By Any Other Name (Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS), S2 E22) was recommended by Toledo (toe-LEE-dough), he/him, who said: I first encountered this episode, as I did many TOS episodes, in elementary school while I read collections of James Blish's novelizations from the 70s. Even in text, there were elements I found to be genuinely horrifying: super-powerful aliens that apparently are normally giant, tentacled Lovecraftian creatures; they're coming to conquer the galaxy; machines give them the power to immobilize people and to transform them into helpless, easily- and callously-destroyed polyhedra. It give us a rare example of intergalactic travel in Star Trek: the Kelvans are from Andromeda, arrived in a generation ship, and wish to return. It offers a very clever narrative use of aliens looking exactly human: it's a necessary shapeshifting adaptation for the Kelvans to use the Enterprise, but it's also the key to their demise.I think this episode offers some early vocal callbacks to previous episodes, demonstrating how TOS sometimes handled continuity -- and foreshadowing later Trek. Examples include callouts to "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (galactic barrier) and "A Taste of Armageddon" _Vulcan mind tricks).Tons of genuine silliness: the Kelvans' reactions to humans, Scotty's iconic "it is green."By Any Other Name first aired on February 9, 1968, written by story by Jerome Bixby, teleplay by D. C. Fontana and Jerome Bixby, and directed by Marc DanielsTelepathic aliens take control of Kirk and Spock's bodies with the intention to build new, mechanized bodies for themselves. After receiving a distress signal from a planet deep in the galaxy and far from the last charted area, the Enterprise is contacted by a life form of pure energy that wishes Kirk, Spock, Dr. Mulhall and Bones to beam down. They meet Sargon, a conscious mind trapped in a machine. Sargon explains that their civilization travelled space just like Kirk centuries ago and left people in various star systems to colonize. But this planet suffered a war where all but a few people destroyed themselves. Sargon, his wife and another remain alive like this and wish to take control of Kirk, Spock and Dr. Mulhall's bodies to make android bodies for themselves. The Enterprise accepts their offer after deliberation and Sargon begins work. To allow the body to sustain this transformation, Henock, the third alien, makes a potion to help but has other plans. Sargon devizes a plan to destroy him, apologizes to the Enterprise and accepts their fate thereby ceasing to exist.[2]The Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook

The Elephant in the Universe: 100-year search for dark matter Author: Govert Schilling Theoretical Stability and Observational Proof of Dark Matter Halos Headline: Galaxies Need Invisible Halos: Ostriker and Rubin Provide Evidence In the late 1960s, theorist Jeremiah Ostriker calculated that a flattened galaxy like the Milky Way could not remain stable without a large, spherical "halo" of unseen matter surrounding it, providing a theoretical basis for dark matter. This theoretical need was then powerfully confirmed by the observational work of American astronomer Vera Rubin and her colleague Kent Ford throughout the 1970s. Studying distant galaxies, including Andromeda, they discovered that stars on the outer edges rotated at unexpectedly high, constant velocities, rather than slowing down as predicted. This "flattening the curve" of rotational velocities offered the first concrete proof for the existence of dark matter, whose gravity was necessary to prevent galaxies from flying apart. 1958

The first, asteroid 2025 PF2, zipped past at an altitude of just 22,000 kilometers, while the second, 2025 PU1, came even closer at 29,000 kilometers. Both asteroids, small yet significant, highlight the ongoing risks posed by near-Earth objects, with 2025 PU1 being particularly alarming as it was only detected hours after its closest approach.A New Moon for UranusAstronomers have identified a new moon orbiting Uranus, bringing the total number of known satellites to 26. Detected using NASA's Webb Space Telescope, this moon, estimated to be about 10 kilometers in diameter, eluded previous observations, including those from the Voyager 2 mission. Its discovery adds to the complexity of Uranus's moon system and raises questions about the chaotic history of its rings and satellites.Dancing Dwarf Galaxies and the Milky Way's FateA new study suggests that the fate of our Milky Way galaxy is intricately tied to the gravitational interactions with smaller dwarf galaxies as it approaches a merger with the Andromeda galaxy. By studying similar galactic systems, researchers aim to predict how these cosmic dances will influence the evolution of our galaxy over the next few billion years, providing insights into dark matter and cosmic structure.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Societyhttps://academic.oup.com/mnrasNASA's Webb Space Telescopehttps://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/webb/main/index.htmlBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-space-astronomy--2458531/support.

