A short, simple piece for a solo instrument -- only 35 seconds long. Yet it has captured the imaginations of so many people: musicians, philosophers, artists, mathematicians, and more. It's all because of the unique cleverness of Bach -- showing us here that he can construct a piece that can be played forwards OR backwards... OR both at the same time! Yes, this piece is actually for two instruments -- one playing it normally and the other playing it backwards in time. Alex recounts the story of Bach composing this piece (and the rest of The Musical Offering), and our discussion turns to the monumental book Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid by Douglas Hofstadter (1979) as well as the recent Christopher Nolan film Tenet (2020). All these works are the result of authors striving to understand profound mysteries of the universe -- all by asking one simple question: what would happen if you turned time backwards? Director Christopher Nolan's long relationship with Warner Bros. ended when the studio released his last movie “Tenet” on the streamer HBO Max the same day it opened in theaters. For his next film, Nolan had several demands for potential studios, including a 110-day exclusive theatrical window. Nolan ended up picking Universal for his next project, a World War II drama about the creation of the atom bomb.

Christopher Nolan's last full-length feature film was about soldiers traveling backwards and forwards in time to engage in battle. It was one of the most cinematically engaging films and mind-bending portrayals of "temporal war" ever depicted on screen. In this special episode, "Back" (Read: ALIAS) shares his story of how he accidentally slipped forward into the future and didn't realize he was signing up to become a lifelong soldier in the temporal battle that's been going on for centuries. The difference between Back's story versus Christopher Nolan's "Tenet"? Back's is real. If you enjoy this podcast, please leave rate this show and leave a review! Even a few words will help. For this episode, I got Marco Miranda as a guest. Given that he has a YouTube channel called OddMarc TV, where he talks about video games, it would only make perfect sense to have him on for a video game movie episode. But instead, we reminisced about Reminiscence, Lisa Joy's sci-fi thriller starring Hugh Jackman. What are our thoughts on the concept of the film? How well does it handle the mystery aspect? And what about the music and cinematography? Listen and find out! Also, you may hear "Editor Steven" chiming in every now and then.
