Danielle Kingdon, employment partner at Osborne Clarke, speaks to Alex Simpson and Rachel Murray of Berkshire Women's Aid Osborne Clarke has recently partnered with Berkshire Women's Aid, a charity which provides confidential support, information, outreach services and refuge accommodation for women and their children who are affected by domestic abuse and violence, to create a podcast which discusses domestic abuse and what caring and supportive employers can do to support suspected victims of such abuse within their workplace. This is particularly relevant since some individual MPs have recently tabled amendments to the Employment Rights Bill proposing the introduction of 10 working days' leave for victims of domestic abuse and protection against suffering a detriment or dismissal where an individual is or is suspected to be a person affected by domestic abuse. It is also being proposed that employers are placed under a duty to take all reasonable steps to prevent domestic abuse and to develop and publish a policy to support workers who are victims of such abuse. As a firm, Osborne Clarke supports BWA. We are also looking to implement appropriate policies to support victims of domestic abuse within the firm.

Today's episode, we have Rachel Murray from UK who is a Freelance Refinisher & the Owner of "Paint by Rach".Rachel is a successful and passionate young woman in the Automotive Collision Repair Industry all because she crashed her dad's car when she was 17 -- three and a half weeks after Rachel passed her driving test, Rachel crashed her car. Something that at 17 years old Rachel thought “her life is over” since it was her dad's car. Initially Rachel was planning on going down the route of becoming a Motorsport Mechanic, but Rachel was finding it rather difficult to gain experience and get her foot in the door - She took the opportunity to ask Killaughey Road Commercial Repairs (who took the car in to be repaired) if Rachel could brush the floor to get some workshop experience. On her first day Rachel was given a suction fed spray gun and shown how to paint on a set of Massey Ferguson wheels. Rachel had a newfound love of painting, she quit her ideas of working as a Motorsport Mechanic, enrolled in Riverpark Training and gained a vital placement in Charles Hurst Accident Repair Centre. Rachel worked hard and completed both her level 2 and 3 qualifications in vehicle refinishing. In 2019, Rachel took a leap of faith and went self-employed and have since gained quality contracts with Elite Refinish, Suitor Autofix and CRASH Services. In 2021, Rachel became an Ambassador for School of Thought (Automotive). Along the way Rachel been presented with various awards such as Bodyshop Magazine Paint Technician of the year 2021, Bodyshop Magazine 30 under 30: Rising Stars in 2020, Thatcham Paint Apprentice of the year Finalist in 2017, 2nd and 3rd Northern Ireland Paint Apprentice in 2017 and 2018. Neonatal nurse practitioner Rachel Murray joins your host Beth Quaas to talk about her shift from nursing to also start working as a professional development trainer. She studied at Dale Carnegie Training, which gave her a unique perspective on how to train others. The program fanned her passion to educate people. She and Beth discuss her training methods she's learned and how these training methods could (and should!) be used in training nurses as well as administrators. ABOUT RACHAELRachael has been a Registered Nurse since 2004 and, subsequently, a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner since 2011. Looking for more support in having uncomfortable conversations? Join us for our upcoming program on Leading DEI Conversations!Welcome to She+ Geeks Out, the podcast bringing you the voices of women+ from all walks of life to share with you what they geek out about-- their passions, talents, struggles, and successes. In each episode, hosts Rachel Murray and Felicia Jadczak will feature different guests and discussions about topics including health, psychology, art, music, learning, and more. Episodes are fun, engaging, and provide some nuggets of information that you can take away. Oh, and yeah, they might be awkward sometimes. That's just how we roll. This season of She+ Geeks Out is unlike any other so far. Together, we will be unpacking what the future of work looks like for different groups of people in terms of diversity, equity and inclusion. In addition to our special guests, listeners will also get to hear snippets from our facilitation team on what DEI really looks like in the workplace from a practical, actionable standpoint.Last week we talked about what it looks like to build a DEI program in an organization, and this week we'll look at what it looks like when these initiatives are up and running. The truth is, in many cases, it's going to mean more open dialogue and the potential for having uncomfortable conversations. To begin, DEI and Leadership Consultant and Coach Dr. Erika Powell talks about performative DEI. When someone is accused of this, it usually means that they are not engaging with psychological safety. Often, it is the silence of those of uncommon identities that we should be paying attention to. Somatics starts to help people to have difficult conversations. Dr. Victoria Verlezza, DEI Facilitator at SGO, joins to tell us more. Difficult conversations, she believes, stem from 2 places: wanting to have them but not knowing how, or being fearful of having them. However, it is important to think about identity and realizing that is more than being offensive, but being harmful. Research suggests that people don't feel confident