I'm super excited to have Jeremy Kaplan on Roadcase for this week's episode. Jeremy plays keys in @dogsinapile, one of the most exciting jam bands on the scene today. I love dogs in general, and appropriately, Dogs In A Pile is one of my favorite bands out there today!!I spoke to Jeremy as the Dogs were coming off a four-show run in snowy Steamboat Springs, and we sit down to chat about everything from growing up hyper-focused on music (almost to a fault), to receiving a scholarship from Billy Joel's foundation to attend Long Island School for the Arts, and eventually ending up at Berklee School of Music. I talk to Jeremy about all things Dogs, about his (secret) superpower, and how everything he knows about life, he attributes to his love of music. Jeremy and I go deep down all the roads in this fun conversation!! Jeremy is a super-generous spirit — an open book — he's super thoughtful, and possesses an infectious love of what he does. This is truly a great one!!============================Show Notes:More info on Dogs In A Pile, and their current Spring Tour, here Here are links to a few things we talked about during the show:Jeremy's Rig Run Down, click hereMichael McDonald's memoir, What A Fool Believes, co-written with actor/author Paul Reiser, hereThe Real Frank Zappa Book, hereThanks for listening!!  Don't forget to leave a review describing what you enjoyed most about this episode!!=============================For more information on Roadcase:https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email:  info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

I've got Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff of Lettuce on the show this week, and he's bringing the heavy funk vibes to Roadcase!!  Constantly evolving and exploring new boundaries, Lettuce has been at the forefront of funk both in the jam world and in more traditional lanes. Their newly released latest album, Lettuce with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, is a stunning representation of the melding of classical instrumentation with the funky grooves that Lettuce inhabits, and it's a potent mixture. Shmeeans is a chill dude with a vibe that is one of a super cool funk player, but is just as down-to-earth as it gets. He talks to me about coming up at Berklee School of Music where he met his future bandmates, and we talk about the atypical path of ascendance that Lettuce took to get to where he is today. This is a great conversation and I'm thrilled to have Shmeeans on the Pod!! For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email:  info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Jeanne Simpson moved to New York after graduating. She started doing day jobs in New York City to make ends meet while attending free dance classes, which allowed her to continue her training without having to pay for grad school. She eventually joined the American Isadora Dance Company, a modern company. Beginning a Career in the Performing Arts Jeanne began her acting career at HB Studios, where she was given a scholarship and studied under Austin Pendleton, a talented teacher who taught the advanced Acting Program at HB. This was her first professional choreography job which led to several others on films. Her experiences in the performing arts have had a profound impact on her life and she continues to inspire others to pursue their passions in the performing arts. Working in Television and Film She worked on a show called Wishbone, which was shooting in Texas. Choreography is also fun because it allows her to share her vision with others, and learn from others, creating a collaborative experience. A Choreographer's Process As a choreographer, Jeanne starts with the story, which is essential for their dances to convey something and then, of course, the music. She also considers the style of dance, the capabilities of her dancers, and their potential. She then develops steps that grow out of this story, making it easier to remember. Jeanne shares the example of her Saturday morning class routine. Jeanne also discusses her process and how choreographers keep their thoughts straight in their heads. Welcome, to Podcast Episode 184 featuring John Walker and Putnam Murdock. They are friends and a singer-songwriter team who also work together as playwrights. John has, as he describes, "some experience writing screenplays" and Putnam is a seasoned singer-songwriter and teacher. Putnam Grafton Murdock has performed throughout the US and is a middle school music and theatre teacher at  Friends Academy in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. They have completed one stage play “A Friend's One Man Show” and are working on another play incorporating Putnam's music background. The play, however, is not a traditional musical. As of this podcast episode recording, “A Friend's One Man Show” has been through one table reading at Friends Academy in 2021 and a staged reading at Moses Brown High School in Providence, Rhode Island in 2023. Their creative process has evolved since they began writing together in the fall of 2019 before the pandemic. When the pandemic started, they discovered they could meet more often online. John Daniel Walker is a California State University, Northridge graduate and a transplanted Fairhavenite from San Diego, California. According to John, "While the platform was a bit impersonal at first, we took the opportunity to dedicate ourselves to the creative process which, supplemented our therapy sessions that were no longer taking place." The process has allowed them to take time, revise, and