Someone said something very telling the other day. In a court of law, the criminal knows he's the one, the accuser knows the criminal is the one. So in the scheme of things, it's actually only the judge who is being judged. I was reminded of this when I realized that our relationships are intrinsically not of the other, but about us - the person in front of us is a mirror in which we can see ourselves. A friend, spouse, lover, stranger, colleague - they will always be who they are. We can come to them as wrecking balls or have the sensitivity to see them as messengers who help us know ourselves, just by being who they are. It's then very simple to realize that our impatience for people to change is merely our message to ourselves to reexamine who we are. The paradox is that once we change, people around us do too. They need to have the confidence of our intent, that what they see as the realized us is an inside-out phenomenon, and not cosmetic change. Of course, there are the outlier cases, of the obstinate or the evil, of the irreparably hurt or the irredeemably wounded. Often these are the relationships we need to step away (run away?) from. When you can't change the world, change worlds. Spekulací přibývalo, naopak oficiální vyšetřování stagnovalo a státy mlčely. Epizoda o síle novinářské spolupráce, odvaze klást nepohodlné otázky – a o moři, kde některé lodě raději nezapínají navigaci.Protagonista je podcast s Pavlou Holcovou. If you're spending across Meta, Google, Amazon, and Shopify—but still unclear which channel is actually closing the sale—this episode is your roadmap to marketing clarity. Ralph Burns and John Moran break down a real Tier 11 case study that exposes how most businesses are flying blind when it comes to attribution. You'll discover why traditional ROAS can lead you astray, how NAC and MER reveal true performance, and why “contribution” trumps “attribution” when it comes to scaling profitably. They also dive into how tools like CAPI Import and the Tier 11 Data Suite connect the dots across paid and organic touchpoints, helping brands unlock hidden revenue and cut wasted spend. The Andromeda galaxy lies just beyond (...OK, about 2.5 million light-years beyond) our galaxy, the Milky Way. For the past hundred years or so, scientists thought these galaxies existed in a long-term dance of doom — destined to crash into one another and combine into one big galactic soup. But today on the show, Regina and computational astrophysicist Arpit Arora explain why a recent paper out in the journal Nature Astronomy suggests this cosmic game of bumper cars may never come to a head at all. Ralph and John return to the "performance kitchen" to unpack a radical shift in digital advertising strategy. Discover why ungated webinar content, pre-click education, and native storytelling inside ad sets are outperforming traditional funnel tactics. John breaks down how a $120 glove brand scaled with a sub-$20 CPA—without touching the campaign for over a month—and why Meta's Andromeda update is forcing advertisers to master content, not just structure. If you're still gating your best material, you're already behind. This is the future of Meta ads—and it starts with feeding the feed, not the funnel.Chapters:00:00:00 - Inside the Perpetual Traffic Machine00:00:09 - What's Cooking in the Ad Lab Today00:00:38 - Why One Ad Style Won't Cut It00:01:26 - Meta's AI Is Now Selling for You00:02:28 - Your New Ad Grid Game Plan00:04:37 - Welcome to the Performance Kitchen00:06:09 - Andromeda Changed Everything—Here's How00:10:21 - This Glove Ad Crushed It00:17:34 - Pre-Click Education = More Conversions00:19:51 - Turn Old Content into Ad Gold00:21:16 - Gated Content Is Killing Your Ads00:23:34 - Ads That Educate, Ads That Convert00:29:53 - Do Media Buyers Still Matter?00:32:58 - Scale Smart: One Campaign, No Tweaks00:39:33 - What's Next in the Ad Evolution?LINKS AND RESOURCES:Tier 11 JobsPerpetual Traffic on YouTubeTiereleven.comMongoose MediaPerpetual Traffic SurveyPerpetual Traffic WebsiteFollow Perpetual Traffic on TwitterConnect with Lauren on Instagram and Connect with Ralph on LinkedInThanks so much for joining us this week. Australia is known for its unusual animal life, from koalas to kangaroos. But once upon a time, the Australian landscape had even weirder