having harder conversations at work in an open setting.Next, we talk to Becca Shanksy, Associate Professor of Psychology at Northeastern University, about the conversations she is having to move beyond biases in academia. Translation neuroscience, she explains, is really about understanding what the brain is capable of translated to people of any gender or sex. Anna Whitlock, Director of People Strategy & Culture at LabCentral, joins to discuss the lack of awareness across the board that, for most, DEI practices are a learning experience. We are all just trying to do the right thing while accommodating everybody's life experiences, but we aren't always going to get it perfectly right. This work is a daily struggle and she hopes other people find comfort in her vulnerability. We hear again from Dr. Victoria Verlezza on the key of talking across differences. We all have either dominant or oppressed identity that inevitably plays out in the workplace. When thinking of how to be inclusive leaders, it comes down to how we show up in these types of conversations. So much of professional life has been traditionally set up for people to put aside what makes them unique, but we need to feel comfortable embracing our identities and acknowledging the injustices which exist in our world. Then, she shares her usual reaction items when witnessing someone in the workplace express bias, unconscious or not. Next, SGO facilitator Fatima Dainkeh shares what it means to be an ally. Language supports us in our actions and behaviors and helps us in our mindset. However, it is possible to co-opt certain terminology based on how we perceive them. For her, the term ally means practicing something in your day to day life to support someone else who may not have the same social power you do. She explains the difference in calling in vs. calling out when giving feedback to colleagues who might say something inappropriate. When it comes to topics related to DEI, it is very important to know how to give effective feedback. She also notes that we should consider our relationship to a person before giving feedback to them. Part of doing this work is giving grace to everybody. We also talked to Melanie Ho, author of Beyond Leaning In and Naomi Seddon, author of Milk and Margaritas, about the conversations they're taking part in. Weaponizing competence is a popular topic that has just recently gotten traction in the last year. For Melanie, she is noticing much more of a shift towards having these difficult discussions with others rather than brushing things under the rug. Naomi adds that this is not just an issue relevant to the workplace, but something we need to be practicing within our homes as well. Conversations without male family members should be taking place about how to better support the women in their lives and workplaces. DEI Facilitator Kia Rivera believes that these conversations can't be had without acknowledging power, privilege and marginalization. Thanks so much for listening. Welcome to She+ Geeks Out, the podcast bringing you the voices of women+ from all walks of life to share with you what they geek out about-- their passions, talents, struggles, and successes. In addition to our special guests, listeners will also get to hear snippets from our facilitation team on what DEI really looks like in the workplace from a practical, actionable standpoint. When organizations are building out their initiatives around DE&I, the biggest mistake is when companies view it as a check the box approach. DEI work is deep, lifelong work which is most impactful when it is built into every aspect of an organization as early as possible. This week, we'll take notes from leaders who have successfully brought intentional and fully integrated DEI programs into their organizations. We begin by talking to CA Webb, Former President of Kendall Square Association, about how she worked with She+ Geeks Out to build the organizations' new DEI program which ended up becoming Diversity Drives Inclusion. They began with a learning journey, out of which came the realization that there was a huge need for a different approach to DEI education in companies. She also shares her observation that while many people now claim to be anti-racist, they don't actually know how to put it in practice. Next, we hear from Fatima Dainkeh, SGO staff DEI programs and training manager, about doing the work. When facilitating workshops, Fatima always repeatedly reminds participants that the work is not the workshop. While having a workshop can be great for organizations to plant the seed of DEI, it is important that the workshop is part of a bigger plan to pursue DEI goals. Afterwards, Jason Fook, Senior Director of Learning and Development at Essex Property & Trust, talks about taking a DEI leadership committee to the next level. He shares that Essex had actually been thinking about launching their own DEI committee before the pandemic. Now, they are at the point of questioning how they can make the initiative even bigger and take it to the next level. Though Jason was nervous that nobody would come, their classes have actually begun to sell out.To further discuss the role of formal training and workshops is Dr. Erika Powell, a DEI and Leadership Consultant and Coach. When facilitating a class or an experience, she says that each one is a flight because participants go higher and wider in their consciousness. She also shares about her shifting views of unconscious bias in the workplace. We also hear from Amaia Arruabarrena, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at ezCater, about the need for organizations