edit often. it also allowed the duo to include their most honest selves in the characters. According to the friends and playwrights, while publication is a dream for the play, their goal has been to create and steep themselves in the process of writing. As a touring artist, Putnam started as a professional musician with the Colorado rock and roll band Chief Broom. He was the frontman. The group achieved a slot on the 1997 H.O.R.D.E tour, appeared in festivals at Red Rocks Amphitheater and sold out venues throughout the western United States. After graduating with a songwriting degree from Berklee School in Music in 2002, Murdock launched a solo career and has since traveled across the country performing with artists such as Martin Sexton, Taj Mahal, Ben Taylor, Gregory Alan Isakov, and Kaki King. Putnam Murdock describes his music as being steeped in old-time folk, country, and blues.his songwriting presents an honest voice of Americana music. As a one-man band or a full ensemble, the intimacy remains obvious in his contemporary sonic collages or classic ballads. His fourth studio release, "Long Time To Make Old Friends, was recorded at Bunker Studios in 2022. Hello everyone, Billy Amendola here.   My guest today Fred Coury is mostly known as the drummer from the eighties MTV-multi-platinum-band Cinderella.    Coury and Cinderella parted ways in 1991 and Fred joined Stephen Pearcy of Ratt to form the band Arcade and record two albums.    Fred also briefly substituted for GnR's drummer Steven Adler in 1987 when health issues forced Adler off the road.   At age five, Coury started taking violin lessons and by age six, studied at the Beirut Conservatory of Music in Beirut, Lebanon. At age ten, he added the trumpet to his repertoire, and at age twelve he started playing the drums. Shortly after, as a teen, Coury was accepted to Berklee School of Music in Boston, for violin. These days Coury spends most of his time in his Los Angeles recording studio, Double Forte Music, composing as an Emmy multi-award-winning composer for top television shows and sports teams.  In 2021, Coury also co-produced pop sensation and singer/songwriter Debbie Gibson's “The Body Remembers”  An avid hockey fan, Coury combined his love of the sport with his musical skills to create the “Goal Song” theme for the LA Kings hockey team.  Let's welcome Fred. Currently, he is the lead guitarist and musical director of TSO West and the co-musical director for studio recordings. Long before he entered the TSO realm, Al set the stage for his work in the band thanks to an impressive musical pedigree. After leaving Berklee School of Music in Boston in the early 80s, Al's versatility led to recording and touring work with musicians and groups such as Alice Cooper (where he served as the band's musical director), Asia, Megadeth, and numerous others. In the mid-'90s, he joined the progressive rock group Savatage where he began working with producer Paul O'Neill. Paul's vision of creating a new type of band that would do anything to allow their music to have the maximum impact on the listener led to the eventual formation of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Al's edgy guitar playing and vast musical lexicon merge perfectly with TSO's passion and intensity.“I really didn't want to do anything else, no side projects,” declares Al. “I could care less, and he kept me working literally around the clock, like 10 or 11 months a year. It was Paul's world. And it is. I'm just happy to be part of it. I loved working for the man. I love working for his family. I loved to help him bring some of his ideas to life. I loved him guiding me, I loved throwing ideas at him. It was just the greatest quarter century in my life, musically.”Al is very aware of the musical legacy he is upholding in TSO and how Paul wanted the music to live on.“For those of us doing it now,” declares Al, “I'm going to make sure to the best of my ability that continues to a younger generation of people who are getting involved. It's like any other art form or anything else that you want replicated for decades and centuries – we're going to do our best. I owe everything to O'Neill and the O'Neill family.”Website: https://www.trans-siberian.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/alpitrelli/www.GaryScottThomas.com

Gail Taylor is extraordinary! She found her purpose in midlife and found a way to build her finance career around that purpose. She then pivoted full time into a career helping others full time, using her passion for music and "superpower" of songwriting to help others meet life's challenges with grace and intention. In this episode, Gail shares the story of her midlife reinvention, in which she traded a successful finance career to help others become their best selves. Her unique public speaking approach harnesses her songwriting talent to motivate and inspire. She became a songwriter at age 62, as well as a keynoter speaker, entrepreneur and passionate advocate for the power of music to inspire change. Her catalog of 13 published songs (produced and recorded in Nashville) draws from her life experiences and imparts invaluable messages, taking center stage in her speaking engagements. She considers songs to be stories, and she uses her powerful songs drawn from her personal experiences to help others re-write their own stories. For the past 35 years, Gail has stood on stages and spoken about finance and socially responsible investing. Her journey began in the business world, where she honed her skills and expertise. She attained her Certified Investment Manager Analyst (CIMA) designation from Wharton University, acquired her MBA at Queens University, and underwent executive training at Harvard Business School, all while building a successful Investment Advisory practice.  