up with me and/or catch clips and photos from the episodes:@bolderuphillpod@brianwhitehill
In today's episode I sit down with Will Greenberg, a cinematographer based in Los Angeles. Among many things we discuss his time in the Navy, his extensive cinematographer experience and training, as well as the Nicholas Sparks-style romantic story of how he met his wife. He's one of the first people I worked with after moving to LA and he's one of the raddest guys I know. I had a blast listening to him and I know you will too. In this week's solo episode, we get real, we have some fun, we decompress, we vent a little bit about the anxiety storm that hit me the other day, we briefly touch on the political division in our country and hope that people can start having conversations instead of screaming at each other, we hear about the girl in high school who laughed and shut the door in my face when I showed up to her party, and more. Enjoy! To keep up with me and/or catch clips and photos from the episodes:@bolderuphillpod@brianwhitehill
In today's episode I sit down with one of my best friends, Michael Dashefsky, to discuss his journey as a professional actor, musician, and performer over the last (almost) decade since I met him in college back in 2012. We discuss some college experiences, the changing entertainment landscape, and finding a balance between your work and your outside interests. He's got a ridiculous sense of humor and a ridiculous amount of talent, with plenty of travels and experiences to share. In this episode I chat with one of my best friends, Sarah Rae Jackson, as she transitions back to living in California after living in NYC for the last five years. She's got a substantial background in theatre, vocal training in opera, two degrees -one in Theatre, one in Child Development - and she's been writing a book for the last few years. We discuss how all of these parallel paths have led her to where she is now and what she's learned along the way. We also share our personal history as friends and our unexpected family connections. She's one of the most genuine and caring people I know, with the biggest heart and tallest body. Enjoy!@brianwhitehill@bolderuphillpod@sarahraejayAlso, sometimes she posts booty pics. Her words, not mine.
In this episode I chat with Don Castor - singer, musician, and jack-of-all-trades - about his training at Berklee School of Music in Boston, his path in the music industry, and the insight and inspiration he's gathered along the way. We also discuss his songwriting, his music projects and his motivations for his most recent album, "Broken". I had an absolute blast listening to Don and I know you will too. Be sure to check out his music on Spotify!@don.castorwww.doncastor.com@brianwhitehill@bolderuphillpod
In this episode, among many things I talk about the Fourth of July, some ridiculous city council meeting videos that have been circulating online, as well as the filmed stage production of the musical Hamilton hitting Disney+. As always, thanks for listening. Stay bold, keep climbing.@bolderuphillpod@brianwhitehill
In this episode I chat with Rachel Murray, an actor, writer, singer, and all-around bicoastal creative. She’s currently based in Los Angeles, but has lived and worked in LA and NYC. We discuss what's going on in the country and how all of the recent events and movements have affected her level of activism and awareness, as well as her fulfillment and creative pursuits. We also dive into her new short film "Closet Share" and what her college acting training experience was like. In an industry where self promotion is key, we talk about the importance of focusing on others, especially now. Enjoy!@rachmur@brianwhitehill@bolderuphillpod
In this episode, I talk about what's been going through my brain for the last few days. The countless allegations and stories circling the LA comedy scene have been troubling, to say the least, and while they're still developing I discuss my thoughts on the situation. I talk about the lessons I've learned not just from that, but also from 2020 as a whole (so far). Also, I turned 27 this past weekend and I give an abridged history of some birthday lessons of the last few years. As always, thanks for listening. Stay bold, keep climbing.@bolderuphillpod@brianwhitehill
In this episode I chat with two of my best friends, André Revels and Cliff Sellers, who are both professional actors living in NYC. The plan was to talk about their experiences in the entertainment industry, on cruise ships, national tours, in NYC, etc, however the events of the last few weeks shifted that plan, as Cliff attended the protests in DC and has some stories to tell - not to mention the BLM movement is one that these two live and fight every day. They both have given me perspective and patience as long as I’ve known them, and this conversation is no different. Enjoy!@bolderuphillpod@brianwhitehill@andrerevels@cliffsellers
In this episode we discuss the different types of envy and the ones I've struggled with. Apparently there are two types of envy; benign and malicious. What's the difference? Listen to find out. I also talk about catching a break from my landlord and most importantly, the Snyder Cut being announced. Follow on social media to keep up with me and the show.@bolderuphillpod@brianwhitehill
In this episode I chat with the very first guest of the show, one of my close friends, LA-based writer/director Jared Deiro. We talk about his inspirations as a director, how he got started, and how he's navigating the "new normal" of the film industry. We also discuss his highly anticipated upcoming short film "Andromeda" and how the cast and crew are overcoming obstacles of the current shifting landscape. One of the true bold ones, Jared Deiro keeps climbing.@bolderuphillpod@brianwhitehill@deirowho@andromedashortfilmhttps://vimeo.com/jareddeiro
In this episode we discuss the setbacks that came after episode 1 launched, as well as where I'm at in my artistic journey. I've gotten a lot of positive feedback from everyone who has tuned in so far, so I want to give you all a big thanks and a big shout-out. I appreciate all the kind words. I'm excited for our upcoming guests and to see where this thing goes. Stay bold, keep climbing. (And keep listening.)@bolderuphillpod@brianwhitehill
In this introduction episode, we meet for the first time and talk about what this podcast is all about!