to define what DEI means to them. It is important to hold each of the 3 pillars of DEI to the same importance to be successful at making people feel welcome and included. After defining what DEI meant to them, the team then worked out a dedicated budget for the efforts. Every organization will face their own unique challenges based on size, age, location, budget, and resources. Elisa Campos-Prato, Sr. Recruiter at Scott's Cheap Flights, elaborates on approaching efforts creatively. She also touches on the fact that money is not a necessity, but rather a pathway for DEI. Anna Whitlock, Director of People, Strategy, and Culture at LabCentral, shares about the company's various DEI initiatives. Biotech is not traditionally a space where most people of color feel welcomed to, but LabCentral is doing everything they can to change that. Elba Lizardi, site director at BASF, shares how she initially got involved in the DEI space via a DEI task force. Prior to being nominated, Elba isn't sure she was really being loud enough about DEI issues. Before reaching out to customers and suppliers, the organization funded an employee research group. Then, Naomi Seddon talks about a few of the initiatives at Megaport where she sits on the board. Their focus was to hear about diverse employee experiences and figure out a way to be accommodating for everybody. Finally, CA Webb returns to unpack the idea that you can't drive change alone. Thanks so much for listening. Together, we will be unpacking what the future of work looks like for different groups of people in terms of diversity, equity and inclusion. In addition to our special guests, listeners will also get to hear snippets from our facilitation team on what DEI really looks like in the workplace from a practical, actionable standpoint. When we think about work and the current hustle culture climate, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Today, we spoke with some of our favorite experts, leaders and facilitators about workplace trauma, psychological safety, somatics and emotional intelligence. To begin, we hear from Belma McCaffrey, Founder and CEO of Workbigger, about what it looks like to work from a healthy place. She shares that finding our sense of purpose within ourselves is key to feeling clarity and satisfaction in our jobs. Additionally, we should recognize that we have the power to decide what work should fulfill for ourselves rather than letting society make the decision for us. She also breaks down the concept of the 3 selves: the healthy, wounded and survivor self. SGO's Fatima Dainkeh defines somatics as a technique, theory, movement or method which helps us think about our body and the things we may be processing internally but are unaware of. The idea that things like trauma, joy and pain live within our bodies is traditional among ancient cultures. Then, SGO's Rachel Sadler defines psychological safety as the belief that you will not be punished for speaking up. It is an important component of employee satisfaction and retention, and can help ensure that people are willing to take the intellectual steps necessary for innovation. We live in a fear-based society to the point that a resting state feels unnatural for many people. Dr. Huong Diep elaborates on the concept of intergenerational trauma and offers advice for how we can show up to work in a supportive and authentic way. Next, we hear from Dr. Becca Shanksy, Associate Professor of Psychology at Northeastern University, about the research her team is working on at the university's Laboratory of Neuroanatomy and Behavior. The research focuses on what happens to the brain when a person experiences a traumatic event. They are also aiming to understand the neural circuits that cause darting to happen in certain subsects of female animals. Then, Karina Becerra, Director of Customer Advocacy at Podium, shares about modeling healthy team boundaries and supporting individuals with different backgrounds from her own. She finds that when people are happy and maintain work and life balance, it shows in the work that they do. We also hear from Melanie Ho, author of Beyond Leaning In, on the common psychological and emotional abuse which frequently occurs in the workplace. This is also what has driven much of the great resignation. As we see more young people entering the workforce, we need to be sure that we do not continue to perpetuate these behaviors. If there are no people in power who will hear these concerns and respond with empathy, then an organization will never really make progress in this area. Naomi Seddon joins to share about work life boundaries for women and how she began to implement them for herself. She acknowledges that we all do hold certain biases whether we realize it or not. The first step is to recognize these biases, and then start to work on implementing change on how we perceive others. Dr. Victoria Verlezza, DEI Facilitator at SGO, speaks about how we can show up to support a healthy work environment. When we're supporting a healthy work environment, we want to consider how the systems (ableism, sexism, racism, etc) are playing into our daily interactions and how we think of productivity. As leaders, we need to embrace flexibility and model that same behavior ourselves to show the people we're supervising that it's okay to take time off. In closing, we hear from Elisa Campos-Pratorof Scott's Cheap Flights about addressing psychological safety during the onboarding process of hiring. It is top of mind for everything to be documented and communication to happen asynchronously. It is a major priority of hers to