In the late 1970s, she embarked on a parallel journey, one dedicated to personal betterment and the art of setting and achieving goals. Then she started learning and playing the piano at age 58! Music flooded into her life, and she retired at 61 to begin studying music in earnest (including at Berklee School of Music--my son's alma mater). She reinvented herself as a musician. She is currently penning her second book, Curve Balls, which contains personal stories and tools to inspire folks to take action in designing their own lives. She started a kickstarting campaign (see below) to help her continue to get her messages out and be on stage in the empowerment world. She observes that the Covid pandemic and opioid crisis presented both challenges and opportunities for people to consider reinventing their lives. Her primary speaking topics are mental health and addiction; empowering women, having worked in a male-dominated industry for most of her career; and tools for leveling up one's life. Her mission is to help as many people as she can to deal with life's curveballs. You can learn more about Gail, support her and follow her work at the links below. Her current Kickstarter campaign (ending 12/22/23) will help her help others and includes clever rewards, like digital access to her upcoming book and the music that accompanies the book, an autographed copy of her book, having your name in her book, an inspirational pendant necklace (which include messages like "Be Your Own Wings"), public speaking discounts and private mentoring sessions with tools to uplevel your life. Gail will even write an acoustic custom song and create a photo video (at $1,000 off her customary price) for someone a donor loves, interviewing the donor and using personal stories to write the lyrics. Those who donate to the campaign can keep the rewards or gift them to others. Listen to this episode and be inspired! The Other Side Of The Bell - A Trumpet Podcast

Mike Price is a professional trumpet player, formerly living in Tokyo, Japan. He composes and performs with the Mike Price Jazz Quintet or Orchestra. Originally from Chicago Illinois, he was a student of Vincent Cichowicz (Chicago Symphony Orchestra) while getting a degree from Northwestern University. Following 3 more years studying jazz composition at Berklee School of Music , he toured with the Stan Kenton Orchestra followed by touring with Buddy Rich. Mike played 1st trumpet for both bands. (1967- 1970) Back in Los Angeles in 1972 Mike was an original member of the Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band, touring Japan many times before moving to Tokyo in 1989 for an NEA/U.S.- Japan Friendship Commission Artist exchange program grant. After conclusion of the grant period, he joined the Sharps & Flats Orchestra led by Nobuo Hara, staying with this band until the leader's retirement. During this time, Mike formed a jazz quintet in 1993 and a big band in 1999, both becoming active participants in the Tokyo jazz scene. The big band had its first concert to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Duke Ellington's birth with a rare performance of the “Such Sweet Thunder Suite,” alternatively known as the “Shakespearian Suite.” The orchestra's activities continued with new projects such as the Miles Davis/Gil Evans “Miles Ahead,” “Porgy & Bess Suite,” “Tribute to Frank Sinatra,” “Tribute to Buddy Rich,” Ellington's “Far East Suite,” “ A Tribute to Gerald Wilson,” with whom Mike worked in Los Angeles before going to Japan. During the early 2000's, Mike was introduced to Detroit jazz singer, Harvey Thompson, with whom a collaboration began. Many performances followed with Harvey being featured with both Mike's quintet and big band. In 2011 Mike recorded a CD with his Tokyo Quintet with all original compositions. “Presenting the Mike Price Jazz Quintet In Tokyo.” Twenty five years after arriving in Japan, after Hara san's retirement, Mike has returned to home ground in Los Angeles forming the American version of his quintet and orchestra with some of LA's top jazz musicians. Throughout his performing career, Mike has a parallel commitment to teaching. Before going to Japan, he graduated with a Master's Degree from University of Southern California with the help of a teaching assistantship in Jazz Studies. Shortly afterwards he received a California Community College Instructor Credential. There have been many private students in addition to band clinics and performances for high schools, universities, and community bands oth before and while living in Japan. Notable in this was an 18 year contract with Hamamatsu Public Schools to teach elementary, middle school, and high school students brass instrument instruction and fundamentals of jazz ensemble performance. Also, there was a 9 year contract to teach beginning trumpet classes at the elementary level and private lessons through high school to students at St. Maur International School in Yokohama, Japan.   Links:   Sign Up for a Valve Alignment or Mouthpiece Consultation with John in Boston at Virtuosity Musical Instruments New Gard Bags in stock at trumpetmouthpiece.com