fauna, like Palorchestes azael, a marsupial with immense claws and a small trunk. There was Protemnodon mamkurra, a massive, slow-moving, kangaroo-like creature. And Zygomaturus trilobus, a wombat the size of a hippo. They're all extinct now, and researchers are trying to figure out why. Host Flora Lichtman talks with researcher Carli Peters about ZooMS, a technique that allows researchers to use collagen from ancient bone fragments to identify species, offering clues to those ancient extinction events. Peters recently described using the technique in the journal Frontiers in Mammal Science. And, a recent study in the journal Nature Astronomy hints that our own Milky Way galaxy may not be doomed to collide with Andromeda after all. Till Sawala, an astrophysicist at the University of Helsinki, joins Flora to talk about the finding.Guests: Dr. Carli Peters is a postdoctoral researcher at the Interdisciplinary Center for Archaeology and the Evolution of Human Behavior at the University of Algarve in Faro, Portugal.Dr. Till Sawala is an astrophysicist at the University of Helsinki.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. By placing moths in a flight-simulator that also acted as a planetarium, the team behind the work showed that moths could use the bright Milky Way to help them fly in the correct direction.Research article: Dreyer et al.10:17 Research HighlightsNigeria's pangolins are under threat because their meat is delicious, and how the gravitational pull of other galaxies may prevent the Milky Way colliding with Andromeda.Research Highlight: Why pangolins are poached: they're the tastiest animal aroundResearch Highlight: A long-predicted cosmic collision might not happen after all12:37 How humans expanded their habitats before migrating out of AfricaNew research suggests that shortly before modern humans successfully migrated out of Africa, they massively expanded the range of ecosystems they lived in. By combining climate modelling with data from archaeological sites across the African continent, researchers put forward evidence that 70,000 years ago, humans expanded the ecosystems they lived in to include diverse habitat types from forests to deserts. The authors suggest this ability to live in different places may have helped the later humans that migrated out of the continent around 50,000 years ago.Research article: Hallet et al.21:59 Briefing ChatBlowing bubble-rings could be humpback whales' way of trying to communicate with humans, and the research suggesting that everyone's breathing pattern is unique.Science Alert: Humpback Whale Bubble Rings May Be an Attempt to Communicate With UsNature: How you breathe is like a fingerprint that can identify youSubscribe to Nature Briefing, an unmissable daily round-up of science news, opinion and analysis free in your inbox every weekday. Episode Notes We're finishing our exploration of the book UFO Contact from Andromeda by getting into the nuts and bolts (or not) of Lya's message to the semi-mysterious Professor R.N. Hernandez! As a reminder, this book and its message seems to have had a bit of a confusing journey from experiencer to reader so for a rundown of that, be sure to check out part 1 of the story in the archives. You can find UFO Contact from Andromeda at Amazon as an ebook or you can buy a horrifically expensive used hardcover. Similarly the updated translation—Prophecies of an Extraterrestrial Woman—is on Amazon as an ebook, hardcover, or paperback. Please note that purchases from these links benefit the Saucer Life! The White House pulls Jared Isaacman's nomination, the 2026 NASA budget is released, the Hubble Tension might not be a problem after all, the Milky Way and Andromeda might not merge after all. And on SpaceBites+, which ozone isn't a good biosignature.
Is it wise for us to send signals out to space, with the possibility of an alien civilization deciding to turn our planet into a burned-out cinder? All civilizations would attempt to hide in radio silence if we knew with certainty there were malevolent forces in space. We've been screaming our existence to the cosmos for almost one hundred years. Any extraterrestrials within a one hundred light year radius of us would receive a barrage of radio signals from our direction. How much time do we have left before we are found?