allow new employees to showcase their own style of working rather than giving them specific guidelines to adhere to. Thanks so much for listening. Like many aspects of nutrition, sugar addiction is no stranger to controversy. Some feel that everyone is addicted to sugar and there's no way to enjoy sugar in moderation. Others have a more nuanced perspective. To break it all down, I've brought on someone who is well-versed in this topic who will help you figure out if sugar is negatively impacting you. About Rachel Murray Rhn Rachel Murray owns and runs her Holistic Nutrition business out of Elora, ON. Her passion for health and wellness was established while earning her Bachelor of Science specializing in Health Promotion at Laurentian University. After this, she went on to complete a bachelor's degree in Nursing and worked in the hospital setting for eight years. During this time, Rachel struggled with allergies and digestive issues. A few years later, thyroid and fertility issues also surfaced. After conventional treatments only masked symptoms and did not address the root cause of the problem, she was determined to find a natural solution. It was these struggles and experiences that initiated her discovery and pursuit of a holistic nutrition career, which she has found better serves her passion for educating and helping people live their best life. Rachel takes the whole person into account when she completes her assessments and is, therefore, able to create an individualized wellness plan to meet her clients where they are at, and she is committed to their success. Her specialty is working with people with sugar/carb addiction, which she came upon rather serendipitously, but has truly found her passion for working with this incredible population. What Sugar Addiction Really Is We may imagine a sugar addiction as eating a plate of cupcakes in one sitting, but Rachel explains how it can also exist within what appears to be an otherwise healthy diet. People of any body size can have it and anyone can experience the blood sugar issues that come with a high-sugar diet. This affects our mental and emotional states as well as physical health. It can be hard to understand if sugar addiction is affecting you. Rachel asks some questions from her quiz to get you thinking if this is something to consider. This includes determining if you eat more sweets than you intend to, thinking about if you've neglected your responsibilities as a result, and if you've used sweets to relieve discomfort. Recovery from Sugar Addiction is Possible There is hope for the sugar addict. Rachel has seen how personal discovery and a dedication to self-improvement go a long way to getting it under control. More simply, just avoiding sweets is key. Rachel explains how, when you remove sugar from your life, you'll start to see the world a little more clearly. Since not everyone's triggers are the same, this will look different for different people. The important point to remember is that, with the right guidance, anyone can recover from their sugar addiction. Have you noticed sugar cravings affecting what you eat? Leave a comment on the episode page! In This Episode How Rachel found her passion helping people with sugar addictions [6:15] Why you can have a healthy diet and still be addicted to sugar [8:55] What sugar addiction actually is and how it affects the body [11:05] Signs that you may have a sugar addiction [17:55] How and why to avoid sweets in order to beat your addiction [28:40] Reasons why sugar addiction is an actual issue [33:05] First steps to take to recover from a sugar addiction [37:45] Quotes “People who are underweight, normal weight, and overweight can all be addicted to sugar. It doesn't discriminate your body size.” [9:56] “Once you're sugar-addicted there's no going back. You have it and you can put it into remission, but you're always going to be addicted.” [22:00] “If you do think that you're sugar-addicted, please know that this is not something that you caused, that you don't need to feel guilty or shameful about it, that there is hope out there.” [43:03] Review Fed and Fearless on Apple Podcasts! In the past year, lots of creatives have seen their work dry up, due to the coronavirus pandemic. So much so, that research by IPSE found that 1 in 3 freelancers struggled to pay their tax return in January, and over a quarter said that the tax bill had a “strong negative impact” on their finances. It’s more important than ever that we talk about the mental health implications of the pandemic. In this episode, we have two guests, Sarah McCaffery and Rachel Murray. Sarah is from Solas Mind, a mental health support service for freelancers who work in the creative sectors. Rachel is a writer, editor, and founder of Pivot: a newsletter that helps people pivot in a new job, career path or industry. In this episode we hear from my sweet friend, Rachel Murray. Rachel is a Youth Pastor's Wife at Oasis Baptist Church and a Professional Photographer in Las Vegas . She is wife to Dan and they have two beautiful daughters and another child on the way. I have watched God grow her over the years as she decided to get out of her comfort zone and say yes to God. She shares how God has given incredible opportunities that have stretched her faith and have encouraged her walk with the Lord. One of my favorite quotes from her on this episode is, "When you say no to God, you put a limit on God and what He can do through you." I know you will be so encouraged. Thank you for listening and I hope that you will share this episode with someone who needs to be encouraged to, "say yes" to God!