Terri Lyne Carrington is one of the most respected jazz musicians in the world. Her drumming career started at the age of 10, which is when she officially got her musicians' union card, and in the decades since, she's earned countless accolades, including four Grammys, a Doris Duke Artist Award and an NEW Jazz Masters Fellowship. She has performed on over 100 recordings and has toured and recorded with jazz legends, including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz and Esperanza Spalding. In recent years she has turned her attention to correcting gender inequities in her field. In 2018 she founded the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice at her alma mater, Berklee School of Music in Boston. She remains the Institute's artistic director, ensuring that new generations of female, trans and non-binary musicians are welcomed to contribute their talents to the genre. She's also passionate about recognizing the contributions women have already made to jazz. To wit, she edited a recently published collection of music titled “New Standards: 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers.” Alongside that project, she recorded an album titled “New Standards, Vol. 1” that features several compositions in the book. “New Standards” won Terri Lyne her most recent Grammy, and not surprisingly she plans eventually to record all 101 compositions. Terri Lyne also recently curated a multi-artist multimedia installation titled “New Standards” that initially opened at the Carr Center in Detroit, where she is artistic director. This interview took place the morning after the closing party celebrating the exhibition of “New Standards” at Emerson Gallery of Contemporary Arts in Boston.https://www.terrilynecarrington.com/

Britt Lightning, the lead guitarist for the all-female, Platinum-selling, 80's rock band Vixen, is our guest this week on the Hoffman Podcast. Listen in as Britt regales us with stories of how the guitar and playing music came to be her life's work. Her journey to playing guitar was supported by many, including her parents, and spotlights many synchronistic moments. In wonderfully uplifting ways, her story highlights how when we follow our inner calling, we find that the Universe is indeed conspiring on our behalf. Britt came to the Hoffman Process because she was feeling creatively stifled and felt a sense of stuckness in her life. She heard herself thinking, "This can't be it" about her life.  And even though she'd been on stage for years, Britt still wasn't comfortable expressing herself with her voice. As she tells Liz, expressing herself through music has always been easier than through words. At the end of her Process after doing all of the cathartic expressive work, Britt shares how her voice finally broke through in a wholly authentic way. This capped off her Process journey and carried her forward into her life post-Process. A few days later, directly following the Process, Britt and her band played on stage. She shares how she stood on stage with complete self-confidence and ease. A few days later, Britt found her creativity renewed and flowing in powerful ways. Finding her Spiritual Self in the Process is something that now guides Britt in her life. Her image of her Spiritual Self is a beautiful being, goddess-like, dressed all in white. Now when Britt is faced with life choices, she thinks of her Spiritual Self's goodness and makes her choices accordingly. She chooses not to do things that she cannot envision her Spiritual Self doing. We hope you enjoy this wonderful conversation with Britt and Liz. Our creativity is a vital aspect of living joyful lives. And as Britt shares, it's all within you. More about Britt Lightning: Britt Lightning is the lead guitarist for the all-female Platinum-selling 80's rock band Vixen. She is also the Musical Director at Rock ‘N' Roll Fantasy Camp. From 2015 to 2016, Britt played guitar for Rachel Platten, performing live at festivals and on national TV shows promoting the single "Fight Song", which charted at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Britt performed live on Good Morning America, the Today Show, Live with Kelly and Michael, VH1, the Teen Choice Awards, and Nickelodeon. She also performed on the 2016 finale of America's Got Talent, which took place at NYC's Radio City Music Hall. Britt also performed on Live with Kelly and Michael with Jason Derulo to promote his new album “Tattoos”. From 2012-2015 Britt performed for 22-time Grammy Award-winning artist Alejandro Sanz in his stadium-level world tour. She is featured in Sanz's "La Musica No Se Toca – En Vivo" CD/DVD. Britt joined Sanz at the 2013 Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas performing the single “No Me Compares”, and performed with the band at prestigious festivals, venues, and international TV specials. Britt recorded “Live At The Roxy”, a live CD/DVD with Alejandra Guzman, an iconic Latin artist who has sold over 30 million records. Labeled the “Closer” by Lady Gaga, Britt has followed her dreams by striving to grow and evolve as a musician while simultaneously earning a degree in Music Business from Northeastern University. This week we are wrapping up season 5 with two amazing guests! I'm talking with Eric Knight & Ritch Esra of MUBUTV (Music Business Television) in Los Angeles, CA. These guys have a combined goldmine of knowledge and advice that covers the whole gambit of the music industry. Ritch worked at two record labels; A&M in radio promotion and Arista in A&R where he had the privilege of working with the legendary Clive Davis who has signed some of the biggest artists in the world including Whitney Houston and Kelly Clarkson. Eric has opened for such acts as KISS, Dave Matthews Band, Aerosmith and Kid Rock. He started his own artist management