A conversation with a recent graduate Rachel Murray. Host: Ashford Summerville Speaker/guest: Rachel Murray a Howard University Grad.
Rachel and I met at the National Society of American Foresters Conference in Louisville, Kentucky in November of 2019 at the student mentor session put on by my mentee the National Student Chair of SAF, Brittany Church. Rachel was enthusiastic about soils and urban forestry. I studied some of that in my college, but was curious what her take was on studying it now. She said soils is a hard class, but it is the foundation of forests. Without soil, we would not exist. We discussed her personally in the beginning of the interview and she has already been on track with internships and volunteer positions that have helped her achieve many opportunities such as scholarships. We openly discuss something that is just now coming out and a much needed conversation around disabilities while in college and while being in the forest sector. If I could relate to her in this conversation, I am sure many of you will as well, listen in! Rachel Murray is currently a senior Urban Forestry at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas and will be graduating in May 2020. She will be attending the graduate program at SFA to obtain a master's in environmental science. Her goal is to work one day at an urban forestry company or environmental consulting firm studying urban soils. She is passionate about sharing her story of having dyslexia and anxiety and completing a degree in forestry. She wants to be an advocate for people with disabilities in the forestry industry. Her hobbies include exploring the outdoors, reading books, and playing board games with her friends. Rachel can be reached at her email: jwtrrachel@gmail.com Want to be featured? Episode 019 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast* welcomes our good friend LUKE QUARANTA to the show for another long and winding discussion, the last interview I conducted over two weeks in NOLA during Jazz Fest 50. I first encountered Luke and his band TOUBAB KREWE at Bear Creek Music and Arts Festival, at Spirit of Suwannee Music Park, around 2008 or 2009. Ever since, I've been a big fan of his percussion magic, and of course the amazing Toubab Krewe, who released their latest LP Stylo in 2018. Toubab Krewe is always very active over Jazz Fest, and the members play in a lot of other bands as well, not the least of which is Luke himself. Nonetheless we were able to track him down at the end of our stay in NOLA, and he more than delivered with a fascinating interview that was at once informative and entertaining. LUKE QUARANTA Intro>Interview at 11 Mins Quaranta takes us on a lengthy journey of his inspiring career as a drummer, starting with his humble beginnings growing up in New Rochelle, NY and spending some time in the Bronx as a young adult. He discusses formative influences on him as a youth, and how he developed an interest in the different drums he employs when creating with Toubab Krewe. Originally and primarily based in Asheville, NC, Toubab Krewe members came together in organic fashion, shared a passion for West African instrumentation and it's music, and a strong curiosity to make it something new and evolved of it, yet still in tribute to the traditions. Over time, Luke began working with Djembe, Congas, Dundun, Sangban, and KenKeni drums, and he explains how he came in contact with these instruments and where he picked up knowledge and understanding of these ancient drums along the way. From there, Quaranta describes the context of these instruments, music from Mali, Guinea, and the Ivory Coast, and how he/his bandmates internalized it, and then repurposed it as their own creation, with permission and a blessing. Quaranta discusses mentors and friends from his travels in West Africa. I asked him how he was able to get together and study at length with master drummers in Africa and in the US, to such depth and understanding. He describes several trips to Africa to live with and make music among the people in Mali, Guinea and Ivory Coast. Quaranta explains how they received blessings from the master teachers to take this music to the West; they were invited to live with them and their families, spending a