company Persistent Management™ not only for his own career as an artist but also to create a vehicle for other artists to achieve their artistic vision and integrity. Their MUBUTV Insider Series and Insider podcast is similar to my YOU CAN Make A Living In The Music Industry podcast as they have guests from all over the industry sharing knowledge that will help you make a living in music no matter what area you are pursuing. We are a companion series to each other and I can't recommend them enough to check out (after you listen to this episode of course!) We are discussing the importance of being educated about your chosen career path. Why you no longer need a record deal to be successful. Why you have to be a jack of all trades AND a master of all. Plus, learning who your audience is, finding where they are, then going after them. And we discuss how MUBUTV's goal is to educate, empower and engage your music career. Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com.  In this episode we discuss: *The importance of internships. *The Music Business Registry. *Become educated about your chosen career path. *MUBUTV (Music Business Television) is a companion type podcast to YOU CAN Make A Living In The Music Industry. *How to listen to songs for A&R. *The criteria of the kind of artists today has changed because of a copy model (CDs, tapes, etc.) to an access model (streaming for free). *Artists signings today are not just about who is successful or about their music. Today its about who they are, where are they from, what do they represent? What are their values?  *You no longer need a record deal to be successful. *The real challenge today is the ability to get someone's attention. *You must find an audience for your music before A&R or labels will put time, energy and effort   into you. *We are no longer just artists. We are business leaders. *A&R was a faith based business. That model changed with technology. *Today technology allows us to ask if there is a market for my music without A&R. *Who is my audience? *If you don't know who your audience is at the beginning of your career, start making a serious commitment to learning who they are. *Being an artist who has been signed to a label and also an indie. *Find where your niche is, that narrow world where you can build your career. *Major labels are amplifiers to a career. *Adapting is the key. *A booking agent won't sign you as an indie unless you can sell at least 300-500 seats on your own. *You have to be a jack of all trades and a master of all. *Learning who your audience is, finding where they are and going after them. *The more you know, the more valuable you become to companies. *MUBUTV's goal is to educate, empower and engage your music career. *Study the lives of other successful people in the industry. *www.mubutv.com *www.youtube.com/mubutv   BIO: Ritch Esra | Co-Founder I started my career in 1978 at Record World, a leading trade magazine and have spent my entire career in this industry.  From 1980 - 1987 I worked at two record labels; A&M in radio promotion and Arista in A&R where I had the privilege of working with the legendary Clive Davis. In 1986, I began teaching several music business courses at various schools including Trebas Institute of Recording Arts, UCLA Extension, SAE (School for Audio Engineering) and Musicians Institute where I continue to teach today. In 1992 I formed the Music Business Registry with my business partner Stephen Trumbull. For the last twenty years, we have published the music industries leading contact directories for personnel in A&R, Music Publishing, Film/Television Music, Music Law and Artist Management. MUBUTV™is a blend of my passion for music as well as educating artists and others who have a strong curiosity about music, technology and the new emerging models within the business. Eric Knight | Co-Founder As an independent recording artist, I have taken the contemporarily appropriate “do-it-yourself” attitude to a whole new level; Having opened for such acts as KISS, Dave Matthews Band, Aerosmith and Kid Rock, I have worked tirelessly to introduce my original music to the masses. Throughout my career, I have worked on both the performing and business sides of the music industry. Besides being an accomplished musician with a strong D.I.Y. work ethic, I started my own artist management company Persistent Management™ not only for my own career as an artist but also to create a vehicle for other artists to achieve their artistic vision and integrity. My band Rock act Disciples of Babylon has put everything I've learned throughout my career to the test in order to build a self sustaining career that is totally autonomous and completely independent.   My current and most ambitious project, Symbiotic Nation™ is a new entertainment company startup with a mission to reinvent the entertainment industry completely. “Think Google of the new entertainment industry.” I am a voting member to the National Academy of Recording Arts & Science [NARAS] and The Latin Recording Academy [LARAS] Grammy Awards. I've always had a strong passion for teaching and sharing my experience with other aspiring artists, musicians and industry professionals. As a result, I have lectured and conducted several workshops over the years with students at the Berklee School of Music in Boston as well as my alma mater Musicians Institute [MI] in Los Angeles. MUBUTV™ is the ultimate vehicle where I feel there is a genuine opportunity for artists and musicians like myself to empower themselves in order to survive as well as thrive in this new era.