month a time, on more than one occasion, to get a proper orientation from the musicians who know it best. We talk a bit about Toubab Krewe in the early days, and Luke appears to have a fond time reminiscing on the start of this band and it's journey in the early 00's, he takes great detail in the narrative of how the music was instilled in them in Africa, how they hosted master drummers here in the States and traveled extensively with them and traditional dance groups too, and how it all tied together with the embryonic phase of Toubab Krewe. Luke explains how Toubab carries echoes of African greats like Ali Farka Toure, Orchestra Baobab and Salif Keita, but are ambassadors of the music into the future, they are not bound by the same traditions, and the Krewe was encouraged to play this music from their own hearts. From there, Quaranta explains the etymology of the name "Toubab Krewe", how it pertains to non-Africans AND is a nod to the heartbeat of jazz music, New Orleans, where our conversation was taking place. Which brings us to the discussion around current Toubab Krewe drummer Terrence Houston, who's been George Porter Jr's drummer for several years and is very admired in the local community and around the US. Quaranta explains how Houston came into the Toubab picture, and how his inclusion has informed the sound of the band in their modern era, most specifically with regard to the material found on STYLO. We finish up the conversation on Toubab with discussing their newest LP STYLO, including the writing and recording processes for both studio and live efforts past and present. After a lengthy powwow on all things Toubab, we take some time to talk about the incredible Weedie Braimah, who appeared on Episode 004 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast*, a master djembefola whom Luke has studied with, collaborated with, and befriended for many years. They both live and work in New Orleans, and the two have united for some amazing musical endeavors, not the least of which is Weedie Braimah & the Hands of Time. Quaranta takes a few minutes to flesh out the concept for this group and explain the nature of their music in a language everybody can easily understand. This is a powerful collection of world music masters and it was quite informative to hear about what goes into making the Hands of Time happen. A little bit about Jazz Fest, and the myriad of side bands that come to life in NOLA that Weedie, Luke, and collaborators include Raja Kassis (Antibalas), and Terence Higgins (Mad Skillet, Ani DiFranco). We touch on Luke's role in some of those bands, such as Pirate's Choice, Wahala Boys, FuFu All-Stars, and MEGAWATT, a project spearheaded by Kassis that include's musicians from outside of NOLA, such as Lettuce's Adam Deitch, Break Science's Borahm Lee, among others. Blake Quick/Rachel Murray (THE QUICKENING) Interview at 1hr 11mins After Luke's chat, we pivot to a NOLA-based buzz-band I'm very fond of, The Quickening, with a sweet 22-minute interview with founder/guitarist/vocalist Blake Quick and vocalist Rachel Murray. Their 2018 LP Begin Again made Upful LIFE's Favorite 18 Albums of 2018, and we've had our eyes and ears on The Quickening for a couple years now. Enjoy a peak behind the scenes of a Crescent City band cutting their teeth in that great environment, and some perspective on the hard work and grueling efforts it takes to make or break a band in this crowded, vibrant, and often cut-throat music scene. Both Quick and Murray also shout out some of their favorite underground NOLA musicians. Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week Garage-a-Trois debut EP, vinyl only, "Mysteryfunk". Fog City Records, 1999. I just let the whole 24mins EP ride out. 3 full songs and a minute-long outro. This features the original lineup of Stanton Moore, Charlie Hunter, and Skerik, Produced by Dan Prothero. You may think you know these guys as players, or even GAT, but you likely haven't heard them quite like this. Almost an electronic album, Moore unfurling boukou trip-hop breakbeats and drum & bass jungle riddims, underneath the kaleidoscopic eccentricities of Hunter and Skerik in full bloom. The Upful LIFE Podcast is available on iTunes! Theme Song: Mazel Tov by CALVIN VALENTINE
